Finally got to sit down to watch it and today feels more like the start of 'Season 2' than Friday! lol. I loved how it flowed. I loved how good production now looks (that Jacob/Naomi sitting at the table with the table forefront was giving old school Y&R). I loved how Shanice and SPS were giving Carly vs Liz from GH circa the Liason years in the late 90s at Kelly's. And it really felt like they were setting up what the main A stories and/focus would be. Given our talk about romance on this show, that was on full display. And I was not hating.

If I had to go with the A stories this time around, it would be...

1) ANITA'S CANCER. It is giving umbrella tale already from how Anita is coping to the rippling effect it has on the whole family. And with the family, the writers are really and truly going through everyone's POV. And I like that. From Vernon's last week to all the Nicole/Dani scenes (sidenote...I love that Nicole's secret food stash is still a thing!) to the effect on the next generation (giving Kat a sidestory, loving Chels's POV today as well), there's so much ground to explore. And now that we have some idea of these characters, it feels felt. And for the characters we don't have a handle on yet, well, it's allowing for that.

2) BILL/DANI/ANDRE. WE GOT A TRIANGLE YOU'LL!!!! lol. While I don't like how Andre is getting so insecure...because it's making me side-eye the writers who I've already leveled my opinion ages ago about how slanted they can be when it comes to Dani/Bill...it does play with what has already been established between Dani and Andre so I'll allowed it as long as neither of them act out of character to make Dani/Bill a thing. Cuz it's not needed. This has come together organically enough that the drama can come out of that. And heck, we still have Kristen Dimera...I mean Hayley waiting in the wings...

3) SHANICE/TED/SILK PRESS SHEILA. Now...WHEN IS SHANICE GOING TO BE ON CONTRACT??? Cuz her vs SPS this episode not only gave, but the story is truly getting legs. If this is going to be a building B plot, it's not coming across as a B plot at all. Good. Let Shanice get her moment in the sun.

THEM B PLOTS...

1) TOMAS'S EXIT STORYLINE. He's gotten slllighty (I said slightly) better, but every scene he has had in the last week feels like an anvil that he's the next to go. And that continued this episode with how Kat keeps poking him about all he's focused on is that job. And it keeps being treated as a B/C plot, it can stay there, too.

2) MARCEL + SILKPRESS = FIRE...??? I've already said how I thought about them before today. And they were just as good today. They need to be the scheme team of the town. It literally writes itself with these two and great acting from both cuz that wink Marcel gave Jacob...lmao. Their cat-and-mouse game is the stuff that good soap is made of.

SIDE-NOTES...

I love the cousin pow-wow even if Martin was missing.

I caught the comment that Shanice made about how it was too busy to not do the testing in the office. Hehe. Sounds like someone heard everyone's comments about the nurse hub.

I'm always here for Nicole/Dani scenes. And I liked the Ted/Andre scene. Honestly...is Shanice really making it so I like Ted? Hmmmm

The episode definitely seem couple-y. Jacob/Naomi. Kat/Tomas. Madison/Chels. Marcel/SPS. Dani/Andre of course. And they felt like couples and couple interactions, allowing to get to know them. I liked.

Just so well done.

Those contact pictures of Vernon and Anita that were on their kids and grandkids phones were hilariously serious. Just a small observation.

Kat is not wrong to be upset and scared, but ignoring her grandmother's call was selfish. That character is hard to root for at times.

The Mardi Gras scenes were wonderful. The way that this show pays homage to Black culture is admirable and very necessary in this era.

I thought based on the promos that the party scenes would be another well-meaning but somewhat cringe scene of Dupree togetherness. (Remember when Martin, Smitty and the kids all put their hands together and cried 'the Richardsons!') But they were sweet and cute, and I was so glad they gave Anita a moment alone amidst the festivities to still be solemn and afraid. They could've done a bit more with those scenes in fact. They reminded me a bit of some of the Ward family stuff MVJ did on GH.

Anita's death stare photo killed me too lol. Looked like a mugshot for Who Shot Drew Cain.

And I see this episode continues what I just said about 1-5. The show definitely has a rhythm. GOOD. And even better, this one has what I've been saying BTG should have and has had at its best...A clear A story with other stories around it. And this case, a few B stories and of course C stories.

I love the Anita/Tracy scenes. We all know I'm bias for a soap character named Tracy. So it was good to get more of her and her getting Anita to face some hard truths. And it goes without saying that TT was superb.

And I thought it watching 1-5, but seeing them together is kinda confirming it. With Jon Lindstrom now in the credits which might mean he will be around for a while, Joey's character seems to now be pivoting. Before it was him and Vanessa that had a game of cat-and-mouse going on. Now it's clearly Marcel and Silk Press Sheila. And now seeing Joey and Marcel in scenes together, it was Marcel being more of the heavy while Joey is now concerned about 'his enemies?' to Vanessa. And I take it foreshadowing about Doug's death means that it will FINALLY come back into play. As the most solid of B stories last year, it's good to see the Joey/Vanessa story will continue to be so.

And as for the C stories...

All I can say about the Vernon/Martin politic talk is...how can they keep having these talks and it NOT circle back around to them and Kenny? It was feeling anvil-y though I love Vernon still talking about his feelings for Anita.

