On GH, Meg Baldwin was killed off. I wonder if the Hursleys went on strike. The Dobsons took over around that time : maybe after the strike. I hope we will find the missing issues. If I was better with computers, I would create a site to post all of them in a chronological way.

I remember watching on live TV back then when Meg died.  It was very emotional and I was young, and it affected me, and I had to take a break from the show so I wouldn't fall apart.  I was too young to know how to put that in words, I just knew it was too upsetting for me to watch.

Oh yeah I meant more that I doubt much of Lesley's back story was brought out during those months. Could have been, but possibly not.

Not sure with the Hursley's and if they were in the union and went on strike. I was always under the impression Irna was the only prominent HW at the time who was still writing during the strike.

I remember Bridget saying her mother got cancer around the time Bridget had first planned to leave GH (I think for GL) and Doris' health was the reason she stayed and possibly why she took over as HW. I am pretty sure it happened around this time, maybe the strike delayed Bridget from moving over and then Doris got diagnosed shortly after. I have never been able to find a firm end date for the Hursley's and start for the Dobson's. Post strike of 1973 had a fair few writer shuffles happening though.

I really want to see everything from any show from 1968 - 1983. Such a great period for soaps as a whole.

I think it was the September 1973 summary where they had Lesley and Augusta discussing their mutual past (Augusta had been having an affair with Lesley's husband Bruce at the time Lesley and Bruce's child died; Bruce killed himself) so I think it is likely that a bit more was revealed during those months. However later writers focused more on the affair with Gordon Gray and the resulting child from that (Laura, obviously) and Lesley's past with Bruce seems to have been pretty much forgotten (perhaps because it was a strike storyline?).

Against both Joe and Paul Martin's advice, Ruth Martin met with Ray Gardner to tell him that she arranged to cash in an insurance policy to raise the entire $10,000 demanded as the price for signing papers clearing the way for the Martins to adopt the boy he had abandoned in a State Park years before. When Gardner learned she hadn't got the money with her, he told her that the delay had upped the ante and he wanted $15,000. In a fury, Ruth told him that she would not give him one penny; that she and Joe would spend any amount to see that he never threatened Tad again. - After Gardner terrorized Tad and little Philip in the Martin home while Kate was ill, Nick Davis learned that his employee "Ray Green" was Gardner, and fired him. - After Ruth left, Paul Martin reported that Gardner had skipped from his motel room and though Joe believed that Gardner had realized that he pushed the Martins too far with his last demand, Kate did not believe that they had seen the last of him. Ruth told Tad that his father had apparently left town and she hoped someday she and Joe could legally adopt him, with or without Gardner's permission.

David Thornton had learned that Gardner spent a night at the cabin and refused to believe Edna when she told him how it came about. When he threatened to use the information to get custody of Dottie, Edna told him that if he tried to use her kindness to a stranger against her, she would counter with testimony about his trip to the Caribbean with Christina Karras, which could easily be documented. David had to back down again.

Jeff Martin had told Chris that he was in love with her and David's high-handed attitude over Chris' attending a party given by Tara with Jeff began to get to her. David made plans to have dinner with Chris but Edna refused to buy his story of late surgery and he admitted he intended to be with Chris. Edna threatened to leave with Dottie if he did not come home on time after hospital hours. She told him she had saved some money from her job and was financially able to make good her threat. When David told Chris and canceled their plans, Christina insisted that Edna was bluffing and begged him not to give in, saying she was tired of being "understanding." David insisted he couldn't take the chance and left. Chris called Jeff and asked him to take her to dinner, admitting when she saw him that she was beginning to have doubts about any future with David.

Nancy Grant had told Christina that she was pregnant with her ex-husband Frank's child and that Carl Blair had asked her to marry him but she had turned him down. - Carl then knew about the child Nancy was carrying, and left saying that his offer stood indefinitely. - Chris told Nancy she was a very lucky woman to be loved in that way and Nancy agreed, saying she might have been too hasty.

Back from her honeymoon, Caroline Grant received a bill from Dr. Clader's office for a pregnancy examination and when she went to clear it up learned that the Mrs. Grant involved was Nancy. She confronted Nancy and learned that she was four months pregnant. When Caroline asked if Frank was the father, Nancy replied that it was none of her business and finally told her the child was Carl Blair's. Nick Davis had arrived at Erica's to find her note saying that she couldn’t bear to hear him deny her love for him nor stand the idea of a future without him. He called Mona and tried to soothe her concern over her daughter's disappearance, reminding her of Erica's need to get her way, but he later received a call from police headquarters advising that Erica's wallet was found in a trash basket in a rough section of another city. Finally, Mona took a call from a Dr. Chun of the Good Samaritan Hospital in New York City, telling her that Erica had been admitted with what appeared to be pneumonia. Nick went up to New York with Mona and saw Erica who told him that she wanted him to believe that she loved him but "didn't mean for this to happen." Nick told her it helped him to see how much she meant to him and how he took her for granted. He told her, crying, that he loved her. Dr. Charles Tyler took leave from Pine Valley Hospital to be with Mona and he had to tell Nick that Erica's pneumonia was viral in origin and they could only rely on Erica's own strength to pull her through.

Before leaving Pine Valley, Dr. Tyler cornered Benny Sago to tell him that he was barred from the hospital after Charles found the vodka flask Benny had kept replenished for Phoebe. Benny told Charles that he felt sorry for Phoebe and, when Charles insisted that Benny was in a better position than even Phoebe's family to influence her for good, Benny insisted that he had tried and agreed to try harder in the future. Charles told him he appreciated that but, nevertheless, his presence was off limits until Phoebe was out of the hospital.

Brooke English, having struck out in her attempt to scare Devon Shephard away from Dan Kennicott, picked up on the relationship between Mark Dalton and Ellen Shephard and went to work, telling Mark that Erica had been hospitalized. When Mark left to phone Charles she mused that Mark might have a case on Erica. When that remark didn’t hit home - Ellen knew that Erica was Mark's halfsister, though Brooke didn’t -, Brooke speculated that the campus co-eds would be devestated since Ellen seemed to have fully engaged the "young" man's - Mark's - attention.

Dr. Chuck Tyler had had to tell his wife Donna that the latest test definitely proved that she was not pregnant. He explained that she had a tubal blockage and that her symptoms were indicative of an hysterical pregnancy. - Chuck couldn’t bring himself to tell Donna that the blockage was scar tissue from the tubal ligation which Ty had ordered done along with an emergency appendectomy on Donna. He hoped the sterilization might be reversible with surgery in the future and Donna needed never know. - Donna wavered between belief, accompanied by despair, and denial. She agreed to see a psychiatrist but when her first session ended and Dr. Polk prepared to see the next patient, she felt rejected and told him and then Chuck that she was not going back.

Donna’s best friend from her Locust Street days, Estelle, had been visiting a friend she made during the Christmas holidays, an elderly widow, Mrs. Maggie Flannagan who momentarily mistook Stelle for her grand-daughter, in church. With Maggie, Stelle was Maristella Clancy, light years removed from Estelle LaTour of Locust Street. Stelle treasured her visits, bringing groceries and a room heater when Maggie was taken ill. She tried to cover up when Billy Clyde followed her to Maggie's building by telling him she was seeing a John who didn’t like her in her working wig, but when she could produce only six dollars after telling him it was a hundred-dollar call, she took a beating at Billy Clyde's hands. Later she averted a second beating by asking Donna for some money to cover another trip she made to see Mrs. Flannagan during "working hours." - Stelle had told Mrs. Flannagan she worked as a maid for a lady in Pine Valley. –

While Devon Shepherd was performing in a college production of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing," Dan sat in the audience with Ellen Shephard and Mark Dalton. Kate Martin and Harlan Tucker were also in Devon's cheering section, while Ray Gardner skulked around the Martin property. When it was apparent that Ruth and Joe were settled in for the evening - they decided against attending, not trusting completely in Gardner's apparent disappearance -, Gardner, who had seen that Mark and Ellen were the last to leave the Tucker home without locking up, got in and helped himself to $100 from Harlan's dresser. He picked up a pair of antique opera glasses and watched as Ruth prepares for bed. The glasses enabled Ray to focus on the diamond necklace which was Joe's Christmas present to Ruth, and his mind re-echoed the thought he had after his last confrontation with Ruth; that there was more than one way to get money out of the Martins.

Edna Thornton tried to talk Donna into thinking about enjoying being Chuck's wife, saying that raising a child was no picnic and she should be happy to live it up for a while. Donna was too depressed to respond and asked Edna as a favor if she would sell the raffle tickets Donna had for the Medical Society Dance to take place that evening. Edna wasted no time letting David know that she intended to go and he would take her if he knew what was good for him.

Ellen Shepherd had convinced Mark that he should go to New York to see Erica. When Erica told him she was glad he came, he said that he would have walked to get there, and Erica asked his forgiveness. She asked him to promise to look after Mona.

Outside, Mona told Nick that Erica had lost the will to live and begged him to ask her to marry him, to give her a reason to get well. Nick was shocked, saying he couldn't deceive her, but he questioned Dr. Chun again and learning that Erica was critical, he went in and told her that he wanted them to have a life together "for better or for worse." He tells told he needed her to get well so that they could be married.

Ray Garnder, in need of money, sold the opera glasses for $35 to the owner of the diner where he first met Edna Thornton. He dropped in on Edna, his "first pal in Pine Valley," but she sent him nicely on his way, making it clear that she was very happy with her husband and child. She mentioned the Medical Association Dinner that evening at the Country Club. Gardner then bought a ski mask and waited in the back of the Martin car as Joe called in to the hospital and Ruth headed for the parking lot to warm up the car.

Caroline Grant had told Jeff Martin that Nancy's claim that Carl Blair was the father of her expected child just didn’t ring true.

Ellen’s doubts about Mark resurfaced with Claudette Montgomery’s taunts about her own mother’s – Margo Flax - affair with a younger man. Meanwhile, Claudette grew closer to Linc.

Brooke played up to Tom Cudahy after he hired her as Erica’s temporary remplacement as she was still hospitalized in New York, then set another drap for Dan.

Another World

Evil Sven Petersen, although fired by Mac Cory when Mac learned that Sven conspired with his own daughter, Iris Bancroft, to keep Rachel away from him, continued to terrorize Helga and Regina. - Sven would apparently use any means to get what he wanted. According to Helga, Sven killed her husband Knut because Sven wanted Helga to be his wife. Sven's current plan was to use Regina's pregnancy as a means to gain access to Mac's fortune. Using threats of harm to Helga, Sven had forced Regina to tell Mac the baby was his, conceived the night they ostensibly spent together, although neither remembered it. Sven had arranged it to look like they'd slept together after finding out Regina was pregnant with Cliff Tanner's baby. - Regina refused to leave the house because she didn’t want anyone to know she was pregnant - and because she was afraid of running into Sven -, so Mac was arranging to send Regina and Helga to Sweden.

Meanwhile, Sven had checked out the layout of the Gallery and Rachel's daily routine. He then confronted Rachel, demanding she give Mac his freedom. Rachel refused to be intimidated. Sven swore Rachel wouldn't stand in his way.

Rachel’s son, Jamie, and Mac's grandson, Dennis, decided to mend some sails. Regina accompanied them, as she had had experience doing it in Sweden. When they couldn’t get the needles to penetrate the dry sail, Regina said they had to soak it. They opened the trapdoor in the boathouse to tie the sail in the water and discovered a body in a plastic bag. To their horror, they identified Rocky Olsen, the former stableman for Mac and Rachel. They called the police. The boys felt Sven murdered Rocky, recalling a time last summer when Dennis caught Sven about to hit Rocky with a shovel. Presented with clear evidence of what Sven was capable of, and feeling secure that she and her mother would be safe in Sweden soon, Regina talked to Mac. She told him she knew Sven killed Rocky, that according to Helga, Sven murdered her father. Sven, she stated, killed Rocky because Rocky knew how Sven was juggling accounts and thus, stood in Sven's way. Regina confessed that her baby wasn't Mac's, that Sven used threats of harm against Helga unless Regina went along with him. Sven overheard the confession. Mac was ecstatic to learn the truth and began immediately to try to reach Rachel. Ironically, that night Rachel had decided to get an out-of-state divorce so that "Mac's" baby could have its father. Rachel refused all calls from Mac. She made plans to go to Aspen for six weeks.

On the day Rachel was to leave, Sven found her alone in the Gallery. He chloroformed her and took her to a hiding place that he claimed was miles from anywhere. Learning Rachel was to have dinner with Ada and Jamie at Ada's house before leaving, Mac went there to wait. When she didn’t show up and couldn’t be located, everyone assumed she was gone to Aspen without saying good-bye because she was too distraught. Ada, however, started questioning anyone who had contact with Rachel. They found she never arrived in Aspen, and there was no record she took the flight. The mystery deepened when Elena de Poulignac found Rachel's purse behind the Gallery, everything intact. She took it to Mac, who called the police, suspecting foul play.

