I wonder if they'll even go there with Adam and Amanda. If they're aging the characters down (even if only aesthetically speaking), then four adult or young adult children might be too much for Blake and Alexis, plus I would imagine they're downsizing the cast. Spoiled rotten Fallon and pissy gay Steven would be enough.

Grant Show is 55. Just let that sink in, y'all. Let. That. Sink. In. People born in 1962 are now turning fifty-damn-five. Time, slow ya roll! First thought that comes to mind for Alexis is Miriam Shor, who co-stared with GS on the short-lived 70s period piece Swingtown back in '08. I think she's on one of TVLand's things right now.

MeTV used that pic on their website in a "Do you know this old cancelled soap?" game. It took me way longer than it should have to guess Doctors because outside of Matt, Maggie, Steve, and Mona, I don't think ANY of those people were on the show just five years earlier, and Jada Rowland doesn't count. I'm still keeping up with the reruns, slowly but surely, but I know it's gonna be pretty painful to watch it transform from a pretty consistent show from 1967 to 1976ish and then change drastically. I hope Retro keeps it around long enough for us to see.

The second I found out I'll Be Your Everything was #1 the week I was born, the song has always made me feel all tingly inside. Just that good, pure, innocent early 90s love. RIP to him, and I wish peace for his family.

Yaaaaaaasssssssss!!!!!!!!!! This show is just classic sitcom, and I love it. This is something that could (and should) easily be played to death in reruns on some cable network or syndication, and I mean that in a good way.

I actually think Grant Show is perfect for the role. I hadn't given much thought towards who I'd cast for this, but if I had, he would've probably come up at some point.

Nicole was the one involved with Peter de Vilbis, no? I agree that Fallon was boring after season one. I remember being so excited to see her and experience the character when I watched the show for the first time, but once Alexis came in, there was really nothing left for Fallon to do, which wasn't really a huge loss because the cattiness between Alexis and Krystle blew the doors off of the slight Krystle/Fallon feud. Which I know everyone likes to say they love "subtle" Dynasty, but let's be real here.

Nice assessment, Carl! The show gets better with each episode, and each of the things you say you like about it become even more pronounced. Alex is indeed very generic in the beginning, but give it a few episodes, and you'll see that even he has a place beyond just being kid filler. Rita Moreno's gonna make a run for your heart in several episodes.

Are you referring to the first season only, or the entire series? The first season had a main cast of 9 - Dallas and Knots Landing both began with 8. In regards to the entire series, all of the primetime soaps had huge casts. Dynasty was the only one that made it a point to credit every regular, recurring, and major guest characters in the opening credits. The others had no problem crediting significant recurring characters at the closing or under the first act of the show. Mary Crosby literally shot JR and was never more than an "Also Starring," but on Dynasty, she would have had her own innuendo-laden spot in the opening.

I asked these same questions re: ODAAT just several months ago. They produced a damn good show, though, so I'm rolling with it, but those questions still remain. Will this group inspire the same level of "Oh well, IDK why they did it this way, but I'm glad they're doing it"? Maybe so, probably not. Y'all know I like to wait and see.

To your first point, I think it's neither here nor there. For whatever reason, it's the zeitgeist. A year ago, they were talking about bringing Coach back, of all shows, so literally nothing is out of the question. Hell, even our very own AMC and OLTL, in their online forms, could be considered part of the trend. To your second point, the misconception, to me, seems to be that this is going be either a direct remake or will be heavily influenced by the original series. The fact that it's on The CW and will be geared towards a younger audience all but confirms that this won't be the Dynasty that is beloved by nostalgia freaks and gay men, which is also why I think those particular groups (of which I proudly belong to both - notice I left out "Reagan-era" :lol:) will be disappointed no matter how this turns out unless they're also interested in current young adult dramas. My thing with remakes has always been that if the show has the same feel, then it's a go. The new ODAAT is the first remake in a looooooooong time (outside of something like the latest Pyramid revival) that has passed that test for me, and I was one of the ones who questioned its existence when it was first released. They changed the ethnicity of the three central characters, merged two of the original's characters into one (nuODAAT's Alex is definitely a combo of Barbara and original Alex), changed all but two of the characters' first names, changed the setting, etc, yet every single episode still had the feeling of the original series. That type of thing takes a lot of care, planning, and passion, so it rarely happens, and odds are it most likely won't happen here either, but it can definitely be done. And perhaps the key is completely overhauling - going more for "reimagining" than "remake."

