The problem isn't Sheffer. You would of gotten a focus on the younger crowd with anyone due to the budget constraints. If you didn't know already the headwriters are basically told who they can write for and who they can't. Hall, Hogestyn, Alfonso and Reckell are at the high end of the pay scale while the young peopls like Melvin, Berris etc probably all cost combined what maybe one or two of them. They have realized that focus the young crowd wasn't paying off and have seemed to make steps in the right direction recently. With ABC everyone mostly blames Frons or Exec producers same with GL and even Y&R since LML is Exec Producer/Head writer. But with DAYS ppl don't necessarily look at the higher ups that have more to do with who gets used and what not. I care to believe Sheffer when he said he had little choice in the direction the last few months. Obviously we can still say Sheffer could of done a better job with what he had to work with since it was boring.

Exactly and just to add to that...I invite anyone who has a passion for writing to step into Hogan's shows. Imagine someone interfering in your work and firing people, telling you to use only certain people, and so on. That forces you to write things you don't wish to. It changes the plans you wanted to approach and you must adjust and so things you don't have a passion for. It's hard to make the best out of something if your heart isn't in it and that is what happened. Hogan's heart wasn't in January-April. That is why he didn't speak and why the writing lacked energy.

Now. I will say one thing. It is summer and it's been hot so people may be outside. That could be holding down numbers. Days may be doing this at the best and worst time of year. On one hand, they can try to bank on their annual summer ratings bump but the weather being nice and things going on could hinder that. Days saw increases through most of May and into June and has managed to hold on to about half of that. They went from a 1.9 to a 2.3 and now have a 2.1 so it's not all a failure. I will say that I think the ratings are at a wall because as good as the show is there isn't alot happening. People want action. Not everyone is like people on soap boards. They don't care about scenes and interactions and so on. They want things to happen. In May, Days had the LUMI wedding and the end of the island story. Plus, the beginning of the Dimera plot saw action with Sami being kidnapped and the attempts on her life. Now, it's alot of talk and just sneaking around. So many preemptions have hurt too and we still have some next week, although those may help but they could also hurt too.

I agree that fanbases play a big role and their nitpicking hinders soaps a great deal today. The fans that count in ratings don't think like us. I don't even think they care about writing because, if they did, Days would not be where it is.

I am hopeful that July and August will see gains. I remember last Fall when Days hit a wall after a good summer. The show gave fans lots of payoffs in September and the ratings did nothing. We all wondered why and I think we all have to realize it will take time. The ratings slowly got better around December but then we had the spiral. Days is doing better overall and demos are good. Hopefully, it continues to look up.

I am optimistic about the fall too. I think DAYS will get better in the fall. All comments from actors indicate that DAYS is slowly building up storylines that will go full speed into the fall. So Im not so worried about the rest of this year. Hogan Sheffer is doing OK for now I guess.

I read something on another board about SOD ratings being different than what is posted here. According to them, the ratings for June 4th for Y & R were 3.8 B&B 2.7 GH 2.4OLTL 2.2 AMC 2.1 ATWT 2.1 DOOL 2.0 GL 1.9 Passions 1.4.

Anyone know why there is a difference?

I'm not sure but I think it depends on what is included as there are several ways to examine the ratings. The SON ratings include the LIVE and same day ratings (which would include people who watched later that day/night on their DVR). Maybe the SOD ratings only include the LIVE ratings and exclude the DVR ratings?

Thanks Coffeebean.

The reason I said it is because there are daily numbes floating around the web that would add up to the weekly average, and they make the musical look like a minor success, but no one seems willing or able to confirm them.

    • I'm anticipating most of the cast at the Nice location for a few weeks a la the Tuscan villa for Victoria and Ashland's wedding. I don't know why they bother. I'd rather see the money going into more regular home/office sets. This party has been a bust. No secrets revealed, break ups  etc. Ugly decorations and I'm going to slam the costuming again. Just the guests heaping praise on  Nikki  like she's achieved some magnificent milestone rather than just getting a year older.

In the loving arms of his wife, Dr. Marlena Evans, John took his last breath at the end of the June 2 episode, after suffering devastating internal injuries during a lab explosion. The iconic character went out as he lived — a hero. Sensing the fans’ devastation on Monday, Marlena’s portrayer Deidre Hall posted this simple-but-powerful message to fans on Instagram: “I know. I know. Hardest day ever.”

