I would love to be part of the conversation on MSNBC related to the Kimmel story and it's chilling effects on first amendment, but unfortunately I was terminated by MSNBC for stating that "hateful thoughts lead to hateful words which lead to hateful actions".

— Matthew Dowd (@matthewjdowd.bsky.social) Sep 18, 2025 at 6:58 AM

Matthew Dowd, former Republican who changed to Democrat after disagreeing with George W. Bush, was a commentator on MSNBC.
MSNBC fired him for his Kirk comments.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/sep/11/msnbc-fires-matthew-dowd-charlie-kirk-shooting

On September 10, 2025, Matthew Dowd said on-air on MSNBC,
commenting on the assassination of Charlie Kirk:

"He's been one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. And I think that is the environment we are in. You can't stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place. And that's the unfortunate environment we are in."

Dowd also speculated that the shooter may have been a supporter, stating: "We don't know if this was a supporter shooting their gun off in celebration. So we have no idea about this."

Later that day, MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler denounced Dowd's comments, saying,
"During our breaking news coverage of the shooting of Charlie Kirk, Matthew Dowd made comments that were inappropriate, insensitive, and unacceptable. We apologize for his statements, as has he. There is no place for violence in America, political or otherwise."
That evening, Dowd was fired from MSNBC.

That's just insane.

Charlie Kirk was a right-wing nutcase, and comparing him in any way to Jesus is beyond ridiculous. (And I say that as a completely non-religious person)

Jimmy Kimmel is returning to the air, Disney says

  • Jimmy Kimmel's show is returning after ABC pulled it from the air last week.
  • Kimmel's suspension came following pressure from the FCC and Nexstar.
  • Disney said the show would return on Tuesday.

P.S I guess the backlash truly made them sh-t their pants. ezgif-46b7b83c3c73c2.thumb.gif.f7e96a49a Cheers, y'all. We all did our part!

So i just did this. F Disney/ABC

So Jimmy Kimmel is back. Id like to take credit and think that my cancellation and feedback I left on why was the final straw that got them to reverse their decisions

I was about to tag you today and say a similar thing about your contribution! You did it! And we all just helped along the way. ❤️ 😁

fyi, there's a whole separate thread about the Kimmel suspension in the primetime section.
https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/69392-abc-pulls-“jimmy-kimmel-live”-from-air-indefinitely-following-hosts-charlie-kirk-comments/

Honestly, it's hard for me to know whether to post about the Kimmel situation in that separate primetime Kimmel thread -- or here in the politics thread -- because it's equally relevant to both.  Both threads are valid.  I don't think it matters which thread we use.  Just sayin' check both for updates.

I've tried posting in both but I just don't have the personal time/energy right now to continue posting in both.

Well not entirely.

ABC/Disney is putting Kimmel back on the air, but many stations won't air it.  The Sinclair-owned ABC channels still won't air Kimmel, at least not yet, and that's a lot of stations. -- update on page five (Link) of the Kimmel primetime thread.

Edit to add: the Nexstar-owned stations are refusing as well, at least for tonight.

All I can say is, I really hope those viewers who get ABC on a Sinclair- or Nexstar-owned affiliate really love those "Gomer Pyle" reruns.

I assume these are the remarks that got Kimmel canceled. He knew exactly what he was doing with this and bless him for it. The biggest weapon we have against MAGA right now is the truth.

Thank you.

In the end, 'twas the money that talked.

Actually it was this one, which has nothing big in it. The FCC chair objected to Kimmel's suspicion that Kirk's murderer might be rightwing.

Kimmel's comment at about 2 minutes in:
"We had some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them"
