OLTL Discussion: Week of December 1-5

I hope you're mistaken (or it's wishful thinking as you suggested), because if Jess/Brody/Gigi/Rex are the new backbone of the show, I am not long for this show. Rex and Gigi in particular are incredibly weak IMO and have no real ties to the core veteran characters to provide that compliment you speak of. And I think your happiness over Natalie's backburner status is premature.

Dorian is absolutely despicable! I cant believe she attacked Marty the way she did. That was beyond vile and disgusting and she needed a Viki slap for it.

OLTL has a big problem and its that its filled with a bunch of useless characters. With budget cuts and the economy down, they could sure trim the cast. Noelle, Mo, Vanessa, Lola, Antonio, Layla, Cris, Sarah and Talia (love the last 2, but still pointless) all need to get the boot. They do not add anything to the show. Way too much dead weight around

They've been doing that for years Cheap. Then they'll cull a few characters and I think they're getting back on track, and all of the sudden they'll bring on five new ones that add nothing. IMO you add to the cast for one reason and one reason only -- to drive story. You bring on someone to act as a catalyst for the main characters. Overtime, they may work their way into the framework of the show (ie., Rex), but OLTL always has way too many characters that seem to serve no purpose. I get that my favorites aren't necessarily everybody elses, and I know that some of the characters I don't care for are popular with others. But more importantly, I recognize that some of the characters I don't care for actually create story for those I do (as well as drive their own stories), and that they are necessary. But there are way too many characters on OLTL that do nothing but sit around and act as sounding boards, and there are whole subplots going on right now that just aren't very impactful and don't get any screentime anyway. They just get stuck in the middle of an episode here and there.

I don't have a problem seeing Noelle and Moe or other recurring characters (Carlotta, etc). They're recurring, I doubt we will suddenly be deluged with a story about Noelle's secret daughter. If I was going to bitch about Noelle and Moe I might as well say dump Roxy or something, and what purpose would that serve? As for Antonio and Talia, I like 'em. And I doubt Vanessa will hang around.

Well we saw quite a bit of them the last time they were on (1968). And I don't think I am really bitching about Noelle and Moe specifically. The way they used Dr. Joplin and Janet was effective IMO. But now they're gone. And I am a HUGE Layla/Tika Sumpter fan, and as much as I hate to admit, my complaint extends to her. Use the talent they have. I guess I am just bitching in general. LOL. I don't have a problem with Moe and Noelle, anymore than I do Vanessa and Lola, or many other examples.

My problem with Moe and Noelle is that when they show up, it's always the saaaaaaame daaaaaaamn thiiiiiiiiiiing. All the *wink wink, nudge nudge* comments about making paaaah, how they used to feud by now they're lovin, and all that. I give props for having them do something this time around, with the whole thing with Moe working for Dorian and such. Roxy has a place and does things when she shows up. 90% of the time, she's comic relief, but she also has dramatic moments, moments where she actually matters and has a purpose. Moe and Noelle, so far, have dropped in to spread the giggles for a few days, that's about it. If RC wants them around, he needs to get to work developing them.

Whaaaa? You forget that last time they added some romance. We saw Jeremiah and Rosa fall in love, and Moe and Noelle became engaged. Didja swoooooon? . . . me neither.

They're gimmicky. Although I didn't mind them so much today. The scenes with Roxy explaining Llanview's history were funny, and who else is she going to explain Llanview's history to (in her own inimitable fashion)?

Marty's been begging for the TRUTH since she's returned from the dead, but only wants to hear the sugarcoated version told by Nora and Cole where she's the perfectly perfect Saint of Llanview. She can't handle it when someone like Dorian tells her how the cow ate the cabbage and that's the version she needs to hear if she's ever to regain what little common sense she once had.

I actually TIVO'd this show for the first time since, well I guess Asa's funeral. Before that, it was 2002!

Welcome back Tea! Hope you are written as the take-no-prisoners attorney that showed up in Llanview in the first place! And not because I have any love for this version of Todd (that's my one stumbling block lol...), but because anything is better than the wimpy Tea who sewed up the picture of Blair and the kids and handed it back to Todd on that stupid island lol.