    • Now coming into June...well...   I knew it was coming but I didn't like the start to the next round of Dani/Bill/Hayley. As the 3 A plots from the start of the show (The SilkPress storyline and Martin's Secret being the other two), it needed to be benched for a while to develop those characters and allow other characters and storylines to grow. 3 months in, Hayley is the weak link, Dani is still divisive, but not boring, and Bill has been making his mark with some plots faster than others. So last week seeing the story starting to loop back around to them with Hayley's potential pregnancy, I honestly had mixed feelings.   I get it. The SilkPress storyline is currently in aftermath/next turn mode, so it has to be moved into a C plot position. Moreso if we want to keep the very talented Miss Trish around. And I love how clever the writers are being with the storyline. They give us enough in the episodes and are still playing out beats to keep the appetite fed. I don't feel like anyone is being dumbed down to keep her around. And Trish is giving nuances in her alone scenes with NuTed. I shouldn't care for a clear psycho, but she be selling it. That said...I wish they had given us a little more of the Martin's Secret storyline in the last week of the month though I loved the game of cat and mouse Bill did on Martin and Smitty to keep the storyline alive and active after it had a nice build beginning of May and vanished for a week mid-May. And it appears like it's about to go back to the backburner as an A plot which of course leaves the A plot of Dani/Bill/Hayley.   I am probably in the minority as someone who is not anti-Dani here and even she annoyed the heck out of me last week. In character true, but I just felt like there was a way to get all of that across without it feeling like...as I've said before...one step forward, two steps back...and have it feel organic. I liked Hayley got a little bit of edge with her, but she still ain't no match for Dani. And it reminds to be seen if we should be going back to that well of a story yet.   Now about today's show...   And I thought Tracy was bad! lol. But YES. Sharon has been worth the wait. And so has Anita's story! Finally having TT in the limelight. This has been a nice slow burn for me and a nice B plot. And the actress is good. The wig is giving. And her holding what Anita's secret is over her head and threatening to tell Vernon....Ooooo...that is what I was waiting for.    And speaking of bad...I thought Eva vs Kat was a great rivalry. But I am loving the rivalry that is growing with 'Nancy Drew' and Silk Press Sheila! They both get good licks in and are so cunning with each other. And I definitely have liked that since the anniversary party, that it has been growing. Now that Kat has been proven right, she has not backed down. And neither has SilkPress. And we got a 'Ms. B@tch' moment, too? LOVE. Eva coming up with a trump card was delicious and so 90s Sami Brady. GOOD. And the coda with Jacob and the expert...YES. The Silk Press storyline has been the best paced on the show so I love that the aftermath of the anniversary party continues to be so...barring one flaw...well for me. Not enough Nicole's POV.   And I like the C plots on display. And by that, I mean Chelsea with Vernon. And it made me wonder what the writers have plan for her love life now that the throuple is over with. I was watching her and going awww.   And of course the mystery man around Martin. I am starting to wonder if he really even works at the country club given how he made a run for it. That would be a twist.    Speaking of Martin...good to see him in scenes with his father and mother.    I'm getting used to NuTed.    I felt the last episode of May was a bit of a letdown, but this was a very nice recovery.
    • Unless they cut him, I'd think he would stay. Surely, he didn't choose to return because he expected high quality. I figure he gets to work when he wants and spend a lot of time doing his own thing and being with his family.
    • The writing for Liz and Lucky is indeed terrible, but if JJ signed a one-year contract he may be gone in a couple of months anyway. Perhaps they’re just cutting their losses.
    • That would be his older sister Stacey. She was the center of a big story back in the day. Nola was out to snag medical student Kelly Nelson, who she thought would provide her with the life she craved. He was in love with a girl named Morgan. Nola plotted to get pregnant by him, but couldn't manage to get him in bed. So she seduced Floyd, who thought she was in love with him. When she knew she was pregnant, she got Kelly drunk and made sure he woke up next to her in bed. Kelly believed her when she told him he made her pregnant. They were about to elope to Las Vegas, but her mother ratted her out and Kelly abandoned her. She almost married Floyd, but jilted him at the altar. She went to work for Quint. When the baby came prematurely, Kelly saved both of them. She named the baby Kelly Louise to irk Morgan, who was now married to Kelly. When she fell in love with Quint, she had a change of heart over all the trouble she had caused, so she changed the baby's name to Anastasia Louise, shortened to Stacey. Quint was a devoted stepfather and Henry treated her like his own granddaughter.  After Quint and Nola leave SF, I believe Stacey is never seen again. Which is odd, you would think they would have brought her back with Nola and J, but they never did.
