Can’t believe we’re not getting Sami at all for John’s passing. That’s wild to me. We couldn’t even get a Sami video call? I know Sami was needed for the rape story, but I’d prefer her here for John’s death over the rape stuff. She still never even explained why or how she fell in love with her rapist when she was in Salem.

So Bo doesn’t know his daughter married a serial killer.

You could really feel Paul’s grief today.

Bo finding out about Victor and that wave of grief hitting him was so real. And then to find out about Doug right after. PR was great. This is already a better Bo/Hope story than whatever the hell RC wrote.

I say it every day it seems but Deidre again is pitch perfect.

Hope being so excited to hear about John only to hear he didn’t make it

Bo is going to be destroyed.

It's really strange. DAYS did such a great job getting back characters/actors from the past that it's odd there's no Alison Sweeney. I have no evidence of anything, but I'm going to put this on Sweeney. Maybe she had to make another pie in some Hallmark Mystery movie.

Christopher Sean was so good. That was some real and beautiful acting.

Then there's Chandler Massey, who continues to either smirk through scenes or stand around acting like a dope. WTF is going on with him?

Overall, the cast continues to do stellar work. It doesn't get much better than this. If this were the end of DAYS' run, it would be a fitting legacy,

Despite most of John’s family not being in this episode, I like that the ripple effects of his death are still being felt across Salem.

Welcome back, Jack and Jennifer!

I really enjoyed their scenes with Julie. Little family moments like that on soaps are always a good thing. And I agree, Julie. As great as it is to see everybody, I wish it was for a better occasion too.

I’m glad that we finally got Tate’s POV regarding John, though his scene with Cat did seem a little random. But I love that Holly rushed to the apartment to comfort him after she found out about John. Despite everything and despite the chemistry that they have with other characters, I like the two of them together. Btw, is Cat looking so closely at the pictures of John and Sami going to mean something in the future? Her date with Chad seemed a little unnecessary though.

I also do like the idea of Ari and Holly being friends, mostly because of the mess that it could lead to with Doug III. Tying that mess together with Tate, Sophia, the baby and the guy stalking Doug III could all be pretty good. And yeah, we really should’ve seen Ari talking to Will about John. Hopefully, they have scenes together coming up. And also, Doug III still needs someone much better to confide in about his problems

Speaking of that someone, we’re really lucky that Ron was sent packing before John’s death was written because y’all know that if Ron was writing it, Leo would’ve been front and center in all of this, and comforting his “bestie” Marlena

His scenes with Jack were unnecessary too. Honestly, Jack should be beating the holy hell out of him for what he did to Gwen.

And, I’m really interested in the mystery of who Gabi heard EJ arguing with the night he was shot. I don’t think it was Johnny.

I was incredibly moved by these scenes, especially Peter's performance. It felt so tender and real, especially when you remember Bo just got out of a years-long coma and wasn't going to be able to put up a front. You're reminded of how long these legends have populated the show when you have a 70 year old man grieving men who were almost 90 or 100, but Bo's response to Victor's death was a poignant reminder of how fresh these wounds are no matter your age. Normally these types of moments don't even make it in soap episodes in recent decades as they are seen as too boring.

The more somber moments being balanced by Bo meeting his grandchildren was also lovely.

And the scene where Bo forgave Shawn may be the only time I've been in lock with Brandon Beemer's take on the part.

There's a certain element of suffocation with soaps, as shown here, when you remember so many of the kids are named after long dead relatives, or when they grew up, were paired with the kids of other longtime characters. That aspect always makes me yearn for new blood (new blood that doesn't suck, anyway), but there are other moments, like those with Bo, which make me appreciate all the history the show has.

A Day Off from the Drama Felt Like a Breath of Fresh Air

Honestly, I didn’t mind the change of pace today. The episode had a lighter tone, and it was refreshing, like coming up for air after all the intensity lately.  But, did anyone else notice that Bo's hospital room is larger than Marlena's living room?

Chad and Leo: A Surprisingly Enjoyable Pairing
I actually enjoy Leo in scenes with Chad. It's a shame Chad hasn't been given more lighthearted material before, he’s much funnier than I expected. At least we were spared the referenced Ari/Leo interaction (dodged that bullet).

Gabi’s Hair: A Curl Too Far
Let’s talk about Gabi’s hair. Those curtain curly-q bangs? Ridiculous. Not only unattractive but completely impractical. And if she doesn’t like living with Leo, then… move out. Yes, it’s Rafe’s house, but she’s the CEO and titular head of GabiChic. If Chanel and Johnny can afford rent, I’m sure Gabi could swing Li Shin’s old place (
they've probably painted since Gabi found him dead, and Melinda was held hostage there).

Rafe and the FBI: Why Though?
I still don’t understand the narrative function of Rafe suddenly working for the FBI—unless it’s to explain why he’s perpetually off-screen.
Side note: Has anyone told Elon’s team that the Bureau is hiring middle-aged men who talk to stuffed animals and are apparently set to retire with full pensions in less than a decade?

