German soaps: GZSZ, UU & AWZ

From a creative angle, I'd say GZSZ is still the best. AWZ and UU aren't bad, either, though.

The reintroduction of Chris and Corinna on UU earlier this year was a good move and it helped bringing the core Weigel family back to the center. However, UU's ratings are hit and miss. On some days, they reach a market share between 10 and 12 percent, and on some days, they barely scratch at 7 percent – which is alarming. The show is now sandwiched between two editions of the magazine "Explosiv".

On GZSZ, another actor is taking an extended break: In addition to Niklas Osterloh (Paul) and Thaddäus Meilinger (Felix), Jörn Schlönvoigt (Philip) won't appear on the show for at least six months. Schlönvoigt has been a contract cast member since December 2004.

Also, there's going to be a recast: Luis Ahrens, Nina's son and Toni's brother, returns to the show this fall. From 2017 to 2019, Maximilian Braun played the teenager. Despite being a contract role, Luis only had one major storyline when he was caught masturbating on video by his classmate Brenda and was subsequently blackmailed by her. In May 2019, Luis participated in a student exchange and went to New Zealand (or Australia, the show kind of mixed this up afterwards). Now, 23-year old actor Marc Weinmann steps into the role. Weinmann promises that "Luis has changed a lot during his time abroad". He could be a potential boyfriend for Moritz

When RTL announced GZSZ's third spin-off "NIHAT" earlier this year, it was supposed to be a streaming series only with all 10 episodes being released on TVNOW. However, TPTB have changed their minds and they're taking a huge risk: The whole series will be broadcast on RTL's main channel – in GZSZ's timeslot and during primetime. On September 22nd and 23rd, five episodes of "NIHAT" will air back-to-back between 7.40 and 10.15 pm. GZSZ will not air new episodes on these two days. "NIHAT", which deals with Timur Ülker's Nihat Güney looking for his birth mother in Hamburg, will also feature another familiar face: Gamze Senol, who played Nihat's cousin Shirin Akinci on GZSZ from 2017 to 2020, is part of the cast. In July 2020, Shirin left Berlin in the dead of night after being accidentally involved in Alexander Cöster's horrifying death.

Last week on GZSZ: Nazan catches Felix receiving oral sex in his car, Gerner takes revenge on Jay for exposing his daughter's nude pics, and Leon and Nina are close to breaking up.

Next week on GZSZ: Yvonne receives a shocking diagnosis regarding her eyesight, Lilly is about to lose her job thanks to Jonas's manipulation, and Nazan puts her failed wedding to Felix behind herself.

Even before the spin-off "NIHAT" has started airing, RTL announced that GZSZ will receive a third online spin-off: "Leon – Glaub nicht alles, was du siehst" (Leon – Don't Buy Into Everything That You See") focuses on the character of Leon Moreno, GZSZ's second longest-serving character. Daniel Fehlow has played Leon since April 1996, although with several breaks. On the original show, Leon leaves town next week after breaking up with Nina (Maria Wedig). In the spin-off, Leon moves to the coast of the Baltic Sea with his teenage son Oskar. There he sets up a beach restaurant and meets a new woman – who looks exactly like his dead wife Verena! Actress Susan Sideropoulos, who starred on GZSZ from 2001 to 2011, will play opposite Fehlow. On the main show, Verena was killed off in a car accident in the summer of 2011. Whether she returns as Verena or as a lookalike is still unknown.

In other casting news:

  • Jakob Graf (Luke Färber) departs UU in the episode airing September 13th, 2021. Graf joined the cast in November 2019 as the unfathomable Luke who arrived in Cologne after the mysterious death of beloved Irene Weigel in Thailand. After murdering his sister Nika's parole officer, Luke flees town.
  • On AWZ, Berrit Arnold (Daniela Bremer) has been placed on contract after being recurring for almost a year. Daniela is Kim's offbeat mother and Marian's current lover. Berrit Arnold first rose to fame in the mid-90s when she starred as bisexual Annalena Bergmann on the defunct soap "Marienhof". She has also played a minor role on GZSZ.

There are 3 more Dailys in Germany that seem to be forgotten even though they are running for more than 13 to 15 years.

Rote Rosen (Red Roses) since 2006 and has over 3400 Episodes. It was more of a Novela concept but got more structured into a normal Daily in recent years.