Rachel, meanwhile, was uncooperative with Sven, refusing to make a tape for Mac. Sven intended to use Rachel to make sure he got lots of money and a way out of the country. Rachel searched for paper and pencil, hoping to write a note that could be found. She was finding the constant sound of engines in her prison annoying. Finally, she accepted food from Sven, to keep up her strength, and agreed to make the tape, aware the sounds might give Mac a clue to her whereabouts.

John Randolph continued in a state of catatonic shock following his accidental shooting of Evan Webster when the two men struggled over Evan's gun, and his wife Olive's grief-prompted revelation that she loved Evan, not John. - Olive had been plotting with Evan to dissolve her marriage to John in such a way as to receive a large divorce settlement. To that end, they engaged the services of Claude Kelly. Olive thought Kelly was going to set John up with some woman in a compromising situation. In reality, Evan and Kelly were plotting John's death in order that Olive would collect his large insurance settlements. Evan was trying to force John outside, where a hit-run driver was waiting to run John down, when the men struggled over the gun. - John's daughter Marianne, recently returned from Europe where she had gone after discovering Olive's affair with Evan and trying unsuccessfully to warn John, had decided Olive killed Evan and was trying to blame John. Marianne went to see Olive, who had confined herself to the house, drinking and dreaming of Evan. When Marianne told Olive her suspicions, Olive inadvertently revealed the name Kelly, blaming Kelly for the whole mess. Marianne reported to lawyer Greg Barnard, who began searching for Kelly, as did Marianne and brother Mike.

Meanwhile, Gwen Parrish and and Willis Frame had learned that Mike's wife Molly was having an affair with Cliff Tanner, who worked for Willis. Gwen suggested to Russ Matthews, John's ex-brother-in-law, that he talk to Cliff about Olive, since Molly had disappeared. Cliff told Russ that Olive gave Molly and him a cabin to conduct their affair in, then tried to use the knowledge of the affair to blackmail Molly into testifying against John in a divorce action she planned to bring. But Cliff wouldn’t testify to this in court without Mike's approval, wanting to save Mike any further embarrassment.

Mike and Marianne pretended to be Evan's sister and cousin and conned their way into Evan's room. There they located the address and phone number for a C.K., whom they discovered was Claude Kelly. Kelly was suspicious after they visited him, so he visited Olive, demanding why, as they said, she sent them to him. Drunken Olive denied sending anyone, and Kelly learned their true identity after seeing a picture of them. The police finally traced the gun Evan had to Kelly, which was enough to draw him in for questioning. Inconsistencies in his story were enough to have the police put him under surveillance.

Greg went to see Olive, trying to get her to reveal more about the plans she and Evan had made with Kelly, but Kelly had told her the whole story about John's planned murder, and she kept quiet, fearful of involvement. She passed out, drunk.

Visits from everyone else had failed to bring John out of his shock, so Greg visited Olive, asking her to see John. She refused, so Greg reverted to subterfuge. He told Olive that Kelly was saying that she killed Evan. Olive said Evan was dead when she arrived, as John could verify. Greg pointed out that they couldn’t ask John, and in order to save herself, she had to help bring John out of his catatonic state.

Otis Vincent « Vince » Frame arrived in Bay City, worried about his younger brother Willis after having spent the holidays in Chadwell with the family. Vince had a history of checking up on Willis. Vince was upset to learn that Willis had dropped Angie Perrini and was seeing Alice Frame Gordon, hoping to marry Alice someday. Vince antagonized Alice and Willis when he tried to talk Alice out of her involvement with Willis. Burt McGowan offered Vince a job and Vince had an interest in Angie but she had not forgotten about Willis.

Regina told Cliff that the baby was his. She wanted him to accompany her to Sweden, but he refused, saying he had to stay around to help a friend. But he promised to join her later.

Helga found the tape Rachel made for Sven. The ransom demanded was half a million dollars. Brian arrived at Mac's right after Mac and Ada heard the tape. Despite the tape's imprecations not to contact the police, Brian insisted that Mac do so, as only they could advise him properly. The phone lines had been cut, and they feared the phone might be tapped, so Ada went home and sent Vince Frame to the police, telling him only that Mac wanted two officers in an unmarked car to drop by. Ada tried to keep the news from Jamie, but told him finally, as they feared he could also be taken. Regina told Mac she knew the kidnapper was Sven, and she feared for Rachel's life if Mac contacted the police. When the police arrived, Regina told them her reasons for thinking Sven was behind the kidnapping. Meanwhile, Mac made a tape promising to comply, as ordered. Sven had Rachel make another tape with orders where to leave the money. She had been examining her prison carefully and, from things Sven said, realized she was not far away. She managed to use the word kidnapper – singular – on the second recording, confirming Regina's feelings. Burt McGowan, using the pretext that he had business with Mac, went to the house on Ada's behalf and listened to the first tape. He recognized the background noise on the tape as coming from a machine, but said it was not clear enough to identify the specific machine.

Liz Matthews’s daughter, Susan arrived in Bay City, having separated from her husband. Gwen Parrish avoided working with Elena, convinced she had sunk her hooks into Russ. Gwen beat Elena to the punch and was the one who cuddled with Russ.

Desperate for some reaction from John, Greg, with Pat's permission, arranged for Pat and Olive to see John at the same time. Olive was angry at Pat's presence and lashed out at John, who backed her into a corner, saying, almost incoherently, "I loved you." Olive fled; Pat was broken-hearted, believing John still loved Olive. At home, Marianne realized Pat still wore her wedding ring. When Pat started to remove it, Marianne begged her to keep it on for John's sake and hers. Kelly was brought in while Mike gave a deposition to the police. Overhearing Mike's opinions, which put him in the middle of things, Kelly told the police to talk to Olive, who knew more than she was telling. Lt. Lafferty went to see Olive, who was uncooperative.

Lisa Colman had planned a party that had grown quite large. Grant didn’t think they should advertise being back together. One of the provisions of reconciliation was that they decided things together. Grant began to wonder if they could really make it when she announced at the party that she was going back to work full time. Grant questioned her decision and she felt he didn't want her to work.

Grant and Valerie Conway had tried to avoid one another since Grant's reconciliation with Lisa, but as Valerie's lawyer, Grant had to see her on business. He asked Chris Hughes to take her over as a client, but Chris’ calendar was full. Nancy Hughes told Lisa that she regretted that Valerie and her son, Dr. Bob Hughes, were no longer seeing one another. Lisa thought that promoting this relationship would show Grant that she was no longer infatuated with Bob. Bob and Valerie both tried discouraging Lisa.

John Dixon was playing on Mary Ellison's sympathy by continually reminding her that he was in the hospital because he saved her and her son from a fire. He used Dr. Alexander Keith in his effort to keep people from warning Mary against seeing him. After several broken dates, Ralph Mitchell told Mary he wouldn’t wait around. Realizing how much Ralph meant to her, Mary told John she wouldn’t be visiting any more. Ralph couldn’t stand being without her company and they made up. When John asked Mary to bring a contract from his apartment, he was furious when Mary's friend, Laurie Keaton delivered it.

Sandy Garrison Thompson was still very insecure in her marriage to Kevin. They had taken Natalie Hughes' apartment, across the hall from the Stallingses. When Dr. Susan Stewart showed up at the same restaurant with her daughter and niece, Kevin talked to them, but didn’t mention this to Sandy, who was on the phone. Kevin left the apartment after an argument, during which Sandy accused him of keeping this secret because he was still in love with Susan. Sandy called Susan looking for Kevin and was then ashamed of herself. Sandy was angry when Susan denied seeing Kevin at the hospital when Kevin himself had told her.

Dr. Bob Hughes was working in emergency when a hit-and-run case turned out to be the young woman who gave his daughter an ornament at Christmas. Bob felt she was lying when she claimed to remember nothing. She had no identification, but finally admitted she was Karen Parker and asked if she could have been run down on purpose.

Dee Stewart was feeling very depressed. Tom Hughes had told her that a relationship between them was impossible because she was so much younger than he. As he was dating Melinda Gray, who was even younger.

The Grand Jury thought there was enough evidence to try Jay Stallings for Pete Larson's murder. After his alibi fell through, Jay had insisted that he had coffee and a beer, but didn’t remember where he went. He couldn’t tell Tom Hughes that he was with Melinda Gray because he had to protect his marriage. Tom was sure Jay was lying, because, if he were alert enough to call Fred McGill for an alibi, he should remember where he went.

Beau and Annie Spencer told Beau's mother that they had decided against her gift of a country club membership because Annie would be returning to med school when he passesd his bar exam. When Annie suspected she might be pregnant, she told Beau and her mother. Hearing the news from Beau, Jane accused Annie of maneuvering Beau and keeping him from her.

Jane agreed to write a letter so that Joyce and Don Hughes could be accepted for membership to the country club, but forgot. Joyce reminded her and suggests that she use Don for her divorce lawyer. Joyce's demands for the country club, a new house, remodeling and new furniture left Don short. He wanted to forego the country club, but she threw a fit, demanding he ask his father for help. Once he agreed, Joyce was all sweetness.

Mark Lewis’ condition was serious. David Stewart blamed Dr. Keith for Susan's involvement. She was going without food and sleep. David said Keith was responsible for Susan because he used her to keep Mark's morale up. Keith saw that David was right and insisted on taking her to dinner and then home to sleep. He spent the entire weekend with Susan, to keep her from drinking until the crisis was over. As he had recovered from pneumonia and his blood disease was in remission, Mark could be released. Keith thought he should go back to his college in Michigan, since they would admit him in the middle of the year. Mark would like to remain in Oakdale be near Susan.

Kim Stewart had tried to see both sides of the conflict between Dr. Keith and her husband Dan. Kim finally felt Keith was being unjust. One day she and Keith were stuck between floors in the elevator and, as they waited to be rescued, he explained that Mark's mother, whom Kim resembled, was in love with him and was going to ask her husband for a divorce on the day their sailboat capsized and they were both drowned. He decided that he would no longer remain silent about anything that mattered to him. Maybe he had gone too far. Kim and Dan both felt easier then.

Bob had his father check into Karen's accident, telling him that all she had was a large sum of money and an expensive piece of jewelry. Bob decided not to get involved when Karen walked out of the hospital.

Carol assured Tom that Jay was not involved with another woman, but Tom could think of no other reason for Jay to lie about where he was the night Pete was killed. The other lawyers agreed that Tom had done the best he could, but Jay was in serious trouble. Jay was losing clients and, with the money Natalie stole from him, he had little capital. Tom finally told Jay that he had five minutes to come clean before he called Dick Martin, asking for a postponement. Further delay would cost him more business, so Jay admitted he was with a girl. He picked up a girl who was only in town for the night and didn’t know where they had a drink.

Melinda dropped a pair of gloves that she said were Tom's. Dee gave them to Tom, but he said they weren't his and Dee put them on the file cabinet.

Annie told Beau that she was not pregnant and they should tell their mothers right away. Beau and Annie were relieved, but both were sad also. They decided, though, that it was for the best if Annie was to return to med school. Jane told Ellen before Annie got the chance. She also told Ellen that she thought Annie manipulated Beau.

Joyce told Don that they wouldn't have financial problems if Don was paid more. She said that Grant was deliberately holding Don back because he was jealous. Don asked his father to speak to Grant, but Chris refused.

Sandy could see that Kevin seemed to be returning to the tormented person he was before coming to Oakdale. Susan sent Kevin on his way, telling him she really was interested in Alexander Keith, but Dr. Keith confided his attraction for Kim to Susan.

Days of our Lives

Don Craig was then a candidate for state senator. Everyone who knew him felt he was an excellent choice for the post as he was fair minded and willing to take time to examine all aspects of an issue. The fly in the ointment proved to be reporter Eileen Harris, whose particular forte was gossip. Harris wrote a juicy piece, after Don announced, about his living arrangements with Dr. Marlena Evans. Don and Marlena were living together, even though Marlena was unable to make a committment to marriage at this time. Both were annoyed at Harris' article, but decided to let it ride. Harris next aggravated Don by talking to Marlena about the rape crisis center at the clinic. Marlena, unaware of who Harris really was, talked freely about her support of federally funded abortions for rape and incest cases. Don blew his stack, telling Marlena that she had then made him an abortion candidate. He warned Marlena that she had to watch what she said because people would assume she was speaking for him. Marlena refused to give in to that, pointing out that she had a right to her opinons. But again the ugly spectre of Harris stalked them. She wrote an article about how Marlena's twin sister Samantha was mentally ill, crudely implying that since the girls shared the same genes and were twins, the same could be true of Marlena. Don warned Harris to stay out of his personal life or he would find grounds to sue her.

