I don't know, Khan... you don't make THIS many changes to a cast during strike-time, and then ask the pre-strike head writer to come back and pick everything up, when it seems like a totally different show, with characters he didn't create there and other characters he built up suddenly off the show.

I could be totally wrong here...just doesn't seem to ring true to me. If all of these drastic changes are being made, something tells me this is the "New Days", even post-strike.

If/when they kill Kate, I really hope that we get a poignant scene with Sami.

At the funeral (if they even have a funeral), I would like to see a scene with Sami walking in, surprising everyone. Nobody thought she would be there, but yet there she is... paying her respects. Then, as the service is ends and everyone leaves, Sami stays behind, walks through the empty church up to the casket and makes some remark like, "You gave me a good fight, Kate. You're in a better place now though... so I'm about to say something that you would've never heard me say before. You win. Truce?"

I would probably bawl like a little baby. They definitely have to do a Kate/Sami montage, as well. That's been probably the longest, most definitive female/female rivalry that this show has ever seen, outlasting Carrie/Sami, Marlena/Kristen, Vivian/Kate etc. (what happened to the female rivalries, anyway?!) and everyone else. Anyway, following the montage, we could fade back to Sami, still standing in front of the casket as she slides a photo of Lucas and Will out of her purse and places it in Kate's hand.

God, can you imagine Salem without Kate Roberts? So vibrant, full of life and unwilling to forfeit any battle. Spending all these years trying to make her children happy and keep herself above water, just to wind up with a tragic end. It's so hard to imagine her six feet under. Everyone else on the show has already died and come back a million times, but for Kate, this would be the first (and likely only, LoL) death, so it would hit with somewhat of a different impact.

Remember the scene at John's funeral where we saw Stefano place the pawn on John's picture? I believe that's what happened. Stefano even looked pained at the "death" of John, the "death" of his adversary. If he can show pain and remorse, then Sami can surely show a little for Kate... because we all know that both Kate and Sami have gotten off all this time battling with one another.

ICAM!!!!!!!!!!

If either of them was hit by a bus tomorrow, the other would be the FIRST PERSON at their side. One of the great things about them (when they're written well, that is) is how much they RESPECT each other. Even when they want the other one dead, they could never go through with it.

I always thought that (all buried DEEPLY in their subconscious, of course) Sami saw in Kate what she would be had she stayed the bitter brat forever (which is why she hated Kate so much), and Kate (who I always believed, due to the Curtis story, had to have a bit of self-loathing in her soul) always saw her two sons falling for a woman who was JUST LIKE HER AT THAT AGE, and wanted better for them then someone like their MOTHER. And THAT'S where all of this animosity stems from.

Of course, that could just be me reading too deeply into a silly soap. I've been known to do it before. :-)

Wow, I am stunned. I think it's time to check out of DOOL. Losing Belle, played by the best young new actress in daytime, and Shawn who was played by the most breathtakingly handsome guy in daytime this side of Eric Martsolf was enough to tempt me to leave, but now they're getting rid of the best schemer in town?

What's the point in watching? Tamara Braun? She and her charisma challenged ilk made me stop watching GH for about a year,

Very depressing.

Exactly!

And I feel the same thing is happening on Y&R.

That suggests to me that Sony is using the strike and force majeur...and simply the disruption caused by the strike...to clean house and rebuild.

In the Y&R case, this is unambiguously fixing things up. I kind of got the sense on DOOL that it was fixing things up too...but now the tide of opinion seems to be changing?

I remember when it was confirmed that LeAnn Hunley was coming back this past summer and alot of people thought that the return of Anna would one of the final nails in Kate's coffin. Koslow is a talented actress and I am totally blown away by this. I hope B&B does pick her back up as Margo, and uses her on the show.

I just cannot believe all the changes going on behind the scenes, but in reading posts... I am beginning to wonder whether or not all of the shows are somewhat rebuilding during the strike. We are seeing characters hit the road on just about every show and on some fan faves being brought back. Could these be changes for the better or are they going to be detrimental to our shows.......

Good point. And that only adds to the Hogan-is-out theories, doesn't it?

If we assume DAYS and Y&R are using this opportunity to clear the decks, MarkH, then it might be safe to say Y&R's attempt to salvaging is thus far more successful, b/c they genuinely seem to have the audience's interests at heart. Many of the storylines and characters Y&R fans have complained about for a year or so either have been improved upon or simply brought to a quick end.

