Exactly! They gave TS plenty material and she never delivered, IMO. They never tried to give this to VB. Instead they chose to put her into a position that nobody can see her in and have her sue all of their favorite characters.

Yeah!

While you are right, I confess in my head I have chosen to make it a positive (Engen quits a job that was making him crazy; the show and the fans get a new take on Adam with an actor who is thrilled to be there). And, a lot of discussion was had (not all constructive, but still) about attitudes to GLBT in America and entertainment.

Plus, isn't the old saw "there is no such thing as bad publicity"?

Well, all the examples you cite are of "sweet princesses". But I see Vail more as Sharon Case/Katherine Kelly Lang. By which I mean...there is a sweetness and an intention to do good...but also a single-minded obsessiveness about the "soul mate"...and a very sexual nature. It is this package that I feel Vail could rock.

You know, I have regular debates with someone on usenet about Kevin "coming out of the closet" (especially because the closet has been so explicit in his life). The problem I have is that he has been written as resolutely straight...I never even felt subtext going the other way. I know the rumors about Rikaart, but it doesn't feel to me true to the writing to make Kevin anything but straight at this point.

But I'm afraid to even post the last paragraph because I don't want to get into any more "gay agenda" wars... :)

Amen. Another reason to make the character a model.

DA on Y&R is a THANKLESS role. Give it back to Glenn Richards. Always sanctimonious, going after the wrong people.

Wow. I'm surprised you're on board with this. We fight so hard about this issue over at Usenet. Yes, AL's Colleen just smouldered, didn't she?

I don't know what to say. For someone to post such unbelievable lies and for you to jump on the train right in a nanosecond is just... Wow.

But nevermind. This is a thread about Y&R. People don't want to read this.

Well, people can deal with it. I'm pretty sure I don't have a gay agenda. My agenda is drama and mixing things up brings the drama. If they are going to keep Kevin straight, then I want him to do more love scenes. He really sold that elevator scene to me, he looked like he was having fun. I need more of that.

I always liked Adrianne Leon in the role. I was upset when she was fired. She and Kevin had great chemistry. Such a wasted opportunity only to have him paired with awful Jana.

    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
    • So true...Hackney might have had a story on FC with Richard being an old lover of his, but reveals herself to be a Cartel member and blackmails Richard with something into doing her dirty work  LOL. But of course Richard had his hands full with the double trouble sisters Ms. Jones and Ms. Braxton that season.

    • Cat herself will be a stumbling block all her own as she vowed to Chad to stay away from him, thus redeeming her of her crime morally. Classic DAYS would have them gazing longingly at each other at Doug's Place or Blondie's, while Liz is serenading the room with a song aptly chosen to represent their feelings of emotional turmoil.
    • From what I just recently watched, they were setting her up to go into future stories. She was Emmy nomination worthy in the material I saw. If some viewers did not like her, the character could have been rehabilitated after that sick storyline. It feels like they destroyed a character for fun and then tossed her to the curb. Spencer had chemistry with everyone. I'm just retroactively angry on Spencer's behalf.  You're right about how Cheryl was often forgotten and pushed aside and I would take Cheryl over Josie. I think soaps need characters like Cheryl. Characters like Josie are way too common. Josie always got on my nerves.
    • CBS was back in third place in 1994/95. That was the season CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights which also cost them several established affiliates in major media markets. 1995 CBS was sold to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. 1995/96 CBS was trying to be young and cool to compete with NBC and Fox, but it was an epic failure and CBS was once again in third place.
    • I tend to think that Chad will actually listen to Jen (this time). And that will be the next stumbling block in their relationship, which will open the possibilities for Cat to seek another member of their love triangle... To iterate my earlier thought, I am also not a fan of the person Melissa Reeves, but the character of Jennifer looks so chic this week, especially in comparison to Hope (and Gabi).  That blunt haircut is a winner.
    • I think Cheryl was essentially replaced by Josie, and it seems likely that Lemay wanted to bring the Frames back into the picture and for a variety of reasons that it would be McKinnons who would make way for them. Cheryl didn't really get many layers -- she was pretty and kind and sweet and faded into the background so that Scott could participate in the AIDS storyline with Dawn. Looking at the AWHP, other than (not very) shockingly being in love with her mother's adopted son Scott, Cheryl apparently went out with Sam and flirted with much-too-old-for-her John Hudson and MJ's ex-boyfriend/pimp Chad. I know MJ told Mary that she had been a prostitute, but did she tell Cheryl and did she tell anyone about Chad's pimping?
    • I feel the same way about Melissa Reeves' Jennifer. She just makes the show feel like home by her presence alone. I am perfectly okay with them coming in every once and awhile, which probably fits Reeves' schedule better anyway. Their connections to Salem are still there: JJ, the grandkids, Jack still owning half of The Spectator ... they're perfect recurring characters. All this talk of Jennifer being in the wrong regarding Cat is absurd. Jennifer is not being villainized in any way, shape, or form, she's just being allowed to actually be human, which adds odds to the obstacle of Chad and Cat eventually getting together. All inner conflict. Keep it coming!
    • Hahaha. Jean Hackney, Angelica Nero, and the Falcon Crest henchwomen were all straight out of a James Bond movie.
    • My hunch is what you've described. JFP is likely back working on transitioning the show to a new studio and embracing new technology for its production model.
