Y&R: Week of June 15-19, 2009

I think the problem is that it's too difficult for MAB, Sheffer, Hamner, and co. to carefully plot out 5 hours a week. They should quit their jobs, hang their heads in shame, and/or kill themselves for their incompetence.

Hmmm. I'd rather they didn't.

And the production values are still just spectacular. In fact, they've gotten even better since PR got there. Seeing new spots of sets we've seen for years is always cool. New lighting - and updating the old music scores. And to echo your point about characters, they are the indentity of the show to me - not the stories. That's another big difference between my POV and others I think. The characters are all acting like they have for years - save a few. And they're all played by the same people too. So it's easy for me to accept different types of stories.

Yup.

And let us not forget, Adam and Mary Jane and Nina/Cane are FUN!

This is a heightened summer. It too shall pass.

Guys, how do we ignore that many of the problems plaguing this writing regime have been there since the beginning of this regime and they're only getting worse now?

This show needs a new writing team, ASAP!

I do have some sympathy for MAB actually. She wants to honor Bill Bell's vision and yet still be contemporary. Is that even possible? Audiences are different today and we have so many options. I am unhappy with a lot of the writers' choices but I can see the challenge inherent in putting out a quality product.

Tricia Cast, in a weird way, fills the Victoria Rowell void for me. TC isn't glam like VR but she has the same fierceness and centered quality. You could feel the tension among the three of them -- TC brings out the best in her scene partners. If Tyra's going to hook up with her ex-nephew Devon, I would love to at least see a test-run of Neil/Nina. I think they could surprise.

I completely agree with this. You nailed it with the "centered" quality. Dru and Nina are both likable heroines who don't take no mess. You would think every soap would have one of them.

ABC tries to do it with the Kendalls, the Blairs, and the Carlys, but none of them are likable. And certainly not "centered" by any means.

Dearest Alvie - I SO wish I could tell you knew what's going on backstage so you could understand that MAB is a freaking miracle worker and is basically plugging up holes that she has NOT made.

On a side note - I never thought I'd be defending such a proud, card-carrying Republican. Ever!

We're all Golden Girls fans right? I've seen plenty of GG avatars here. Every show needs a Dorothy Zbornak. Smart, sassy, calls people out on their bullshit. Your Dorothy can be plain or pretty, but she has to be tougher than any man. Dru and Nina are like that.

I see almost everything you point about whats wrong wigth it, but it really doesnt bother me. for the most part. The only thing i really hate that Y&R does is ignore half the cast.

But i watch soaps for entertainment. And im simple, lol. As long as the show entertains me for the hour, i like it. I dont need greatness, i dont expect perfection. Nothing wrong with that tho, im just a saved by the bell, 90210, days of our lives kind of guy i guess. LOL.

I wish they would drop Hamner and promote someone with in as a Co-Head Writer that has history with the show and can provide better direction ideas for stories.

I dont get this.

I dont think she or the bells as hardcore as people make them out to be.

Dearest Alvie - I SO wish I could tell you knew what's going on backstage so you could understand that MAB is a freaking miracle worker and is basically plugging up holes that she has NOT made.

-She has the ability to write for half of the cast that she isn't writing for.

-She has the ability to diversify the tone of this show so it isn't one-sided.

-She has the ability to fix this horrible Winters family story.

-She has the ability to fix LML's messes over time rather than do it all at one.

-She has the ability to pace better storylines.

-She has the ability to hire a more competent Co-HW.

-She had the ability to get rid of characters that no longer serve any purpose and contribute nothing to that show, especially in these economic times.

And there's more, but the fact remains, she's not doing it and hasn't been doing most of this since the start of her regime.

Anything can be a step up from LML, but MAB is no genius or even a consistent writer either.

I don't think the klepto is over. It was stated that she does this in spells. And the spells spontaneously recover. But the girl walked out of therapy.

She'll be stealing big-time again some day in the future.

The problem for me is we never saw her stealing until this story. Then suddenly she's stealing all over the place. Then suddenly she's done. So the show saying she only does this sporadically seemed like CYA.

If they were going to do it this way then I think they should have had her stealing stuff a year ago, then she stopped, then a few more things, at random intervals. They also could have shown flashbacks of her stealing as a teenager, or a young woman.

Going on to the music, just for a minute, it's strange how they can get some cues so right (like the music during the great scene where MJ imagined seeing Paul again), and some others are so jarring (like the comic relief music when Jill started working as a manicurist -- I don't feel like laughing at her pain).

In Re. to Y&R Weekly threads

Same sh-t different week.

Hating on the show can be fun, but this thread makes it so damn depressing. Where's the funny snark?
