Y&R episode discussion

Thanks, aMLCproduction... I know I forgot completely that it was monday. And BOY do I agree.... today was totally bad. And I tell you why.... Heinle, Morrow, Kahlil, and Erin killed the entire episode. Today they didn't focus as much on Maitland... HUGE mistake, considering she's been literally carrying this show BY HERSELF for the last week. It's amazing how bad it really was without Beth having a large amount of scenes... it's quite sobering. Only a few good things today.. the few scenes Beth had were great, as ussual.. when the doctor walks in and she says through tears.. "I'm not ready yet!" Wonderful. Rikaart did fine in his little time with Colleen.... and Melody did well in teh chapel scene with Morrow, but DAMN, could he have been more poker-faced in that scene? I think if I were in that scene, I'd have grabbed his balls just to see if he was awake. (What am I saying, I'd have just grabbed his balls for the hell of it! LOL)And you know, Lily's DIALOGUE was touching and lovely if you'd read it on PAPER, but Kahlil acting it out? Flatter than a crepe. And in that scene with Goddard on the couch... wiping away tears that AREN'T THERE?? who is this bitch trying to fool? Can't she have a small bottle of saline solution and dribble a bit of FAKE tears before the cameras roll? SH!T. And seeing tomtorrow's previews, I've think I've determined what bothers me about Muhney... I think it's his MANNERISMS, the looking down and squinting crap, it's always the same. I have to say it, he looks bad next to John Rubenstein, who is seasoned and accomplished.

Agreed 100%.

Something about this entire show is off and poorly planned and executed. I can only blame the writers and producers for this mess.

I'm going to point out, though, that the last two episodes that really disappointed me did so because of the ACTORS.

Y&R has somehow collected a real collection of horrendous duds. And it is really starting to drag the show down. Erin, Sursock, Heinle...these folks are bad. But even people I REALLY liked at one point (Luckinbill, Khalil, Miller, Morrow) are really sucking. And that's not me just being negative.

When once-decent actors can't do it for me (and it's about the performance, not the words), that tells me there is a major problem with direction/production. I'm starting to think that Josh Griffith might not have been so bad on the performance side. (Acting never bothered me during LML). And Ed Scott was the "actor's producer". But, it seems to me that Rauch--for all his reputation as "disciplinarian" seems to be sh!tty and p!ss poor in nurturing any kind of decent performance. For strong actors, like Maitland or Cast, it doesn't matter. But for a weak link, like Luckinbill, this is the kiss of death.

They shouldn't be writing scenes for actors that they know can't deliver them, unless they don't actually watch the show they write, which I'm starting to believe. If Maria thinks her show is without problems, then she definitely isn't watching her own show.

Maybe the fumes from the icy hot, ben gay and vicks vapor rub is altering Pual Rauch's thought process. Maybe this is the reasoning behind the destruction of our favorite show

Couldn't have put it better MYSELF. I think you hit this nail right on the head. It's also possible that budget constraints are taking a toll on the performances, making everyone rush through too much. I agree wiht Carl, that we had some REAL dud lines today... but Lily's dialogue at Colleen's bedside was for the most part, quite lovely... except it was delivered by someone who was trying to ACT like she was crying, but WASN'T. It reminds me of a teenage girl pretending to cry without shedding a tear to get her boyfriend to buy her something. If any blame goes to the writers, it would be the breakdown writer for only giving Beth one really "meat and potatoes" scene today.

- The dialogue stunk. My personal lowlights (paraphrasing):

Nikki: "I will go all the way to Oz so the Wizard can give you a heart."

-

Cane: "We will put your memories in a book and call it the Adventures of Colleen and Lily." (Is that like the Adventures of Pete and Pete? Did they wear a lot of flannel shirts as a child?)

-

Lily: "Did you forget what the last F in BFF stands for? Best Friends FOREVER!" (I've got an F for you, Lily)

Who writes this sh!t?

God, that was all horrible. I know the storylines from the Head Writers suck, but the staff writers haven't even been trying, IMO, to make this crap work.

Paula Cwikly and Eric Freiwald & Linda Schreiber should be ashamed of themselves for that crap.

Nikki's line about the wizard was particularly gag-worthy.

LOL! Tell me about it...

I honestly see nothing salvageable about Y&R at this point, and as long as this writing and producing regime that can't acknowledge any mistakes is in charge, this show won't be getting any better. It's amazing how blind the writers and producers of this show are, they think this is a the best Y&R can be, sadly.

THe show has to experience a huge loss in ratings before any thing will change. Let's stop watching. They'll listen then. If the ratings stay the same or rise,(which they have been) this will do nothing but letting the destruction last even longer.

SO let's do it, if we want change TUNE OUT!!!!!

Honey, don't knock it till you try it!

There are some things that you need to keep to yourself.

THAT was one of them.

Y&R is already down in season to season ratings, which shows this writing regime hasn't been successful overall in rebuilding the show ratings-wise.

Really, just keep the faith that better people will come in and rescue the show...

I know eventually the regime will change, but what is it going to take, or how long will it take? Y&R may be down in season to season but a bigger drop of 3 to 4 points in a 1 to 3 month period will speak volumes to CBS/Sony/Bell

Mark summed up the ratings data Sara Bible posted in her recent article nicely, and I wouldn't say this bodes that well ratings-wise for this writing/producing regime overall.

Reversing ratings momentum as fast as this writing regime did isn't very good...

I plan to analyze that. I'm actually saying the decline that Sara reports is an UNDERESTIMATE, because they reversed their gain momentum.

If we started looking in early 2009, we'd see decline in the last 6-8 months was even GREATER than what Sara is summarizing.

As you can imagine, one of my "damn charts" will surely follow, LOL. Maybe more than one.

Ratings drops never speak to TPTB, except in the words "time to cancel".

Better to work with what they have, which produced some good stuff earlier in the year.

I really think Ed Scott should replace Anthony Morina and work on the performances.

I also think it may be time to replace Sheffer with someone who knows the style and plots of the past...maybe even Sally Sussman Morina (so that that family still has a paycheck).

Mark that would be great. Can u also compare Mab's numbers to LML's, high's and lows, and percentage of losses? Hell can u do this for all the writers post Bell. I know soaps ratings have been eroding but what was Bell's percentage of erosion compared to the other regimes of Y&R.
