Yes, I own a couple of them, tucked away somewhere. I haven't read them in over a decade, but I kind of remember the one that starred Constance Ford and Beverlee McKinsey. Lemay was self-published, the plays are probably still available to order. I got mine through Barnes and Noble where my significant other was working at the time.

So I am chugging away through 1981.  Mac just got custody of Amanda.  (Who is played by the cutest little girl...she is just a sweetheart on the screen).  "Steven Frame" is back in town as David Canary now plays him, but he has yet to reveal his identity.  Mac is planning on marrying Alice (which I am guessing never happens...)  Rachel is packing to move to California (which I am also guessing never happens...) I love the scenes with Ada, although as I had said earlier when I watched in the mid to late 80's as a much younger person I did not appreciate.  Cecile is pregnant (shocker...) we know that one plays out.  It's October 1981 in my world, a simpler time across the board.

Dana Klaboe played Amanda until 1986 before she was aged to blonde Sandra Ferguson. I liked her a lot as Amanda and Mac's daughter. It seems likely that they chose the dark colouring to emphasize that she was Rachel's, especially if Mac was engaged to Alice. The hair colour was one superficial reason why I was disappointed in the first adult Amanda. When they cast Christine Tucci she felt more like the grown up version of the dark-haired little girl.

I recently stumbled across this article.  I had no idea Beverly Penberthy was so vocal when the was written out.  Good for her!  She is completely accurate in everything she says.  Paul Rauch should have done more to keep her in on the show.  Corinne Jacker made many mistakes during her one year as head writer. Writing out Pat Matthews Randolph was her biggest mistake of all.

Here is a link to Pat's final episode.  Coincidentally it is also Kyra Sedgwick's first episode as Juia Shearer.

Wow. This is an amazing article.

Thanks for posting @Efulton

It’s really a shame what happened to AW in the late 70s and early 80s. The show never really recovered after General Hospital got so popular. There’s so much we don’t know about what went on behind the scenes during Corinne Jacker’s tenure and this sheds so much light on it. It sounds like Beverly Penberthy was hinting that the only reason CJ brought in so many new characters was to make money, rather than try to save the show.

While Corinne Jacker was a horrible head writer she did create some good characters - Cass and Stacey Winthrop, Henrietta Morgan, Thomasina Mason and Alma Rudder who was one of my all time favourites.  After rewatching many episodes on YouTube from the eighties i have realized that December 1982 through February 1985 is really a great period for the show. If you have not done so I encourage you to watch.

Ms. Penberthy certainly seemed dissatisfied in 1976 when reading the article in the soap treasures thread from the Daytime TV series interview alongside Michael M. Ryan. I have to wonder what the actors playing the Matthews family in 1975 thought of the storyline change. She never seemed to be the lead actress during her run.

I agree about that 1976 interview.  Considering the wonderful things Harding Lemay said about her in his 1981 book, Penberthy seemed rather unappreciative of his writing five years earlier.  I always got the impression she did not enjoy working with Michael Ryan -- that she perhaps thought he was too old, or that John was too boring, to be Pat's love interest.   But that may just be my impression.

    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
    • I can see Kim being that way. Well, Kyle didn't have to say yes. LOL. The suicide attempt feels plot-driven. I don't know if even Long could've made it work. She'd spent so much time trying to make Reva and Kyle into a couple, it feels odd to just have them give up. Not to mention how odd it is to have Maeve agree to marry him. Re Charita---surely they could've at least tried  finding clips with who was still there. Maybe they wouldn't have been "big" moments, but surely she'd interacted with Ross, Vanessa, and Henry. Vanessa had dated Ed, FCOL. But Mo and Rick were there---surely they could've bothered to find some clips of her with them (and they did interact a fair amount) and used them. And with Ed they could've found some shot of her talking to him and just not cut to whoever was playing Ed in the clip. That to me is what feels lazy---they had more than a year to figure it out, and they went with a bunch of photos. If you were sort of centering it on Rick anyway---then find clips with them and use 'em.
    • I definitely think it's time to write off Nina for good. I think her killing Drew might actually be a good idea. She could completely lose it after losing both Sasha and Willow and she ends up murdering Drew and eventually she gets caught and sent away to prison for a long time.
    • I hope it's okay to post this here(as in from DC)
    • Quick question - did Christie and Leann share any scenes together in the '80s before Leann left the show?
    • This is the perfect way to encapsulate the situation. So many morally-reprehensible stories were foisted on the show and its characters in ATWT's dwindling years. Rape should never be used as a cheap plot device or in a way that degrades the victim. Jack's sexual assault was another heinous example of how nasty the the show's tone had become. The fact that people like Hogan Sheffer, Ron Carlivati, Jean Passanante, Charles Pratt, Dena Higley, etc., somehow end up winning awards for their material, decimates the credibility and integrity of the awards, IMHO. Soaps used to have a solid moral core and did not originally wallow in the gutter, rolling around in filth and depravity just to be cool, hip, campy, or whatever else modern-day PTB aim for. Thank you. Cruelty, degradation and misogyny are not components which lend themselves to successful soaps, which have always been predicated on warmth, family bonds, and providing a comforting haven for their audience. The genre has been crippled because the cynical and ignorant executives in charge understand neither the shows nor what the audience wants to see.
    • Beverlee was on a whole other level from Kim. It's not like they were in competition with each other. I get the feeling that Kim had a slight problem with the super-professional, serious cast members who just wanted everyone to be prepared and do the work, as she seems to like having fun on set. (She's made a few cracks about Chris Bernau being like that). Bev was definitely one of those. But they didn't work together that much. Yeah, they made her manic and also much weaker. She always had a vulnerability, but wanting to kill herself over that guy? No way. Not only that, he didn't leave her! She insisted he marry Maeve. When they did the tribute to Bert/Charita, the compilation of scenes with her showed how much the cast had been almost totally turned over in a relatively short period of time. Nearly every shot was of her by herself because most people she had worked with had been fired, left or been replaced. I assume they couldn't show her with people who hadn't been replaced, like Don Stewart, Elvera Roussel, or Robert Newman because they would have had to pay them for using their clips. It's dreadful to watch. Like she had no connection to the current show.