Sturm der Liebe (Storm of Love) since 2005 and has this novela type of style going on but has been more a normal daily in recent years. It aired over 3650 Episodes.

And a real Daily that no one seems to watch but still has made it over 2800 Episodes since 2007:

Home is Home (Dahoam is Dahoam).. It plays in the Bavarian Region of Germany and they even try to speak in their Bavarian language even though it got criticed for not being true to the culture. Its a good Soap but a lot of Cast Changes in recent years.

Well, they are not forgotten – I just don't consider them typical "daily soaps".

ARD labels "Sturm der Liebe" and "Rote Rosen" as telenovelas. Even though they have been running continously since 2005 and 2006, respectively, they are produced in "cycles", i. e. the main couple is replaced after ~ 200 episodes. In addition, both shows clearly attract an older audience (there was a running gag that everytime "Sturm der Liebe" is pre-empted, there are riots in every nursing home across the country). Both shows are rumored to be cancelled after the next season because ARD wants to restructure their afternoon line-up and both shows are quite expensive to produce.

"Dahoam is Dahoam" only runs on ARD's Bavarian station BR and is very popular in the Southern states – but it does indeed have a strong local color and represents many clichés that people in other regions expect of Bavaria. (I'm from the Northwest and don't like the Bavarian dialect at all

) I think they have a market share of 2 or 3 percent.

That'll be sad if Sturm der Liebe gets cancelled. I loved Boris and Tobias as a couple. I was a bit peeved they brought back the actor that plays Boris as a straight twin brother instead of making Boris and Tobias the main couple for a season, since I don't believe they've ever had a gay couple as the "main couple"  but at least they did get a happy ending. Which is more than I can say for Olli and Christian when Verbotene Liebe was getting cancelled.

I've heard that the Nihat - Spin-Off was well received compared to the Sunny one.

I am not really into those Spin-Off Shows but the Leon Moreno one that is coming is something i am interested in coz Susan Siederopolous as Verena Koch returns. She was one of the longest Cast Members back in the day and one of my favorites.

People in Germany seem to freak out about this comeback and have the wildest theories lmao I would like to see their reactions to some stuff from Days of Our Lives.

Hi!

I would love to start watching GZSZ but I desperately need German subtitles to watch it.

Can you confirm that the TvNow.De website is the only website where I can find the subtitled episodes? If you have any other tips, I'd love to hear that.

Apparently Susan will not be returning as the late Verena, but as a different character. She's probably a lookalike – or maybe Leon just wants to believe that she looks like Verena.

Moritz did have a storyline and even a short-term boyfriend (Fabio, image below). After being gay-bashed, he wanted to fight back and started working out to gain physical strength. However, he got into some legal trouble (again).

Right now, they're slowly developing a triangle between Moritz, the Luis recast and Luis's girlfriend Miro (played by Sara Fuchs, another new contract role).

TVNOW (soon rebranded as RTL+) is the only website where you can legally watch GZSZ and the other soaps. RTL is very strict when it comes to their copyrighted material so they take everything else down quickly.
At least the subtitles on TVNOW are accurate – the auto-generated subtitles on youtube or other platforms are just horrible gibberish. None of the grammar makes sense.

Btw, TVNOW has almost finished uploading all episodes from 1998. So only the years 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 are still missing – everything else is complete. Out of these missing years, only the period between 2002 and 2003 was worth watching. 1999 to 2001 were probably the show's worst era because there was too much focus on the teenagers.

What??? GZSZ 1999 to 2001 was the worst? I love different opinions but that is some weird opinion. It was quiet the most popular time.

I mean the vets like Clemens, Daniel, Elisabeth, Jo Gerner, Barbara were heavily involved.

1999 was one of my favorite years when Leon Moreno hooked up with a women from a MOB Boss. That dude made Leons life a living hell. One of my favorite storylines. And the Andy Lehmann Story when he was in that cult.

And Gerner and Barbara driving Katja Wettstein crazy.

Or in 2000 when Barbara kidnapped Nico and Coras child.

The show didn't had that much teenager. Only Marie, Kai, Moritz, Sandra.. All the others were in their early-mid 20's through 50's. It was quiet balanced when it comes down to the age. We had much more Teenage/Youth Story during rhe 2010's tbh

Yeah, you named the only stories of that time that could be considered good

Please register in order to view this content

Leon's mob story and Gerner and Barbara driving Katja crazy with a zombie happened in early 1999, so I give you that.
Also, Anna's schizophrenia was a good storyline, with her three personalities and then killing her therapist. That also happened in the first half of 1999.
After that, it went downhill quickly.

