GL now has 4 Head Writers

There's been a restructuring of the writing staff at Guiding Light. In place of David Kreizman serving as sole headwriter, two headwriting "teams" have been created, the first consisting of Lucky Gold and Chris Dunn, the second consisting of Jill Lorie Hurst and David Kreizman. Donna Swajeski will be writing scripts.

Yes, I was going to say that! However, I don't think that system quite fits with American soaps, sadly.

And there's no really strong writer in that team. GL's had head-writing teams before, but Nancy Curlee was there, and GL doesn't have a Nancy Curlee these days...

We saw the disaster that was the Stephen Demores, Patrick Mulcahey, Millee Taggert, and Sheri Anderson Head Writing team back in 94-95. They're all good writers, but it just didn't work. Which is why I think Nancy was pulling all the strings in the Nancy, Stephen, James, and Lorraine team.

Don't they see the problem lies with the people they already have? Lloyd Gold, Chris Dunn, Jill Lorie Hurst, and Kreizman, they've all wreaked havoc on GL. And Swajeski, I've seen nothing from her on GL to say she's not involved. Just get rid of the writing team and the EP already!

Not to mention Swajeski is an overrated writer herself. I know it's not a popular opinion with some people, but I didn't think her AW was all that and a bag of chips in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Let's see how this works out. I'm not too thrilled with this, but if it results in stronger stories and COUPLES WE CAN ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT, maybe it will work.

LOL! I so agree! AW was one inconsistent mess for its last 15 years or so on the air. There might have been some greatness here and there, but AW severely paled in comparison to its P&G sister soaps, GL and ATWT. Swajeski's AW just doesn't compare to Curlee's GL or Marland's ATWT.

I know many look at her AW as a good time for the show, but I've never found that to really be the case from what I've seen of it.

I wish I knew if GL has intentionally and deliberately abandoned the traditional narrative approach to soap writing, or have the people running the show completely lost their way? I mean, if EW told me that the what we are seeing on screen is deliberate and that she is happy with it, my decision to stop watching or not would be much easier.

I'm not really sure I understand how this works. Two mini-head writing teams? So... what? They split the layout of the week in half between them? I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like this will over-complicate things.

What's with all the "futzing"? There's no need to re-invent the wheel here.

And who plots out the OVERALL long-term story for the show? Ellen Wheeler, the "executive director" (per Kim Zimmer)?

The short answer seems to be that Team A takes characters 1 through 10, and Team B takes characters 11-20. This ensures that the two character groups NEVER interact. I'm sorry to keep paraphrasing Kay Alden, but the show NEVER sounds like the show.

It is UNENDING DOOM, no? Is this really a competitive thing...where the best team wins?

Wasn't Lucky Gold the pre-Kreizman HW who crashed and burned??

I wish they'd just cancel the thing already. Not because I wish that historical treasure to die, but because I cannot hear a single voice in favor of preserving the current limping zombified corpse of what once was....

One HW team does one thing one day and the other team has a whole different plan for the next day? What kind of assinine way is that to run a TV show? If this was also Wheeler's idea, then she absolutely MUST be fired! Period! She's a menace not only to what little is left of GL but to the soap genre itself. Not only has she turned The Grande Dame of Daytime into a complete and utter laughingstock with her TinkerToy cameras, refrigerator box sets replete with card tables and office furniture that Staples wouldn't even sell, crappy generi-rock screeching over bad, meaningless dialogue, the obvious lack of any decent wardrobe, makeup, and hair departments, and the desperation of it's actors to flee at warp speed but now the show has instituted the complete and utter abandonment of any cohesive narrative structure whatsoever in addition to the horrific and irreparable butchery of every character, family, and relationship on the show?! It's this the freaking twilight zone! What does this incompetent loon actually have to do to get fired?! Piss on a Pringles can on-the-air?

GL doesn't really seem to have long term stories. Everything is very self-contained and primetime-y. They don't do cliffhangers or leave you wanting to tune in the next day, ever. I don't expect to see any change really. The only good thing is that if they are splitting the cast up, we may see people more evenly.

Wait...but this actually happened.

Guza and Pratt were HWs, and B&B were HWs.

Except...Guza and Pratt were doing General Hospital and B&E were doing Port Charles. Two different shows. THAT's the way I can see two different teams working.