After Larry Atwood made a call to the owner of the ski resort where Doug Williams was singing over New Year's, the police searched his room and found cocaine, planted by a chorus girl while Doug was on stage. Not wanting to worry his wife Julie, Doug called her in Salem and told her he had been held over by popular demand. However, Julie learned the truth the following morning when a huge article proclaimed Doug's trouble on the front page of the paper. Atwood rushed to Julie's side, asking if there was anything he could do. Julie was pleased by the offer of help. Atwood then pretended to have just remembered that he knew the owner of the ski lodge, and called the man, asking him to intervene. Doug was released, never having been officially arrested or booked. Julie was grateful to Atwood. Lawyer Mickey Horton suggested that Doug and Julie have their hearing in front of the state liquor control board, an appeal to have Doug's liquor license renewed, postponed, in light of the news article. Doug and Julie insisted they go ahead, as Doug needed to return to the club, and Julie couldn’t stand being alone anymore. Atwood called a contact and asked for the list of the character witnesses who would appear for Doug. One of them was Dr. Neil Curtis. Atwood invited Neil to a poker game the night before the hearing and got Neil drunk. Neil spent the night on Atwood's couch, waking an hour before the hearing. Atwood sent him on his way with orange juice, liberally laced with vodka, unbeknownst to Neil, The hearing went fairly well, Doug able to explain away the cocaine incident, and the other witnesses speaking well of him. Then Neil burst in, reeling drunk. Julie dragged him outside and told him of her complete disgust, ending by telling Neil that it would be his fault if Doug didn’t get his license. The judge promised an answer in 30 days. That same night, Julie fired the busboy Arlo, planted at the club by Atwood. - Atwood wanted to put gambling in the back rooms of Doug's Place. When Doug turned him down cold, Atwood began his behind the scenes manipulations to force Doug to accept his offer. –

Trish Clayton Banning and husband David were making a go of their marriage, despite small problems. Trish enjoyed singing at Doug's Place three nights a week, but was annoyed that David found it necessary to be there, too, jealous of other men gawking at his wife. The Bannings worked through these problems.

Bob Anderson had persuaded Linda Phillips to become his executive assistant at Anderson Manufacturing. Linda had persuaded Bob to become her bed partner. Linda's presence at the plant was a thorn in Bob's daughter Mary's side. Before Bob left on a promotion tour, he asked Linda to break her engagement to Tommy Horton, but couldn't promise anything else yet, though he admitted he was falling in love with Linda. After Bob left, Linda broke with Tommy, whom she had only been using to make Bob jealous. While Bob was in L.A., he suffered chest pains and was hospitalized. Mary told Chris, who helped her make travel arrangements. Linda interrupted, saying Mary was overreacting, and that she, not Mary, should go, as Mary would just upset Bob. Mary and Chris saw through her, and it was Mary who went. Chris was delighted to have blocked Linda this time, but Linda wasn’t to be thwarted. When Bob and Mary returned, she had reorganized the chain of command so that she then decided what Bob saw, making all executive decisions about which projects would be funded. Bob accepted her plan, presented as a way of helping him lighten his work load, in view of his recent problems. Bob almost proposed to Linda, having discovered he loved her, but wanted to make sure he was in perfect health before making a committment to a "young wife." Tom Horton checked Bob out and told him to proceed with marriage plans if he wanted, but Bob wanted to wait until all test results were in.

Bill Horton and Kate Winograd were fired from the hospital's staff after a young intern lied that Bill had ordered him from the operating room and taken over delicate brain surgery on Fred Barton, even though Bill wasn't board certified for surgery at the time. In truth, Rick Stevens panicked and walked out, concocting his story to cover himself. Chief of Surgery Walter Griffin had Stevens transferred to Chicago after the incident. Barton was paralyzed from the waist down. He had filed a malpractice suit against the hospital, Bill and Kate. The hospital wanted to settle, but Bill, with Kate's support, refused, saying what he did save Barton's life and Stevens was lying. Chief of staff Greg Peters, unable to get through to Bill, went to Bill's wife Laura, asking her to intervene. Greg felt that if Bill settled, he could get his case reopened in front of a board of inquiry and get Bill and Kate reinstated. Laura, who felt Bill was being unreasonable in not settling, that he was tilting after windmills of principle, presented the case, but Bill was adamant that the case come to trial, as that was the only way to be exonerated of something he didn't do. Feeling Laura was not on his side, Bill turned to Kate. Kate, however, resisted his advances, with difficulty, as she was falling in love with him. Bill moved to the Salem Inn after a fight with Laura. The family tried to get them together.

Langford, Barton’s attorney, felt the strongest things they had in their favor were Fred's confinement in the wheelchair, which would make the jury sympathetic, and the fact that Bill was not board certified for surgery. Langford warned Fred not to lose his vile temper in court or to let it become public knowledge that he beat his wife. Fred denied beating Jean, blaming neighbor Maggie Horton for spreading rumors. Jean had been attending a group for battered wives. Fred demanded she stop attending; Jean refused, adding she would no longer take any abuse from him. Fred started after her in the wheelchair, but Jean managed to lock herself in the bedroom. She called Marlena for help, then packed her bag. Getting past Fred, Jean left, brushing past Marlena on her way out. Fred came out of the elevator as Marlena pushed the button. She told him Jean was gone and asked to talk. They got stuck in the elevator.

Walter Griffin, who refused to return to the hospital to do the surgery on Fred because he was worried about his daughter, Patti, who was out past curfew, sent Patti to visit his sister-in-law after Patti was involved in an accident with Ron Garvey, who had been drinking. Ron had broken up with Patti before she left Salem.

Greg learned from Rick Stevens, after Mickey visited Stevens, that the intern would return and testify on Bill's behalf. Griffin, who had had a long-standing feud with Bill, who felt Griffin was knife-happy, couldn’t believe that Bill was story is the true story.

While trapped in the elevator with Fred, Marlena gained insight into his psychological problems: Fred was a battered child, whose alcoholic father not only beat his mother and him, but occasionally locked Fred in the closet. Thus, he was angry at himself and not only abused himself with incredible expectations for success that were impossible to achieve, he stroke out at the extensions of himself, Billy and Jean. After loosening up briefly, Fred again became wary. Meanwhile, when Don couldn't reach Marlena while on a speaking tour, he finally called Greg Peters. Greg learned from Marlena's secretary that she was headed for the Barton apart-ment. When he couldn’t get any answer on the phone, Greg became concerned and went over, discovering Fred and Marlena's plight. Although Fred continued to resist therapy, he was haunted by Marlena's words that she could help him.

David Banning was promoted by Bob to become Linda's assistant. Bob gave Linda the title of chief administrative officer. Linda didn’t want David in her office; Mary and Chris were delighted that a friend would be close to Linda.

Arlo went to Larry Atwood and asked for a bigger piece of the action, threatening to blow the whistle on Atwood if he didn’t get it. Atwood told him he couldn’t trust someone who could't follow orders, like keeping his job at Doug's Place. He warned Arlo to just get out of town. Atwood then had Arlo beaten up. Arlo found his way to Mary's studio, where Mary and Chris got him medical attention. In the hospital, Arlo received a threat: get out of town or he would be killed. Arlo was touched by Robert's overtures of friendship and concern. Unsuspicious, Jeri Clayton let herself being seduced by Atwood and spent the night with him.

Bill tried to persuade Kate to become his mistress. Kate refused, telling Bill she refused to spend her life being alone on important occasions, as all married men loved their wives on some level and spent those occasions with them.

Mike Horton was casually dating Margo Anderman. Margo began an improvement program to impress Michael but he was only interested in hanky-panky.

The Doctors

Steve Aldrich’s son, Erich had been having periodic bouts of tiredness, which had prevented him from playing with friends or attending school. Alarmed because of Erich's heart trouble when he was an infant, Steve and Carolee took Erich to Matt Powers for an evaluation. After examining Erich, Matt concluded that Erich had one of two conditions: paroxysmal tachicardia, small episodes of runaway heart beats which could be controlled by drugs, or Parkinson-White syndrome, a fatal condition, usually. When medication didn’t work, Matt put Erich through more tests, which revealed Erich definitely had the latter condition, in which tissues called the Bundle of Kent were obstructing proper blood flow through the heart. There were two methods of treatment, both extremely risky: surgery or a restricted lifestyle. While Steve and Carolee were trying to decide which option to choose, Erich made the decision. He asked for surgery, as he couldn’t stand not being able to play and be active. When Steve and Carolee concured, Matt began the search for a surgeon, as the operation was fairly new and few men had done it. Matt discovered that a pioneer in the area was then living in the U.S. Matt contacted Dr. Colin Wakefield, who agreed to a consultation. When he arrived, late, from Duke Medical Center, he insulted everyone by insisting on redoing the tests, without consulting those already done, and refusing to discuss anything further until he met Erich. Wakefield also insisted on taking Erich to Duke for the surgery, until he toured Hope's facilities and decided they were adequate. He and Erich got along fine. Everything ran smoothly for a while, until Wakefield insisted he wouldn't do the surgery, even though he had discovered two Bundles of Kent, until Steve and Carolee told Erich he could die on the table.

Learning ex-husband Jason Aldrich and Nola Dancy had eloped, Doreen Aldrich attempted to re-establish a relationship with former lover Luke Dancy, Nola's brother, who was then working as an artist for the newspaper. Luke wasn’t over-enthusiastic about resuming their relationship, even though Doreen offered managing Andre's as an enticement. However, Luke hadn't counted on interference from his father, Barney. Having parleyed $875 of wife Virginia's savings into a $5000 nest egg by playing the horses, Barney had gone after more of a good thing. He and Virginia planned to spend the $5000 to buy a candy store. But they needed stock and display cases, etc. So Barney had been playing long-shots again with the nest egg. He was then broke, as Luke discovered one day. Unable to disappoint his mother, Luke told Barney he could bail him out. Luke went to Doreen and got a loan for $5000, and agreed to discuss taking over Andre's again, in a positive light.

Matt Powers finally swallowed his pride and suggested wife Maggie move home again, hopeful they would be able to work things out. - Maggie moved out when Matt withheld forgiveness and understanding after daughter Greta told him Maggie had spent the night once with architect Kyle Wilson. Even Maggie's assurances that her love for Matt had grown stronger hadn't moved him 'til then. - Greta was in love with Billy Aldrich and they had been making love without contraception, as Greta felt it was the only way to keep Billy's interest as he was in college and surrounded by "all those college girls." Greta had been trying to get counsel from Maggie, whose own problems had led her to neglect Greta. So, Greta and friend Judy journeyed to a birth control clinic in a nearby town. But Greta panicked. She told Billy, however, that she got a diaphragm. After Maggie moved back home, she and Greta finally got to talk, and Maggie realized the pressure Greta felt, but she was concerned about permitting contraceptives. Matt refused absolutely, saying he wouldn’t push away his standards to conform to Greta's wishes, feeling that giving her contraceptives was giving her a license to make love. Greta returned to the clinic for a diaphragm, but couldn’t be fitted until after her next period — which was a week late! Maggie and Matt discussed Greta again, and Maggie convinced Matt that it was better to be safe than sorry because Greta really believed she was in love with Billy. Ironically, Billy was not committed to Greta, confiding to a buddy that he was seeing other girls, and that even though he was fond of Greta, he was not going to see her exclusively. Greta made another appointment at the clinic and was talked into a pregnancy test. Matt talked to Steve, suggesting Steve talk with Billy. Billy understood what Steve was saying about Greta's feeling pressure to make love with him, but also suggested to Steve that the male wasn't always the initiator.

Mike Powers was in love with Sara Dancy, who had quit her job as Jason's secretary to take courses and to work at Hope as a psychiatric social worker. Sara sidestepped marriage at this point, saying she was too busy with starting a new career and wasn't ready for a marital committment. Mike asked if she was still in love with the doctor from the Peace Corps? Sara sad not, that she got over Colin Wakefield when she learned he was married. Sarah decide to move into Nola's old apartment. Mike avoided telling her that Wakefield was in town to operate on Erich Aldrich.

Jason and Nola Aldrich returned from a glorious honeymoon in Mexico following their elopement. They decided to live with Mona for a while. Mona, although not altogether approving of Nola, appeared to be going out of her way to introduce Nola into their social world and to also make Nola comfortable in it. Nola was enjoying her new status, but was annoyed when Jason wouldn’t drop his work late in the evening to go dancing.

When Carolee and Steve were unable to tell Erich he could die on the operating table, Colin took it upon himself to reveal the hazard to the boy. Steve and Carolee were furious, but Colin explains to Steve that knowing the truth usually caused the patient to muster his will to live, an important factor in Erich's recovery. Erich didn’t seem too upset.

Colin and Sara ran into each other outside Erich's room. Sara was able to banter lightly with Colin, but when he visited her office later, she seemed very tense. Mike was helping Sara move into Nola's old apartment. While she was packing, Sara told Virginia that it was totally over with Colin, in addition to which, she had never got involved with a married man, which Colin obviously was. Mike still felt threatened by Colin. Sara's feelings for Mike were strong, but she didn’t find him particularly exciting. Everyone wondered about the mysterious personal tragedy in Colin's life.

Mona made great effort to introduce Nola into her social circle. Nola felt great pressure to impress Mona's friends, as she sometimes still thought of herself as the housekeeper's daughter, not Jason's wife. Jason warned that the best way to impress those people was to be herself.

Greta was pregnant. She called Billy, who was furious at first at being summoned. They agreed that the best course was an abortion, but Greta refused to confide her condition to Maggie. Judy tried to persuade Greta to accompany her to her cousin's house in Springfield, where Greta could get the abortion without seeing anyone who knew her. Greta was afraid of complications and death.

