Thank you for posting this, from the Cathedral's youtube channel. She's great, it's in full, and we get to just look at her. (On the CSPAN version, it mostly focused on Trump's face. This cathedral version doesn't show him at all.)- GH: January 2025 Discussion Thread

More than a dozen religious leaders spoke during the interfaith service, including those from Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu traditions. ------------ Bishop Budde is known for being very upset in 2020 after Trump staged an appearance in front of St. John’s Episcopal Church, which is near the White House, when he held up a Bible after the area had been cleared of peaceful protesters.- The Politics Thread
Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington DC. She serves as spiritual leader for 86 Episcopal congregations and ten Episcopal schools in the District of Columbia and four Maryland counties. The first woman elected to this position, she also serves as the chair of the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation, which oversees the ministries of the Washington National Cathedral and Cathedral schools. -- Reposting to add the transcript: Let me make one final plea, Mr. President. Millions have put their trust in you. And as you told the nation yesterday, you have felt the providential hand of a loving God. In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country. We're scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and Independent families. Some who fear for their lives. And the people – the people who pick our crops, and clean our office buildings who labor in poultry farms and meatpacking plants, who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals -- they may not be citizens, or have the proper documentation. But the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors. They are faithful members of our churches, and mosques, synagogues, gurdwara, and temples. I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President, on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away. And that you help those who are fleeing war zones and persecution in their own lands. To find compassion and welcome here. Our God teaches us that we are to be merciful to the stranger, for we will all once strangers in this land. May God grant us the strength and courage to honor the dignity of every human being, to speak the truth to one another in love, and walk humbly with each other and our God. For the good of all people. The good of all people in this nation and the world. Amen. ____________ Note: This was for the National Interfaith Prayer Service at the Washington DC National Cathedral, that is traditionally held on the morning after every inauguration ceremony. By tradition, Trump was forced to sit there and listen to her.- The Politics Thread

I appreciate that you thought about it, instead of just jumping in thoughtlessly. In such a manner of death, if one wishes to announce it, I feel it's best to put the crisis hotline info with it. It used to be customary for news outlets to do that, but many don't bother these days. And when such deaths happen fictionally, there used to be a PSA at the end of the show, etc. If someone is in crisis, they might not have the wherewithal to look up crisis lines, so that's why I always say to post the crisis line info with the death announcement. Just my thoughts. In addition to the hotlines I posted on the first page of this thread, here are some more. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_suicide_crisis_lines- The Politics Thread

Reminder that, as of noon on Inauguration Day, the "POTUS" twitter and the the "VP" twitter accounts get turned over to the new occupants of the offices. The old twitter accounts are kept intact but the name is archived. Trump has the POTUS account again (although he usually used his personal twitter during his prior term as president.) J.D.Vance now has the VP twitter. The old accounts are preserved by the National Archives, as follows: Joe Biden's tweets as President are preserved at https://x.com/POTUS46Archive Kamala Harris' tweets as VP are preserved at https://x.com/VP46Archive Barack Obama's tweets as President are preserved at https://x.com/POTUS44 Joe Biden's tweets as VP are preserved at https://x.com/VP44 (yes I know the naming is inconsistent, but that's where they are) Tweets from Trump's prior term as president, as I said, were usually on his personal account, but anything on the POTUS account from his prior term (January 20, 2017-January 20, 2021) is preserved at https://x.com/POTUS45 Mike Pence's tweets as VP are preserved at https://x.com/VP45- The Politics Thread

