Nipple-gate seemed to make all the networks TERRIFIED of trying this anymore but I remember even the basically family drama Once and Again had one ass shot of Bruce's character in season 3. I also remember the soaps flirted briefly with this--which ones? I remember a shot on Y&R? And I wanna say Dusty on ATWT? Anyone remember? And the years? Brad on Y&R has showed his butt in the shower. Mike & Katie had sex in the shower and you saw Mike's ass. Bill had sex with... eden? beth? olivia? someone... and she got out of bed and pulled the sheets with her and you seen his ass. What bugs me the most about nipplegate is how no one ever actually saw JJ's nipple; it was covered with the ninja star. So it's really ninja stargate. I'm still not sure why it's okay to show a guy's nipple, but not a woman's. You can show the top of a boob, the side of a boob, the bottom of a boob, or a combination, but not the center. Ridiculous. I love it when shows like CSI show gruesome death scenes and nude corpses on the slab but go to absurd lengths to obscure any form of nudity. What kind of parent would let their kid watch someone being stabbed to death but hyperventilate over a nude scene? Anyway back to soaps. Yeah Mike Kasnoff and Bill Bauer were the big ones in 2003 I think. Rumour had it that Bill's ass shot was one of the reasons John Conboy got canned. I think Shayne Lewis had a similar scene as well. I think Dusty on ATWT did bum it after Mike & Bill, because i remember an interview with GM talking about how DC & MC gave him crap for not doing one, because all three are friends (god, i could only dream of being around all three at once...) dont forget paul's nude photo lauren took and turned into a centerfold on Y&R. It's not just nudity -- it's love scenes in general. We don't get as many swoony kissing shots and certainly bedroom sets appear to have been dismantled on many shows. I mean, we see a quick kiss -- cut -- and then we get "afterwards," and usually the couple is bundled up on the sofa? I think also there are actors in Daytime who don't like doing love or nudity scenes. they feel it devalues them as "actors." Maurice Benard and Steve Burton have been pretty vocal in that respect. I guess they feel that mumbling and shooting toy guns gets them more respect? Anyhoo. Conclusion: the death of love, sexiness, sensuality, chemistry between two actors. is the death of soaps, IMHO. As you know I was a massive Once and Again fan--I've seen every episode at least twice, most of the two seasons on DVD 3 times and I only remember ONE scene where you actually see all of his ass (trust me I'd remember) though some of the love scenes especially early on were fairly risque I remember since I watched season 1 originally with my mom... (Though as a massive O&A fan I'm embarassed to say I just called Billy, Bruce... sigh) Koos while I'm all for more nudity on tv (in Canada it's much less of an issue especially post 9pm--like in the UK) I agree with you--I never got how with the female breast you can now get away with showing ANY part of it--the top, the side, the bottom, as long as the nipple is covered. The nipple slips in--and it's nudity. It's become ridiculous. However most of these network butt shots were male right--who all showed their derriere on NYPD Blues? I do agree that the 80s sex scenes tended to push the boundaries more than even the 90s did--for whatever reason--although we never got nudity... They actually got in some trouble for this--as a young (under 10) kid I remember watching DOnahue and people complaining about kids being home alone and turning on the soaps which they called basically pornographic--now you flip on a soap and rarely see any sex. (I also remember an early 90s DOnahue where they had the cast of AMC on and the actor who played Dimitri said it was hard not to get a "woody"--his term not mine--when filming love scenes for him. My parents were kinda the opposite--VERY strict about violence and for the most part not about nudity at all (unless it was violence based). Oh well And thanks Sylph--is that the rep I have? I also remember the third season when he's been in the shower. There may have been other occasions but I definitely know those two. As a sidenote, UK TV lets the sexual nudity in after 9pm but if its just embarassment or medical related, it can fly in daytime or evening. I know that Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Family Affairs and Neighbours have all shown male butts. Mine were pretty easy on both alas.
