  1. There are a number of "new" clips, Lorie and Leslie and Lorie and Lucas from around 1978. A long conversation between Lorie and Vanessa before Vanessa jumps from the balcony. More from Lorie and Lance's honeymoon in 77. Lance (now Dennis Cole) giving Lorie an engagement ring. More with Lorie and Mark Henderson than was seen on the previous set of clips as well.
  2. Kimberlin wasn't on contract until around Dec 1990. So she was never going to be in the 1990 opening, not sure why she wasn't added to the 1991 credits though.
  3. Victor hated Jack for many reasons He stole a Jabot perfurme formula and sold it to Mergeron making Victor look like a thief and costing him a lot of money He tried to lure Nikki to Jabot - Victor was very possessive and already saw Jack as a cheat and a con artist Nikki cheated with Jack during the time she was pretending to still be sick. Jack convinced Nikki to bilk Victor for as much as she could and then dump Victor. Victor felt Jack was mostly to blame for all of it. He convinced Leanna to write Ruthless and even though he was not repsponsible for the chapter on Ashley, Victor still blamed him for it He hated the way Jack treated Ashley Jack married Nikki just to get Jabot back - which showed his true colours to Victor. Victor had also humiliated himself trying to win Nikki back during this time. He lost Nikki to Jack again in 1992 when she was pregnant with Jack's baby. I don't think Victor hated Jack for being rich or well off. Jack gave Victor plenty of reasons to hate him. He liked John because John was a respected man and honest business man. Also John was Ashley's father (okay Brent was, but John raised her) and I do think Ashley and John were similar in many ways. He also liked Dina. Actually Jack was the only Abbott he ever hated. He even liked (and eventually slept with) Jill.
  4. Just as a heads up Peggy O'Shea started Nov 1975. Probably around Nov 24. Though that is pretty much 1976. Ann was there from June 1974 - Nov 1975.
  5. Pretty sure the first acting nomination and win in the leading or supporting actress category for Y&R was for Beth Maitland (I believe Terry Lester was another early nominee in the male category and Tracey Bregman got a special award for ingenue or something). Pretty sure Janice was never nominated for any emmy for any of her daytime roles. Maybe she was nominated for a different award and it has been confused with a Daytime Emmy.
  6. Victor/Chris/Paul track down Amy - Matt also finds out where she is Dru confronts Nathan about his affair while Malcolm gets romantic with Keesha Brad and Jack hit the gym and argue about Nikki I'll check the SOD's I have from 1995 and other sources to see if I can find out the reason CBS/Sony decided to do Primetime ep. Not sure why they did this one ETA: So far all I can find is that CBS were happy with the response from 1994 primetime ep and decided to do it again, it also sounds like they were trying to bring in an audience that had little interest in the World Series. 48 Hours aired after Y&R and did a show on romance novels. So it does sound like CBS were setting a theme and targeting a certain demo for the night.
  7. Getting to the important question - Which was the one that had Don Diamont's butt in it? Had to be post NYPD Blue being on air. Maybe the 1995 ep?
  8. Damita Jo still went platinum in the US which is what Confessions did in 2005, 20 Y.O went Gold in the US and so did Hard Candy in 2008. I think the difference is Janet was still in her prime (even though I didn't like her music) She should have sold more. At least for those two albums and especially in the US. I think the other major difference was Les Moonves and the corporations that basically wanted to bury Janet, and that is where the racism did come in. I don't think Madonna would have suffered in that way. She was blacklisted from radio but then so were the Dixie Chics - but that was political conservatism and not race related in anyway. Janet was punished in an extreme way - she should have never been punished at all, she did nothing wrong (accident or not) I guess what I am saying is M was punished for the things she did - that doesn't negate the racism, especially towards black women that has and still does happen. My initial statements were not taking that into account. It was a fan defending M, not me trying to say because she was treated badly that racism isn't a factor for women like Janet or that M suffers in the exact same way. I am not American, but nor am I white and I know the racism of my country and what has happened to the women in my family. What they fought for and how they have been treated.
  9. Absolutely agree. I don't want to compare either - I had no intention of minimising the racism, even if that is how it came across.
  10. Not sure, never have been sure, though I don't think it matters if she did or not, I was not making any definitive statement about it. Even if she did - the punishment was not deserved. She didn't show her nipple, it was covered up, I don't get why it was ever an issue, except that conservatives were always like this. They could only punish Madonna so much for publishing a book that minors couldn't get their hands on, but they could accuse Janet of corrupting the youth of America. It was purantism Yeah I agree. I think I was more annoyed that people seem to think M was just having some great old time selling sex and being rewarded all these years and it wasn't like that at all.
  11. I am not trying to vs. I was just pointing out that M hasn't had it easy, the treatment for both has been more misogyny than racist. No women in the business has had it easy. Janet didn't deserve what she got and neither did Madonna.