The Edge of Night

Things had barely had time to cool down at Monticello's Police Headquarters since Ray Harper confessed to the Richardson/Drake murders. On his first day on the job as detective, Steve Guthrie received an anonymous letter written by Raney Cooper, Tony Saxon's new associate, tipping him about an account in the name of James Armstead at Monticello Trust. The tip was Tony Saxon's name was connected with the account. Attorney Mike Karr used his influence with the bank manager resulting in the discovery that sixty to seventy thousand dollars went in and out of that account at one time and James Armstead was an alias for Tony Saxon. Tony was already famous for his surreptitious maneuvers behind a political facade. This led assistant D.A. Logan Swift to comment that Kevin Jamison's recent appointment to the Crime Commission was manipulated by Tony to get Kevin "in his back pocket." Kevin might as well be there, since he had reached a frustrating dead end with the other cronie members of the commission who seemed satisfied to dwell only on the up-front crimes occurring on the streets. Kevin's goals were to dig into the underground operations.

Raney made an intentional - ? - mistake of relaying a message from Armstead for Tony while in the presence of Steve, who caught and questioned Tony's association with the name. Tony walked out without an answer.

Eager to join Steve in the rank of detective was Steve's police buddy Calvin. The Richardson/Drake murder case had been put to rest, but the Block Street Murder mystery was wide open. Calvin involved Steve's girlfriend Deborah Saxon in some undercover work, hoping to uncover the identity of a man who had murdered several red-heads, one of whom was a policewoman in disguise. Knowing Steve was against risking Deborah's life in police work again, Calvin was reluctant to continue. Deborah, however, having the taste of challenge from her undercover work for Steve, insisted going through with it. Together they set up an unofficial stakeout using Deborah as a decoy and her natural red hair the prime lure for her suspect. Calvin was riding high as he and Deborah nabbed a man on the make for her. Steve stumbled on a contradiction that the man booked for suspicion of the Block Street murders was their culprit when he shut the locker door of a cop whose beat just happened to be Block Street and discovered several photos of women … all redheads!

Lt. Chandler felt there was good consideration to be given to his friend Dr. Roper's suggestion that the murderer was "trained to kill." He had a hard time convincing Chief Marceau that their suspect could be a cop. Even with Steve's latest bulletin, received from Officer Vinney Ryerson's former partner, Marceau couldn’t believe one of his men could've gone astray. Steve knew this was their man because of his past in Vietnam, gaining instant killing techniques and his wife, a redhead herself, left him cold and dry for her lover. Ryerson repaid them both with a beating that left permanent scars. Chandler asserted that a mentally insane person could work in any profession.

Meanwhile, Ryerson learned from Calvin of the decoy and, using his protective police business as his own decoy, got Deborah away from Calvin's eagle eye and out the back door of the bar into an alley.

Dr. Miles Cavanaugh had been instructed to meet philanthropist Owen Crimmons at the clinic where Miles' friend, Dr. Dave Roper worked. - Miles refused to pussyfoot Crimmons to please his father-in-law for the sake of a healthy donation to the Claremont Hospital. - Furious with the news that Crimmons took his half million dollars and gave it to the underprivileged clinic, as Miles suggested, Denise's father ordered Miles to forget his medical duties for as long as it took to replace the money he poured down the drain. In the heat of an argument, Miles resigned as the prestigious Claremont's chief-of-staff. Miles' wife Denise thought Miles would have his sulk, then be back. To the contrary, Miles had gone to Monticello and accepted Dave's job offer as a physician on the clinic staff. Denise received a letter from Miles instructing her to begin apartment hunting in Monticello. With the evidence clear he was not returning to the Claremont, Denise vowed Nicole Drake would not take Miles away from her. - When Nicole spent her high risk pregnancy at the Claremont, Denise, consistent to her possessiveness, never missed an opportunity to accuse Miles of desiring vivacious, widowed Nicole. He denied her every accusation but while Nicole slept after the birth of her son, he admitted his love to her. –

April Cavanaugh was very excited that despite her delicate heart condition, Draper Scott proposed to her. The excitement proved too much for her weakened heart to handle and while Miles was visiting his sister, she passed out. He had her rushed to the hospital. Realizing her days were numbered, April, at first, refused to marry Draper. She explained she couldn’t guarantee her permanency. Draper's love and thoughtfulness penetrated April's fear over the surgery that could save her life. She surprised and pleased both Miles and her doctor, Dr. Bernham with her approval for the microsurgery because—she was going to be married!

April, while resting before surgery, met Charlie, the hospital electrician. He recognized April because he used to be employed at the Claremont, until Denise fired him. April found it unbelievable that Denise, as Charlie swore, blamed him for cutting the wires of the patient call board. He went on that it was Denise who let Miles' patient die and blamed Charlie for the faulty wires. - Denise's jealousy, pushed to the limit by the attractive and flirtatious Katharine Dane, made her deliberately ignore Katharine's call for help, using faulty wires as her alibi. –

Newlyweds Raven and Kevin Jamison had yet another lover's quarrel because of Raven's dishonesty. Her excuse to Kevin that she was visiting sick April backfired when Draper told Kevin April had been hospitalized. Raven wiggled out of Kevin's angry accusations and was once again on her way to Logan Swift's apartment with Kevin's apologies. Logan wasn't welcoming Raven with open arms, protesting to being the object of her infidelity. He even dated his secretary Maggie to raise Raven’s jealousy. Just to ensure her story this time, for Kevin's benefit, Raven called April. April's news of her engagement did not sit well with Raven. She blurts out "Draper took pity and proposed to Little Miss Heart Attack." The bell rang clear to Logan — she didn’t want Kevin or himself— Raven wanted Draper Scott! He pushed her out the door and out of his life.

Raven checked out Draper's intentions, hoping his proposal wasn't a gesture of goodwill. Draper just learned from Dr. Bernham April might die on the operating table because of the damage caused to her heart when her father misdiagnosed her illness. Her reserves were poor. Despite this news, he assured Raven he intended to spend the rest of his life with the woman he loved. He credited Raven for the proposal. When she had alerted him to the seriousness of April's illness, it forced him to face his feelings and then he knew he wanted to marry April.

Raven was living up to Kevin's description of his wife as having a terminal case of spoiled rottenness by refusing to leave the comfort and luxury of Geraldine Whitney's mansion, even after Geraldine became Mrs. Anthony Saxon. That gala event took place at City Hall on Friday, January 13. Geraldine boasted to her new bridegroom, she was the happiest woman alive.

For Richer, For Poorer

Jason Saxton gave Roger Hamilton an ultimatum. He wanted a partnership in the Cushing brokerage house or he would leave with his clients. He had had an offer and couldn’t wait long. Roger told his son Desmond about Jason's threat. Roger would propose a vice-presidency and let him know Edith's decision. Roger told Edith and Austin Cushing that he suggested the vice-presidency as a compromise because Jason wanted a partnership. Maybe they could use this to buy time to win back some of the influential clients Jason had acquired since Richard's death. Austin had to break the news to Amy that he would be working full-time until Jason could be stopped.

Roger and Desmond asked Laurie to take her stock account away from Jason. Laurie went to Jason with that intent, but was seduced by Jason and then confided to him that Roger, Edith and Austin intended to take clients from him. Jason confronted Edith, but she denied any plot. Jason visited Barbara Manners to enlist her aid in his fight, saying they were both outsiders, as far as the family was concerned. - Barbara was Richard's mistress before his death. He left her stock and a seat on the board, Richard's daughter Megan was grateful to Barbara for keeping him there. Her parents marriage had been almost non-existent. –

Laurie couldn’t resist Jason even though she feared Desmond might learn of their relationship. Laurie's mother overheard a phone conversation and showed up at Jason's to retrieve Laurie. Jason tried to convince Laurie that nothing had changed.

Megan Cushing was throwing herself into her job at the magazine since her breakup with Bill Saxton. Stan Hillman had put her in touch with Mrs. Quinn, who lived in a rough neighborhood that was terrorized by the Savage Avengers, a street gang. Her son's body was found in a burnt tenement, and the police implied he set the fire. She claimed her son was helping an old woman who had been frightened by the gang move her belongings. Someone saw a gang member follow her son into the building.

A member of the Savage Avengers, Paco, the Information Minister, contacted Megan and insisted she meet them at Mrs. Quinn's to talk things over. Hearing that Megan was investigating street gangs, Bill was concerned for her safety. He insisted that if Stan was unable to accompany her in that part of town, she call him to go along.

Lee Ferguson visited Amy Cushing and insisted that she talk to him or he would camp on her doorstep. He said he was not leaving town until he found out what had his sister Connie so uptight. Lee learned nothing from Amy, but bluffed Connie into spilling the whole story. She not only told him she was pregnant and got Megan Cushing to call off her marriage to Bill Saxton, she even admitted she got pregnant on purpose. Lee confronts Bill and said that if Bill wouldn’t do right by Connie, he would take things into his own hands. Lee told Connie that they could force Bill into marriage if he thought he would never see the baby again. He made arrangements for Connie to go to a home where « private » adoptions were arranged for money. This way Bill wouldn't be able to find her. Connie talked a little too much to Harriet, the potential adoptive mother. Realizing that Connie had no intention of giving up her baby, Harriet tried to force Connie into signing papers giving Harriet the right to arrange adoption. Lee arrived just in time to take Connie from Harriet's care.

Hearing that Connie intended to give the baby up for adoption, Bill told his brother-in-law, lawyer George Kimball, that he wanted custody of the baby. George thought that Connie might be involved in an illegal adoption. Lee brought Connie into court and she was able to make a favorable impression, causing the judge to deny Bill's petition. While at Harriet's, Connie was told how one girl faked suicide to get out of the home. She told Lee that she was sure Bill would fall for this. First they had to make people think that her state of mind was such that she would take her life. They had George over to discuss support and Connie cried without reason. Then she visited Amy and talks about understanding why people killed themselves.

Ellie Kimball let it slip in front of her father that Bentley was quitting school to get a job. Learning that his wife Josie knew about this as well as her keeping secret that Bill was the father of Connie's expected baby led Lester Saxton to believe that his family didn’t need him. He had stayed sober for several weeks, but was still unable to get a job and his family treated him as an emotional cripple.

Josie and Bill had both asked Jason to find Lester a job at Cushing's, but he had refused. When George told Desmond how down Lester was, Desmond said he really could use Lester.

Bentley asked Austin's help in finding Lester. Lester refused to leave the bar so Austin stayed with him. When told about Desmond's offer, Lester was too proud to take a job he didn't find himself.

Connie visited Bill to tell him not to worry about her. Learning that he was leaving on an assignment, she put her suicide note in his camera case. Lee had taken Ira to friends for the day. He told Connie that if he didn’t hear from her in an hour and a half, he was coming back. Connie emptied the remaining pills down the drain after taking three, and then lay down to await Bill's arrival.

Bill’s assignment was to accompany Megan to Mrs. Quinn's. Upon their arrival they found that Paco was already there and had intimidated Mrs. Quinn. When he returned home, Bill opened his camera case and found Connie's note. He phoned, but there was no answer.

Lee called an ambulance when he found Connie unconscious. Lee let it slip that this wouldn't have happened if Bill had gotten there earlier. Bill blamed himself for not taking Connie seriously. When Lee told him that Connie was in a coma from an overdose, Ira remembered that it was Lee who wanted him out of the house.

Desmond had found a house that he thought they would like. Upon hearing this news, Viola told Laurie that she would not let her move into a situation where it would be easier for her to cheat on Desmond. Confronted by Viola, Jason said that if she asked Edith to fire him, Desmond would surely learn of Laurie's infidelity.

After he sobered up, Les decided to see Desmond about the job he was offering. Desmond needed someone to set up his new law office, but when he leared that Les did law research in the service he told him that he needed him more than ever.

Bentley told Lester that he quit school because he was a lousy student. After a calm discussion Bentley agreed to enroll for summer classes.

Edith had Roger and Jason to dinner to celebrate Jason's promotion to vice-president. Edith tried to remain jovial even when Jason showed how happy he was that Megan was able to join them for dinner.

Jason was sympathetic when Megan asked if he understood why she had to call off the wedding. Jason said that it was the only thing she could do. Megan was startled when Jason said that Bill had been spending a lot of time with Connie.

General Hospital

On Monday, January 16th, the soap expanded to 60 minutes, airing from 3:00 to 4:00.

Alan Quartermaine had been summoned to a meeting in New York by the chemical corporation which was considering setting up its executive center in Port Charles. All indications were that the decision would be positive, making a new Cardiac Wing at General Hospital more suitable to the sudden population growth than the helicopter relay service Alan felt would be adequate. Alan telephoned Monica to ask her to cancel a scheduled test-run helicopter flight he had set up with Rick Webber as part of a demonstration of the plan he had been prepared to recommend. Dr. Gail Adamson was a witness as Monica lied to Alan, making it clear to Gail when she hung up, that despite the threatening weather, and Alan's specific orders to the contrary, she intended to go ahead with the flight, substituting herself for Alan.