Doug3 and the Mystery of the Necklace
Now, Doug3 is suddenly concerned about the age of consent? Not touching that.
Also—whatever happened to his friendship with Sofia?
And how did he manage to find a loan shark when he only hangs out with high school girls?  How much could he have borrowed?  He changed his name and moved out of town, so he must owe enough for the loan shark to hire repo men to find him and photograph underage women.
But the real head-scratcher: why is he asking Leo who bought the necklace? It’s Melinda. He knows it’s Melinda. Was this filmed out of order? Or did she fence it? I’m confused.

Gwen Mention #1
(And we all know what happens when you say her name three times…)

Cat: The Kookiness Has Worn Thin
I’ve tried. Really. But I don’t like Cat.
I don’t like her secret.
I don’t like that she’s never at work covering Marlena’s phones.
I don’t like her brand of kooky.
I don’t like that she stopped blow-drying her hair.
Honestly, I never invested much in her character because I figured she’d be gone by now.
But now? I just don’t like her.

This is where the timeline gets a little muddy.

The Bo who was in Heaven, in Beyond Salem 2 knows that Caroline died. But in this alternate timeline, where Bo never actually died and was held in cryogenics by Megan, he shouldn’t know about Caroline.

It does seem like the new writers don’t have much interest in her, or in the possible pairing with Chad.

    • Chelsea was doing the absolute most today! Why was she introducing her sister to a woman she doesnt know? That whole scene was embarrassing. Madison needs to stay away from her bc she is too immature
    • Gosh, what a waste with Lunacy. Why have her live with $B, reveal Finn, pardon her, etc What makes this story incredibly hollow is that what Luna is asking isn't unreasonable - to spend time with her cousin father. She's not asking to move in with them. How hard with it be for Finn to throw her a bone by, say, I'll meet you for lunch/coffee once at week at the hospital cafeteria. Lunacy isn't going to hurt Finn. In fact, all her crimes were related to finding her father and it turns out to be someone she's loved her entire life. Instead of course-correcting the nonsense of last summer, Brad somehow found a way to make this worse! That's a skill... Of all the younger actors B&B has cast during the past 5 years, LY has shown the most growth and range. Why get rid of her?
    • On the subject of sets (seems more interesting to discuss than the actual show)  Some sets we don't see anymore Lauren/Michael apartment (haven't seen that in years) Victoria's house (are Marian/Tessa living there?) Apartment above Crimson Lights (I think Chelsea was the last resident) Penthouse (Lily's home) Chancellor Estate (Devon/Abby) Chancellor office (once Dark Horse) Nick's house GCAC room (used as residence/hotel room for several characters) Some of these may pop up again. The tack house, for example, was not seen for many months before being used again. Have I missed anything?
    • Thanks for searching through everything. Worked on them so long, just too lazy to check for those links myself, so I am glad you chose to do it! I guess I never did type out anything for 1973-1977 in regards to the preemptions, but they are on the charts at least (and this far back, they don't seem to do any of those "breakouts" anymore, so things are simpler in the 1970's, so eventually I could type those out).
    • I dump on the Y&R sets problem all the time, but BOLD is no better -- and they're not even introducing new sets. All of their sets are years old, and very few look like they're inhabited by people with money. Is that going to change with this move? I'd rather they save the money spent on another remote, which is no better than an HGTV travelogue, and get some new/better sets.
    • The donut posts here make up for a Friday show that was barely meh. Aside from seeing Anna, I really didn't care much about anything else. While I understand the thought behind breaking up all the sadness with "other scenes," I'd rather they moved right to John's funeral. Instead of hearing a stupid story about John changing some minor character's tire 20 years ago, just move on to the crying. I also thought the Chad and Cat scenes were a waste. I realize not everyone is devastated by John's death to the point of not functioning, but going sky diving is a choice. By the way, Jack and Jennifer are giving me nothing on this return. Please leave asap. DAYS did such a great job with John's death, so ending the week this way was a letdown.
    • Add Dr. Montgomery to list of fine women on this show! I hope the show goes forward with Madison/Chelsea and then once they're developed, bring back Allison, who is now divorced or a widow, for a Madison/Chelsea/Allison triangle.  It would definitely be the hottest triangle in daytime.
    • I wonder if Linda Bloodworth-Thomason had Kim in mind for any of her other characters/series. If they intended Allison Sugarbaker (Julia Duffy's character) to be more in line with who Suzanne was/Delta Burke's portrayal-persona, then I think Kim would have aced that. Yes, it would have been odd, Kim having previously played a different character (from a different family), but Designing Women wouldn't have been the first show with that issue. Or maybe Kim could have played Beth Broderick's role on Hearts Afire. Or Patricia Heaton's role on Women of the House.
    • Sony is probably waiting until Y&R’s lease is up as well. All of TV City is going to be gutted, so they have to relocate at some point.
