Ok I must be having a brain fart. What did VM do to irk FV. She was on the show for like maybe a month in 2013. it was always a guest stint.

On Joss : FV wants her to be Starr Manning. Issue is that Starr actually had personality and this is nothing about Eden its how they write Joss.

The only thing I remember is Vanessa being quoted as having met with him back then before her guest stint for the 50th.  She was very complimentary of him.  She did express the Michael thing being kind of childish for a grown woman, more of a dig at RC’s writing than FV.

Much like Jonathan Jackson, I don’t know what the actual issue is on his end.  These are natural returns that should have happened.  Same with Lulu actually

I love Vanessa, and Brenda.  But I don’t see a place for her for more than a short term return.  Robin, Jason, Jax and the Q’s she interacted with are gone.  Sonny is in a relationship.  Maybe they finally go forward with her and Dante?

The only thing I remember hearing is that she was a diva on set around the 50th anniversary.  Something about not wanting to dress up for the cast photo and she isn't in formal attire, but the dress she was wearing to talk to Sonny in when you look at the official photos.  Idk, I think she is super protective of the character of Brenda to the point she might be annoying and won't work for peanuts, but I don't think it's anything ridiculous.  We've never heard anything bad from VM or FV officially.  They have always spoke complimentary of one another.

As far as Brenda long term, they would have to pivot her character.  Put her at Deception, have her interact with Brooklyn, Lucy, Maxie, Sasha, Laura, etc.  I don't think it would be a mistake to have her be friendly with Carly or Ava and have her and Carly take on Nina.  I would not go with her and Dante because that's weird, but she is cornered into the Sonny relationship as I can't really see her with anyone else on canvas, so of course she'd be Roger Howarth's main love interest immediately

Vanessa, Mo, and Lilly Melgar are all hispanic and Dex is like the whitest person in the world lol

Probably not, but he could at least have brunette or have black hair if they were going in that direction.  The kid that played Dev literally looked like a Sonny/Brenda child and I thought maybe Brenda lost Alec again, but they didn't go there with him.  He felt vaguely the right age and situation.  I don't know how old the actor that plays Dex is, but he feels old to be Brenda's kid.

ETA he is only 25, so I guess he could be her son lol

Dex is too old to be Alec Barrett. Let's not do this again like the embarrassment with people trying to make Oscar happen. The obvious way to bring Alec on is find a talented young LGBT teen to play the role, not try to awkwardly kludge existing randos into somehow being able to be the progeny of THEE Brenda Barrett.

I would never buy that with Carly, lol. I just can't see Brenda breaking bread with Carly, or with the woman who seduced Sonny after framing A.J. and getting him killed (Brenda had a friendly relationship with A.J. to the end). Brenda is an island unto herself with a lot of the current cast, but that's okay because so many of the longterm vet characters adore her and she has such a legendary image/background as an in-universe celebrity that she generates stories.

I would have Brenda involved with Deception and Lucy to a degree (Nina would probably go insane again and leave or die), but I would make it part of something much bigger or just blow the company up again to something even higher-tier than it currently is. Brenda is not meant to be running Crimson, for example; Brenda is the cover story at Crimson. The current Deception, etc. workplace is too small for Brenda's public stature. Sasha and Maxie would cease to exist, Sasha permanently and Maxie for a good few years.

Idk, it probably makes no sense, but I have always sorta liked the idea of Carly/Brenda taking on a common enemy together and unwittingly becoming friends.  They do have a lot in common.  I would also take an Ava/Brenda friendship, but I don't see that happening either.

Brenda is an island on her own but only if you make her that way.  She doesn't necessarily have a history with Anna, but you could just slot her in because she's Robin's bff.  She has Ned, Lucy, Laura, Kevin, Sam, Dante, Michael, Kristina, Molly, etc. etc  She might not have been super close with all these people, but it wouldn't be difficult to establish those relationships.  Deception probably is too small for Brenda's public stature, but she has a close bond with it because it gave her the modeling start.  I would scale back on Brenda being "the most famous supermodel ever" because that doesn't even jive with Brenda character really.  Not every man or woman wants her or wants to be her.  She was pretty much just adored by Sonny/Jax not the entire world.  I think Guza went too far into his adoration with Vanessa and made Brenda too famous for the logistics of an actual soap.

The whole Brenda may have slept with Michael thing was odd and out of left field considering she knew him as a child.

That is true, most of the characters for Brenda to play off of are gone. Jason, AJ, Robin, Jax. She would have to go against Nina and maybe have some interactions with Sam or Drew, IDK.