That evening, Rick and Lesley Webber were to host a holiday party which Lesley had decided to go ahead with despite her depression - which she gave out to be illness - for the past few days over her unhappy situation with her daughter Laura.

Laura told Scotty Baldwin that she intended to ignore Lesley’s messages asking her to be home early that day before the party, saying that David Hamilton could help Les with the last minute preparations but she needed time to think of a way to keep Lesley from checking further into the prescription records at Mercy Hospital Clinic and learning that she was referred there by Monica. She arranged to join Scotty, his father Lee, and Dr. Gail Adamson to drive over together, arriving after the first guests were there and intending to give Lesley no opportunity to talk to her as she would have to change into suitable party clothes. By the time they arrived, Lesley had learned that Rick had not been back to the hospital and Gail murmured to Lee Baldwin that she could strangle Monica when Dorrie called back to relay a message from the flight base that the helicopter was overdue in a heavy snowstorm and when last heard from, the pilot was looking for a place to put down to wait out the storm.

After an anxious wait with a houseful of guests, Lesley heard that Rick, Monica and the helicopter pilot had made it to Lake Forrest ranger station where they had made radio contact and intended to spend the night. Laura had been so upset by Lesley's unhappiness that Lesley gently apologized to her, saying that she had been accusing when she just should have asked what she wanted to know. When she questioned Laura, she was told that she heard about the clinic through friends but when Lesley asked who was the doctor who prescribed the pills, Laura mentioned the name of the doctor who examined her and Leslie did not detect the distinction.

After Monica and Rick returned to Port Charles, Monica arranged to have a reporter from the Daily Record interview Rick about the fact that their pilot had hurt his arm and Rick had flown the helicopter out.

Alan Quartermaine, after seeing the paper and talking with Rick, asked Monica whether he did or did not cancel that helicopter run. He went on to say that the whole trip was unnecessary to the survey and he was then reading about her as if she was some heroine who risked her life on a rescue mission. He told her evidently she couldn’t obey orders and make decisions that weren’t based upon personal gain. Monica told Alan that she would not stand there and be treated like a school girl and walked out, but to Gail Adamson she admitted that she arranged the whole thing on nothing more than a whim. She insisted that Rick was ancient history and confided to Gail that she had been thinking Alan could give her a life she never knew existed.

Heather Grant had moved into the papartment Dr. Jeff Webber leased for her when he hoped to bring her and their baby son Stephen Lars back from New York. - Jeff had been told that the baby died from pneumonia when Heather was ill with the flu in N.Y., but the adopted son of Peter and Diana Taylor, Peter Jr. – called P.J. – was really his son. –

Heather, who paid for the forged documents necessary out of the $10,000 settlement Peter and Diana believed had been made with the child's grandmother, had been frightened by strange, silent, and finally threatening phone calls warning her to leave town. The calls had been made by Lana Holbrook – Holden - a jealous psychotic, who was in love with Jeff, in her fashion. Dr. Peter Taylor had urged Jeff, who was determined to check into Lana's background in Canton, New York, to pretend to go along with Lana's expressed wish that he not try to check into her "sister" Lisa's medical history or the source of the report of Lisa's death, because Peter was worried about Lana's violent streak, and needed a few more sessions with her to make things clear to him. Peter had not told Jeff the full extent of Lana's hatred of Heather, but when Jeff called from Canton saying that there was no trace of a "Carrie Simpson," Lana's supposed Aunt who had signed the telegram reporting Lisa's death, or of an L. Holden, to whose account it was charged, Peter told Jeff to see him for a conference as soon as he got back.

Just before Jeff left town, he was having dinner with Heather, and Lana, overhearing their date arrangements, got into Heather's apartment, removed some pictures of Stephen Lars, and threw them out into the snow. Later she visited Heather because she had called her once and spoke as Lisa, the gentle side of the split personality phenomenon that existed side-by-side with Lana's bitter violence. She wanted to impress Heather that she had been having an attack and was calling to locate Jeff, and that Heather had been mistaken in thinking she heard the name "Lisa." While there, she took a phone call while Heather was tending P.J. and used it as an excuse to test Heather's reaction to the name Mrs. Hadley.

Against Dr. Steve Hardy's strong objections, Mark Dante had begun a final series of tests preparatory to his decision to go ahead with a highly dangerous operation on Lamont Corbin. Mark had told Lamont and his wife Katy that he would operate as soon as famous surgeon Dr. Copeland arrived to assist him, saying he then believed he had no right to deny Lamont his chance since they both understood the risks he would be taking.  Katie fantasized making love with Mark and felt guilty about it.

David Hamilton had decided to use the information he had obtained by virtue of his being at General Hospital for therapy and his insider's position in Drs. Rick and Lesley Webber's home, to offer a day-by-day, hour-by-hour report of Lamont's operation - which had been kept secret by a strict news blackout by Corbin Enterprises - to a Mr. Cates for the purpose of stock manipulation, even in the face of a warning by Cates that Hamilton would be playing in rough company and risking his life if the information should prove false. As Hamilton was on his way down from this meeting, he met Laura and Scotty - who had spent the night together in Lee's suite - in the hotel elevator. Lee was out of town with Dr. Gail Adamson on some personal legal business of Gail's – Gail was having trouble collecting her husband’s inheritance because of her ex-mother-in-law –. David told them that he would make it a point to see that he forgot the meeting if they would do the same, though they were convinced he was being kind and had no real reason to want to cover up his own presence there, as he had just been on a job interview.

Laura, who had told Lesley that she spent the night with a young nurse-in-training, Barbara Spencer who covered up for her, had lost her wallet. As Scotty searched in vain for it, a hotel maid found it in Lee's suite.

When Gail Adamson contacted Monica Webber, she learned that Monica had stayed the night with Alan Quartermaine at his hotel and that Alan had offered her the use of his hotel apartment - and room service -, and planned to make his base of operations in Port Charles. Gail expressed the hope that Monica was not building another fantasy around Alan but Monica insisted that she had changed.

Lesley got a call from the Charleston Hotel, informing her that her daughter's wallet was found in Mr. Baldwin's suite. Lesley told Rick what had happened and that she couldn't close her eyes any longer; that she had to have it out with Laura. Rick corrected her—they both had to confront Laura. Lesley was concerned that if she didn’t speak to Laura in private, she would lose the chance to be Laura's friend. Rick told her, "be her mother."

Laura told Lesley that she probably had dropped the wallet when Scotty picked her up at Barbara's that morning and she went with him to pick up something for Lee. Lesley told her that Barbara had volunteered, as part of the cover-up story, that she had seen Laura directly to the bus-stop that morning. Laura wailed, accusingly, that the last time they'd talked, they had agreed that their relationship would be one of trust but Lesley interjected "based on lies?" Scotty’s roomate, Darren Blythe, was showing interest in Laura while Barbara tried to learn more about Scotty’s future inheritance. Barbara reased and taunted Darren.

Dr. Peter Taylor , awaiting Jeff's return, had persuaded Heather to stay on overnight, babysitting, in order that Heather would have to cancel a dinner Lana had arranged with her. The following day, he warned Heather not to let anyone in and to call him if there was trouble. Heather learned from her mother, when Mrs. Grant unexpectedly dropped by, that Lana had been trying to reach her, even calling up Mrs. Grant's house early that morning and that the girl sounded "strange." Heather was preoccupied, worried that P.J. would awake from a nap before Mrs. Grant - the baby's real grandmother - left.

When Jeff arrived, Peter played the tapes he had of Lana, spliced together, for Jeff and Steve, and told them he believed that Lisa and Lana were twins who co-existed in the same body, an hysterical condition, and that what Jeff took to be the symptoms of Breechman's Disease, might be physical manifestations of a fugue state, after the loss of consciousness by one person and before the other emerged. Peter suggested that when Lisa appeared in Port Charles, she might have been fleeing from a murder Lana committed.

Eve Stapleton’s sister, Rita was learning to adapt to Eve's blindness from Blake Came Syndrome. A psychiatrist enlightened her that friends and relatives tended to smother a blind person's impulses for self-help. At the Springfield Institute for the Blind, Mr. Farrell, a blind person himself, counseled Rita that Eve's rejection for her fiance Ben McFarren was Eve's instinct Ben wouldn’t have the patience and understanding to withstand the tribulations of marriage to a blind woman. He advised Rita to give Eve encouragement to do things for herself. Ben persisted he would marry Eve. He blamed himself because the Syndrome was initiated by a fall Eve had to avoid seeing Ben with his former fiancee. He asked Eve if he were blind, would it make a difference to her? Was she punishing him? After balking at Rita's suggestion that she get her own drink, Eve conceded to Rita's insistence and succeeded at her first task in darkness. Inspired by her triumph, she made a difficult trip down stairs to Rita's apartment. Ben was hopeful because of Eve's progress. At the Institute, Ben convinced Mr. Farrell that his devotion to Eve was not out of pity or guilt. Ben recorded a tape because Eve had refused to see him. In it he admitted to some guilt. They would have to be patient with each other. It was a risk he wanted to take.

Mike Bauer had been mentally tormented by his recent discovery that his father, who was reported killed in an aircrash ten years ago, was alive! He could keep the secret no longer and decided he had to go to Bill Bauer/Moray to ensure Bill upheld his agreement to return to Springfield and tell the truth to Bert and Ed.

As a last attempt attempt to dissuade Mike, Bill answered Mike's repeated question, "Why didn't he let his family know he was alive?" The story was : Bill met Simone during business trips to Switzerland. They both realized his responsibility was to his Springfield family and even though their friendship grew into deep love, they agreed they had to part. Simone married but finally depressed by her frustrations over her alcoholic husband wrote Bill. Still loving her, Bill went to Simone to investigate any hardships done to her. There was where he was told by Simone's embittered husband, Victor Kincaid, that Hillary was Bill's daughter. Bill later gave Hillary a keepsake locket for a birthday gift. During one of his tirades, Victor tore it off her neck and hit her brutually. When Bill called Simone before changing planes, she needed him to help Hillary who was in a deep depression, locked in her bedroom for three days. Bill had called Bert, she and the boys were his contented family and so Bill's choice was inevitable. He didn't board the plane that later crashed, he went to Vancouver to help Hillary. He explained the locket as overstepping his boundaries with her "father" so Victor took his resentment for Bill out on Hillary. She was pacified, but not told in her vulnerable state about Bill. The plane crash was Bill's personal hell and his guilt drove him onto an off-and-on bender that lasted almost a year. It was Simone's devotion that saved him. As the years went on, Bill never forgot the pain he felt because he deserved to die, but it was his good friends who perished.

Mike introduced the news to Bert with the statement "It'll be difficult to under-stand, it will make you happy and it will hurt you." As the shock settled, Bert was filled with confusion. She also echoed, "why didn't he call and let us know he was alive?" She remembered how she clung to the memory of their happiness before Bill left and those memories were what gave her the strength to overcome her grief. Mike's phonecall to Bill was intercepted by Hillary, who was also confused by her stepfather and mother's reason for being in Springfield. Bill explained his "second" family, Mike's call answered Hillary's "who were they?" Simone tried to get Hillary to see past the dishonesty Bill perpetrated to the man who gave them the love and security they needed so desperately.

The moment arrived, Bert in tears, embraced Bill, ecstatic that he was alive. She demanded all he owed her is an explanation. She got just that with no excuses from Bill for his behavior. Unable to absorb more, Bert asked Bill to leave. He pleaded to let him finish but she couldn’t bear to listen to any more. Alone Bert cried profusely. Bill called Mike, regretful he came to Springfield, that the secret should have been between Mike and Bill. Then, to himself, Bill pondered that he just couldn’t reveal it all to Mike.

Hillary was the first to ask how Bill could have two wives. Simone replied that she and Bill pretended to go through a marriage ceremony for her and her brother's sake, but they knew their marriage could be in spirit only. He returned to Simone but was in such a dismal state of mind, he couldn’t answer her question if his feelings for Bert or for herself had changed.

They discussed whether Georgene Granger was really a threat to Rita. Since Rita inherited a fortune from Georgene's father-in-law, Georgene seemed obsessed with re-venge. They knew it was not coincidental that Georgene was working at Cedars, where Rita was a nurse. Georgene reassured Rita that she was there because the only way to end the pain was to experience it till it was all burned out. Rita seemed mollified by this, but didn’t know that Georgene was responsible for recent harassments against Rita. Georgene narrowly escaped exposure when Eve walked in on her spying inside Rita's apartment.

Jet-setted industrialist, Alan Spaulding had launched his new industrial park in Springfield. Adam Thorpe was Alan's general manager. Accustomed to being the dictator in all his endeavors, including his marriage, Alan was dismayed by his wife Elizabeth's recent frankness. He gave no merit to an architectural suggestion by Elizabeth, which Mike, Alan's legal aide, heartily endorsed. Elizabeth stood up to Alan, who had just labelled her interest in photography "a phase she’s going through," and protested living her life as his shadow.