I don't think the Shapiros ever compared the show to I, Claudius - they were hoping to adapt the story to a contemporary setting. Once this was paired with ABC and Spelling's desire to have their own Dallas, Dynasty was born. The thing is, people can down talk the show as much as they want to, but it still stands as one of the most widely viewed series in the history of television. It shouldn't be a shock that this is happening, especially considering we've already had a TV movie about the making of the series, several reunion specials, and now-outdated rumors of feature film adaptations. It was only a matter of time. I think the fundamental changes they're making are a direct reflection of their realization that they can't just ape the original series. IDK, maybe it's because I was so impressed with Netflix's One Day at a Time that I'm mildly optimistic about this.

I dropped the show last month - through no fault of its own, just because I'm always lacking time to watch stuff these days, but I binged a few episodes this evening, and I'm still in love. Just when you think it's a silly, light-weight comedy, they get you in the feels. The episode with Alex interviewing Abuelita to get info on her youth in Cuba was so beautifully done, and of course, you have the other plot with Elena's discomfort accepting an honor on the basis of her ethnicity. I just can't get over how well they integrate real issues without it feeling forced at all. The relationships between the characters are great. Schneider and Dr. Berkowitz feel like they belong now. The bond between Abuelita and Alex is sweet, and Alex has yet to be annoying or precocious. Elena's weirdness is layered, and I'm so glad the cute baseball player was legitimately interested in her and not there to play a stereotypical fckboy role. They're just hitting it out of the park in such an unassuming way.

I wish TV themes were fun again...

It's crazy how a lot of the basic conventions of message boards were already in place over 30 years ago.

I've been waiting for this show for a few months now. Never was into the Archie stuff - I think my generation just wasn't exposed to it much at all outside of Sabrina (and, to a lesser extent, Josie), but I'm always interested in teen dramas, especially the increasingly rare non-fantasy/non-scifi variety. I haven't watched a single episode yet, and the reviews aren't making me want to use my precious TV time on it just yet. But Cole Sprouse is going to end being enough to make me want to tune in, I just know it.

Richard Hatch, who originated the role of Phil Brent, has passed away. Obviously, he is best known for Battlestar Galactica, but because we are so fortunate to have so many episodes and clips from AMC's first two years (he played Phil from 1970 to 1972) available to us, I will always remember him for his portrayal of the young, naive, sensitive Phil.

Wasn't Marla Gibbs on PASSIONS for a year in a recurring role? I love that she is steadily working without pause.

Getting into October 1972, and JESUS, what a delicious, savage BITCH Mona is! I love that her revenge for Steve and Carolee keeping a secret from her was to reveal a secret Steve kept from Carolee. Steve thought he was untouchable, but he thought wrong! I'm so happy they've built the show so much to include more characters and storylines because the constant back-and-forth between Nick and Althea, while played so well by GG and EH, gets so old when it's the main thing on the screen. Putting them in this mess with John and Cathy has breathed new life into their story, though. All of the Vito/Toni/Barbara stuff is also giving a new flavor to the show. Loved Vito's Aunt Maria. I love Billy. He's that rare thing, a decent child actor on a soap. He naturally fits into the role, and you can tell he actually thought critically about his character and wasn't just there to read lines and be a set piece. I think I've read that he's going to be around for a good few years? Can't wait to see how they write the character's coming of age. As much as I've watched on and off since it hit Retro, I have to say that this is the best I've seen of the show, and I'm going to definitely keep tuning in. I still would love to have time to go back and watch more of the late 60s to get more of a taste of the show's tone/atmosphere in that period, but I'm good with just going forward from here.

She played Betsy Crawford from 1973-1977. The clips posted from the show's last year on the air have the character of Betsy, but she's played by Margo McKenna there. There is an episode from July 1975 on YouTube that heavily features her in the first half, alongside Christopher Reeve. I think the clearest version of the episode on YT is mislabeled as 1976 (but that might be the correct year - idk).