January 20, 2025 Donald Trump’s new administration confirmed on Monday on his first day in office that he will repeat his first-term move and pull the world’s second biggest emitter of planet-heating pollution out of the 2015 Paris agreement, the global treaty seeking to avoid the worst impacts of the climate crisis. The confirmation was in a White House document entitled President Trump’s America First Priorities, in a package of measures under the headline “Make America affordable and energy dominant again”. When enacted, the US will join Iran, Libya and Yemen as the only countries outside the global agreement, which Joe Biden had rejoined in 2021- GH: Classic Thread

excerpt from Trump's inaugural speech pledge to ... speed up the destruction of the planet: "the largest amount of oil and gas of any country on Earth. And we are going to use it. Let me use it. We will bring prices down, fill our strategic reserves up again right to the top, and export American energy all over the world. We will be a rich nation again, and it is that liquid gold under our feet that will help to do it with my actions. Today, we will end the Green New Deal, and we will revoke the electric vehicle mandate" Yeah yeah I know he's bragging about jobs and the economy; but the entire economy will collapse if the planet dies. And other leaders in other countries... are making similar statements about their own countries - pledging to stop protecting the planet. It's a worldwide problem of greed and arrogance, where people who want power will do/say whatever, and don't care about the future of the world. /end rant- The Politics Thread

From Deb Haaland who was Biden's Secretary of the Interior: (She is Native American, from New Mexico) https://x.com/DebHaalandNM/status/1881384932884566511 January 20, 2025 Deb Haaland @DebHaalandNM I am beyond words about the commutation of Leonard Peltier. His release from prison signifies a measure of justice that has long evaded so many Native Americans for so many decades. I am grateful that Leonard can now go home to his family. I applaud President Biden for this action and understanding what this means to Indian Country. ---------- Biden's last act was to commute the life sentence of Native American activist Leonard Peltier from prison to home confinement. (He didn't issue a pardon, though) Archived copy of the statement from Biden's whitehouse.gov site (removed from whitehouse.gov by Trump's team) https://archive.is/tErKR January 20, 2025 The President is commuting the life sentence imposed on Leonard Peltier so that he serves the remainder of his sentence in home confinement. He is now 80 years old, suffers from severe health ailments, and has spent the majority of his life (nearly half a century) in prison. This commutation will enable Mr. Peltier to spend his remaining days in home confinement but will not pardon him for his underlying crimes. Mr. Peltier is a Native American activist who is currently serving life in prison for killing two FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and escaping from federal prison. Tribal Nations, Nobel Peace laureates, former law enforcement officials (including the former U.S. Attorney whose office oversaw Mr. Peltier’s prosecution and appeal), dozens of lawmakers, and human rights organizations strongly support granting Mr. Peltier clemency, citing his advanced age, illnesses, his close ties to and leadership in the Native American community, and the substantial length of time he has already spent in prison. ### ------------------------------ History of clemency support for Leonard Peltier (via wikipedia) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_Peltier#Support_for_clemency Peltier's conviction sparked great controversy and has drawn criticism from a number of prominent figures across a wide range of disciplines. In 1999, Peltier asserted on CNN that he did not commit the murders and does not know who did. Peltier has described himself as a political prisoner.[52] Numerous public and legal appeals have been filed on his behalf; however, because of the consistent objection of the FBI, none of the resulting rulings has been made in his favor. His appeals for clemency received support from world-famous civil rights advocates, including Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Tenzin Gyatso (the 14th Dalai Lama), Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and activist Rigoberta Menchú, and Mother Teresa. International and national government entities such as the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights, the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations, the European Parliament,[53] the Belgian Parliament,[54] and the Italian Parliament[citation needed] have all passed resolutions in favor of Peltier's clemency. Moreover, several human rights groups, including the International Federation for Human Rights and Amnesty International have launched campaigns advocating for Peltier's clemency. In the United States, the Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights, the Committee of Concerned Scientists, Inc., the National Lawyers Guild, and the American Association of Jurists are all active supporters of clemency for Peltier. The police officer who arrested Peltier, Bob Newbrook, is convinced that he "was extradited illegally and that he didn't get a fair trial in the United States"[35] On June 7, 2022, the United Nations Human Rights Council's Working Group on Arbitrary Detention released a seventeen-page analysis of Peltier's detention, rendering the opinion that it contravenes "articles 2, 7, and 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and articles 2 (1), 9 and 26 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, is arbitrary and falls within categories III and V." The Working Group urged a "full and independent investigation" surrounding his detention and requested that the US government remedy his situation "without delay and bring it into conformity with the relevant international norms".[55] - The Politics Thread