Leslie Charleson needs to make an appearence assuming she's well and so does Tony Geary. Now that COVID is over I wonder if they'll allow Steve Burton to return. That would be a perfect opportunity for him to be paired with Brenda now that Britt is gone.

It would have made more sense to say Jason is missing than presumed dead--yet again.

I think she can establish new relationships, sure. But I also think she has enough as is to root her. I don't think you can scale Brenda's stature back at this point though, nor do I want to - there are very few soap characters that become that kind of public-facing figure in their universes and are able to last long-term but I do think Brenda can choose to do different things while re-settling in PC and then most of her bigger public life can be offscreen. And I don't think Brenda losing it all or being humbled is that interesting or fun. Like Victor on Y&R or Erica on AMC, much of her global affairs can be filtered through the lens of what happens on GH and in Port Charles and that is manageable enough, JMO.

The Quartermaines adore Brenda, Ned adores Brenda, Lucy adores Brenda and the footprint of Brenda is still massive across the town and in the mob circle. That is enough to make her relevant.

There is no situation where you would not take Brenda back.  If you are on third characters for RW and Easton you can make Brenda work.  I just have never been fond of Brenda is everything to everyone.  She's hella awesome, but I prefer her more humbled.  Idk, I liked a more scrappy Brenda always trying to be the most, but not quite getting there, thwarted by silly decisions.

I get that. I think you can have her run into some PR trouble which helps knock her down for a bit and bring her back to town, but I would never totally strip it all from Brenda. I think some characters are just meant to be the icon.

Yes.  There really isn't a situation where Vanessa Marcil in the 90's wouldn't be the most successful model because she is so beautiful, but I think scrappy underdog works for Brenda/Vanessa moreso than icon.  And it works for her and Sonny.  Sonny Corinthos isn't going to be bagging the most famous supermodel of all time because of...all the things Sonny is.  And they don't necessarily lean in to the fact she was so young and it was a fairly abusive situation.   I love it but the red flags are there EVERYWHERE.  He was an absolute dick to Brenda all the time.  She's a chemistry magnet, but a little limited as far as acting.  I have never found her to take a role where it wasn't a variation on Brenda.

    • To me, that made no difference. The point stands whether Eva wants to be a Dupree or not. Anita was 110% on top of things. Also it's a logical inference that Eva might be interested in having a place in her supposedly real family. Frankly though I wonder if Eva knows how to feel ... yet. She could really be confused.

