Take this with a huge grain of salt, but I read somewhere that Claire Labine and Paul Avila Mayer really wanted Stephanie Braxton to be the next Mary Ryan (that is, after ABC had talked them out of killing her off with Mulgrew still in the role -- which had been their original plan). Braxton was slated to leave her role as Tara on AMC; however, because Agnes Nixon had heard about Labine and Mayer's plans, she allegedly reversed course and kept Braxton a little longer on her show, thereby forcing Labine and Mayer to hire someone else.

Again, though, take the rumor for what it is.

Kathleen Tolan: good playwright, lousy actress.

Yeah, I thought so, too. Either this was happening during the post-Mulgrew period of revolving Mary's, and they were looking to replace either Carney or Tolan with Braxton...or the story is a complete fabrication.

I don't recall hearing that Stephanie Braxton was wanted as a new Mary. I don't think that she would have been good in the role, unless the writers were going to change the character of Mary.

I did hear that Pamela Toll (The Doctors, Somerset) had read for the role and was wonderful. I think that the reason that she was not hired was the issue of money.

Also, Ryan's Hope wanted Frances Fisher (The Edge of Night, Guiding Light) to play Shiobhan when Marg Helgenburger left the role.

I think that Stephanie Braxton was good as Tara Martin on All My Children, but I did not care for her at all as the recast Winter Austin on The Edge of Night. Lori Cardille was, in my opinion, unreplaceable in the role of Winter.

I also did not like the character that Ms. Braxton played on The Secret Storm. I also preferred the original Laurie (Linda DeCoff) in the role. Laurie was "the other woman" who broke up the marriage of Ken and Jill. She was a neurotic concert pianist who rebelled against her father. Then, the writers changed Laurie - and I usually do not like it when that happens.

I also did not like it when the All My Children writers changed Brooke into a sympathetic character.

I could imagine Stephanie Braxton as a Janet Bergman on Search for Tomorrow.

I think it was a lost cause. Mulgrew WAS Mary. No one else could fill her shoes, and the subsequent choices proved it. I didn't care for Goulet in anything she was in. Her Meredith Reade just stunk it up on GL, and I never saw her on SfT or ATWT, but I just wasn't a fan. The others didn't work for me either, when I used to watch Soapnet. Just my opinion, though...Then again, I always thought she (Mary) should have been torn between Jack and Bob Reid, but that's just my idea as well.

I disagree with Slick. I think that the show SHOULD have tried other actresses in the role. I happened to have liked Mary Carney as Mary. She had a different personality than Ms. Mulgrew; perhaps too different to be accepted. My favorite Mary was Kathleen Tolan. I adored her in the role. I did not like Nicholette Goulet, however.

Although there are some performers in roles that I think are not replaceable, these, in my opinion, are very few. One role that I thought no one could play other than Philip Carey was Asa Buchanan on One Life to Live. Yet, one day, a replacement was needed. I thought that the replacement was excellent.

I observe the problem that Ryan's Hope had in casting replacements. Many of these were good. (John Blazo for example) Sometimes the recasts on Ryan's Hope were not cast in the correct role, in my opinion. For example, Alexandra Neil would have been a better replacement for Nancy Feldman, in my opinion, than Nana Tucker.

This just occurred to me. I cannot imangine why the role that Irving Allen Lee (Dr, Evan Cooper) played could not have been a recast Dr. Clem Moltrie.

Perhaps it wasn't the most well-played match in history, but that's something no one will remember in a few years time.
    • The thing with Martin (for me) is that he should have been Anita and Vernon's kid. I honestly think he would have been fine being an older or younger brother to Dani and Nicole. It also would have made his relationship and kids feel more realistic. A handsome salt and pepper late 40s/early 50s congressman who settled down and adopted kids to fit an image for politics. Not that he didn't want this lifestyle but it is what he needed to do to get ahead. Also, we don't often get older characters playing LGBT roles not just on daytime but across most media. It would have been a refreshing take. As an alternative, Sam and Ty could have been Martin's kids from an earlier marriage a la the NJ governor that was outed. We could have also seen parallels between Vernon and Anita thinking back to how they handled Martin coming out compared to the way they accepted Chelsea.  As for Martin being Nicole and Ted's kid, I do wish in this case he was not tied to a marriage and kids, so that he could date and sleep around like any other character on a soap.  Yeah, I didn't get it...but what I did get is that girl is a bit crazy like her mama.  Vanessa and Joey talking about the poker table...get these people off my screen.

    • Unpopular opinion, but I didn't think the show should have reunited Billy/Vanessa at all until the final stretch of the show. When watching the 1989 episodes when both Vanessa and Billy return after being off the show... I liked that Vanessa had moved on from him and that the show was hinting at her wanting to reunite with her first love Ross while looking down at Nadine for being the one Ross was dating.  And I loved the twist where Billy and Nadine teamed up to keep Vanessa/Ross apart.   This was an interesting concept that sadly the writers dropped with the show deciding to make Vanessa pine over Billy between 1990 and 1993 when they finally reunited.   To me, Vanessa pining over Billy seemed out of character. At least once Billy was carted off to prison in 1994... she and Billy divorced and stayed divorced until the final months when they finally found their way back together.  During the years when they were divorced, I liked that they had maintained a friendship and connection.. with viewers (like my late mom) wondering if they would ever decide to make it work again. I wish the show had tried that with Josh/Reva because by the time of the final episode when they rode off into the sunset, I didn't care because we'd been through the make up and break ups between them for over 10+ years by that point.
    • I break down the primetime soap era (start of Dallas to end of Knots Landing) as  Up to Spring 1982: Building the foundation. Fall 1982-Spring 1985: Peak. Fall 1985-Spring 1988: Tanking. Fall 1988 onward: Off the rails plus budget mode. Of course individual shows vary and I've broken down each show in their threads.

    • They didn't need to have some slutty gay dude as their representation. Just a 'normal' guy getting involved with another guy or two (or three). Just like the straight characters. Thinking about it, they missed the boat by not having a few other single charcters at the beginning. Maybe Naomi or Ashley could be shown meeting Derek/Jacob and  we could follow their romance. Too many characters were coupled up at the start. As a tattoo hater I was surprised to see Tomas so inked. Don't find it attractive or sexy. I'm surprised an actor would do that as it's definitely a statement and may not be appropriate for some roles. Suppose they can cover if necessary. I didn't buy Kat being all girly and then paying off Darius to get into Eva's room. Way too cliche. She should have just come along when the housekeeping was leaving and breezed in saying it was her room. And her smug looks in the hotel room and 'Now I've got you!!' talks to herself at Orphey Gene's...no.