I dunno, alot of the characters you listed have just arrived, so their full story potential has yet to hit the screens yet. Like Vanessa and Lola, their story is still in the early stages, still unfolding. It's so obvious that there is more to Vanessa than what meets the eye, so I don't expect her to staying too long on the canvas. As for Lola, she could easily leave, it all depends on what RC has in store for these two. As for Noelle and Mo, well like Vanessa and Lola they've just decided to move to Llanview, their story has yet to start. I believe that RC will show Moe and Noelle discussing more than pie and etc. A part of me is thinking that RC might do a Dorian/Moe/Noelle triangle. So it won't all be about pies and foods with french names.

As for the Vegas and their women, to each their own. I think Antonio and Talia are good when their not shoved down our throats and are useful storywise as cops determined to get to the truth. And isn't Sarah's portrayer leaving the show?

I do agree though that Layla is pretty useless.

If you're right and it gives Dorian a story -- I am all for it. Although the prospect of Dorian competing for Moe's affections vs. Noelle kind of creeps me out. It makes me think Dorian's saying "Viki went out and found herself a blue collar guy and look how well that's working out for her."

As for Antonio and Talia. I like them fine. I don't object to them at all. In fact I liked them a lot in the beginning, but there's a balance to be struck between shoving them down our throats and not giving us enough story and play for them to keep us engaged. I am leaning toward the latter right now. It seems they throw in a love scene every now and they because they are pretty, and they're the resident cops, which if you think about it could be any old dayplayer.

And I am just sick about Layla. But I honestly can't figure out how to fix it, or where she fits.

    • Has anyone ever totted up how many women on GL slept with both father and son(s)? Reva gets a lot of crap for it but she's far from the only one: Claire Beth Blake Olivia Dina Did I miss anyone?
    • I think Long was probably planning to have Claire suffer from Post Partum, but she left the writing staff shortly after Claire had Michelle so that element didn't get explored. And I always assumed that when Claire returned in the late 90s/early 00s.. that she was realizing that she messed up by not staying a part of Michelle's life and became resentful/bitter over her previous choices.  That was my theory.
    • Jenn was a huge part of the success of Days back in the day, and that contribution shouldn't be dismissed.  With that said, I do think her and Jack's time on the show should remain as occasional visits/drop ins. When Missy returns to play Jenn, Jenn is back to being Jenn.   Jenn in her glory days was head strong, fiesty, and was a live wire.... and her scenes with Jack on Friday was classic Jenn with Jack being the voice of reason.   It was the foundation of their relationship back in the day.
    • Claire was always tightly wound, I think what Long was going to do is to throw the three into this impossible situation with no bad guys, Mo, knowing how to take care of kids from growing up but unable to conceive and Claire, who didnt know how to take care of kids and was totally focused on her career, gets knocked up.  Ryder took Claire off the deep end as a convenient way to make story for characters he wasnt interested in (though Pratt blames McTavish) with little effort. It was later explained to be a brain tumor (though why was she a bitch again when she returned?) \ Claire did sleep with Rick, she was his first!
    • I'm sorry, truly I am, but this literally made me LOL. Tempting fate, much?

    • Oh, I have very little doubt that Missy feels some way personally and privately.  Donna was just saying she actively spoke out against Days in public in reference to the gay storylines, which she did not. I don't have super strong feeling about Jen one way or another.  She was always a side character to me.  I still think Missy is Jen regardless of her stupid beliefs.
    • I hated the swap-over; Clayton Norcross, to me, was far superior in the role of Thorne than Jeff Trachta ever was. And the recast left me disliking Thorne when he was the superior son to me. As for Teri Ann Linn, I feel like she got the raw deal. Kristen was very clear as a forefronting character, especially in her rivalry with Stephanie, and it feels like she was dropped off for Felicia, and they never returned it. Not to mention the subpar recast with Tracy Melchior in 2001. Someone like Brenda Epperson (ex-Ashley, Y&R) would've been more suited for that role.
    • I just remember when Leo was marrying Craig (?), Greg Rikaart stated a line and made direct eye-contact with Melissa Reeves, and when the camera cut to her, she looked away.

Rikaart had a mission that day, and he succeeded.
