Is this GL opening a new one, or one just used for their 70th anniversary? I don't watch GL, so I'm not sure.

I wouldn't have minded seeing Tammy as Beth and Jonathan as Lujack...

I just watched the show a little while ago courtesy of the fabulous RVD and I must say that it sucked, sucked, sucked. It was stupid, it was juvenile, it was........

...Eh, I'm just screwing around with you guys because I'm sure that's what you all were expecting me to say. I must say I was pleased with the episode yesterday. Beth Ehlers gave a great performance as Irna. Hell, she even looked the part. Kudos. And gotta love Justin Deas as Theo Goetz. Michael O'Leary and Beth Chamberlin cracked me up. I swear, Michael O'Leary deserves his own sitcom (Maybe a remake of "The Odd Couple" co-starring Grant Aleksander ). Even Kim as Charita Bauer was good. I could have sworn in some parts that she actually had Charita's voice down pat. Overall the creative parts of the episode were well-written (GASP, did I say that?! But I must give credit when it is due) and the direction was good. Now, I'll be the first to admit that I would NEVER compare Kathy's death to that dishrag Tammy's death, but I did like the tie-in. And best of all, most, if not all the episode was historically accurate. But there were some things overlooked, including GL's various moves (From Chicago to Hollywood and finally to New York City). But for once, I'm not going to gripe. It was a good episode. Now Wheeler, Kreizman, you did good, but now you have about 48 more weeks left in the year to prove that you really know Irna's vision. I want to actually see it in the regular episode. If you don't then, well, I'll castigate both another day. Kudos!

Hands down, the best hour of daytime I've seen in eons - and GL has been better this week than it has been in recent memory - but I ditto the "do these for Inside The Light" instead - what a fun hour of tv........

And who's idea was this? Kreizman's? If so, good job Dave (also props for a great week overall!)

The opening has been used since the first few days of January, but I don't think we're sure if it's only relatively temporary as they revamp the opening because of Tammy and Jonathan leaving, or if it's more permanent.

AllMyShadows, your idea to continue the story through ITL episodes is great!

Speaking of historical stuff: here's something really cool.

Way back before message boards like these became prevalent, list groups (like on Yahoo) were popular for soap discussion. In particular, there was the RATS(rec.arts.tv.soaps) list. Google has archived the RATS list and you can search through them. You can find all kinds of neat discussion from past years.

Just go to Google.com and click on the Groups website. When you get there, click on the "Advanced Search" link.

Just search for GL. Then choose the group rec.arts.tv.soaps (for anything pre-1997), rec.arts.tv.soaps.cbs (for anything post-1997). Than choose the time span. There are TONS of daily episode updates as well. Just searcg "GL UPDATES."

What I like the most is the discussion. Even then, viewers had various nicknames for characters, including Duh-Lan.

The show was great. Can I tell you how much of a treat it was seeing Crystal Chappell as Meta Bauer White Roberts Banning (I'm positive I skipped a name in there.)? Finally it was a time that she was not being wasted for her talents. Kim Zimmer made her role as Charita Bauer more convincing as the show went on. She had her voice down pat. The black and white technique was quite convincing also.

The Save All commercials were a nice treat also.

I have to add that either Ricky Paul Goldin's or Frank Dicopoulous's character were playing Bill Bell or Ted Corday. I did want to see Agnes Nixon in this epiosde. Nicole Foster would have been nice to see in the role. I also awaited on the ATWT mention when they went to the year 1956.

How the speech tied in with current events on the show were a fantastic idea. This show outdid ATWT's 50th Anniversary celebration in every SINGLE way.

I don't know Dru I didn't get that they were trying to justify Tammy's death - just using it as a tie in showing how GL's first controversial death was handled. Kathy was not the first character GL had killed off because Mama Bauer died in 1950 from cancer, and then Meta's husband and Kathy's dad, Joe Roberts, had died. I think Kathy was just the first really popular one that had been killed. It was a historical moment in GL history and the first time that fans were so outraged over a death. The next two times would be when ATWT killed off Jeff Baker and when Edge of Night killed off Sara Lane Karr. And the next one in the history of soaps that drew a lot of attention was back at GL when they killed off Kathy's step-daughter Robin.

Back then fans stormed the studios with letters. Tammy was popular but I just wonder even though they are making the comparison if the fans will bombard them with letters. Of course the difference now is that most fans knew it was coming and there is not the shock that the early deaths caused. And now fans just don't get as outraged about death because even though it is part of real life - soap deaths really don't mean anything anymore. Because they are just 1 or 2 writing regimes from being undone.

There is a lot of backlash over Tammy's death. I've decided to stop watching the show. Others are boycotting P&G products directly.

When I found out Tammy was dying, the shock stayed with me for a few days. I thought I'd be emotional watching the episodes, but I just grew angrier. Even Tammy's death couldn't be about her. And all for what? More breast beating? The show could've deveoped other stories and opted for a happy ending. In retrospect, the ending was so rushed.

So, I've got no reason to keep on watching. I don't feel not an ounce of synpathy tht GL is being bombarded with phone calls, letters and threats of a boycott. These damn regimes do not listen to their fans. They expect the audience to enjoy whatever they trot as entertainment. I'll be impressed if Guiding Light surpasses the 72 year mark.

WORD. Sometimes it feels like TPTB are trying more to please their actors, rather than their audience.

You got all of Meta's names in there as best I remember.

I loved Crystal as her too. I know they couldn't do everything exactly as it should have been - even though they should have. They showed Crystal as being the same actress to play Meta from before the show went to TV but that was not the case. Jone Allison (I believe that was her name) played Meta the last few years it was only on the radio. Ellen Demming who played Meta the longest took over in 1953 after the show went to television. I know that is who Crystal was supposed to be, but it would have been nice them showing the change.

ETA: I checked my resource. Gloria Blondell (sister of Joan Blondell) played Meta in 1948. Dorothy Lovett from 1948 to 1949. Jone Allison from 1949 to 1952. Then Ellen Demming from 1953 to 1974.

Meta's husbands were Ted White, Joe Roberts, and Bruce Banning. She was engaged to Mark Holden but they never married.
