I hope they won't kill off Jake. The Deans need to have at least one child who might return at some point, and before Kirkwood had him turn into a nightmarish psycho, Jake was a pretty decent character.

He has a nice butt as well.

Samantha Giles is coming back in July, I guess for just a few episodes. They call her "fabulously manipulative," but I don't remember Val really being that way. I liked her more when she became more of a mother figure. It's odd that they say she went on maternity leave last year. She actually left sometime in September or October 2008. She hasn't been back in almost two years. I don't know if she was ever even supposed to come back if the family wasn't being written out.

Seeing as we are entering the final week of stories (seemingly) written by Lucy Allan, I thought it only fitting that we start to mention and recall the memorable stories, those plots and characters that really made you glad you invested your time, energy and emotions in Hollyoaks following on from the mostly successful period under Bryan Kirkwood........

There was going to be an alien story?

LOL UKLAW.....as for something memorable from the Lucy Allen era, the only thing that comes to mind is Warren's death (the mirror falling on top of him in the fire). Other than that, I can't think of anything else.

Ah, Toups, the mirror falling on Warren was actually the last Bryan Kirkwood credited episode (I believe). The episode that followed was the first episode Lucy Allan was credited with.

IIRC, Kirkwood had said in an interview that as long as he was in charge of Hollyoaks, Warren wouldn't pay for his crimes or die, as Warren was a character he had invested so much in. When Kirkwood, and then later Jamie Lomas, decided to leave, it was decided that Warren would leave with Kirkwood's end on the show.

I was willing to give Lucy Allan a chance, seeing as she worked so closely with Kirkwood, and helped put the 3 years together. But then concern started to

abound when reading her first interview (which I believe was Producer's Season 2009). The best way to

describe it is that there was a certain coldness and distance that came from the interview and the promise that the younger characters would be the focus.

The following few months, particularly with the promising but ultimately dull baby-selling storyline amongst others actually saw me withdraw from the show. An inspiration for my own writing it was not...

I've gone off on one again. Pardom me....

I was hoping Allan might have some potential, because by the time she took over I thought the show had been, creatively, bombed out. Kirkwood had kept the ratings up and I guess they were still doing well after Tina's death but the show was pretty much empty. Unfortunately, Allan just seemed to take this as an opportunity to bring in teens and more teens and make everything stupid. There were also stories which were handled very questionably -- what they did with Anita is especially unsettling, as they seemed to just throw a lot of serious problems at her (racial self-loathing; learning she was adopted) only as an excuse to turn her into a scheming shrew. There also seemed to be a lot of random couplings which I still don't quite understand, like Ste/Teresa.

What bothered me the most in that interview at the time was her outright dismissive attitude towards the older characters, who had been one of the better points of the Kirkwood years and who were played by some very fine actors. It sounds like Marquess is going to continue to not do a lot with the older actors, but they are in such a diminished state now, thanks to Allan's tenure, that it doesn't really matter. Thanks to her tenure the show lost superb actors like Tony Hirst, and while I know he might have gone anyway under Marquess, I still miss him.

I also hated the whole Ricky and Duncan are the new Max and OB. NO THEY ARE NOT. Max and OB were able to do silly things because the characters had so much heart and the actors were very talented. You can't just have these two pathetic clowns who can't act and then throw some random Dickens-esque sadface story at them and pass that off as being the new Max and OB.

So all of last week was pretty much a huge bore. I watch Monday's episode, with the McQueens, and I'm thoroughly entertained. They truly make this show.

Um Carl, LOOK what you did. Giving me false hope that Rae was gone ... though this could have been her last episode ... Hmm? Weirdly, I actually kind of liked her today.

Tony was such an ass today, but thank God that terrible pairing is over and done with. Wonder what they got planned for Cindy now? Nice to see her move in with Darren.

I think I read that

There's an episode coming up where

I kind of like Rae too, sometimes. I still think she's on her way out, as she said to Anita that she's going to have to live with her grandmother, but who knows. Is it me or did Darren actually look pretty good with the makeup on? I'm glad he didn't seem all that bothered.

I thought they did a much better job with the "OMG RACISTS!" angle with Des and his sister than they did when Des just started randomly telling Zak about the evils of non-whites. I'm glad they remembered Tina (I'm surprised they were able to show a photo of her -- perhaps in the UK you don't have to pay to do that).

Some behind the scenes pics of the new opening. Looks like they're including many of the adult characters like Frankie and Myra in the opening now.

It's in green screen again, so you won't get an accurate depiction of the opening from these pics.

    • Whoa. She should have fought like hell to get that. Was it the greatest show ever? No, but it had a fantastic cast and was practically guaranteed to last multiple seasons because of its star power. Could have certainly led to bigger and better things. If it had flopped she could have always gone back to soaps. Judith Light broke through on a sitcom where she was basically second banana to Tony Danza. That grew into a very busy and distinguished career. The woman is still regularly booked to this day.
    • I could understand her being frustrated by the fact that she'd been in the business 10+ years at that point, and probably couldn't even get in the door. But then again, she'd already gone out for pilot season once (that we know of) and she and  her agent knew a 35-ish woman had a very difficult time in Hollywood. I know she did a few guest spots, but other than Designing Women, nothing I saw--not even a Murder She Wrote, and that show had tons of ex-soapers on it. I mean, God bless Marilu Henner, but even having been on Taxi, she couldn't get arrested for years either.
    • I didn't rewatch that period, so I'm not really sure how much Bill is on. I recall something about him living at the boardinghouse. I think Van made Matt his guardian, and why she didn't name Josh would be a mystery to me, other than the HW decided they needed to keep Bill in Matt's sphere. Nola is also his aunt, although they don't know each other well, and Van wouldn't have trusted her anyway. There's Dinah---but she's unreliable. Billy gets out of jail around NYE.

    • That's on Kimmer. As someone posted above...she was offered roles in pilots but she would be part of an ensemble or supporting. She didn't want that so she came back to GL. I don't know what she thought would happen..someone offering her "Here's Kimmer!" or The "Zimmer Comedy Powerhouse Hour" variety show..but her housefrau fans did not have the same pull in HW as they did on the soaps. Forbes and Watros knew that you had to take small parts to get noticed ands start a career in primetime. I know she was in consideration for the wife in Evening Shade, but when you go up against Marilou Henner, the soap diva looses. I could see her frustrated in a role like that, where she has to be the understanding wife with a bit of sass, but she could have made it work, if it wasnt for her huge ego.  I think it would have been an issue haveing all the powerhouse comedy actors surrounding...(lets face it..Alice Ghostly woudl have wiped the floor with her...) but it would have been a good launching padd.
    • Oh good, so I don't have to wait too long haha. I'm glad she cares about seeing Bill graduate. I'm guessing I'm in for a bumpy ride between Bill and Matt, if he's going to be his caretaker? Who else could it be, maybe Josh?

    • Maeve makes a few sporadic appearances, but returns full-time the next spring/summer. She's back in time to see Bill and Michelle graduate, although she skulks around town and wasn't going to tell anyone she was alive. She comes back wearing this HUGE hat---which was a throwback to the old Vanesaa. lol.
    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
