I know I am with several others who wish we could have seen more of Audra Lindley's vicious take on Liz. For those of us who only know her sitcom work from the mid '70s until her death in 1999, it would definitely show a different facet to her career.

Although I barely remember Lindley as Liz, I assume she was somewhat similar to Phoebe Tyler on AMC.  Not as wealthy and probably not played with as much humor -- but Phoebe would probably be the best way to describe Liz, especially when Agnes Nixon was writing AW.

This made me reflect that one couldn't create a character like Phoebe or Liz today without including some degree of camp.  I would pin it to Alexis on Dynasty, that ever since that period it is hard to name an older female character who is just mean, without the injection of some camp (e.g. big hats, witty bon mots, boy toys).

This shot from early in Irene's run gives an indication of Liz's character at that time - she looks quite intimidating

I'd say there was a high degree of camp in Phoebe.

I was referring to early Phoebe and early Liz, before they both developed a sense of humor

I see what you mean, but Ruth tried to bring a certain camp to the role from the start, it's just Agnes Nixon intervened for a while.

Yes she was, maybe for close to a year.  Great photo!

Aunt Liz looks so bad ass. Even Rachel looks a bit scared.

I'd love to see that hospital scene when Liz pinned Rachel up against the wall.

That was great.

How did they handle Liz's breakdown? I know it was brief but it was Mac choosing to marry Rachel that brought it on, right?

Mac had been in a serious accident, and a smitten Liz (who wanted him for herself and who was deeply hurt that he was gravitating towards Rachel instead) went berserk when she thought that Mac might die.

I'll never forget how vile Rachel was when she snapped at Liz to get out of her face. "I don't enjoy seeing you any more than Mac does."

What a bitch. UGH..
