I just watched a few minutes from some other episodes and I've become convinced that were helping his campaign. Also I think they're using him to try and start WWIII or something. During the actual election night episode, they had a countdown clock going and shout out "we won" win they realise he's going to win. The one from this weekend has repeated proclamations of "our darling Trump" and that he's going to listen to Putin when it comes to global affairs and no need for Russia to be afraid.

Yep. I'm sure Putin will be encouraging Trump to start poisoning his enemies any day now,

I was reading an article at AV Club about an Adult Swim artist leaving in part because of a new anti-Semitic show they are airing (and partly because of their misogynistic hiring practices), and it's disturbing reading comments sections of pseudo-intellectual wankfests that make up that site and seeing so many anti-Semitic and Breitbart-type trolls pop up. The people there, who are so used to being in their own world, clearly don't have any way to react to how what was once seen as ironic or meaningless now being open hate speech (a word many at places like that would likely decry as "PC" - I remember so many of them clapping like seals when Patton Oswalt was railing against PC early this year). This is why so many trying to seem cool for the last few decades by deriding "PC" was so dangerous - it slowly but surely created a climate where the more disgusting things you say, the bigger a martyr you become.

There's now a well-cultivated echo chamber online that breeds hate and harassment. It's been building for a while but it seems like it was only this year that many took notice, especially of the anti-Semitism, which I think some, especially those in the media, naively assumed did not happen in America.

Interesting. I guess I'm not surprised.  I've always had mixed feelings on the topic of amnesty. On the one hand I do think there is a pretty strong case that having too many immigrants at once depresses wages and helps business owners, which is why people like Reagan were for it. On the other hand, the idea of mass deportation doesn't sit well with me at all.

I was really hoping the democrats would make a better case for it than the usual "we are a nation of immigrants". Yes, and at one point we were a nation of slave owners. What we were or are tells me nothing about what we should be. Looking at countries like Japan does tell us what happens when you have negative population growth and an aging population. That's the case I wanted to hear and didn't because policy was lost in the reality show circus.

Also, I think the democrats were a little afraid to really dig into the topic might alienate some core voters. I just hope we do better next time because I think this is one of the topics were we lost he election, but it didn't have to be that way.

In the past few years more people left the country and returned to their country of origin than vice versa, which means it's a lot less of an issue than it was before. And lastly, as long as people hiring undocumented immigrants are allowed to get away with it without being heavily fined and penalized, immigration reform is pointless. We have a day labor camp right down the street from where I live where men wait for contracting jobs, because people will pay and I'm pretty sure that some of the workers are undocumented.

Here is my question: why are undocumented immigrants unwilling to go through the legal channels toward citizenship (or at least resident alien status)?  Is there too much government "red tape"?  Do immigrants wishing to enter the US have to jump through too many metaphorical hoops to be here?  Why do they enter illegally and take the risk of being deported (aside from the pat "they want their piece of the American dream" answer)?

It's a serious question  by the way, and I apologize for being so dense on the subject.

It depends on individual situations, because every undocumented immigrant has different reasons, but for the most part it's about having to go back to their country of origin. If they do make themselves known and opt to go through the process to become a citizen, it's not uncommon for someone to be deported. It's a long and complicated process.

I certainly think that's what happened to my father.  Even though he had married my mother, who is a U.S. citizen, he never renewed his work visa, which expired the same year as their nuptials.  And he never got around to addressing this until he retired in 2012 and needed his "green card" in order to receive Social Security benefits.  Unfortunately, the week he was supposed to appear for a follow-up appointment with our local immigration office, he passed away unexpectedly.

In that case, wouldn't it be just simpler just to apply for visas or citizenship from their country of origin BEFORE coming over here?  Or is there something I'm overlooking?

I think it takes a long time and it's expensive. I imagine people fleeing from Central America (for example) with their children don't have the time or the money. Plus it isn't like everyone who applies gets in. I know they put an emphasis on family reunification and I also think there is some kind of lottery system, but I've never looked into exactly how it works.

The need to find a group, any group, to blame for Hillary losing continues:

http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/11/hillary-clinton-2016-women-214454

Lesson Four: The Federal Government Should Have Stayed Out of the Bathroom

Women tend to be big preservers and enforcers of the cultural status quo. When feminism entered into an accord with social justice warriors who complain about “cis-women” (in other words, women whose gender identity matches the sex on their birth certificate—the opposite of transgender women), remade sisterhood into siblinghood and campaigned for transgender bathrooms, it activated a not-too-far-below-the-surface longing for authoritarianism in many middle-of-the-road women. Gay marriage was a big leap forward. Feminism and the lesbian and gay rights movement have long found common ground—it's one of the many ways that women can be in this world. But in the past five years, the folks in the trans-movement insisted that being a woman was no longer a matter of biology and a lifetime of accrued experience but one of preference. Some feminists, well-represented by Elinor Burkett, balked. They were shouted down. And instead, younger feminists dropped the gendered pronouns and started calling each other “they.” But when women’s rights and trans rights become allied, a lot of people, many of whom were women, started to feel like cultural mores were changing too fast.

