Um, no it didn't. They chucked the entire continuity from X1 and X2, and sacrificed major character development for the sake of "oh, lets just make another action movie". You could practically feel though the whole movie the contract's expiring. Oops - there goes Rebecca Romijn. Drats - there goes Cyclops because Fox was stupid and wouldn't keep Bryan Singer and James Marsden went with him. Uh oh, Patrick Stewart got disintegrated and mind transfered into another body so we can hire another actor to play Prof X. Quick, have Wolverine kill Jean Grey instead of just giving her one of the thousands of cure needles lying on the ground, because we could have now that we decided to chuck out the true Phoenix character from the books and that Singer was developing in X2 where she was on fire flying above the lake just so we don't need to bring Famke Jansen back. And oh man - Rogue got the cure off camera, guess Anna Paquin's done too.

And lets also kill off half the mutant population that made X-Men good, and could have been used in possible sequels like: Juggernaut and Psylocke

Harry was always ment to die. It's been his destiny in every serious incarnation of his character to pick up his father's mantle of Green Goblin to prove his worth to the father that never appreciated him, go batshit crazy, come back from the brink, and sacrifice himself in the end to stop the torture that is his life.