Elizabeth’s first step towards becoming "someone important" was to interview for a job as photographer for the Springfield Ecology Association. Alan, as usual, was one step ahead of her and offered a healthy but anonymous contribution to the Association, which did wonders for Elizabeth's qualifications for the position. She was proud to announce she was hired on her own merit and Alan responds with innocent congratulations. Journalist Brandy Shelloe was one step ahead of Alan as she traces his footsteps to the Ecology office where her eyes landed on Alan's check—so much for "anonymous contributions."

Brandy was in Springfield to interview Alan. She was seen by Alan's friend, Jackie Marler. Jackie was unnerved at the sight of Brandy and warned Alan about her. - Jackie caught her husband Just having an affair with Brandy the day she came to announce her pregnancy. Jackie divorced Justin and led him to believe she aborted the pregnancy. Only Jackie knew that her eight year old son was Phillip, the Spauldings' adopted son. –

Dr. Justin Marler was again in love with Dr. Sara McIntyre, the woman he was engaged to in medical school, but jilted to marry Jackie. Sara was hesitant to accept Justin's proposal because her memories were still tender for her late husband Joe.

Holly Bauer had resigned herself to a life without Ed. A pleasant distraction for Holly was Dr. Peter Chapman. Paralleling Holly and Peter on the dating scene were Barbara and Max, their mother and father, respectively. Max's social life was temporarily halted when he was rushed to the hospital with an aortic aneurism. Dr. Emmett Scott believed an operation was the immediate solution while Justin prefered to withhold surgery. Justin was forced to agree when Max went into respiratory arrest. Justin was distraught by his mistake in medical judgment.

Peter allowed his past to seep through discussing his experience in the Peace Corps with Holly. He mentioned Dr. Waterman and his family, with whom he became close while in the Corps. but he still chose not to dwell on what seemed to be a sensitive nerve.

Arlene Lovett was sentenced for Ian Russell's murder and removed a day early to prison. She finally admitted to her mother that she was pregnant with Ian's child and didn’t want Doctor Tom Crawford to learn about it. She was determined to give the baby up for adoption.

Dory Patton, Arlene’s lawyer, was looking for something to support her appeal. She was convinced that Arlene blocked the moment from her mind and they only needed to learn how Ian fell down the elevator shaft to his death. Dory came up with the idea of having a doctor hypnotize Arlene to learn what happened. Tom contacted a specialist in New York who agreed to question Arlene about the evening of Ian's death. Mrs. Patton was disappointed when D.A. Merrick insisted on being present during the examination. She had hoped that she could submit the tapes to the D.A. only if they would help Arlene.

Arlene wouldn’t agree to submit, espe-cially knowing that Tom would be there, until Dory promised that she wouldn’t let them question her about anything other than how Ian fell. Dory was directed to the dispensary and learned that Arlene was pregnant. Arlene would rather spend the next 25 years in prison than let Tom learn she was carrying Ian's child.

Under hypnosis, Arlene remembered trying to shoot Ian, but dropping the gun when she was unable. Ian became violently mad, but as he came towards her he was holding his side. He brought something out of his pocket and dropped it. Arlene put this in her pocket so she could reach for Ian because he was stumbling backwards. Arlene was too late and Ian fell down the elevator shaft. Tom told D.A. Merrick that he could prove what happened, if he would go with him to find the dress that Arlene was wearing.

Mia Marriott was confused when Ben Harper ignored her for days and then showed up with several chapters of his book. A New Year's kiss gave her hope. Meg learned from Andrew, Mia's ex-husband, that Mia knew publisher Jay Edminston from the crowd she ran with in New York. Determined to free her son from Mia's influence, Meg imparted this information to Ben. He in turn confronted Mia, who insisted that Jay did read it and liked it on its own merits. Ben threw his manuscript into her fireplace in a rage. Mia burnt her hand retrieving it. Touched, Ben comforted Mia by kissing her hand, but left when he found himself responding to her.

Ben got a postcard from Betsy, his ex-wife, and learned from Cal that she wasn't skiing in the Alps alone. He dropped by Mia's and received the comfort he was looking for. Ben’s mother, Vanessa, would like to see her sister Meg closer to Andrew Marriot.

Rick Latimer was jealous that Cal was concerned about Michael Blake, their booarder. Meg tried to play on this, but Rick saw this as a problem that he created by not confiding in Cal and spending so much time away from home. Rick decided that they were ready for the baby Cal wanted last summer and was surprised that she had changed her mind because she was serious about her studies in architecture. When Meg learned of this, she encouraged Cal to stand firm about having a career. She said she admired Cal for deciding to postpone motherhood.

Michael finally confessed to Cal that he was ambivalent towards so-called "promiscuous women" because Marla, his mother, saw men behind his father's back. She was so conscious of her age, she insisted he call her Marla and introduced him as her little brother. She ran off with another man when Michael was 12.

Mayor Bruce Sterling had been promising his doctor that he would tell his wife that he was dying of aplastic anemia. He put it off over Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's, but when pressed by Dr. Joe Cusack Bruce admitted that he had no intention of telling Van because he didn’t think she was strong enough to handle this. When his condition was visible, he would be forced to tell her. Bruce was experiencing a lack of energy and attributed an unsuccessful attempt at lovemaking to his illness. He casually talked about impotence with his friend Dr. Andrew Marriott who offered some books on the subject. Suspecting that Bruce might be concerned for himself, Andrew said that usually the problem was psychological and easily corrected.

While Edouard Aleata and Charles Lamont waited for the judge's decision on who would get permanent custody of little Charles, they were able to talk together. Charles then couldn’t bring himself to tell Aleata that the judge had denied Edouard's petition for custody.

Charles had decided that it was time Johnny Prentiss, his grandson who had been staying with the Sterlings, should come home, as he had a baby nurse and a housekeeper. Bruce objected because when Lynn, their ward, left for college and he was gone, Van would have no one to care for if Johnny went home.

Lynn was sure that Charles' nurse, Mary Owens, had some secret that she was unwilling to share. Mary had come to Rosehill to find someone and one day thought she saw him at the hospital, only to find she was mistaken.

As Charles had won legal custody of the baby, he could think rationally. Taking everything into consideration, especially Felicia's desire to marry Aleata when she learned she was carrying his child, Charles decided to let Eddie raise the baby. He hid behind external gruffness when he admonished Aleata to raise the child with love.

Tom and Merrick found a pill box with Russell's initials in the pocket of the dress Arlene was wearing. Tom said Russell had seen him on the pretext of a heart condition, but he had advised Russell to see his own, doctor about his ulcer. Merrick had the pills analyzed and agreed that Russell's anger brought on an ulcer attack which caused him to stumble into the elevator shaft. Merrick would arrange to put things in motion so that Arlene could be released.

Arlene was worried when Tom commented that the starchy prison food had fattened her up, but he was sure that as soon as she was released she would slim down so that she would look lovely in her wedding gown. Dory told Arlene that she had faith that Arlene was honest enough to tell Tom about Ian's child before she married him.

Van thought that Bruce might find her unattractive since he avoided making love to her. The catch on Bruce's briefcase was broken and spilled its contents, exposing the book on human sexuality that Andrew had loaned Bruce. Andrew commented to Bruce that Van was unusually quiet. He had also noticed Bruce's symptoms of anemia and advised him to see his doctor.

Cal told Rick that Dory Patton had young children and was in partnership with her husband until his death. They must have worked together so that she could have a career. This led to an argument which ended in the realization they were only hurting each other. This led to a better understanding of each other's feelings.

One Life to Live

On Monday, January 16th, the soap expanded to 60 minutes, airing from 2:00 to 3:00.

Karen Wolek had accepted Dorian Lord's invitation to stay with her at Llanfair. Dorian was feeling lonely after her sister Melinda begged to be allowed to stay on at the private sanitarium she had been in for the past three years rather than face being under Dorian's roof and intimidated by her. Marco Dane had also implied that Dorian's offering a position as social secretary to Karen had more to do with the fact that she hated Larry Wolek and realized the humiliation Karen's living and working at Llanfair during their separation would cause him.

Shortly after taking up residence at Llanfair, Karen was back at her old pattern and was, in fact, making a compulsive play for an electrician called in to service a balky furnace at Llanfair when Larry came by to urge her to move back into their house while he took Danny and moved in for a time with Anna and Jim Craig. Karen told him she wouldn’t move back to that dreary, lonely house to satisfy his pride. Larry was also jealous of Marco's presence at Llanfair and warned Karen not to let him find out there was anything going on between them.

When Tony Lord forced a confrontation with Brian Kendall, he learned that the boy's hostility toward Tony and Pat was based on the fact that he had seen them together on Paul's birthday and wanted to protect Paul Kendall, the man he believed to be his father, out of fear that Paul would be hurt enough to give up on Pat and leave town. Tony forced Pat to tell Paul that they were lovers and Paul momentarily considered leaving town after moving out of Pat's house.

Brian ran away, finally being found by Edwina Lewis on the couch at Paul's office where he had spent the night. When Brian was returned home, Paul told him and Pat that he had decided to fly to the Caribbean to obtain a quick divorce, but promised Brian he would not move out of Llanview. Tony and Pat planned to be married immediately after Paul's return and Pat unsuccessfully tried to talk Brian into visiting the house Tony planned to buy, where he would be living with them.

In the Carribean, Paul ran into Brad and Jenny Vernon and got a glimpse of a situation where the Casino gaming tables were proving something of a rival to Jenny. Jenny, herself, saw enough - but not all there was - to experience twinges of jealousy at Brad's behavior toward the Island's attractive cocktail waitresses. Jenny was relieved that an extra long session at the tables had resulted in Brad getting even for some rather heavy losses. Brad insisted that he could then go home that night and it would be like starting over fresh.

Richard Abbott literally turned on the charm for Becky Hunt by sending her a tape recorder with an amusing message of love, forestalling all her likely protests by imitating her voice and speech mannerisms in all the places where she was likely to - and did – think up an argument. Becky left for Richard's apartment but she arrived to find Edwina making her own time with Richard, on his couch, making no effort to conceal the cozy scene Becky's coming had interrupted. Edwina went too far the following day by expressing her sympathy for the awkward situation Becky was in, but for once Becky got some of her own back by answering that when Richard came back over to her place last night, "he said I was real good about it." Humiliated to learn that Richard had hustled her off and gone running over to see Becky, Edwina asked Marco Dane to find out what he could about Becky's past. Marco agreed and tried to get Dorian to finance his setting up as a private detective. Dorian told him she would let him know.

Dorian Lord’s attitude toward Karen increasingly took on a "Lady of the Manor suffering incompetent help" tone. Karen showed some spirit but stopped short of packing up. - Dorian, by virtue of refusing to continue paying for any further resident treatment, had forced the issue and was then expecting her sister to arrive to take up residence at Llanfair. - Meanwhile, Karen had again been "shopping" with Talbot Huddleston, who, it turned out, was a member of a committee at Llanview Hospital. After picking out a fur hat to match a jacket he had previously gifted her with, Karen urged him to hurry to make up the time they had lost, as she was to have a meeting with Larry to work out their future plans. Huddleston, annoyed, put on too much speed and his car stroke a child who had run out suddenly between two cars. Horrified, Karen recognized Brian Kendall and begged Huddleston to stop. He drove on but allowed Karen to phone the police anonymously to report the incident. Just prior to this, in reaction to a remark by Brian, Pat had blurted out that Tony Lord was Brian's real father and went on to tell him the whole story. Brian was unbelieving, shocked at the thought that Kendall was not his real dad, and angry at Pat, saying that if Tony wanted to make them both happy, he should die. He screamed out that he hated her for lying to him and he didn’t want her to be his mother and ran wildly out of the house and down the streets, to dart out in front of Huddleston's car.

Dr. Larry Wolek was raving to Anna about the futility of, expecting Karen to take their marriage seriously enough to show up to meet him when he got a call from Jim asking him to tell Pat that Brian had been the victim of a hit-and-run, and had suffered massive internal injuries and a fractured skull.

When Tony learned about it from Viki, he was refused admittance to Brian's room but later, when Peter allowed him in with Pat, he realized it was because the boy is dying. After Brian died, Tony couldn’t keep in the bitterness he felt because he believed that Brian died not knowing the truth after all the times he had begged Pat to tell him. Pat couldn’t bring herself to tell Tony the truth even when he berated Will Vernon for having done enough by being party to "this deception." After Tony left, Pat told Will she couldn't tell Tony that Brian hated him at the end as Tony believed they would love each other when he knew.

Paul Kendall heard about Brian's accident and went to the hospital to learn that the boy was gone. He consoled himself that in the ways that really mattered, he was Brian's father. - Brian's last words were "where's Dad?" meaning Paul. - At Viki's, Paul told Pat that he came back from the Caribbean without getting the divorce, recalling that Brian begged him not to.