I'm not going to act like everyone is fine with this or that anyone who "balked" at it is a bigot. A woman I know who is not a bigoted person as far as I can tell was confused and unhappy with the talk of bathroom changes, because of all the fearmongering that men are going to dress as women and use bathrooms as a place to rape and attack. But she voted for Hillary - happily. And I just don't believe this type of issue moved a lot of votes. It's just more othering and scapegoating. This is an old argument and it's one that was used to exclude and shame lesbians from feminist groups - they called gay women "the lavender menace." And here we are in 2016 with a new spin on the same old thing.

Women like this Peggy person are why so many are adamant about the failures of older white feminists. Even when that's not always fair, people like this undercut any chance at everyone coming together, because it's always easier to use a catastrophic election loss to score points.

I can only speak from experience (as an admittedly well off white woman from a country that the US has a good relationship with) but I assume it's a combination of three things:

1. the process is long and expensive

2. if they find out your there on an expired visa or illegally, they will take you into custody with zero qualms about it (trust me- I know). The people who are there on expired visas or that can afford to just take the option to go back to your home country and accept the punishment (basically pay this fine and don't come back for x amount of years) but the poorer illegals will just end up in the detention centers/jail indefinitely or in limbo. The detention centers are not some place you want to be and I imagine most illegal immigrants know this and have stories about it

3. Even if you do everything you are suppose and follow all the rules, they can still end up not approving you and sending you back. For a lot of them it's probably not worth the risk.

The head of the SEC is stepping down which means Trump will get to name her replacement as well as two other member of the commission because the GOP refused to confirm Obama's nominee. Any leftie who voted against Hillary because she was too cozy with Wall Street just turned Wall Street into a Trump casino. It's 2007 all over again.

    • I liked the food poisoning angle on Thursday because I said beforehand that I would be annoyed if Vanessa was not there at her BFF's party. And I loved they already planned ahead in the dialogue. lol.   But watching the scene (and a bit of a rewind), it hit me. Wait is she...??? Ooo gurrrl. lol.
    • I'm not at all surprised the 10 lowest-rated episodes are all from Season Seven. Moving The Golden Girls from 9 p.m. to 8 p.m. was foolish.
    • As the folklore goes, Love Boat episodes generally had one "heart" story, one "laughs" story, and one "tears" story. I guess Hotel just stuck with "heart" and "tears."
    • I thought food poisoning was an odd reason for Vanessa to miss the party.  That's why I appreciate reading everyone's comments and theories on this thread.  Oh!!  It hadn't occurred to me to speculate that she might be pregnant. I figured that she and Doug ate different things.  But pregnancy fits better.  I did think Shanice's dialogue delivery was slightly awkward (unusual for her)... but that would make sense if Shanice knew Vanessa had a pregnancy test but Vanessa said don't tell Doug.  I love all this theorizing/speculating, especially since we have no idea what will happen.
    • I want that as well, but given how much I've been playing catch-up during some personal/family drama, it's been background music with very little to hold my interest. Then I saw a spoiler and rolled my eyes.   Very. I guess JG is hitting another of his low points.
    • Well...unexpected wiggle room is still wiggle room.   I went back and finally rewatched Friday's episode (along with Thursday's). And God, how those episodes flowed. It did help that Zimmerman did the breakdowns for both so the plot threads were cohesive. I do wonder if she did it today as well. Martin and Tate also of course did good scripts. And I might have to take back my earlier comment about the crowd. While it was not like Nicole's Award Event where I felt there were more extras (and was in the minority on that), I felt this one did not have enough (also in the minority). But on a rewatch, I did like that Production actually did a fairly decent job of covering it up so kudos.    I also wanted to take the moment to say the majority of the week before last (and this past week) were full of cliffhangers. Perhaps not what is used to, but they were there. And I loved that since the majority of said cliffhangers were connected to Silk Press Sheila, it gave an intensity and build to the last week leading to this superb episode that gave us not only an old school soap reveal (complete with moments to let the scenes breathe, but annoyed in how other scenes which were also good did not compare...another sign of knowing when a reveal is great) but, THREE cliffhangers!!! Well-done, Cliffhanger Friday!!!   Ms. Mann and Ms. Michelle were clearly the stars. I've said it once someone mentioned it and I'll say it again...Ambyr just gives so much SMG's version of Kendall on AMC in Eva, and I love that. And that reveal on Silk Press Sheila...WOW. Great to have confirmation that BILL was the lawyer. Even better to see Silk Press interacting with all of the Duprees and not being a bit scared. And yes, I caught that she was preggers at the same time as Nicole. I also caught in the Martin vs Ted scene when he was talking about the timeline was another clue...since we discussed the timeline during Kat's birthday party episodes and how odd it was that Silk Press Sheila would celebrate Eva's birthday if the weeks were off. UNLESS...they're not. I just feel they would not be mentioning it unless SilkPress has a 90s DAYS Sami Trump card incoming. And 90s DAYS Sami Brady ALWAYS had a trump card. So...looking forward to today. lol.    I'm also going to be in the minority about the next thought. I thought Maurice did a good job as Ted in the reveal scenes. Though I do agree that compared to everyone else...even his FOINE doctor friend...he was the weak leak. DD was giving and she was in the background reacting. The Avengers...I mean...the Duprees closing ranks...was great and also showed how in sync the actors were. Naomi being sure Chels was not filming THIS time was a hoot. And I lived for Kat's shade among the mess. I'm happy that we are here at this reveal with OriginalTed since the rumor (marking preemptions) we are a little under two weeks to go before he's out.   I liked the layers. One thing that I like about this show. We usually mention something here and then the show writers have it mentioned either in episode or immediately in the next. The SilkPress/Eva picture last week. Where is Naomi/Vanessa this week of episodes. And they got to it. Well-played. I also like the reveal that Martin knew SilkPress as a kid, calling back to that weird scene with the brownie. I mentioned the Bill-as-Lawyer scene, calling back to Bill/Vernon's first alone scene. The reveal of all of SilkPress's many names. The fact that Andre and Dani continue to grow closer and closer and had a near-miss...something this show knows how to do extremely well for me. Their near-misses built up the drama and story, and I see how much I'm invested when we have them. The whole Silk Press Sheila story being the best example.    I see from a few of the comments some of you all are already thinking about those consequences toward Bill that I was thinking about on Friday.