DAYS, OTOH, is taking steps to correct the show, but I don't believe they know what it is that their audience believes needs fixing.

I have to agree with this sentiment. I could care less if DAYS continues to air or not anymore, it's becoming pointless to invest in anything about this show. I'm away in Europe for six months here, and from the looks of it this show will barely be recognizable when I get back to the States. Sad.

    • That's what happened with Hope Williams Brady on DAYS.  Started as rich princess, went to the police academy.   Became a cop.  Now consults for the I.S.A.
    • I know Curlee/Demorest tried to give Roger a conscience in regard to raping Holly, and Zas is magnificent in those scenes with Alex. But he kinda ends up blaming Adam and the fact he (well, really the writers) ignores raping Rita and being responsible for her and Ed's child's death make it less than convincing.  I do think during 89-93 they were careful to not whitewash his past with Holly, but his occasional bouts of conscience always seemed to be overridden by his obsession/lust for her. The only purely good thing I can ever recall him doing is helping Maureen during the blackout, and even then, had she lived, he would've found a way to call that favor in. I've kinda resisted saying it, but it's kind of clear to me Long was determined to have her own version of Erica Kane, and God help us all, it ended up as Reva Shayne. Although at least Kim could act. (Sorry LaLucci fans) Honestly, I'm not even sure CBS soaps ever a character as larger than life as Reva.
    • Regardless, I'd still like to see more episodes from the 80s...there is very little of Charlotte Greer, Kirklands and Greenberg's out there sadly.
    • A black family having a white maid would be a good subversion of stereotypes. Also want to say that while the overall show has many flaws, the biggest one that's legitimately stifling is the lack of a rival family.
    • I also do not like the bits I've seen with Delia during Labine's 83 return. I am glad when she came back for the last time in 1986, she allowed Delia to move on from Frank.
    • Thanks for the well-detailed reply. I'm fairly early in my viewing, so I have some time before it goes nuts. Thanks a lot! @kalbir and @DRW50 thank you so much. I am just approaching 100 episodes, so I'm good for now.
    • The Duprees as the main family isn't the problem, but the fact is that over 3/4 of the cast are Duprees.. so it limits coupling potential and also keeps the canvas too closed in. Too many female Duprees and no hetero, nor gay, male Duprees is also a problem.   I also agree with @DemetriKanethat the male characters are one note, and not very layered/interesting... outside of Bill, that is. To me, I would have focused on either Nicole's family and dynamics or Dani's family and dynamics instead of trying to introduce/develop both families at the same time.  Nicole's family is more developed and interesting with loads of storyline possiblities then Dani's family right now. And because MVJ and co decided to feature so many Duprees... we're less likely to be free of any outside characters like Ashley/Derek since they're the non-Dupree part of the canvas.
    • BTG: A B&B: B DAYS: B+ GH: A- Y&R: C-
    • I can not see Kat as a police officer and do not want that for her. Thats not her passion nor does she care about that stuff. The stuff with Eva and Leslie is specific to her life and wanting to protect her family. Her "detective" skills have more to do with her business background, which makes her very analytical and pay close attention to details. If this show had a corporation, she'd make a shrewed businesswoman and CEO I definitely dont want to see her sleep with her cousin's husband. That would be too much of a Hayley redux which ironically you dont want with the Sharon/Hayley theory
    • I would make Jan, Ashley's mom, Anita and Vernon's maid. It would lock in to why Leslie would choose to befriend both her and Mona. It also gives Ashley a connection to the Duprees and explains how she befriended Naomi. I would have had Derek start the show as a cop to explain his connection to Jacob. Kat needs to realize that she is MADE to be a detective. Have her go through police training, making the appropriate comments about the uniform along the way. Have her prove she is so much more than a rich princess, even to herself. Then, when Jacob's partner is proven to be dirty, Kat is assigned as Jacob's rookie trainee. At the same time, Naomi does finally get a case she can follow through on. Her client is a person that Jacob arrested. This puts them at odds because Jacob knows this person did it, as does Kat, but Naomi only sees the extenuating circumstances and believes he deserves a lighter sentence and a second chance. THAT is when Jacob will turn to Kat in frustration and she will lose her virginity to him.