Dorian Cramer Lord had asked Karen Wolek, not too nicely, to leave Llanfair, but when Melinda did not show up on schedule, and she was not on any flight to Llanview, Dorian began to have second thoughts about being alone with her anxiety. Marco assured her it was an easy matter to cash in an airplane ticket. When Karen came down, Dorian insisted that they have a farewell drink, saying it was a mistake to hire Karen but that they had always gotten on well, socially. Unable to stop herself, she had to imply that it was a good thing that Karen would be taking up residence in the Wolek house so she could keep an eye on Cathy and Larry. Karen left in confusion. - Karen had no place else to go; Huddleston had made it very clear that she was liable for prosecution with him, in Brian's death, at least for withholding evidence, and that her marriage would be over if the truth came out. –

Richard Abbott was visiting with Mrs. Hopkins when Becky walked in with Marco Dane. When Marco went off with her, to look at the rest of the rooms in her boarding house, Richard demanded to know what Becky was doing, pointing out that she had trouble taking up with a stranger before and insisting that Marco Dane hadn't got a sterling reputation. Becky answered defensively, that lots of people had things they weren't proud of to live down, and that "don't make them bad people." Richard told her that he had been talking to the president of Marathon Records and arranged for her to cut a demo record. He insisted he wanted her trust instead of her gratitude. Becky reacted by saying that with the people around her, a person had to "give their soul away — or they're holding back." Just then, Marco came back with Mrs. Hopkins to announce that he had taken a room.

Brad and Jenny got back to hear Anna tell them that Brian had been killed and Brad said bitterly to Jenny "that's the real world you were so anxious to get back to!" The following day, Sam woke Brad up, demanding to know where he was the past evening, as she had tried to see him at the Health Club, where he had told Jenny he was going. He told her he had a belated bachelor party and wound up at a place called The Libertine. Sam told Brad that she knew where Lana's ring was ... that she saw it on Cathy Lord's finger, and that Cathy had an appointment to see their father that day. Brad showed up at the hospital cafeteria and, after obtaining a check from Will to cover his and Jenny's honeymoon expenses, told Will he needed to speak to him and asked him to cancel his next appointment. Just then Cathy Lord walked in to tell Will that she had to research an article in New York and had to leave right away. As she fumbled in her purse, she took off her glove, and Samantha realized from across the room that any moment then Will would see and recognize the ring, which had belonged to his wife, Naomi. Brad spilled coffee over the table and on Will, and, with the crisis forestalled, later told Samantha he wondered what would happen if Cathy's ring should "disappear?"

Becky Hunt met Melinda Cramer in the employees' lounge at the paper and assuming Melinda was looking for work, invited her to share coffee and lunch. She gave her directions to the personnel office and recommended Mrs. Hopkins' rooming house as being reasonably priced and clean. Melinda, after hesitating, rent a room there.

At Brian’s funeral services, Pat and Paul were together, as the boy's parents, and Tony went to the cemetary with Viki and Joe, then back to his room as Pat returned with Paul to the Riley home. Samantha admitted to Tony she had fallen in love with a man but she didn’t tell him he was the one.

Vinnie Wolek was proud that his wife Wanda had been a beer commercial spokesperson and she was offered other assignments.

Bill Woodard, confined to bed at Riverside Hospital due to heart trouble, had engaged wife Rae's secretary Royal to ascertain whether Rae was having an affair with Roger Coleridge. Royal had arranged for Roger's apartment to be bugged and gave the tapes to Bill. When Bill confronted her with his evidence, Rae started to cover, but Bill played the tape for her. Rae tried to convince Bill that it all meant nothing, that she really loved him. In his agitation, Bill got out of bed, then collapseed as he started to her. He suffered a serious heart attack, during which his heart stopped. Life-saving efforts by the staff were to no avail. Rae begged his forgiveness, but the only sign of it was a smile as he died.

Rae fired Royal as her secretary, but arranged for a job in the organization in Arizona for him. But she demanded he pay off the private investigator he hired and that she be given the originals and all copies of the tapes, as well as any other documents. Rae then broke with Roger.

Rae moved to a hotel, telling Frank she was not ready to move back to the Woodard apartment. She encouraged Frank's assistance with funeral arrangements. But even with Frank's support, she refused to cry, saying she was not ready. After a preliminary visit to the funeral home, Frank took Rae to Ryan's, aware his mother Maeve would be good for her. When they arrived, Jill was there, pick-ing up her son Edmund, whom her house-keeper had left with Maeve for a few hours. In her surprise at seeing Frank with Rae in these circumstances, Jill announced that she and Seneca Beaulac were living together.

The night of the funeral, Rae and Frank went out to dinner. At the restaurant Rae told Frank there would be no tears that night, that the evening was to be a celebration of Bill. But their celebration was interrupted by the arrival of Jill and Seneca. Both Frank and Jill insisted on not being disturbed by the other's presence, but it was difficult.

That night, in the restaurant Seneca again proposed to Jill. She again stated that she wasn't ready for marriage, for "promising away her whole life." Seneca then pointed out that their living together with love and respect was having a healthy, steady influence on Edmund, that children bloomed in the security provided by the presence of two parents. Jill accepted his proposal, stunning, then delighting Seneca.

Royal gave Rae the tapes and transcripts on the day of the funeral. However, when Rae made it clear Royal wasn't to be guaranteed success in his new job, he surreptitiously took a tape.

Pat Ryan, strung out on amphetimines, determined he had to kick it, or lose everything. Thus, when Delia, his wife, began demanding things again, Pat ran from the apartment. He went to friend Bucky Carter at the hospital. Bucky let him rest in his room. After checking out every other place Pat might be, including Faith Coleridge's apartment, Dee found Pat at the elevator as he was searching for Bucky to get some help. Feeling smothered by Dee, Pat decided to take the stairs. She continued to cling to him, and to keep from going under, he pushed her aside. She fell down the stairs. Pat immediately got help from Clem and Bucky. After many anxious hours, they determined Dee would be all right, but she had suffered a concussion. Roger, who still loved Dee, was puzzled by Dee's semi-conscious mumblings about Pat, the miscarriage, and Alicia. Recalling that Alicia had upset Dee once by calling her "Mrs. Brown," Roger asked Alicia what her connection was with Dee and the miscarriage. Alicia refused to discuss it. Roger then found out that Alicia worked in OB-Gyn before coming to neurology. Using his most charming manner, Roger went to records to confirm a growing suspicion: that Dee miscarried before she and Pat were married. The secretary in records let him see a file on a "Sheila Brown" who miscarried March 30. The description fit Dee, and also showed Dee disappeared without being discharged. Roger then knew that Dee waited until Pat had a 72 hour shift at the hospital after they were married, a time of her normal period, and faked a miscarriage.

Meanwhile, Roger had been uncharacteristically helpful to Pat. Roger made out the accident report on Dee, making it clear her fall was accidental, not purposeful. He then started to work to help Pat come off the drugs. As soon as Dee began to feel better, she started again demanding things of Pat —more of his time, a trip to Ireland, that he never leave her. Roger asked Pat to take a long close look at his marriage.

As Roger had the goods on Dee, he didn’t know what to do with it. He told the whole story to his sister Faith, once - and secretly still - in love with Pat. Faith was furious that Roger had told her, telling him she had spent many months of her life trying to push her feelings for Pat aside, that he had done her no favor by raising her hopes again. The consensus was that Pat would not have married 20 Dee if he'd known she wasn't pregnant.

Rae Woodard offered Alicia the job as her secretary, offering to double Alicia's salary. Bob Reid didn’t like the idea, telling Alicia he didn’t want her getting mixed up with people like Rae. Alicia pointed out that with that kind of money she could drop her suit against Pat and provide better for her brother Angel.

Mary and Frank Fenelli returned from Ireland, followed closely by Liam, who was searching for Tom Desmond, although Liam called him Tom O'Brien. Tom was upset to learn from Mary that she and Frank were in a pub in Limerick and saw his picture there. Liam, after unsuccessfully trying to find Tom O'Brien through Frank and Johnny, went to Ryan's and, using Tom's description, learned he was looking for Tom Desmond. Tom was spending time with Faith Coleridge, both being careful as they had recently been burned.

After Jill accepted his proposal, Seneca and she returned home. They made love and played with Edmund. After putting the baby to bed, Seneca told Jill that he had information about her that she was then ready to hear, as it was really over with Frank. Seneca told Jill that blood tests proved Edmund was Frank's son. Jill was horrified that Seneca, who had known this since last April, could withhold this information and thus manipulate her life. She pointed out that not knowing the truth affected important decisions in her life and in Frank's life. Seneca saw what he did as protecting Jill from a man he felt was wrong for her. Jill asked Seneca to leave, pointing out that he had no right to this family situation he had manipulated them into. Jill went to Frank's office to tell him the following day, but found him comforting Rae Woodard and left. Seneca pointed out that the opportune moment to tell her the truth never came up, either. Jill said she was not waiting for an opportune moment, only a time when Frank was alone. Meanwhile, Rae had told Frank that she and Bill had discussed running him for senator, rather than congressman. She said she had an organization all ready for when he said yes. – she had also reorganized the Woodard empire with herself as its head. - After a dinner at Gracey Mansion, Frank found himself drawn to Rae, but put aside her broad hints that she'd like the comfort of him in bed, and went to his office, where Jill was waiting.

After conning Tom’s address from the hospital operator, Liam bought a gun from a "man who can put his hands on things," and waited outside Tom's apartment building.

Meredith Hartford asked Stephanie Collins to the house-warming party, knowing she and Jo Vincente were enemies. That evening, Greg Hartford announced that he and Jo would be married April 14th and presented her with the family pearls. At midnight, while everyone was celebrating, Meredith was crying in the kitchen, feeling that all was lost. She was comforted by Evelyn Reedy, who had been hired to serve at the party.

Jo and Meredith interviewed for a house-keeper, but could find no one suitable. Evelyn was cleaning up after the party and Meredith suggested they ask her if she would like the position. Meredith was surprised when she refused. In private she questioned Evelyn who explained that since Mrs. Vincente would be moving in after her marriage to Dr. Hartford, she couldn’t work there. When Mrs. Vincente was in charge of personnel at the hospital, she fired Evelyn's daughter for stealing without giving her a chance to defend herself. Meredith assured her that Mrs. Vincente would never move into the house and enlisted Mrs. Reedy's help in seeing that this was true. The first step in their plan was to set up a dinner date for Jo, her father and herself. She told Jo they would all meet at the restaurant and she would use Evelyn's car. When Meredith didn’t show up, Greg called and was told that she had asked Jo to have him pick her up because Evelyn's car was not running. Jo denied this. Greg wonders what to believe when Evelyn confirmed Meredith's story. Meredith disabled Evelyn's car so that when her father checked it, he found that she was indeed unable to use it.

Jo was confused when Meredith fluctuated between being very friendly and telling what Jo knew to be out-and-out lies. She was very careful not to call Meredith a liar to her father. Jo was surprised when Meredith showed up with the satin-lined box in which her grandmother kept the pearls and insisted Jo put them in it immediately. Meredith returned at night, taking the pearls from their box and purposely leaving a red scarf bearing her name as though dropped by the desk.

Bruce Carson was becoming very bitter because Amy's residency kept her at the hospital most of the time. On New Year's Eve he met his new neighbor, Donna Davis, who became a large part of his social life. He spent many evenings in her apartment, having dinner and talking. Because Bruce rarely drank, Donna was controlling her drinking problem.

A newly-published book reminded Bruce of the past. Gail Caldwell published the book that they were collaborating on about international politics. Bruce gave her his notes when he decided to stay with Amy and his daughter, rather than leave with Gail and continue their affair. When Bruce expressed regret, Amy thought it was over his affair with Gail. Jo suggested he and Amy needed a quiet eyeing evening alone, but again Amy had an emergency. Bruce took Donna out and she could see that he was trying to prove he could have a good time even without Amy. Bruce explained to Donna the publication of this book made him feel he is a failure; Gail was a successful writer, Amy was going to be a successful doctor, and he was a reporter on a small town newspaper. Donna had a drink to prove she could stop after one.

David Sutton ran into Scott Phillips outside psychologist Carolyn Hanley's office and was ordered to stay out of Kathy's life. David explained that Kathy was not guilty of anything Scott accused her of until afterwards. David suggested that Scott take some of the responsibility for driving Kathy to infidelity. Scott had finally gotten over his anger and had decided he could accept this baby, whether it was his or David's, because he loved Kathy.

In the sanitarium, Kathy had received the rest from stress she needed to bring her blood pressure down. She was learning to cope with the stress she felt. She agreed to see Scott if Carolyn would stay with her.

David was upset after his confrontation with Scott, and he was thinking about Kathy as he drove through the blinding snow. A small boy darted out between the cars and ran in front of David's car. Witnesses told the police that there was no way David could have prevented the accident. David was even more concerned when he learned that Jamie Lawrence was an orphan who was running away. Jamie was slowly recovering from surgery, but refused to talk. David broke the barrier, explaining that he was an orphan and lived in an orphanage like the one Jamie was running from. Jamie confided that he ran away because another orphan, Kevin, was being adopted. The family had wanted Jamie until they decided on Kevin because he was younger. David tried to find out more about Jamie's mother.