    • Concluding 1976... Raymond Schafer arrives in Springfield and begins an extensive probe into Malcolm’s death, puzzling Ed, who wonders why most of Schafer’s question sessions keep turning back to Rita’s involvement with Malcolm. Ed assures the man that Rita’s only connection with Malcolm was as his nurse; he is unaware that Schafer knows a great deal more about Rita than he does. Just to protect Rita, Ed has Mike check on Schafer’s credentials, and learns that he’s a  well-respected criminal attorney. The waitress at the restaurant where Malcolm suffered his stroke tells Schafer that the woman who was with him reacted very professionally to the sudden emergency, as if she were a nurse. Realizing that her little sister has fallen hard for Tim, Rita warns him that she’s very vulnerable and innocent, but Tim tells Rita her advice isn’t necessary. But Tim then receives a plum job offer to be chief neurological resident at a prestigious Philadelphia hospital and can’t pass up the opportunity. Evie is crushed by the news and spends the next several days at home crying. Joe Werner, fully recovered, has accepted a post as a medical aide in a destitute village in India and leaves alone, with Sarah to follow him later. Justin asks Sarah to consider a partnership with him in private practice, but she explains that she thrives on the hospital atmosphere. When a call comes from India that Joe has had another massive attack, Sarah leaves on the next available flight and arrives only moments before he dies. The painful news is relayed back to Cedars at once. Sara returns from India a heartbroken woman, but the day-to-day involvement of raising T.J. and of her career seem to be her salvation. Justin shows a surprisingly compassionate and understanding side to Sara, but, ironically, Justin’s ex-wife, Jackie, arrives in Springfield with her diabetic father, who is suffering from a heart attack. In the process of consulting with Justin on her father’s condition, Jackie comes face to face with Sara for the first time since their college days. Evie’s heartbreak at Tim’s departure turns to fury and hatred when she inadvertently discovers a letter which Tim wrote to Rita just after he left. In it he concedes that Rita was right about Evie’s vulnerability where he was concerned but reminds Rita that he badly hurt her in the same way she feared Evie would suffer. Evie is now sure that Rita somehow forced Tim to leave town and is livid at the idea that Tim was Rita’s lover. She insists she’s cutting off her relationship with Rita and will pay her back for any help she’s received in the past. Ben and Hope’s wedding plans are off, as Ben, while still insisting he’s innocent, won’t explain why the robbery evidence points to him. Hope feels his unwillingness to tell her the truth makes marriage to him impossible, but confides to Ann that she is miserable without him. Ben has echoed these sentiments to Mike but won’t confide in him, either as Hope’s father or as an attorney.   Holly is trying very hard to build a life without Ed, but since she sees him virtually every day at work, she’s unable to put him out of her mind. She accepts a date with a member of the hospital administration staff but is unable to avoid making comparisons between Ed and this young man and winds up alone, sadly holding Ed’s picture and recalling how much she loves him. Believing that the hospital board’s conclusions on Grainger’s death have settled the question once and for all, Rita has regained her self-confidence, and her romance with Ed is growing daily. They admit their love for each other, and Ed confides that he intentionally  held back with Rita for fear of making another mistake. Rita then tells Ed she has never married because for her marriage must be forever. Rita’s mother realizes that Rita is truly in love when she confides in her that she doesn’t understand why she’s been so lucky in having him love her and how she wants to be the very best person she can be for him. Ed proposes marriage to Rita and gives her time to think about it before answering. Rita painfully realizes that her past could, if it rose again against her, make a life with Ed a lost dream. But Raymond Shaefer has been quietly but efficiently carrying on his investigation and has learned that Grainger argued with Rita at her apartment. He presents the evidence he’s compiled to District Attorney Eric Van Gelder, who decides the case warrants further investigation. Rita goes to Ed’s office to tell him she loves him but can’t marry him, that she doesn’t deserve him and “can’t do it to him.” As she turns from a confused Ed to leave, she finds the district attorney and a police officer outside Ed’s door, waiting to arrest her. Ed, insisting that a serious mistake has been made, calls Mike to help her as Rita, shocked and humiliated, is taken under arrest through the hallways of the hospital in which she works. Mike manages Rita’s release on bail only after she has had to submit to the degrading booking procedure. Mike sees her alone at her apartment, explaining he can help her only if she tells him the whole truth. Rita equivocates until Mike mentions Texas, indicating to Rita that he knows at least some of the story. Van Gelder has, in fact, let Mike see the bulk of evidence in the case against Rita, to convince him her arrest wasn’t a capricious whim. Rita explains to Mike that Malcolm believed she intentionally vilified him to his father, to do him out of his rightful inheritance, and then wanted his father dead to collect her money. Mike expresses his appreciation of Rita’s honesty, promising to help her. But Rita’s tormented dreams confirm that she hasn’t yet told all the truth, and after Peggy visits, expressing firm support, Rita tells Roger she has to reveal his part in the story. Roger painfully tells Rita about his being Christina’s father to show her that if Ed knew, it would end Rita’s chances with him forever. Rita, who was ready to tell Ed the whole story, now realizes how risky that would be. Adding to Rita’s pain is her forced leave of absence from the hospital until she’s cleared and the embarrassment of seeing her name in the headlines.

    • Yes, but the stories are all pretty awful Seeing Victor rehashing his hatred of the Abbotts  when he married one of them and has a daughter that is half Abbott as well as walking around with Traci's daughter's heart keeping him alive makes him look worse than he already is. And I remember he and Jack chatting amicably in the past few years. Victor interfering in Kyle/Claire is just repeat of Billy/Victoria. Sharon, Nick,Phyllis etc are around but again the stories are lacking.
    • I think Kevin's 1996 Emmy was fair enough. He barely appeared for his second. I don't think anyone else on the list is that deserving but I might have gone with Moore as he did try with the whole Keesha AIDS story. @alwaysAMC Thanks to slick jones' cast list I was able to see that Nikki Rene played Tina. Not much on her, as you mentioned. Tap and a few Broadway listings (it doesn't help that a younger actress with a similar name is in a lot of roles). • Thank you. That does ring a bell. I remember Theresa and Julian's drunk, giggly fake wedding (with Julian asking "Whassup?" to the minister). Was Bruce tricking the pair as a prank, or did somebody put him up to it? I especially liked Katherine recalling how dashing young Alistair was when he'd pick up Rachel for dates, and how she wished she could be her sister, then feeling guilty once Rachel had her boating accident ...
    • And Kevin Mambo beat Shemar Moore for those two Emmys. I chalk up the wins to the voters not wanting Jonathan Jackson to eventually end up with a five peat (he won 1995, 1998, 1999). These were the 1996 and 1997 Younger Actor races. 1996: Nathan Fillion, Jonathan Jackson, Kevin Mambo (winner), Shemar Moore, Joshua Morrow 1997: Steve Burton, Jonathan Jackson, Kevin Mambo (winner), Shemar Moore, Joshua Morrow
