Volver. If you love lots of female characters, and loooove plot-based narratives with lots of insane twists and turns, then this is for you. Penelope Cruz is great, but I think it is her chest that carries the movie.

Notes on a Scandal. Judi Dench and Cate Blanchette were amazing and the Phillip Glass score was pitch-perfect. I recommend it to anyone interested in a little British class snobbery, family drama and intrigue.

Dying to see Volver. I've loved Almodovar since Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown .

Andf I wholeheatedly agree about Notes . But don't see it alone. You'll need to talk about it afterward; if you can after being so drained.

Shivers, a 70s zombie movie with a twist. Picture Night of the Living Dead meets Alien meets Debbie Does Dallas and that's basically what it's about. It was weird and creepy. Gotta love Canadian filmakers!

The Departed, pretty good. I haven't seen any of the other Best Pic nominees so I couldn't say whether it deserved it or not.

I watched The Illusionist and The Prestige this weekend. Both recommended movies. The Illusionist was pure enjoyment and left a happy feeling. The Prestige was much more conflicted, contorted, a tad dark. It left me wondering what happened so I will want to watch it again to tie up pieces, hopefully. Beautifully acted movie.

Children of Men: Spectacular, amazing and fantastic. Should've gotten more Oscar nods than the miserable 2 it had.

Black Snake Moan. This movie was fire. It was such a bizarre movie, yet touching. So very good. Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci acted the hell out of it. Justin Timberlake was also really good.

Just watched The Illusionist. Not as good as The Prestige, which I loved, but okay. I liked the positive ending.

Off topic, but, Mateo, I love your Quentin Collins banner! He should have been the star of Dark Shadows instead of Barnabas. My absolute favorite werewolf ever! And so underappreciated.

A few nights ago I watched a Barbara Streisand movie called "What's Up Doc" on an old VHS tape. It was so freaking funny I thought I'd pee myself. Madeline Kahn is in it too and she's a laugh riot. it was such a farce from minute one... I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. My aunt said "Oh you guys will like it, nothing like Yentl or The Way We Were"

Damn right we loved it. And a very cute, young, Ryan O'Neill is in it too. One of the best chase sequences I've ever seen.

The Life of Others

The Oscar winner for 'Foreign Language Film' - and it so deserves it. The movie was fantastic; thrilling, moving, brilliantly acted, wonderfully old-fashioned. Check it out if you get the chance...