And while I did not like the Vanessa/Doug scenes at first view...though I love they followed up on her food poisoning phone call on Thursday...I liked it on second watch. Partly because it gave another hint that Doug has some idea of what Vanessa is doing...if not who.  Partly because I had assumed that Doug got poisoned, too. Seeing it was just Vanessa confused me since I thought they were out at dinner pre-party. That said...I go back to my original thought in that moment. Has Vanessa being having all this sex without protection and we are going to get a WTD with Doug, Diego, and whoever else she has been with? Uh oh?    And I continue to also love how flashbacks are used. Rare do they show a flashback to a prior episode unless it's important so those are well done. And then you have the flashbacks like the one with Bill/Dani that informs the audience. And I loved that green dress. But tbf, I loved the feistiness of her red dress. Andre was not alone in taking her in.    And someone mentioned it the other day and I wanted to echo it. One thing I like about this show that I don't see much in the other soaps to this degree has been that several of the characters have their own personal style for sure, but the men's style really have stood out for me since its started. Ted being a clear example with his turtlenecks and general...for lack of better word at the moment manly...to him. I like that about the men where other men styles on other soaps just blend together.    Looking forward to Kat v Eva, Anita vs Silk Press Sheila, and Nicole vs Ted today.    Did I mention I was happy Clifton was back?
    • I’ll take a pass on the lecture, because you've overestimated my concern with your feedback, but thanks for the enthusiasm. Your claims of not wanting to get into an argument over every post are unfortunately voided by your impulsive need to add into discussions that are none of your concern. Finally, you may wish to check the definition of coy, because you've used it incorrectly twice in reference to my writing.  I promise that I do not intend to be coy with you.  Or don't look it up and just continue to be incorrect; as usual.
    • I guess it's because the stories on "Hotel" tended to be very...melodramatic, lol?  I mean, it seems like every episode had long-lost lovers reuniting or people finding out someone they knew and/or loved was dying.  And then there was the time Anne Baxter was strung out on dope, lol. Brandon Stoddard must've envied what the other Brandon (Tartikoff) was doing at NBC.
    • Given some of the things that have been said I am going to quote the preface to an analysis I researched & posted about the desired demos when JFP was EP of AW. And, that is more than enough about that, from me.
    • The thing that I am stuck on is that the in studio scenes in Egypt started airing in mid-October. It seems very strange that they would have planned to have a couple of weeks of studio scenes airing before they started showing location footage. Normally even though some scenes in a remote-infused storyline are in studio, they would start airing a mixture of studio and location footage at the same time. I suspect they had put Arizona in their back pocket well before the Achille Lauro (hence Hawk arriving in September) and possibly moved up the Egypt in-studio action so that the remote Arizona piece unfolded during November. The Achille Lauro may have been the final straw but I would bet it was not the first time they considered the risk. I have found one somewhat contemporaneous reference published on October 19th but pinned to an October 7th* "diary entry" mentioning that the location shoot in Egypt had been changed to Arizona. "International terrorism has its effect on daytime drama, too. Another World producers had scheduled an elaborate and expensive location shoot in Egypt this fall, But with the serious military attacks and hijackings going on, they decided to play it safe. They are going to Arizona instead. The cast members involved were disappointed but understood the decision." *Undated, but specified as the Monday before Melody Thomas's wedding to Ed Scott. But of course it's possible that the first draft referred to Egypt and was revised after October 7th to mention the cancellation before it went to press. But even making the decision the week of October 7th seems tight to get the Egypt scenes to air on the 17th/18th. I would love to find something from a daily news cycle that would be clearer about the dates.