  12. I don't agree with this. Even Janet trashed Madonna about being too sexual in 93/94. Madonna was ripped apart during the sex book era. In fact she was called a slut and whore and the queen of sleaze right from the start. Her biggest gripe with Janet/Whitney/Mariah was that they played it safe and they were being rewarded for being "good girls" and she was being punished for being the "slut". I think that is why there has always been friction between her and other women in the industry. In 1985 she said she reached out to Cyndi Lauper and was hurt when she wanted nothing to do with her, The Go Go's and other women in the field all turned their back on her in 84/85 and called her "a big step back for women". Whitney said she would kill her daughter if she turned out like Madonna. Janet said she was pathetic for being so overly sexual. Hell she even got ripped for showing her belly button. She was famously on the cover of the New York Post with the headline "WHAT A TRAMP" No one defended her or called the paper out for it. Prince was extremely sexual in his act and never copped what she did. Yes there is a racist component, but it is the exact opposite. I think white conservative America expected what they saw as hedonism and amoral behaviour from people of colour, as they always saw those artists as "savages" Look at Jean-Michel Basquiat- always being described as primal/savage/primitive. White conservatives were outraged that a white mid western girl was in any way similar. The big difference is Madonna published a book bound in mylar and only available to over 18's in a store and Janet had her moment (staged or not) during a family broadcast that attracts a ton of conservatives. It was never going to turn out well and it isn't the same. But Madonna too was blacklisted after she was critical of Bush and the Iraq war. Her career basically ended in the US after that. Radio wouldn't touch. When Hung Up came out and went #1 everywhere around the world except the US, Billboard realised radio wouldn't play the track - they asked a bunch of programmers why - they called her euro trash and un-American.
  13. There was a great but very short story on Sex and the City when Miranda was pregnant and intitially planned to have an abortion which was at the same time Charlotte was having issues getting pregnant. I think this story would have worked well between Julie and Maggie, but obviously more drawn out.
  14. 100% I loved Velvet Rope. Stood in line to get her to sign the album and went to the tour - she toured Australia right at the the time she was getting out of the marriage no one was aware she was ever in. I felt she was going from strength to strength creatively, but her next album was a disappointment for me. I jumped off there. You're right, it was light and fluffy and not for me.
  15. Yep late 2002 into early/mid 2003 so many decisions being made that destroyed well established Bill Bell characters. Hated it.
  16. It does seem Bell used the blue prints of some of his 70's characters for later ones. Though I never knew Brad Elliot changed his name. I think Ashley was a mix of Lorie and Leslie. There is a not so subtle scene transition when Leslie leaves town in Dec 82. She walks out the door, camera goes to Stu then pans to a rose and then dissolves to Ashley, normally when a character like Leslie leaves you go to end credits. Then we have Ash meeting Lorie at Victor and Nikki's wedding, which there was no need for and had a very symbolic passing of the torch feel to it. I'd say some of Traci's weight issues and insecurities make me think of Joann Curtis and Peggy Brooks
  17. Victor like Brad initially. Until he showed interest in Nikki Jack hated him on site Danny liked Brad. He even helped him when Brad first started at Jabot and when Brad asked Danny to stop pursuing Traci because they were to be married, Danny stepped aside (though he had no chance anyway). By the time Brad married Traci I don't think Brad and Danny had anything to do with each other. I don't even think Danny visited his former wife in the hospital when she lost Brad's baby (did he???) Once Brad inherited everything from Cassandra, we saw the real Brad. I think this is when more people in GC started hating him, because he didn't need anyone anymore, so he could be the man he always wanted to be. The man Jill saw in 1985 and Lauren in 1987. Jack was right about him to a certain extent (not completely) Brad was a player. I think he loved Traci, but I don't think he was deeply in love with her. This is why I loved Bell's writing, Brad was never just a good guy or bad guy.
  18. I think Victor saw Jill in 1985 as amusing and as a lady of leisure, a society wife and an annoyance. I am betting EB saw BD as amusing. Though I do think Victor's reaction to her is also because she is pissing him off by being so dismissive. He wants to maintain a certain respect for Mrs. John Abbott but you can tell inwardly he doesn't like her much. I think Victor was intrigued by Jill post divorce possibly because she didn't simply ask for a bunch of money to lounge about and enjoy. She scored a job and worked her butt off when she didn't have to. I have no issue with Jill having a romp with Victor. What seemed out of place was her deep feelings that led to her giddy idea that they would be married, and her heartbreak when it didn't happen. Very odd from a woman like Jill and especially when they had only being having some booty call meet ups for a few months. I do feel that was all set up to have John feel sorry for her and take her back and lead to their marriage.
  19. That was just the lull of those years. Not much of anything was happening to a whole lot of characters. Things really don't pick up again until late 97. I remember watching in 95 and 96 was a chore. I have issues with the Olivia/Nathan story but did enjoy it at the time and I sort of liked Nick/Sharon, well more Sharon, I tolerated Nick. I think MS was popular enough that she was able to withstand just scheming in her apartment and not actually doing much. Pretty sure the whole story was the tease of her being found out and her fear about losing everything. That was it. Well that's all I remember In reference to a previous conversation Unpopular Opinion - I think J. Eddie Peck and Eileen worked. He was strong and could match her easily. At the time I didn't like them together, but with fresh eyes the chemistry is there. The problem as I see it, the show never gave them the opportunity to be in love. It was immediate conflict when she came back. They needed time to chill and find their groove. The other issue is Alden wrote Cole as being far more strong and dominant with Ash then he ever was with Victoria, and made Ashley weaker towards him than she had ever been with any man. While at the same time having them in constant crises. In other words the actors worked, the writing didn't. Because Cole and Ashley were so unhappy with each other pretty much from the time Eileen came back, she seemed so distant and uncomfortable with Peck. Which was most likely an acting choice (and I'd say correct) but was the wrong writing choice for these two. It was probably why I didn't like them together at the time.