OOOOOOOHHH? I was not expecting a clear sign of a potential growing rift between Ty and Jessica. But the scenes were very well done in establishing more of a POV for Jessica which I liked. And of course, Ty would take offense at that.

As much as I like they are slow-burning Eva/Izaiah...it might be time for something else with them.

Kenny's murder is a hand grenade the show is holding onto. Sooner or later it has to come out.

I completely agree. Given how good IMO the show has been at foreshadowing, I'm hoping these scenes are here for just that reason.

I posted this on the BTG October discussion thread:

"I stepped away from BTG temporarily. But I had planned to return to BTG eventually. But then, meanwhile, my own life (real life) has become very very busy the past month, with no end in sight. I was following BTG recaps and spoilers for a while but now I can't even keep up with that. However, I am enjoying reading this thread daily and still read all the posts."

In that October post, I said I would be "busy in a good way", but I ended up being busy with something not-so-good.
I wasn't going to post this, but it's clearly relevant to BTG right now:
The update for myself personally: A family member had disclosed to me that they have an inherited genetic mutation that is a marker for cancer.
*** Not BRCA but a DIFFERENT cancer gene thing ***
This is something my mother died from many years ago.

I had procrastinated getting tested. (so yes I understand Kat on BTG). But I did get tested. This involved long distance appointments to specialists at a research hospital in another city.
*** IMPORTANT: A few genetics clinics will allow you to do a test by postal mail, if you live far from a decent clinic. (This depends on what the test is, what the genetic marker is, and what the clinic is).
I chose to go to the research facility in person because why not seek the best care?

The result is that I did test positive for the mutations.
The mutations I have affect more than one body part.
Then I had ultrasounds and biopsies for each relevant body part as a precaution.
(I don't have cancer yet, thankfully).

My next step is contacting family members.
My original family member has one mutation, but I have TWO mutations, so I have to contact everyone my family member already contacted, and tell them to get tested for BOTH.

Thankfully, although I am elderly, I am still in good health and chances are I will remain healthy. But still this process is emotionally exhausting.

Because of all this, I hadn't had time to watch soaps for the past few months. Ironically, I had decided to tune into BTG over the holidays to unwind; but then I read spoilers and recaps and ... here I see art parallel to my life. And it's all gone from Paramount Plus anyhow. I might try to find copies of the recent episodes later on, when I'm emotionally ready to watch it.

Please get tested for whatever.
A) you can save your own life.
B) you can save the lives of any children/grandchildren you might have.
C) you should get tested as young as possible, don't wait.

Also. One of my mutations doesn't affect me, but if I had children with a spouse who coincidentally had the same mutation, then our children would get it. But this is only relevant to a specific gene, so this might be rare.
(I don't have that situation personally, but it's good for anyone to know that you might want to have the other biological parent of your children get tested.)

End of PSA.

Edit to add:

  • I'm not going to apologize for making a long post about this. If it saves one life, it's worth it that I posted.

  • I commend BTG for addressing these issues.

I don't want to further derail this thread with discussion about my personal life, so please don't reply. Just get tested if you need to.

Back to discussion of the show!

HUGS

Months ago, I complained/suggested something in a past BTG thread and I am seeing traces of it onscreen. I won't mention what it is 🤭🤐but I am somewhat interested in seeing where it eventually lands.

Hehe. You saying this reminds me of how a certain hack was spying on a once good soap about a certain soap character who came back after an old young love, now older came back together...as you suggested for a while. Hopefully this turns out better than that. :)

If Tomas was a social climbing sl*t and owned it, he'd be more endearing.

Well...it might be coming. I don't think it's a coincidence they keep pointing out his ambition and social climber-ness.

As a Joey fan, I'm so glad that he was added to the opening credits because the show needs characters that don't worship the ground that the Duprees walk on (and yes, I felt that way about the Capwells on Santa Barbara.. which I still think heavily influenced this show).

Derek being downgraded makes sense even though he was a sweetheart, but the show heavily invested in Ashley. As a friend of mine told me, Ashley is connected to the canvas due to her job as nurse, her friendship with Naomi is focused on, her mother provides background/details over her past, and other places also share the theory that Joey might be her father. I still that could be a possibility only because of the brief scene where Vanessa introduced Jan and Joey and the facial expressions that both Jan and Joey had hinted that they weren't comfortable with one another (and also could be viewed as both trying to be there for Vanessa after Doug's death). With Guza gone, might be out of the window and perhaps the backstory of who Ashley's father is might have changed... but Joey did mention his ex recently in a conversation.

And how do you feel about the slow pivot in Joey's character. He might be praising the Duprees soon enough. :P

I remember that Jan/Joey look as well.

Just finished Wednesday's show, where Beautiful Nicole dropped by with the mini-quiches and big plans for Samantha's cotillion debut.

I loved Tyrell's tirade about cotillion culture being a way to further separate the "haves" from the "have-nots", juxtaposed with Nicole's explanation of how the debutante society (as well as fraternities and sororities) raise money to help the very "have-nots" that Tyrell feels are being discriminated against by cotillions, fraternities, & sororities.

That conversation was NOT typical soap opera fare, and it was certainly something to think about.
