It's interesting to read that Barbra rarely performs this live because she doesn't believe in the lyrics. I can't blame her, as the lyrics are absolute nonsense, but still it's a beautifully structured song, and very different from a lot of what was being put out in 1980. It's a few years ahead of its time. And she sings it expertly. I can see why it was a big hit.

I'm obsessed with Julian Ovenden, Carl. His version of Being Alive was my favourite part of the BBC Sondheim birthday special a few years ago. Flawless.

I'll have to check that out. I was looking at a few of his clips because I heard a bit of him in a clip of the UK Sound of Music. Maria can be sung emotionlessly sometimes but he really acts and sings it superbly.