All on one show. Four different chiefs divided into two teams? Not so much....

    • I recall @Chris B asking about this but here is an interview Sheri Anderson did with SOU back in the fall of ‘89: Here is an article that I think is interesting, it is an interview with Shery Anderson, screenwriter of the ninth season THE WRITE STUFF: FALCON CREST’S SHERI ANDERSON: FROM DAYS TO NIGHTTIME By Richard Spencer Soap Opera Update, 1989 : At a time when the success of nighttime soaps is shaky, Sheri Anderson, former headwriter for DAYS OF OUR UVES, ANOTHER WORLD, GUIDING LIGHT and GENERAL HOSPITAL, makes the jump to the evening format with some new ideas to help strenthen the CBS California vineyard based soap opera FALCON CREST. "FALCON CREST is going to have a differnet tone that it never had before," headwriter Sheri Anderson expiains. "The people that I am working with are kind of an interesting mix. The executive producer, Joel Sumow, did the first years of MIAMI VICE and THE EQUALIZER, Bob Cochran, a Harvard MBA,and Cyrus Nowrasteh, who has done a number of features, are story editors. I am co-porducer, with a history in daytime, so we are a real different mix. We all kind of balance each other out in different ways. I am sort of the emotional side (coming from daytime) and they are more the gritty side." A lack of focus is what Sheri attributes to FALCON CREST's problems the last few seasons. "No one , seemed to knwo that the characters' motivations were. Pilar was a real good example. No one seemed to know what she wanted. This season it is clear that Pilar wants Lance. That is really her dream and goal tokeep Lance. She will do anything to do that. She will be making some sacrifices thís season that really jeopardize her relationship with Lance." While Pilar's character may be strongly in place, Maggie's is not. How will the show restructure in light of Maggie's drowning? " We are not trying to replace her, but we are adding another kind of strong heroine character. That character is Laruren Daniels. She's very earthy; married to a construction worker. Lauren. is the sister of Michael Sharp, Gregory Harrison's new character. "Michael is an extremely powerful adversary to Richard Channing. He will be more cynical than Richard and less emotionally motivated. For Michael it is all power and money. The audience will be more sympathetic toward Richard. He will be going through hell," Sheri reveáis with doom in her voice, "...Paying for his past sins " The complete opposite of Richard or Michael's intensity is the the new character of Charlíe St. James."Charlie is every woman's foolish choice," Sheri character sketches. "He's kind of indescribable; charismatic, totally unpredictable, charming, unnervtng. He's coming in as a love interest for Emma. He will be the first man to make Emma feel like a woman. She's really not victimized by him...she’s addicted to him. Charlie's presence will make her a little less flakey this season." But Emma is not the only one in store for major personality changes, also in the categroy is Frank. "We arebringing back somebody from his past," Sheri reveals "there will be a great secret that will come to ight." Speaking of characters from the past, are there any Sheri would like to return? "Everyone is fond of Ana-Alicia in her original role. At this point we don't have any plans to bring her back because we have some other character that are going to take the forefront." And if one thing is going to remain the same, it will be what Sheri recognizes as the theme of FALCON CREST "Quest for control of Falcon Crest. We have people trying to take control, and they are all taking it for different reasons. Some are emotioanl, some are revenge, but they each have a different eason for which they want Falcon Crest. And that is really the pivotal center. It is very earthy." Keeping the core of lite show intact is not the only thing nighttime shows have to do to stay interesting and acording to Sheri"I din't think night time shows have kept paces with changes in the viewing audience," Sheri answers by analyzing what exactly is primetime soaps* problem. ln datyime, you do over the years the shows stay on, but you are adapting to what people are accepting:faster-paced, or slower, or addíng more comedy, depending on the audience, and what they are buying. I don't think some of these shows in primetime have done that "We are trying to make the show as much episodio as it is continuing. We are cutting down the number of scenes in each act to get the audience more involved. But some of the shows, and this happens in daytime al so, don’t let the characters really grow," Sheri certainly made chracters develop during her daytime career, but especially on DAYS OF OUR LIVES, which is the source for her favourite stories of her careen ”When Víctor carne to Salem and revealed tha the was really Bo’s