Desperate Housewives: Discussion Thread

I agree completely. The mysteries provide some of my favorite parts on this show. I think the appeal of DH is the deft way that it combines elements of mystery, drama, and comedy. In my whole life, I've never been so interested in a tapestry of characters as I am these ladies.

Interesting. I guess these long breaks really do hurt, because the show was on a roll before the holidays. In fact, I think it was the number one program for a couple of weeks, even beating out Grey's Anatomy.

Now, suddenly the show has lost millions of viewers these past two weeks, and it's not as though there has been some sudden SHARP drop in quality.

According to Zap2it, Marcia Cross' leave of abscense is going to allow Nicolette Sheridan a lot of front burner airtime. Weird, I wonder why she couldn't get it earlier?

I thought this episode was good too. This has been a really good season and things are moving fast. The Zach thing seemed kind of weird, almost like an attempt to bring Gabby's storyline "into the mix".

Maybe the ratings were down because of 24. I was watching that actually...

DH has proven to me that old adage "be careful what you wish for" is true. I wanted Paul & Zach Young back so the show would play out the story of Zach's paternity, with Mike & Susan involved. They brought them back so Paul could pretend to befriend Mike and Zach could hit on Gabrielle? This sucks!

Just when I thought Bree was as dumb as possible, she takes the teeth and doesn't call the cops?

Even Lynette's story was off this week and I usually find hers the most realistic and interesting. I would never degrade myself by showing off any part of my body to an elderly pervert! Yuck!!!

That's what someone else said in an above post, but I just don't find it out of character for Lynette. She has always seemed a bit unbalanced to me, willing to "go the extra mile" for her husband and children, whether that be a good thing or not. I find her to be unpredictable and sometimes annoying, but ultimately surprising (such as the whole weird thing with the rat in Season 2, or paying off her son's baseball rival). This season, beginning with the hostage episode (Actually, her whole rivalry with Nora) and leading through to the stuff with Art, I have been loving Lynette. I hope her story doesn't lose momentum.

Definitely the best part of this episode was Susan, straight through from beginning to end, including scenes with Julie and Edie.

I would agree that Bree sometimes comes across as stupid, but I just choose to believe that she is desperate for love in the aftermath of Rex's death and finding out that her husband didn't really love her anymore after 18 years of marriage. She strikes me as being at the end of her rope, probably thinking it's impossible she could be married to another psycho after what she went through with George.

Steve, your posts are always so interesting. You come across as very intelligent, and I always like what you have to say even when I don't agree. I am curious as to what you think makes "Grey's Anatomy" so good. You are kind of harsh on DH sometimes, but you seem to love GA. For some reason, GA is a show that I find to be unwatchable: I think it's predictable, overrated, pointlessly sappy (I always like sap, but not what I've seen on this program), and just plain cliche-ridden. Plus, I think the female lead (Pompeo) is an atrocious actress. Even if you have to PM me, I am dying for someone to explain what they like about the show. I have watched it about six or seven times, and I can't begin to see how people think the writing is better than that of "Desperate Housewives," but I am more than willing to open my mind and see what I'm missing.

I don't mean to sound condescending, but imo the difference in writing is that Grey's Anatomy is usually character-driven and insightful and Desperate Housewives is frequently witty but not too deep.

GA is all about the characters and how they react to their medical and personal crises. One of the best aspects of this show is how the medical cases frequently are metaphorically connected to the personal dramas. The writers also take unexpected risks like having Meredith sleep with George and Derek choose to stay with his wife.

I don't think Pompeo is that bad an actress, but her character is an unlikeable whiner. That's also one of the strong points of GA for me: All of the characters have flaws just like real people.

I would like to find out why you would call GA cliche or predictable; two words which I don't think apply to this show at all.

Oh, I don't think you sound condescending. I don't agree with you in the least bit, but you don't sound condescending.

I'm going to have to check this show out again, possibly on DVD straight through. Sometimes you can get a better idea of a show when you don't just catch random episodes.

Maybe I just find the whole hospital thing to be played out, and that's why I'm not interested. I never got pulled in to this show like I did with DH, which has always had me on the edge of my seat with the exception of one or two episodes.

I do think Pompeo is a weak, monotone actress, but I love a lot of the supporting players like Sandra Oh. If so many people love the show, it's got to be better than I give it credit for.

GA is a good show, but DH is my number one. I consider it to be the best show in primetime this year (it was number 2 last year, when my favorite was ALIAS). DH keeps me on the edge of my seat more than GA. GA always brings me down. I love it, but it leaves me feeling sad a lot. I hate Meredith/Ellen. I also can't stand the characters of Derek or Burke. All the other supporting characters and actors are great.
