Yes, which leads me to be very perplexed. I find it strange that both Scott and Griffith were fired last Friday, per Nelson of course, yet DAYS named its Co-EP replacement within the same day. Y&R, on the other hand, didn't seem to have anyone lined-up for the EP position after Griffith's firing. I think Corday was planning Scott's firing for months, and Tomlin might have secretly have been his back-up plan.

That's because Tomlin was runner up last year when Ed was hired so Tomlin being hired so quickly is no surprise.

Wasn't Heather Hill lead of directing for the beginning of that time period?

Oh, yes! I remember her!

Late 90's it was Heather Hill. Then it was Denney or Foster.

Thank you!

ALTERNATIVELY, they are going to be slow and careful this time....which means the position may be vacant for a time.

That happened when John F. Smith stepped down in 2006. We went without an EP for a few months, and then they promoted Latham.<_<

I hope they don't promote anyone from the current craptastic producing team there. Either hire someone who was there during the show's heyday like David Shaughnessy, or hire someone with a respectable producing reputation.

I'm barely watching any soaps as it is at the moment, I think I'd quit if they hire yet another recycled hack.

Definitely a possibility.

This show is still on a shaky ground and it needs a firm hand who will steer it in the right direction and keep it on that course for a while.

Nelson posted this Press Release at other boards:

Burbank – August 19, 2008 - Corday Productions is pleased to announce that Gary Tomlin has joined DAYS OF OUR LIVES as Co-Executive Producer.

"I have decided that it's in the best interest of the show's future to make this change in order to improve ‘Days’ both visually and emotionally,” said Ken Corday, Executive Producer. “We at ‘Days’ are grateful to Ed Scott for all of his contributions and amazing energy over the past year. Gary Tomlin brings a long successful history of being an actor's producer and a writer's producer to our cast and crew and I know the viewers will see the immediate results of this change for the better."

“I’m very happy to be back at ‘Days’ where I began behind the scenes in the early 80’s,” said Gary Tomlin, new Co-Executive Producer. “It’s wonderful to be given the opportunity to work with Ken Corday.”

Tomlin’s career on daytime serials began in 1973 when he was cast on NBC’s “Search for Tomorrow” as Bruce Carson. He joined the Corday family for the first time as Co-Head Writer for “Days” in 1980-1981 and has since served as Head Writer for “Another World” and “One Life to Live.” In 1997 Tomlin rose to Executive Producer of NBC’s “Sunset Beach” then on to “One Life to Live” in 2001 where the series received its first ever Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Series for the 2002 season.

"Days of our Lives," which will celebrate its 11,000th episode in January 2009, first premiered as a half-hour drama in 1965 and expanded to an hour 10 years later. Today, it remains a consistent favorite among viewers of daytime television serials and continues to lead the competition among younger female viewers.

"Days of our Lives" is produced by Corday Productions Inc. in association with Sony Pictures Television. Executive Producer, Ken Corday, is following in the tradition of his parents, Betty and Ted Corday, who co-created "Days of our Lives" and helmed the series for many years.

is that PR real? because it sure doesnt seem like it...

It is, other sites have picked up on it.

And it's not unlike Corday to say backhanded comments about people he's just fired...

And LMAO at Tomlin's “It’s wonderful to be given the opportunity to work with Ken Corday." He'll find out how nice it is to work with Corday when he settles in there only to be fired in a year's time...

None of the comments in it shock me at all.

It just doesnt read like a normal PR. IDK why...

If it were a spoof, it would be one of the biggest ... But, I join you in thinking it doesn't read right. Seems like something is off about it.

I am moved to reread that interview that Nelson Branco did with Ed Scott at the Daytime Emmys? (It was the interview shared with Maria Bell). I now want to (a) reread to see the "spin" in Scott's talk, and (B) to read his comments on the "importance of the writing" with a fresh eye.

GREAT SCOTT — NEW DAYS AHEAD

Forget sexy — Days of Our Lives’ co-executive producer Ed Scott is bringing reality back to Salem!

