Does anyone know under what circumstances Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans LEFT DAYS? Was it mutual, or did they each leave on their own? Did the show go the route of Kayla/Marcus after he died? I just watched the episode in which he died, and I couldn't tell from the ending whether they were hinting at something romantic between the two up ahead. Patch was on the show first, and then Kayla, right? How long were each on for?

Stephen joined Days in 1985 and left in 1990 (I don't know his reasons for it, maybe to do different things)

Mary Beth came on in 1986 and left in 1992 ( I think it was).

They went in a Kayla/Shane direction (that was just not good imo)

Stephen Nichols left Days in October 1990. He just wanted off of soaps for a while. (He came back to soaps as Skylar Gates on Santa Barbara opposite Eileen Davidson's miscast Kelly Capwell in '92 but did not last long. SB was on its last legs, anyway.)

Mary Beth Evans was actually let go in May 1992. I remember being shocked that Days let her go, and remember a quote in SOD that she thought Days would be her home forever or something like that. When SN left, Kayla was alone for a time with Marcus Hunter as friendly support. But romantically, Days went with the God-awful Shane/Kayla plot.

And it nearly ruined Kayla as she became somewhat needy and manipulative (a la almost not telling Shane that Jeannie was his daughter with Kimberly and not Cal Winters' child).

Once that ended, Days seemed to be at a loss as to what to do with Kayla, and Mary Beth was cut not long after.

The Kayla/Shane pairing was a disaster. Mary Beth Evans and Charles Shaunessy both hated it. The fans hated it. It was pure trainwreck. I know MBE was disappointed at being let go from Days in 92 but it was the best thing that could have happened to the character of Kayla.

Yup I was gonna say the same thing. Kayla was previously played by Mary Page Keller, a brunette, and was paired with Josh Taylor's Chris Kositcheck.

Was anyone watching back then? What was Kayla like? Chris "deflowered" her, right? (I've read that a few times online -- was she supposed to be a little "older" to still be a virgin? Why is the fact that he deflowered her seem to be the only salient tidbit I can find about their relationship? Why was it a big deal?)

Also, I read that Stefano poisoned Catherine Mary Stewart's Kayla (to keep her away from David Banning, whom his daughter, Renee, was in love with). I didn't know that -- I'm surprised that was never brought up when Stefano returned in '88 and S&K kinda tangled him and they took care of little Benji (who turned out to be Stefano's son...)
