I disagree to a point. I think Bridget could have grown into the role..she was young but she was taking care of a kid and really two businesses, and she had a warmth and toughness for the role. I think Bridget always wanted what Mo provided and what her grandmother had done, a stable family life amid turmoil.
Nola had her years out in the world, and she didnt really want to leave Springfield originally. I would have her be angry at Quint for the years that she had to live in tents away from the safety net of her family. They could have written it that they were on a dig in a remote hell hole when Mo died and Nola didn't find out until they came back to civilization. So it's really Nola that had an affair out of anger, and Quint being Quint would tell Henry and Van that he was the one who did it to save Nola embarrassment. She would be a writer and she finally gets a book deal (I would make it a meta tell all "Boardinghouse Blues" on SF as Nola of course the heroine...Morgan would be the bad girl, her prince's sister woudl be a royal bitch as Van was then and a certain woman had the habit of screwing everyman in one family and jumps in fountains.) and comes to SF to promote it. She actually like having a home base and family around her, so she stays and becomes a Mrs. Madrigal (well, without the surprise) to the young people coming in and out. I think Bridgets practical and harder edge outlook would contrast with Nola's still starry eyed outlook of telling people to run for their dreams.
