That makes sense too.

And instead of having Paige fall in love with DIRTYCOPDIRTYCOPDIRTYCOP Tom Ryan, I would've instead introduced a police detective as a love interest for Cathy, who's being stalked by an obsessive fan.

That could have been some good conflict for everyone involved - maybe he'd have some issue with Mack and Karen, and Val would be torn given that Cathy was married to her brother. (not sure if Ben/Cathy would still be a thing here)

 I would've cut Gary.

The pattern across all three CBS primetime soaps in the off the rails plus budget mode era was to salary dump the long-time female cast members and bring on sweet young things hired on the cheap. The long-time male cast members were for the most part spared.

Knots Landing final season the longest-tenured main cast members were Michele Lee, Ted Shackelford, Kevin Dobson, William Devane. Michele took a pay cut to appear in all episodes of the final season and Ted, Kevin, William had their episodes cut during the final season.

Ah I can see it now reading in retrospect…

”In 1988, Dallas was given a much needed shot in the arm when Gary, Val, and the twins moved into Southfork together following the reunion in Knots after Ben was officially declared dead. When an honored Bobby meets his nephew and thanks Gary, Gary tells Bobby he felt his son deserved to share the same name as a good man like Bobby and after Val having a terrible nightmare of Bobby dying…to which Val quickly shushes Gary up saying they’re never supposed to talk about the that dream AGAIN”.

Problem solved 🤣

So two "it was all a dream" resolutions.

Michele Lee really goes hogwild in the first promo.

She looks like she's wearing one of Willona's wigs on "Good Times."

Oh that's lovely to see them still being friendly to each other. I know Kim was always disappointed in being let go from the show.