Y&R’s loss was Days of Our Lives’ gain when Sony hired Edward J. Scott as co-executive producer! It’s been almost a year since his shocking appointment. Unfortunately, the soap is still in the ratings toilet.

(FYI: The former Y&R honcho’s firing in 2001 stemmed from his on-going feud with Kay Alden, but returned in 2004 as a supervising producer until Sony begged him to jump to Days in 2007. Scott agreed to help salvage their lone series, leaving behind his wife, Melody Thomas Scott).

To be fair, most soaps are. But it should be noted that Days is the only soap opera on its network. And it’s performing and competing quite impressively given the fact that soaps on other networks are faltering despite a block of serials; an advantage Days isn’t afforded.

Moreover, Days has improved leaps and bounds creatively, both in front of the camera and behind. And that’s because Scott wasn’t the only Genoa City defector. The show business veteran immediately poached his former Emmy-winning colleagues, Mike Denney, casting director, Marnie Saitta, supervising producer/director, producer Noel Maxam and director Kathryn Foster to improve the outrageous soap. And so far, they’re on a roll... but there is still lots of work to be done.

During TV Guide.ca’s visit to L.A., we caught up with Scott to check in almost a year later for a status report.

TVG: OK, so what’s taking NBC so damn long to announce Days’ renewal. We all know it’s a done deal.

Ed Scott: It’s always the money.

TVG: The damn money! Is it frustrating?

ES: It used to be frustrating but I don’t care anymore because I know we’re renewed. Listen, we’re just going to do our thing, and they can battle it out behind-the-scenes. The hell with it!

TVG: Do you miss Y&R?

ES: I love everyone at Days, but I do miss the actors at Y&R. There’s a thing about actors… I just get along with them very well. And I respect their craft highly. And luckily, the Days actors are the same. It’s been challenging this past year, but I believe we’ve all come together as a team to produce something we’re all proud of.

TVG: I personally consider you the executive producer of the show, and hopefully, one day you’ll officially take over the show.

ES: Well, thank you, but I love working with Ken [Corday, and am very happy with my current position].

TVG: Do you think it’s a coincidence that Days finally received some much-deserved Emmy love since you’ve been at the helm?

ES: I don’t know. I’m so proud of Judi Evans [ex-Adrienne/Bonnie], Rachel Melvin [Chelsea], and Darin Brooks [Max]. Next year, I want more nominations. Hopefully, this is just the beginning for the show. Days is really good now, and it’s the way it should be. It’s looking good. [Head writer] Dena Higley is writing good story.

TVG: The Emmy telecast didn’t draw in a huge audience this year.

ES: [sighs] I don’t understand why they don’t air the Emmys on a Wednesday night. No one is home on a Friday night.

TVG: It’s a little surreal to see Days tackle a serious social issue with the revelation that Theo is autistic. Even if head writer Dena Higley is basing this on her own personal story [her real-life son is autistic]. Perhaps, she’ll finally watch the show she writes for now…

ES: Well, we’re working through the real surreal stuff that used to be a given on Days. We’re grounded into character-driven storylines. Listen, that’s what daytime soap opera does best. Once we do that, we win. If we try to compete with prime time and their tricks, we lose. It’s as simple as that.

TVG: I know this is a tired, old question but are you worried about the future of daytime? Do you think two to three million viewers is enough to sustain a soap on a major network?

ES: In how long?

TVG: Well, in the next five years. I think there’s two to three million of us who aren’t going anywhere because we’re addicted to torture and tune in to see if soaps will finally ever get it right. That’s the real mystery and suspense in daytime.

ES: Well, I hope so. And thank God for viewers like you! Don’t go anywhere because I think we’re all getting back to the basics. And you’ll be rewarded.

TVG: From your lips…

ES: Listen, we’re re-inventing Days. And I think other shows are going to follow our lead. It has to be good drama, good writing, character-driven storylines, emotional performances, and suspense! That’s what the fans want. There’s no reason to re-invent the wheel…

TVG: And no one’s proved successful with that approach.