  20. I guess 1985 when Jack hired Nikki as a Jabot model (which happened around Mar 85). Not sure when they slept together, but I believe there were plenty of smooches at Jabot. It was the same time Victor rescued Ashley. Also Matt turned up about the same time and he and Nikki definitely made eyes at each other too and eventually (though not until 1986) planned to marry. In 1986 Nikki went back and forth between Jack and Matt while remaining hopeful about Victor.
  21. I agree, Eileen's Ashley was much more of a fighter and very Kristen DiMera when she returned. I loved her scenes with Jack, but they were intense. I agree that as Eileen settled in the writing for her fell apart. I always see the 1987 ranch scenes as the first end of Ashley and Victor. The official end. But just like in life one doesn't always get that it's over. Ashley and Victor marrying in 1990 was perfect as both had moved on but were thwarted in their attempts at love - with Nikki marrying Jack (and choosing to stay married) and Traci coming back for Brad. Vic/Ash were never going to work as they had both moved on by that point. But it was comfortable and familiar and filled a void left by the heartbreak of their current situation. That is why it was so impetuous and sudden. Yes totally agree, Ashley knew in 1987 that Victor was never going to shake Nikki (partly why she chose to move on with Steven) and she realised again in 1992 those two would be forever tied and again chose to move on. The divorce was the definitive end for them and should have been the end forever. That was their prologue. Having Ashley get pregnant by accident to Victor would have led to interesting complications for Nikki/Brad/Ashley/Victor and since all four were tied with history it would could have worked without throwing Diane, Nikki and Ashley under the bus for the trashier sperm caper story.
  22. I often go back to Jill Farren Phelps recent interview and wonder if her words about Sony pushing her to update the show (in other words trash it up) were the same ones given to Alden when she took over. This would also explain why Jack Smith came back and took over the show so easily and why the show became so trashy/scandal driven during his time. It would also explain Kay's push for slightly more Jerry Springer style stories. That really seemed to be the edict of most producers back then.
  23. I think Victor hanging around was another big problem. Once Victor and Ashley divorced that should have been it and during the rest of Bell's tenure it was. Even when Eileen came back, they had a mutual admiration society going on and nothing more, which is why her IVF story was so jarring (also it being out fo character). Eileen did not play Ashley as being under Victor's thumb initially, but she was slowly being written that way and I hated it. That pairing should have remained a friendship and nothing more. If they wanted Ashley to have Vic's baby, it should have been an accidental switch. With Ash and Brad, during their marriage they had plenty of drama to deal with without the need for Vic and Olivia to make matters worse.
  24. I think this says more about the men on canvas at that time, as I don't think this was as much an issue when Eileen returned. I will also say Brian Matthews and Eileen worked, just not long term. Eric and Eileen had a deeper chemistry you could build long term story around. In terms of Ashley and Victor. Bell always wrote that story from Ashley's point of view. She wore the pants from the beginning. I know people think she demured to him, but she didn't. So Brenda's Ashley being assertive should not be a surprise, totally in character. Eileen's Ashley always called the shots in that relationship in her first run (the second run I never felt Alden or Smith ever knew how to write Ashley) In terms of Brad and Ashley, what is interesting is at the time Brad inherited everything from Cassandra, Don turned from a boy into a man and so when Eileen came back that pairing worked. I think Brad and Ashley should have been end game but Alden/Smith fucked that up royally. Brad should and would have never cheated on her. I will never believe that Olivia, of all people, after eveything she went through with Nathan, would have an affair with Brad. It was trashy and uneccessary. I also will never buy that Ashley would steal Victor's sperm to have his baby. I partly agree. I think Bell spent 82 - 85 figuring Ashley out. 85 - 88 she had A story as part of the Newman/Abbott quad. 89 - 90 she was rested with Brenda's arrival. 90 - 92 she had A story again with her marriage to Victor. 93 - 95 She had A story that just wasn't very good. Blade/Michael Tylo didn't work. 96 - 99 Shari was miscast and Bell's writing wasn't great. 99 and beyond Alden and Smith and everyone else wrote Ashley mostly out of character. Not completely but she was never the same outside of Eileen's portrayal and even that wasn't quite the same (she seemed angry all the time) As above both Brenda Epperson and Eileen had great chem with Don. That should have been end game.
  25. This is part of the clips that were shared in the Y&R vault a year or so ago, ranging from 1982 - 1988. Tons of great scenes in there, check them out. Pretty sure this was the only time Brenda and Eric had a scene together.
