ABC pulls “Jimmy Kimmel Live” from air indefinitely following host's Charlie Kirk comments

Sinclair will not be airing Kimmel on its stations as of now. Actually I have never watched Kimmel ever. I have no opinion of him whatsoever. I stopped watching late night a long time ago.

I do not support government censoring speech at any level. I also never thought I would see a President of the United States talk about private individuals (ie Rosie O'Donnell), actors, TV hosts, etc in public. Presidents used to focus on domestic and foreign affairs and not on tv hosts, ratings Hollywood and comedians, etc. We live in a new world which I do not really like.

I have seen Kimmel on the Oscars - he did well. But for his show never watched it. And I wont now. Never watched Jimmy Fallon or Colbert either. So assuming I do not "like Jimmy" - is just an assumption and very inaccurate.

I watched Carson, Leno and Letterman on NBC. That's it. And yes they all got involved in politics. Times were less extreme then. The internet and social media changed the world including TV.

As a Disney shareholder, I wish they would focus on movies and theme parks. Either fix ABC or sell it. Kimmel is a very small part of ABC and he does not affect overall ABC revenues and profits.

Yes it is my opinion on what late night  is. Honestly, I do not watch the news and broadcast TV anymore. More into cable TV, streaming and DVDs and books. I do not miss it.

I recently gave up the Young and the Restless because I just got bored with it. The Gates was good but I dropped that.

Good luck to Jimmy. I suspect this is round 1 in the fight with the government and Sinclair/Nextstar and the FCC.

End of my comments on this subject. Going back to my DVDs The Twilight Zone (original), Murder, She Wrote, the Golden Girls and Night Gallery.

I hope free speech wins.

I mean, overall the issue with late night isn't "political speech" or not, it's that the financial model just currently isn't working in the current landscape. No matter what happens to Kimmel, the future of late night wouldn't be great even if they went super inoffensive and talked about cuddly kittens (though I guess cuddly kittens might bring in some streaming numbers, so maybe not). But overall, linear ratings are likely to keep going down and they're not making up the difference in digital. This is why The Talk got cancelled and replaced by something as old fashioned like a soap.

Either way, Kimmel, Colbert et al shows will likely be the last of their kind. I'm guessing that whatever happens in the future, I think that the time of hugely paid late night show hosts will die with them. I suspect they'll pivot toward a more podcast-but-filmed format to try and get their digital numbers up, while also cutting costs.

It's either that or just give up the time slot to affiliates.

That seems most likely. Probably Sinclair propaganda. Within our lifetimes all of network TV may just be propaganda from affiliates, sports, "reality," and repeats from streamers.

Sinclair refusing to have its stations air Kimmel, despite ABC putting him back on the air.

This just in from Sinclair: "Beginning Tuesday night Sinclair will be preempting 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming. Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show's potential return."

Well, there it is. Sinclair is digging in for a fight, so please help push back -- find stations in your area, watch their local news to see what ads they run, then write those advertisers to tell them you're boycotting as long as they're on a Sinclair station. List here: sbgi.net/tv-stations/

Update. now Nexstar refuses to allow its stations to air Kimmel tonight.

https://bsky.app/profile/brianstelter.bsky.social/post/3lzj6l5psmc2x

Update: Nexstar is preempting Kimmel tonight. The station owner says it wants "assurance that all parties are committed to fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue in the markets we serve."

Did Johnny Carson do that? No. He got 9 to 10 million viewers a night. Kimmel gets at best 1.5 million.

Like the song says, "but that was another place and another time."  Johnny Carson (and Jack Paar and Steve Allen before him) pulled down big numbers for NBC, because the TV landscape back then was so much smaller than what it is today - just the "Big Three" and local, independent stations that did the bare minimum in order to keep their licenses current.  If Carson were on today, he'd pull about the same numbers as Jimmy Kimmel or Stephen Colbert, and it wouldn't be a reflection on the political content either.

But, you know, even Carson saw the writing on the wall when he retired, and that was due to cable TV and the rise of FOX affiliates that were airing "The Arsenio Hall Show" as the younger, "urban" alternative to his show.  (The thought of Carson potentially being forced to show grunge and hip-hop acts on "The Tonight Show" in order to keep up still leaves the mind reeling, lol).

"obsessed" ?  No.  Just commenting on the horrendous current events created by Tr*mp and crew.

There is nothing obsessive about commenting on that chaos.

Exactly. Jimmy continues to point out the horrible and the absurd as an assertive measure to keep from normalizing what is not normal about Trump and his administration and their Project 2025 efforts to completely unravel this country.

And once upon a time, the top 10 primetime shows were pulling in 25 million viewers for every new show each week. "That was then; this is now," to quote Bill Bell.

And in return, Late Night responded as such. To confront it is better than to ignore it and give us knock-knock jokes instead. Do I like hearing about Trump every night? Absolutely not and I look forward to the day we never utter his repulsive name. Until then, he's up for debate...

And yet, after Kimmel was taken off the air, Disney faced protest from the creative community. On Monday, 400 celebrities — including people like Martin Short and Tom Hanks, who have created memorable characters for Disney in the recent past — signed a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union decrying the blow the maneuver delivered to free speech in America. First Amendment advocates from both sides of the political aisle have decried the situation in recent days.

The decision to bring Kimmel back was approved by Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, and Dana Walden, co-chair of Disney Entertainment, according to a person familiar with the matter. The executives acted based on what was best for the company, this person said, and not on external factors. Indeed, it remains unclear if all ABC affiliates will air Kimmel’s program. Spokespersons for Nexstar and Sinclair could not be reached for immediate comment.

Another factor is Disney lost over a BILLION dollars in one day after they cancelled his show. and factor in all the cancellations of HULU/Disney PLUS yep they got hit where it hurts

Hulu ended up giving me six months for $3 lol. That's how down bad they are right now from this blowback.