The Barbara recast destroyed the character and pairing her with the equally bad Peter recast didn't help. To make things worse, they had this awful triangle going on with that Lara chick which lasted forever. IIRC, the actress playing Lara became a contract role before she was quietly dropped from one day to the next.
Xenia was a shrew, and the Bohlstädt family (Chris, Charlotte & Franziska) were duds, hence they were written off in 2000/2001. The actor playing Jan was godawful, and he and Charlotte didn't have the slightest chemistry.
Flo and Martin were simply boring. The only saving grace was Sonja constantly interfering in their love life.
The less I say about Kai, Marie, Moritz and Sandra, the better. I couldn't stand any of them.
Losing Nataly and Fabian was a mistake as I felt both still had enough ties to the canvas. AFAIK, the actress playing Nataly was fired because "her character's story had been told".
I don't remember Clemens, Elisabeth, Daniel or Jo having an important storyline during this time, either.

The only good addition during this period was Senta but it took some time until she had a good story.
Oh, and I forgot about Inka. Too bad she went psycho that quickly. Well, at least she shot Chris.

And re: the Teens – in the late 90s/early 00s, the show was targeted at a (mainly female) teenage audience, hence the monthly "Official GZSZ Magazine" with posters and beauty stuff, the official GZSZ CDs, singing soap actors, the official GZSZ perfume etc. I was a teenager back then as well, and a lot of people in my class watched GZSZ and the other soaps.
These days, GZSZ is mainly targeted at women in their 30s. That's why characters like Katrin, Nina, Yvonne and Maren and their love lifes have become the main focus. 4 women in their 40s/early 50s as lead characters wouldn't have been possible in the 90s since most characters were supposed to be younger than 30 back then (that many actors looked older is a different thing).

@Huntress I loved Kai. He was one of the greatest characters and one of the most hilarious ones. I am still thankful that the producers promoted him from reccuring to contract after that summer 98 story with Alex and his shady friends.

Kai & Marie were cute. Moritz/Kai Bromance was so hilarious and entertaining. That made Kais death even sadder. Kais death was one of the best and most devasting deaths of the entire show.

Only Character i hated was Sandra. I hated the first actress and the recast made it even worse. The producer really tried to throw that character like every day of the week at the audience.

Inka turning psycho made completley sense after what she went through.

Flo/Martin were no Flo/Andy. Thats for sure. But i enjoyed the time when Flo was lost and Martin went looking for her. 2001 was really an annoying year of GZSZ. Only Leons return was memorable and his affair with Cora. But i liked Flos return and happy end with Martin to be honest,

I loved Nadine Dehmel as Nataly.. She was one of my ultimate favorites. I still hate the fact that they fired her. I mean she and Ricky were my ultimate super couple of GZSZ from the 90's. I always hoped Ricky would turn up. I remember that everyone suspected that Ricky would turn up in the shows 2000th Episode. There was even a rumor he would return when Nataly was exiting the show. But i enjoyed her final storyline.

I enjoyed GZSZ from 1996 to 2004. (1992 - 1995 were alright but the acting was hard to overlook sometimes. But it had its own charme to be honest.).. 2004-05 was another weird year. Only Philip and that subway running with his friends was great. But that Lena Bachmann character ruined the mood for me especially after she won that million dollar and that shady character tried to steal it from her for weeks.

Please register in order to view this content

Xenia.. A Character i couldn't stand. The chemistry with Chris was OK.. But i never cared for their storyline. It didn't even made sense that Chris wasn't able to read coz he was a delivery boy or something and had to know where to deliver the mail. Completley bs that all of the sudden he couldn't read.   But i Xenia started to grow on me when Ben Bachmann appeared. The Ben/Xenia storyline was one of my favorites until the break up.

Gerner was involved in the Katja/Barbara story.. A year later Gerner got involved with Nataly after Barbara run her over. I mean a Gerner/Nataly pairing was the most surprising pairing i would've expected and when Nataly gained back her memorie her revenge was so satisfying.

Clemens had this story going on with Anna and after that he started gambling and nearly lost it all.

Daniel and Elizabeth had her breast cancer story going on.
