Is Passions being cancelled?

NBC should have fired JERk's a$$ a long time ago and got a halfway decent writer who knew how to pace stories and give at least a few fans what they want without destroying all of the characters and turning it into a rape fest.

So why didn't they fire him? Does he really have that much power?

It's in Variety that the 4th hour of Today is going ahead.

It hints about Passions possibly being cancelled but stops short of saying it will be.

It does say Passions is struggling.

So much for that young demos thing. Low ratings are low ratings. I think the whole thing about demos is PR spin. At least it's probably mostly that.

NO better, yet, [!@#$%^&*] on the fourth hour of the "Today" show. That show is going to lose its appeal because of this. Mark my words. Matt Lauer is right; "Today" may not be as fresh and special to viewers if the franchise is worn thin.

HAHAHHAHAHAHA. Dig your own graves, NBC! I may not have to pray that lifetime of rosaries for your demise, so long as you continue making ridiculous decisions such as this one.

I don't think "Today's" ratings will suffer because of this. No doubt the first two hours will be the most watched, but "Today" (and the other morning shows) are designed for people to be able to tune into the show whenever they please. A lot of people aren't up at 7 or 8am to catch the show then, but they can check out the third or fourth hours. And it sounds like they are going to introduce new content for those later hours as well, if they are going to have the "Access Hollywood" crew, for example, to contribute.

I don't see how people think this is going to lead to the demise of NBC soaps. Days is basically carrying NBC soaps. I don't think it will be affected by Passions being canceled at all considering the HUGE gap between Passions and Days in the ratings. NBC is pretty much a one soap network right now. I feel bad for the cast and crew of Passions but enough is enough. We have seen soaps canceled with better ratings.

NBC Daytime needs both DAYS and PSNS, and each carry the network equally.

DAYS gets the Viewers, 18-49, and 18-34 demos while PSNS gets the 12-17, 12-24, and 12-34 demos. IMO NBC daytime cannot survive with one soap.

As for the soaps being cancelled with better ratings. If that was the deciding factor then AMC/ATWT/OLTL/GL would all be cancelled as well, since they are getting the same ratings Another World was when it was cancelled. :)

    • Y'all could be right that it wasn't Henry Slesar.  But I think it's mighty strange that Russell Kubeck popped in as head writer with seemingly no previous writing credits or experience, then vanished into thin air once Somerset bit the dust.  And when you look at the subject matter of those last 6 months of Somerset combined with Slesar's previous tenure there under his own name --- I dunno.
    • I think there are, they just don't usually get as much of the spotlight. This has long been an issue with GH. It's a little better now than at some points in the past. Lulu at least gets called out for her mess, and Kristina, etc. although in Kristina's case she's just exhausting to watch, and the story is directionless (the biggest issue with the show).
    • It's tiimmmmmmmmmmmmmeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Aw Hell no...not Silk Press Sheila trying to suck up to Mona.   Yaayyyy!!! Nosy Nurse!!!   NICOLE!!!   Andre looking FOINE in that vest.    NOPE to NuTed in that coat. Tbf that started off that way. I do wonder if that will continue to be an issue going forward.   Same. I really would love if it kept going.
    • The ratings the last few months seemed to hover between the high 4s and mid 5s with an occasional off week when it would almost hit 6.0. Ironically the last week the show was on the air, it did hit 6.2 so it proved that people were available to watch the show.. but had fallen off due to the constant change in focus. It's possible that maybe the final writer was Henry Slesar considering the more crime slant the show took in the final months... but why work against your other show.
    • I have some catching up to do, so I'll come back with more later, but I am watching yesterday's episode... Andre/Derek/Ashely have not sat well with me since day 1, and I can't believe I'm going to say this...but if two had to go, I would pick Ashley and Andre. I cringed at Andre blowing smoke up Ashley's ass and making it seem like she couldn't possibly have done anything wrong to drive Derek away and that if he was in Derek's place, he would never walk out on Ashley because Ashley is just so flawless

Like whhhhaatttt? The girl is sitting there with a mountain of tissues crying over a basic argument that she could easily pick up the phone and end. Sean Freeman's acting choices bother me a bit...they have from the beginning which makes me dislike the character even more. I don't get Andre's obsession with an overgrown "Miss Perfect" like Ashley. Ashley reminds me of the good girl that grew up super sheltered and tried to do well at everything and wanted everything to be a certain way. She's bland. Mama is as spicy as warm milk yet Andre is all over that. Then he's always exhaling that last word and scrunching up his nose and pouting his lips in his Mr. Rogers sweaters and it just makes me mad.
    • Exactly, the jacket was choking him while he sat on the desk. He's giving early Gary Ewing.
    • Yes, that is what I was asking you!!! Do you think primetime or a movie will snap him up? I always enjoyed the live music on DAYS. In similar fashion I am open to liking the NB although sometimes it disappointed in the effort but this year has been so satisfying.
    • Seriously, are there any rootable characters on this show? Are the head writers writing the show so we can hate every one of them? I hate Lulu. The bitch should've stayed in a coma. Willow still looking dumb as hell. I can't wait for Nina's secret of sleeping with Drew to come out. I hate her too.
    • I don't believe for one minute that Henry was Russell. I watched Somerset from the time Roy Winsor then Robert J. Shaw took over and the only period that was interesting or watchable was when I believe Winifred Wolfe was head or co head and introduced Dale (Ellen affair) and someone was harming/murdering older folks. Then it was terrible. The last six months was a slight improvement over the prior six months but nowhere near Henry quality. I also don't believe P&G would have put him on a competing time slot show.  There is a Russ Kubeck born in 1952 from Connecticut but he would have likely been too young to get a head writing stint. Plus, Henry wouldn't have chosen that name as an alias. Look at his Wikipedia page for all the aliases he used.  The real Russ may have been the 1952 Russ's father and used his middle name. Also I believe Kubeck may have been a name changed from Kupecky or Kubecky.  Many changed their names during the Wars etc.
