Does anyone else agree with me that Richard Burgi just isn’t very good as Ashland? Everyone’s gone out of their way to praise him, but I think he’s just mediocre in the role. I won’t miss him.

Hes a great looking guy, but he’s brought nothing special to the role.

I blame the show, which seems allergic to drama. I've seen Burgi play some crazy shít on cable and especially film, he's got a pretty funky range. But soaps don't have the creativity or energy these days for either nuance or wild swings. You've got talented folks playing largely staid ciphers.

Well some people go on recurring because the show doesn't plan on using them enough for their guarantee to make sense financially but some people go on recurring of their own volition because it gives them (and the show) some flexibility to do other things/take other jobs/live far away/be allowed to walk away anytime.
I have been preaching a more flexible system for years now - give enough leeway on the leash of actors to keep them happy while giving writers flexibility not to force themselves to write for characters just because they have a guarantee.
When actors have to choose between the safety of a soap contract and their gut desire to be creative and take on other projects, many will take the risk of leaving for the sake of the latter. Keeping them one foot in would keep some actors we otherwise lost.

But how do you plan long-term when you don't know an actor's availability? I see why they sign these actors to such stringent contracts but then of course they do the dumb thing and overuse them with dull story (case in point the actors who played Kyle and Summer, I truly believe both would have stayed if the story wasn't so awful).

Ok, thanks, I didn't remember that.  I was thinking she'd been recurring ever since she reappeared.  (My suspicion is that CLB is recurring also, but they're continuing to list him with the contract cast out of "kindness".  Doug Davidson revealed -- in one of his little rants -- that he'd been dropped to recurring long before they removed him from the contract cast list.)

Me either. That story had life to it and Tracey played it for all it was worth.  JG got unnerved by highly vocal stans of the Lauren & Michael coupling and backed away from letting the story unfold and resolve the way it should have. When it ran hot, it was a very entertaining story though.

    • Hahaha!!! Not Naomi being sure Chelesa ain't filming this time!!!   At last! Kat is proven right!!!   And hey, Nicole's Doctor friend, hey!!!   So far...this is giving.
    • Leslie having the nerve to show up at the Dupree House was pure insanity. Bill being revealed to be more ruthless than anyone would have thought was a good development. I have to imagine that will change Dani's view of wanting him back. The whole reveal was well done and Trisha Mann-Grant owned those scenes. That was most definitely material for an Emmy submission reel.
    • I agree, all the Guys Tux were nice. I like how they differ from each other and all stylish in a way. Awe, same. Can not believe I actually have enjoying a current daytime soap. Rewatching these episodes over the weekend as a jump back into Ryan's Hope and Santa Barbara. Agreed! Exciting times.

And it was pretty dope we didn't know that tidbit before the reveal.
    • yes I thought of the Renee party... But this is different because I'm talking specifically about the revealer convincing someone else to throw the party.  And the someone else complies, having no idea what the revealer plans. I'm wondering if Michele Val Jean did a first with BTG in 2025. But the BTG thread is already so busy -- that I thought it important to *NOT* clog it up with discussing this, so I brought the question here instead. That way, if other reveals come up in conversation, it's not a problem on this "general retro soap" thread.
    • Well, good that they showed Vanessa though I wish she was there.   Lol. And here comes Naomi. AND an explanation from Jacob.

She is diabolical! Remember in this scene she offered Martin a brownie which seemed so random? In this episode its revealed that when he was a kid, Ted used to bring him to a restaurant where the waitress would give him brownies....that waitress was Leslie. She was playing games and trying to jog his childhood memory
    • Yay!!!!!! And made it ON TIME, TOO!!!   And this is giving DAYS reveals circa late 90s already.
    • Bish what? I was not expecting that, I was for sure expecting him to go after Nicole (He still can). Looks like Leslie put her out! I love these new developments, Eva Dorian Lording her way into Fairmont Crest. My good sis better trap that doctor.
    • It should be in its synopsis on the DVR description of the show.
