Hollyoaks: Discussion Thread

A soap opera jumping to conclusions, when the whole point of the genre is that we're supposed to be lucky enough to have time to see every beat of a story unfold. An insane choice! DAYS already proved how stupid it was. However, I'm in it for the insanity of it all. My personal 100% safe choices would be Tony, Cindy, Darren, Tom, Charlie, and the, IMO, underrated could be star, Dillon. Any of the rest I could easily come to grips with. I don't know how many they're keeping, but comparing it to when EastEnders first started with the same amount of time per week (one hour), they had about 30 regulars by the end of their first year, while Hollyoaks currently has 54.

I also wonder when the showrunners knew about the decision and if the characters they've brought on/their initial plans could be affected. Abe and JJ seem like they have obvious shelf lives, and I always thought Suzanne was brought back to eventually be killed off.

By the horrible way they've handled the reveal of Ste killing Ella, with almost everyone forgiving him in record time when he should have become the pariah of the village, it's looking unfortunately clear that he'll be sticking around. I wanted a whodunit or a prison exit where he's potentially reunited with Brendan. Leah/Lucas would go live with Mike/Zoe, and James would go off searching for Romeo.

With Scott leaving, and Andre/Vicky not getting any focus in ages, I could easily see them leave with him.

They're really building up these test results for Sally, so I'm guessing she could be dying.

Other than Ste, the only person I'm actively against staying is Zain, whose actor is atrocious. Chelsee Healey is lucky she's on maternity leave, because Goldie is always at the top of my axe list and will be again the moment she returns.

I liked them to begin with, but having Lucas beat Dillon to a pulp in a fit of internalised homophobic rage, only to then self harm and bleed out in some odd homage to Romeo and Juliet, was too much.

Soaps play up the whole “love conquers all” to extremes that no longer play well in 2024. Lucas has been nothing but abusive towards Dillion, and while it’s fine to have empathy for him, Dillon shouldn’t confuse that with something more. It sends out a bad message to impressionable teens and people who don’t have the self-worth or confidence to leave abusive relationships.

"Lucas thinks he doesn't deserve Dillon." He doesn't! It's so sad that the show only sees Dillon as a plot point appendage of Lucas. Oscar Curtis can't act worth a lick, while Nathaniel Dass is gorgeous, has charisma in spades, and the camera loves him. He and Dillon both deserve so much better.

    • Terrific ideas -- but would Mike and Nancy's great-grandson bear the last name Dallas?  Yuck.  Any way we could make him a Karr?    And in a similar vein, how could Bill and Martha's granddaughter bear the name Marceau?   I love the idea of continuing the Karr, Marceau, Hillyer, and Drake legacies, but if the new characters do not use the familiar last names, the effort to connect them to the past is rather fruitless.  Just my personal observation.
    • And they gave him a whole commercial and everything! Happy to see that star keeps growing.
    • But the REAL question...   ...May Sweeps...OR SLEEPS...???

    • It's doubly a shame because one thing Long excelled at was using backstory to enhance the present story. I think that's one reason why Josh and Reva took off the way they did--the early stuff is really good. (Unfortunately, they ruined it by overusing the characters). Imagine if Roger returned to get involved with Alex, and her brother and ex, who used to be dire enemies, came together to oppose him. Instead, Mike was nowhere to be seen and Alan was written out for years. Yes, casting would have been an issue, but when you think about what they wound up with for 15 years...
    • I've never been so annoyed to be running late. lol   EVERYONE looks so pretty.   Happy to see Andre and Eva interacting, Mona being there, and happy to see Nicole play matchmaker for Dani. Fingers crossed that FOINE doctor from Nicole's last event pops up.   @kalbir Andre looking like a snack in that tux.

      Lmao!!!!
    • Also gotta feel sorry for Mona, realizing today that she’s only known Leslie for a few months; she’s going to blame herself for all of this.
    • The way this show handled Nikolas' shooting Hayden, Austin's murder, the long slow delay to getting rid of Cyrus, etc. we're likely to have it revealed in a year when Nina is 3 weeks away from leaving and has had minimal airtime.
    • Interesting. I love my Roku.  No, I don't know. Who? I mean Disney def does. I would think a number of parties have stocks.
    • Is he still spamming demands that they hire the campy chick from The Haves and Have Nots? Or whichever show it was. I don't think it's an either/or. I happen to think Dana, Dani, Eva, Nicole, Kat, etc. are all great. Certain folks aren't going to be some posters' favorites and that's fair enough. But I would argue most of those characters above (and several others) have caught on with a lot of the online audience. I've even warmed up to Martin!
