Texas! Discussion Thread

Good question.  It seemed to me at the time, that Reena, Kevin, Striker, and Victoria were created for Another World, and the idea of sending them back to Texas came along later.  Especially since they changed the Bellman family so much, when Texas premiered.  I really enjoyed Reena on AW as Pat's romantic nemesis, since Pat had never really had a long-term enemy before.  That was by far, Pat's best post-Lemay storyline, in my opinion.

J____ and/or possibly an ardent fan have many sockpuppets which are largely inactive but which @Toups and @Errol inexplicably refuse to ban. Donna should be very carefully regulated at the very least, but I guess that would take too much time away from showing up every four months to tell us you'll be back after lunch.

Does anyone recall a soap-board member (I think it was on WOST) who re-published his daily summaries of the Hitopah plotline from when he was a boy?

It was really fun because he was a teenager at the time, and his daily musings were interwoven with the plot summaries.  I vaguely recall it as a PDF of his actual handwriting from the time when the soap aired.  I stopped watching Texas after Iris left, so my only memory of the plotline was that blog/board posting.

What a great memory! Yes, someone had posted the plot summaries back in the early 2000s. It was an over-the-top story that ran for about four or five months and that featured a location shoot during the climax. One of the best parts of the story was the friendship between Ruby and Lurlene, especially as they tried to dispose of Beau Baker's mummified corpse.

Of all the science-fiction type plots used on nearly all the soaps in the 1980s and 90s, I would say the Hitopah storyline on Texas was the best, even though it gets little attention from soap historians and apparently did not cause a rise in the ratings. I am never a fan of science-fiction on soaps (aside from Dark Shadows), but at least Hitopah was connected to the geographic region of Texas, a Native-American legend (a fictional legend), and the oil business.  So they didn't just pull it from thin air and force it on an otherwise unconnected show.  Although outlandish, it was somewhat organic to the show.  I also thought it was well written and well paced. And they attempted to pull it off as believably as possible.

    • Amanda Setton and Rena Sofer was once again really good in today's episode.  As a Lucky/Liz fan, I didn't like their scenes either.  And they are nowhere near a proposal because they haven't been given a real story.
    • I don't think Lulu is written that badly.  Lucky they do seem to have no real interest in. I wonder if this is another story they have decided to wrap up abruptly as it makes zero sense to have what would have clearly been serious conflict between Liz and Lucky just get shrugged off by her. Maybe the intense viewer negativity toward Kristina got through to them.
    • This is what kills me about the complaints that the show is moving too slow. I don't think any of the other soaps has revealed as much as BTG has in the same time frame. Not only are stories moving but it's rotating as well. Y&R has been teasing that Dumas character since February with no reveal in sight. B&B was one day for the majority of May with very limited storylines. GH had a strong final week of May but the storylines had been dragging for months prior to that. I appreciate that BTG doesn't focus so much on recapping and keeps the stories moving. I have anticipation about certain ones like Martin and Anita's secrets but I'm not worried about it because the writers have proven they will keep these stories moving at a strong pace.
    • John and Marlena's love story is over.

As I started watching in 1993, and they became my favourite couple because of storylines like The Affair, Maison Blanche, The Possession, Aremid, and The Secret Room - just five straight years of amazing stories.  The funny thing is, in all of those stories, John and Marlena were never truly together, but I was fine with that because I knew how much they loved each other - Deidre and Drake just had so much chemistry and made it so believable.   Deidre was fantastic today, especially in that last scene where Marlena told John it was okay for him to rest now.  I agree with @j swift, that having a body for Marlena, and everyone else, to say goodbye to was the right choice, as well as just having Marlena there alone as John dies.   Marlena: John, I love you so…. John: I love you too, Doc. Marlena: I need you to listen to me.  You have put up the bravest fight I have ever seen. The thing is I….I know you’re weary, I know you’re suffering…..If you need to go, it’s okay. I know that you’re worried me, about the children….You have given us all the love we will ever need. We will always have you in our memories. We will always hold you in our hearts. So…it’s okay if you rest now. You can rest now.   Bo and Hope are my second favourite couple, so for them to be part of this episode made it even more special.  I loved the inclusion of Zack - in the flashback and in the family scene at the Brady Pub.  John dies and Bo wakes up.  Two great love stories intertwining and showcased (loved the flashbacks!) in today's very emotional episode.     Great recap @Bright Eyes
    • Given the way both Lulu and Lucky are written I can guess.  Do Lulu and Lucky even speak?  Lol Liz is useful to prop one of Frank's pets when they are failing, I suppose. It's shame GH loves to do the opposite of what fans want.
    • Lol. I understand. For me, it's just John and Marlena are the couple that introduced me to DAYS and Young Me had such a crush on him since I saw his attractive self at Maison Blanche. And whether I regularly viewed or not, I always tried to stay checked in to how they were doing. Also Drake always was a cool man in interviews so I know today's episode is going to hit where it hurts.   I know I will have to watch eventually. Work, life, and internet connection are setbacks without me stalling. And I can say that I'm stalling somewhat. At least...like GH episodes on my system...I have some time before they get deleted, but I'm going to be a sobbing mess.

he’ll talk more as you continue your viewing  it’s such a jarring transition in ‘93 to Courtland Mead with his hammy sitcom delivery
    • Frank does not care about them and resents having to write for at least one of them.
    • I’m watching it tonight. I’ve been watching the new episodes simultaneously as I catch up in May
