ARTICLE: ‘Days of our Lives’ Renewed for Two Additional Seasons at Peacock; Soap to Celebrate 60th Anniversary Season
The show performed well for the NBC app previously and there's a reason why they had online spin-offs like Beyond Salem and Last Blast. Saying that it's only because of Peacock's weak slate is silly.

I agree - it's more that I would've liked to see it scaled back to half an hour tbh - I guess having watched a lot of vintage soaps during the past few years have made me realise that it's a much better format for soaps, but I guess it's a "if it ain't broke" mentality.

Interesting that they seem to be keeping the daily / ~40 minute format. I still think DAYS (and all daytime soaps really) could benefit from cutting back.

Days: March 2023 Discussion Thread
That was because they actually filmed it in an office at Burbank. I think it'll return. Even if it's dinky, there's no way they set it up to use for a brief episode. When was the last time they bothered to build a set only to use it briefly really?

Dallas Discussion Thread
I'd assume they wanted to SORAS John Ross a bit so he could do a bit more than be a baby. Tyler Banks also hasn't "acted" since Dallas, so who knows if he even could. I think most of all, Dallas just wasn't that good at writing for female characters, period.

DAYS: brand-new character (sibling of current character)
Honestly, at times it seems like they even style Elia like Saleisha and she kind of just comes off as a recast. It's a shame because I feel DAYS really needs more people that aren't related to everyone on the canvas; this sister business just makes me wonder if they're going to write Chanel off lol

ALL: Proposed Soaps Over The Years
lol wut? I'd say FOX would be more focused on getting the 18-49 demographic to watch though. With that said - FOX would've had the issue of not having a daytime line-up and having to try and get it cleared with their stations; it certainly would've been interesting to see where they would've scheduled it. I'm also not sure it would've lasted much longer than on NBC - by early 1999 the guy who was a big champion of shows like Melrose Place, Beverly Hills 90210 and Party of Five left and was replaced by the guy who ushered in the reality era of FOX.

Destructive Couple Pairings on Soaps
DAYS: obviously Ben & Ciara since they had to prop him up constantly, making all other characters seem dumb along with making Ciara (a heritage character) seem completely dense.

Neighbours: Discussion Thread
Had completely missed that it's being revived on FreeVee - great news, not just for the show itself but for the soap opera genre itself. Hopefully it can show how a daily show can bring users to an app.

Love of Life Discussion Thread
To be fair, actors tend to like to claim that they were leaving a show that was cancelled either way, so I'd take it with a grain of salt. Apparently no one really likes being seen as being a part of a failing shows "final cast". And it's not like Tudi Wiggins moved on from doing daytime - a year later she was on All My Children.

Falcon Crest
I will give them this - Maggie's death is actually my first memory of Falcon Crest, so it was certainly memorable! And to be fair, the L'Oreal haired heroine actually went and cut her hair off, so how could she not die horribly for breaking such a simple soap rule? Don't cut your shampoo commercial hair off!

Days: February 2023 Discussion Thread
Yup. But considering he also had a guest role in CSI: Vegas makes me think someone at CBS likes him. It wouldn't surprise me if he gets cast in a pilot, depending on how far they're planning to take the Fire Country role. At a stretch I could see Tinker returning for a one-off for Victor's funeral/memorial episode, but I can't see him coming back for even a short story arc at this point. His career is taking off and he's leaving daytime behind for now. I guess they could get Freddie back though.

Days: February 2023 Discussion Thread
I'm not so sure tbh. Tinker's making head-way into prime time plus have connections due to relatives in the business (among those his grandfather being former CEO of NBC and co-founder of MTM enterprises). Days was a stepping stone for him for bigger and better things. But yeah, Chandler will be back. Maybe we'll get Freddie back again too.

Days: February 2023 Discussion Thread
Eh, I don't think the Kiriakis mansion seem that big - the living room is miniscule for a supposedly "huge" mansion. The one thing I'll give them is that the redesign of the DiMera mansion was well-done (for their budget...) in that they did make it seem bigger. Marlena and John's apartment of course should be taking up the entire floor in their apartment building at this point - they might as well just mirror the set and pretend that Eric or Brady has moved into the apartment across the hallway... Honestly, in the next election Abe should run on promising to fix The Great Salem Housing Crisis.
-
Days: February 2023 Discussion Thread
Just like the DiMera, Kiriakis and John and Marlena's apartment, Allie's apartment has been made into a TARDIS that just keeps expanding depending on the plot. Before we know it, we'll have Paulina, Abe, Sarah and Xander living in there too.

Another World Discussion Thread
I mean, it was NBC's second most watched soap (which wasn't hard, but still). I just don't think it was attractive for them to get rid of it until Passions arrived and they wanted that show post-DAYS. For whatever reason they didn't feel like giving that shot for Sunset Beach or Santa Barbara.
-
Days: February 2023 Discussion Thread
Yup, unfortunately it feels a bit like they're the same character at this point making it inefficient to have both on the canvas at the same time. It might've helped if Sami was on the canvas and more involved with Eric to differentiate them more.

Days: February 2023 Discussion Thread
Except it's kind of accurate? Yellowstone isn't at the risk of ending because ratings are bad - it's at the risk of ending because Kevin Costner is causing trouble with the shooting schedule, only wanting to do a week worths (6 days!!!) of shooting versus the 65 days that was agreed upon. So as of now they're exploring letting Costner go and bringing McConaughey in and labeling it a spin-off (but it's really just a continuation of Yellowstone). We'll see what happens. My understanding is that it's not yet cancelled but it's likely to be and it'll basically be a Roseanne -> The Conners situation. Also, effectively labeling it a spin-off rather than season 6 or whatever of Yellowstone means that they can get the rights back from Peacock and put it on Paramount+. So the spin-off solves two problems - they get the show to their own streaming service while also getting rid of the expensive diva time-waster Costner.

Days: February 2023 Discussion Thread
Considering the cast used to get called back to film filler scenes it wouldn't surprise me if that would've been done to beef it up - plus I could imagine that they did a lot of creative re-cutting of episodes in the past, so scenes from those episodes that are 40+ minutes might've been used in earlier episodes.

Back from the dead - The good, the bad, & the ugly
I always assumed they might've intended to revive Burke in some way via Jeremiah - something-something about changing the flows of time yadda-yadda, but apparently Anthony George wanted off the show hence why he didn't appear as the "undead" Jeremiah. So they just dropped it, especially as AG wasn't that popular in the role either way. Then of course they just never invested in whatever current shenanigans went on at Collinwood again after they went to 1897.

Back from the dead - The good, the bad, & the ugly
Yeah, exactly. I recently finished watching the entire run and they really didn't have any traditional "back from the dead" storylines where someone is killed off and comes back eventually. As you said, if the show had continued they might've gone there with Burke due to him being killed off screen in a plane crash, but clearly with Victoria's character gone there was no opportunity to do so (along with their obvious growing disinterest in the current day Collins's).
