Writer's Strike Thread

I am almost positive he had a hand in the infamous Troy/Lindsay sex scene in 2003.

I loved that, but it was SO wrong for daytime TV, and for OLTL.

That Troy/Lindsay sex scene was just near the start of his time back on OLTL, no? Kinda odd tho as Malone's novels are often very dark--but I do agree with you

Why am I completely unsurprised that JER, a legend in his own mind, would not strike?

Just because he's not on the list doesn't mean he's not striking.

Thanks for updating the list, Kubla Khan.

I actually thought it was perfect for OLTL B)

But it was undr Gary T that we got the earlier shocking sex scene right--the one that everyone was all up in arms about re oral sex?)

You mean there was one more "vulgar" than Nora walking in on Troy and Lindsay doggy style?

I watched a lot during that period(because I loved Gary Tomlin's EP style from BEACH...go fig...) and I don't remember seeing an oral sex scene.

I also loved that scene. It was very dark and realistic, very OLTL, very Josh Griffith IMHO - but what he does doesn't necessarily suit some other soaps, and I think that includes Y&R. I think he comes from some different kinds of soaps altogether.

I didn't actually find it vulgar tho I did find it disturbing in its seuxality--which fit the characters and story I felt. It's not liek we got nudity (didn't we get some ass shots on ATWT and Y&R briefly before nipplegate when networks were braver? Then again Once and Again ALSO had an ass shot and it's pretty much a family show)

I do agree that his tone doesn't seem right for Y&R

I don't think Jack Smith started Y&R's spiral. The man was burned out, he needed a break. The trio of Alden, Smith and Latham worked well because all of their ideas meshed. It was only after Alden assumed complete control did Y&R truly begin to fall into the shitter.

Smith consulted at ABC (mainly GH) and I'm not surprised he didn't get the show. He worked wonders during the MetroCourt story, and the subsequent time after, but it's obvious Frons didn't want him. The same way he didn't want Alden. It's sad, because both are great writers and could work wonders at the ABC shows......

Negotiations resumed today and there is this bit of speculation at TV Guide:

« WGA Strike Watch: How This Season Is Being Rewritten

Report: A Strike-ending Deal Is "Already Done"

Will the strike negotiators be home for Christmas? A "very reliable source" tells Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily blog that there appears to be a deal in place between both sides. "It's already done, basically," says the insider, crediting weeks' worth of back channel note-sharing conducted by Hollywood agents. "I was told not to expect an agreement this week," says Finke, "but my source thought it was possible that the strike could be settled before Christmas."

In other words, maybe, just maybe, TV viewers won't be handed a big lump of coal as this holiday season — at which time the fresh scripted offerings will really start to dry up — rolls around. "I don't want to raise false hope," Finke adds. "But this source has been very accurate in the past."

If Sony is smart enough to being Shaughnessy back as EP, I can't imagine him keeping any of the current writers, at least Latham additions on. He was very close with Kay Alden and Jack F. Smith, and the two of them hated Ed Scott. IF anyone can bring Alden back to Y&R, it's Shaughnessy.

As far as I'm concerned Frons gets what he deserves. To turn down writers like Alden and Smith for hacks like B&E just shows that he isn't interested in quality or talent, he's interested in total control.

I am a big proponent of the Kay Alden or Nothing movement in terms of Y&R. If Sony is so damn insistent on not having Alden back as a writer (which would be lunacy) I would implore them to think of having Alden act as a consultant or consulting producer of some sort, she 'gets' Y&R like nobody else, it takes a special writer to write Y&R, LML and her hacks have demonstrated that. Hopefully her time at B&B has been a transition period back to Y&R, she's done wonders with that show and Brad Bell knows it.

As far as EP goes...Griffith might be a fine producer, there are a lot of great unemployed daytime producers. I'm a David Shaughnessy fan, Wendy Riche would be good. Basically, someone who isn't a tyrant would be an improvement.

I agree Frons wants total control, which is why he's happy with OLTL and GH but not AMC: AMC has not successfully acquiesced to his vision while OLTL and GH have. BUT.... are we sure it wasn't JHC who wanted B&E? She did work with them at PC.

But he had that with Mctavish--I think McT's main falling out is a tendencey to bend over backwards to acoomodate other peoples' requests with a smile (ie when JFP hired her for OLTL and the writing was virtually no different than when JFP was writing the soap herself...). If she had any sort of gumption to stick to her own ideas--or contrarywise had someone liek Behr helpign control her I thionk she's a pretty good to even sometimes great writer. Anyway Obviously Frons had to fire her but I have a feeling B&E are at least as easily controlled (and ya JHC--who I really want off AMC--prob played a prt)
