I pay for it on DishNetwork - $9.95 for a monthly subscription. It's about four or five weeks behind the UK. I am rethinking continuing my subscription right now. For the first time since I started watching, I'm starting to get bored with the show.

I really cannot stand the actress who plays Sam Mitchell. I know she's the original (I never saw her before) but I think she's terrible.

Santer says the Mitchells are "the premier family in British soap." All I could say to that is, "That doesn't say much for the others, does it."

I really can't wait for this Christian/Syed stuff to be over. They both behave in horrible, selfish ways, made even worse because we saw no buildup to their relationship and we see no affection between them. If this story was supposed to be done to address how Muslims feel about gays, then throwing around an assortment of anti-gay stereotypes was an odd choice.

Here's his year in review.

I was just coming to talk about the wedding! So there is a gay storyline with that sexy indian man? That story actually sounds good. Eastenders must have changed a lot since the last time I watched. I may want to look at some episodes from this story and I definitely want to see the wedding.

The story sounds a lot better than it actually is. The men playing Syed and Christian are both attractive (although Syed looks like he's going to cry most of the time), but they don't have a lot of chemistry together and neither of them are the strongest of actors. The relationship was not built up to -- not long after they met, Syed made a move on him. Most of their relationship has taken place offcamera. What does take place oncamera is often them being unhappy and being nasty to each other. It's treated as some big shock if they ever even kiss. Their relationship was basically:

Syed: You make me sick/This is wrong.

Christian: I love you and you love me!

Syed: Yes, but I'm miserable. Can you see my face? I'm so miserable.

Now there's this happy wedding plan, and frankly, Syed looks much happier with Amira than he ever did with Christian. Christian is written as the typical bitter ex, who wants to spoil the wedding.

A casual viewer would probably see the relationship as unhealthy and unpleasant and want Syed to be happy with Amira. Or want Amira to dump him, and see Christian and Syed as losers. Syed is generally a whiner and very selfish -- he even convinced his mother that his father was having an affair, so she wouldn't suspect he was the one cheating.

There's no real gay perspective in the story at all, it's just shock value and stereotypes. Christian has had every stereotype in about two years. Being gay-bashed, weeping over the homophobic mother he can't live without, chasing after a teenage boy, being dumped for being too old, sleeping around, wanting to raise a child with his female best friend. I think the only one they've left off is an HIV scare.

The best characters in the story are Syed's parents, Zainab and Masood. The actors are wonderful, have amazing chemistry, can switch from comedy to drama without blinking an eye. So if you tune in to this story I'd suggest their love story more than Christian and Syed.

Hopefully that might change once the new producer arrives, who did some good-ish gay stories on Hollyoaks. As it is now Eastenders hasn't had any since the 90s.

    • I don't expect Lois to be the same person she was 25 years ago, but she's definitely lost a lot of what made Lois unique.  It's clear the show doesn't know how to write for her, and the sole purpose of Lois is to hide this Gio secret.  It's a shame she doesn't interact with more of the canvas.  It's a waste of Rena's talents. I like Brook Kerr most of the time.  She can be hit or miss.  I totally get what you are saying about her line readings too.  I honestly think the character really suffers being stuck in the Curtis pairing.  She's much better than Tanisha Harper's Jordan lol.
    • Friday and yesterday's episode is what daytime television should be. The other shows airing could take a page from yesterday's show.  I loved the rage, hurt and anger Nicole unleashed on Ted.  Daphnee should be up for an Emmy nom for these scenes.  It broke my heart to see how Dana had locked Eva out.  I do feel sorry for Eva.    I am still bumfuzzled as to why Leslie/Dana went to the DuPree's and asked them to accept Kat UNLESS Eva is really Kat's twin (and really Nicole and Ted's daughter that maybe they though they lost or an embryo Dana/Leslie stole??) I loved how Anita and Vernon both shot her down.    Ohhh and let me just say Friday and yesterday was the MOST fire I have seen Martin have since the show started.  Maybe Brandon Clayborn is coming into his own with the role finally.

    • Where to for Dana? She's pissed off the Duprees (most of the cast), alienated her daughter and will she be welcomed by the Have Nots at the diner? Maybe she can befriend Ashley and Derek and liven up their story.
    • Melissa Ordway announced she was moved to recurring back in November but is still credited with the contract cast members.
    • I think of Evan as a smarmy bast*rd. Maybe you'll like that description. You certainly have him pegged correctly since he is just a soldier following "Admiral" Iris's marching orders.
    • So far the only interest I've seen from Evan to Amanda has been listening to Iris's orders to go and seduce her.  So far he hasn't been successful... but who knows. Amanda is unbearable at times. Entitled, spoiled... idiotic. Iris... so blatantly manipulating her and Amanda takes the bait. But I guess... when she gets in trouble... she'll have a chance to learn. That's what makes these shows so interesting.    Oh, no, don't worry. You haven't ruined a thing. Evan has not been on my radar that much... he was not one of the characters I was caring particularly... so nothing much has been changed for me. I don't think he has the stuff to ruin Rachel's life. He's just a pretty guy that can follow orders. Iris on the other hand... is dangerous.

P.S Maybe Evan will surprise me. Who knows.
    • The show has gone back to 10/10 entertainment! I'm glad that I was right in feeling that what were experiencing were growing pains. I'm sure they are not over yet, but I'll know that we always comeback to quality drama. I think it's going to be a hell of ride (in a good way) from this moment on. BTG has that magic that not a lot of shows have. I'll update more... when I'm done catching up.
    • So very glad to hear this. Yesterday I suddenly thought; OMG, what about spoilers, have I just  ruined things for Maxim in getting carried away with interest in Evan, who was so well-written & well-acted. BTW, your fan review of this episode was a sight for eyes that had not seen one of these for a little bit too long, LOL!!!  Mitch is also fascinating to me but in his case it's because he was all in with Janice & her nefarious plan & then he did this turnabout we've mentioned & he basically got off scot-free.