father, it caused such a ripple effect for Kim, Shane, Román, Bo, Hope, Caroline and Sean. I also liked bringing Kayla back for Patch.” Having written for Kristian Alfonso' s Hope (DAYS) and now Pilar on FC, Sheri distínguishes between the two characters. "Pilar is a woman, but Hope was growing up. Hope was more innocent and Pilar is not Pilar has an intelligent strength where Hope did all the wrong things for all the right reasons." Pilar wíll be the only one retuming from her family, while Angela Channing’s appearances will be limited (per Jane Wyman's contract). "But Richard will be taking a very strong role which is very similar to Angela Angelad presence will be felt in every epísode/ Sheri informs. A lot of people complained about the women of FALCON CREST being wishy-washy They certainly aren't this season Sheri emphasizes. "Lauren will be strong, especially after her brother Michael steais Richard’s children and places them with her, Frnak’s step daughter will be very devious, indicateive of Kathleen Turner in “Body Heat” And Gregory Harrison is fabulous," Sheri reports with joy. "He is so different from his character on TRAPPER JOHN, M.D He is very similar to Michael Douglas in the film 'Wall Street'. FALCON CREST viewers will find a much richer textrae, getting away from the glamour and really going to substance and style." Sheri concludes, "it will be a show to watch, We are trying to bring in a new audience, and at the same time, respect our past audience."
    • Well, if he's had a series of mini-strokes along the way (which, IIRC, he did), then that influences things. I can say, from my experience of having had two full-blown strokes, that recovery periods were very, very different, both in terms of difficulty and length of time.
    • Whhhhhhhhhhhattttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was everybody out this weekend.
    • She did have a thing with him in the late '90s, before she inexplicably disappeared with no mention as to why, although I can't remember if they had sex.
    • I don't believe she did. She did sleep with Simon, believing he was a Spaulding.
    • -- If I ever get sick, please don't send me to Garland Memorial. That hospital is a YIKES. -- Soooo much activity around the main nurses' desk. Do they move dead people on a gurney past that desk, too? -- 8 months for Bill to recover from a "small stroke"? Uh....I don't think so. Is anyone researching this stuff? The hospital stuff is not coming off as realistic. -- It's good that Derek and Ashley are being integrated into other stories, but it's a real stretch to say Leslie was "stalking" Ashley. It makes Derek seem dumber than we already think he is. -- Ashley spends a lot of time having small talk while she's at work. -- Chelsea is embarrassing. Period. -- Tomas is supposed to pick up the slack for Bill, but he has time to have worthless conversations with Leslie? OK then. -- Kat is destroying the case against Leslie, but that's clearly the way to keep Leslie on the canvas.
    • 6-3   I almost let my system just delete the episode just like with B&B. I am now questioning if I should have. lol.   I just can't believe that Cole sat there and started to get sick and then only Victoria off and ran off and everyone basically went back to what they were doing at Nikki's birthday party. Cole was too much of a vet character for that. And now story back off-screen.   I did chuckle at how much Victor pay Kyle dust. And now Kyle with this deal and a promise to leave town if he hurts Claire. smh. As if Victor isn't going to make that happen.   It was lovely to see Ashley. And actually (misdressed and all) Abby.    And I liked Claire's dress.
    • Oh. That. I pretend that never happened.

I did think of another possibility. Did India ever sleep with Alan? They kind of toyed with pairing them up, but I'm not sure they ever became lovers.
    • While I do love the chaotic energy that is Kat vs Lesile, it is a bit extra. Sheltered, virginal Kat who plays it safe from her man to her wardrobe understands that Leslie is dangerous, but she's out here showing up everywhere and anywhere that Lesile is to be found and actively going to places where she is alone? I mean Kat doesn't even act a little afraid or intimidated by Leslie. Meanwhile, big Ole Derek out here begging for his and Ashley's life to Jacob.  As for Dani, I didn't see it that way. Dani and Bill were together for 30 years and shared a family. I believe there was real love there at one point. Bill is still an ass and Dani is still crazy, but realizing she may lose him and her daughter's may lose their dad definitely struck a chord.
    • Funny I randomly saw Kami’s lengthy post about the 44th anniversary of the Walton’s finale last week pop up in my news feed on Facebook. A few inaccuracies to her post but overall it was pretty insightful and interesting to read.