John Wyatt was planning a vacation in the Bahamas with Suzi, but Stephanie Collins’ gentle persuasion got him to agree to a ski vacation in Vermont. She arranged for a suite with three bedrooms; one for John, one for Stephanie, and one for the girls.

Ellie Bergman helped Jo search thoroughly when she found the pearls missing. Discovering the scarf, Jo thought she had to tell Greg.

Evelyn told Meredith that she was wrong to take the pearls, and Meredith agreed to put them back that evening. Evelyn continued to lie for Meredith when assured that her grandson's medical bills would be taken care of in return.

Greg told Jo not to confront Meredith with this until they had more proof. Shown her scarf, Meredith said she left it at Jo's when they had lunch. Jo told Greg that she would have seen the scarf if it had been there that many days. Jo explained that this wouldn't be the first time Meredith had lied. She had not asked Meredith to find an apartment after they were married and it was not a misunderstanding.

Scott told Kathy that he loved her and wanted her to come home. He wanted to raise this child and was not concerned about whether it was his. He left reassured.

Kathy told Carolyn that she knew that Scott "wanted" to accept this baby, but eventually he could grow to hate her because the child would be a living reminder of her infidelity. She asked Carolyn to promise that a bloodtest would be taken as soon as the baby was born. She knew that there was only a slim chance that the test would prove who is not the father.

When Kathy went into labor, Carolyn contacted David and explained Kathy's request. David said he would have asked her to marry him if she had been free. Carolyn told him that Kathy intended to go home to Scott.

David learned that Jamie's mother was a farm worker and came to Henderson from California. Jamie remembered little of his life with his mother, but did tell David that he had no father. He was upset when his mother didn't return as she promised. David explained that she was too ill to keep her promise.

On the first evening Bruce and Amy had alone, Donna called to invite Bruce to dinner. He explained to Amy that he and Donna had kept each other company while she worked evenings and nights. Amy was dismayed that Bruce had not mentioned this to her before.

The Young and The Restless

Brad Elliot and Brock Reynolds had more competition as Lucas Prentiss stepped into the game. Leslie Brooks Elliot found him brash and he thought she was a snob. Lucas thought his brother Lance was too interested in Leslie for a married man.

Lorie Brooks Prentiss thought a mistake had been made when she received a $38,000 royalty check for a book she had refused to promote. When Lorie and Vanessa stopped by the Allegro after the doctor said Vanessa's face was healing so well that he would be able to finish her series of plastic surgery much sooner than anticipated, they found Brock with a copy of Lorie's book. Lorie assured Brock that Leslie would not be interested in this book. She called the publisher and learned that the book she published under another name had suddenly become popular. Brad saw the copy that Stuart Brooks was going to review for the newspaper and read it to assure himself that it was the book he destroyed several years ago. He confronted Lorie, who felt Leslie shouldn't be told because it could wreck her career as a concert pianist. Brad explained the situation to Stuart and said, as a psychiatrist, he thought Leslie should be told before she found out on her own. Lorie explained to her father that she had changed since she wrote the book, the story of a concert pianist who spent time in a mental hospital, and only published it because she needed the money. Lorie refused to agree to tell Leslie and was accused of only being concerned about what Lance would think of her. Brad again assured Stuart that it would cause more harm if Leslie was on tour somewhere by herself when she read the book and easily identified herself.

Lucas knew both sides of the dilemma. He had advised his mother, who started this chain of events out of spite when she thought Lorie wasn't good enough for Lance, to remain silent and hope the whole thing blew over. He had advised Lorie to do the same, not telling her that Vanessa was responsible.

Stuart broke the news about the book as gently as possible. When Leslie learned the contents, she expressed concern that this would bring up bad memories for Lorie. Stuart had to continue and tell her that Lorie regrets it then, but she was the author. Leslie was frantic when she learned that Lorie had written about her mental breakdown. As she calmed down, she said as far as she was concerned there had been another death in the family.

Kay Chancellor managed secret blood tests and then had Derek Thurston sign a marriage license along with papers for the beauty salon they were opening soon.

The jeweler called to ask if Derek was still interested in the diamond ring because he had another customer for it. Jill Foster took the message and assumed that Derek was then ready for marriage. This call forced Derek into a decision he wasn't ready to make.

That evening, after serving Derek much champagne, Kay told Derek that she thought they should enter this new business as man and wife. She was willing to give him the child he wanted. Women in love couldn't afford to have pride. If he didn’t accept her proposal, she would be forced to withdraw her support of the salon. She gave him more cham-pagne and then called the judge, a friend and his wife, to perform a marriage in her home. She explained that the bridegroom had been celebrating.

Derek was remorseful when he found himself in Kay's bed in the morning. She said he shouldn't be sorry for anything that happened, but couldn’t bring herself to tell him that they were married when she realized that he remembered nothing from the night before.

Jill was concerned when Derek didn’t show up for their date and she couldn’t locate him at home or in a hospital. When he got to the beauty shop, he admitted that he had too much to drink and spent the night with a woman. Jill's hopes for a marriage proposal were smashed.

Greg Foster had decided not to return to New York to practice law. He asked Snapper to visit Thurston with him to straighten the guy out. For the first time Derek admitted to the Foster brothers and himself that he loved Jill. Greg relayed this information to Jill and said he might not ask her to marry him immediately so she wouldn't think he was trying to make up. Liz was concerned about her daughter and confronted Derek with her opinion. Derek said there was one way to prove how serious he was and asked permission to propose to Jill. That evening Derek gave Jill the engagement ring.

Nancy Becker was determined to get her daughter back from the Fosters. She got a job so that she could afford the best custody lawyer, rather than going to legal aid. After hearing all the facts, Mr. Kincaid said that he didn’t want to handle the case. Ron suggested he duck out of the picture to make things easier for Nancy. This showed Kincaid how serious they were, and he accepted the case. Ron refused to accuse Snapper and Chris of being unfit to raise Karen. Kincaid said they would have to prove Ron had rehabilitated himself and Nancy was mentally well enough to care for Karen.

Chris Foster was determined that the Beckers would not be given custody of Karen. She didn’t believe that a man who admitted he was a rapist, who terrorized his own wife and daughter, could be a totally different person with no professional help. She knew that Nancy loved her daughter, but it had been so long that Karen didn’t recognize or remember her. Chris asked Sharon Ralston, who was a victim of Ron's years ago, to testify to what Ron was capable of. Sharon was to have surgery, but would come to dictate an affidavit.

Kincaid said that Sharon's testimony had nothing to do with this case since she hadn't seen him for many years. Sharon retorted that Kincaid had only seen the charming side of Ron. This was the man she met and invited to her home, but once there Ron became vicious. As she left the office, Ron arrived to see his lawyer. He expressed his sorrow over what he did to her. He explained that if it were only him, he would allow the Fosters to keep Karen, but his wife had done nothing to deserve this and he wanted her to be happy.

Snapper had doubts about what they were doing because he felt Nancy was well. Chris said that Ron and Nancy would both be raising Karen and she wouldn’t let Ron near her.

Lorie tried to tell Leslie that she was desperate when she wrote the book and they should not let this affect the closeness they had. Leslie charged that Lorie wrote the book to get recognition because she was jealous. She warned Laurie that she was sitting on a time bomb because Lance would learn of this.

Lorie decided to tell Lance before someone else had the chance. She explained everything, including that she wrote about tricking Brad into an engagement. Lance said that it took courage for her to write that. He was sure no one could be upset and insisted on reading the book.

After learning that Derek was the man who had changed his mother's life, Brock explained to Thurston that she expected a man-woman love from their relationship.

Lance comforted Leslie and promised to help her when she confessed her fear of not being able to play the piano again.

All My Children

Ruth Martin had regained consciousness after being attacked in the parking lo of the Pine Valley Country Club. She was aware that she was beaten and robbed of a diamond necklace and had guessed that the man in the ski mask was Ray Gardner but was as yet unaware that she had been raped. Because of her concussion and the possibility that she might not be aware of the sexual assault, the police called for Gardner's arrest mentioned only the beating and robbery. Rumors at the hospital had made the rape an open secret. When Phoebe Tyler, who had been persuaded to return home, though confined to a wheel chair, heard about it from Benny Sago during a thunderstorm, a door suddenly opened by the wind startled her into leaving her wheelchair. Benny promised to keep her secret so that she would not have to return to serve out the rest of her prison sentence, and she resumed her pose as an invalid.

At a second session with Dr. Polk, Donna remembered conversation between the doctor who performed the sterilization and his nurse which she had overheard but suppressed when coming out of the anaesthesia. She rushed out of the hospital and went to see Stelle. Billy Clyde confirmed the truth, and though Donna promised Stelle she would stay with her elderly friend Mrs. Flannagan, Donna did not show up. When the umbrella Stelle had loaned to Donna turned up by the river the folowwing day, Billy Clyde admitted to Stelle that he had given Donna a bottle of barbituates - he traded them for a necklace, Chuck's Christmas present to Donna -, and Stelle went to Pine Valley to tell Chuck. Dr. Charles Tyler called the police, convinced that they should drag the river.

Phil Brent had personally gone to Center City with his partner to question a pawnbroker who had reported that Gardner had tried to pawn Ruth's diamond necklace but had left the shop when the man called in to report Gardner's presence. After Phil grilled the man and he and his partner returned to Pine Valley, Philip learned that little Phil had told Tad that his father had been seen in Center City. Phil remained adamant that little Philip had to go along with Sgt. Jacoby for the clean-up weekend as a punishment for his truancy. Alone with Tara, Jacoby insisted that she should try once again to get Phil to remove himself from the case. Phil insisted that Tara not leave Tad alone with only Kate, but when Tad asked him not to leave them without a man in the house, he insisted that he was going to see Ruth and then took off on his own, looking for Gardner.

After Edna heard about Ruth's assault, she called David and insisted that he come to the cabin to protect herself and Dottie. David again had to cancel plans with Dr. Christina Karras, who had given him back his ring. When Chris returned David's call, sorry that they had quarrelled, she got a busy signal as Edna had taken the phone off the hook. Edna got David groggy with drinks and after he was asleep for some time he responded to her lovemaking, waking the following morning unaware of what had happened.

When Caroline told Frank Grant she has found out that Nancy was pregnant he insisted that they weren't living together after their separation and the baby could be "anybody's." When Caroline asked if that included him, he admitted it was possible. Frank asked Caroline why she didn't take Nancy at her word that Carl was the child's father. Caroline replied she believed Nancy was lying in order not to hurt her because she was just a little bit kinder than Frank.

Carl Blair flew in from Chicago but he and Nancy were late getting to the license bureau, meaning that Carl would have to return the following weekend, postponing their wedding plans by a week.

When it was evident that something was being held back from her and she insisted on knowing what it was, Joe confirmed Ruth's suspicion that she was raped. Word reached her that Gardner was in critical condition in a Center City hospital - he was stabbed by Billy Clyde as he was about to attack Estelle -, and Ruth wondered if Gardner's death might not solve the problem of deciding whether or not to add the charge of rape against Gardner which would mean exposing Tad to further trauma. - Phil Brent disregarded proper police procedure in going in after Gardner alone when Benny Sago telephoned to tell him Gardner had been spotted by Stelle arranging a deal to sell Ruth's diamond necklace to Billy Clyde. When Sergeant Jacoby got to SteIle's room immediately after the stabbing to take Gardner and arrest Billy Clyde, Phil was on the floor, just coming to from a blow over the head by Gardner, who had struck him with a heavy-based candlestick after Phil rushed into the room, gun in hand, unaware of the danger of Gardner's having been behind the door. - Phil reversed his position after he heard that Gardner was off the critical list and insisted to Joe that Gardner should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, including the rape charge.

Estelle went to see Billy Clyde in jail to thank him for saving her life but he turned on her for bringing in the police. Stelle laughed off his threats, calling him a cheap hillbilly and no better than Gardner.

A police detective reported to Phoebe Tyler that Chuck's car - which had been driven to Center City by Donna - had been impounded by the police there, after being left, with the keys, in a garage. Phoebe insisted she would pass the information on to Chuck so that he could recover it, but when she did, she added that the man indicated to her that he believed Donna was dead. Phoebe noticed that Claudette Montgomery was flirting with Linc and she highly disapproved.

Nick Davis was about to tell Erica, after she had been transferred to Pine Valley Hospital, that he had no intention of going through with the wedding, but a slight relapse threatened, and he delayed. In the meanwhile, Mark Dalton visited Erica and she learned about his relationship with Ellen Shephard. She phoned Ellen to ask her to visit and told her how happy she was that her brother, too, had found someone he wished to marry, and urged Ellen to disregard the age difference, as she had with Nick. Ellen pleaded a migraine - quite real; she had been suffering from strain over her ambivalent feelings - and left. When Mark walked into the Boutique, and called her "sweetheart" as she was talking to Paul Martin, she turned on him after Paul left and accused him of deliberately trying to humiliate and embarrass her, by implying in front of Paul, by his words and manner, that they were lovers. She told him she had gotten a whole routine from Erica about her "hang up."

Dan Kennicott had been fired from his job at the Zodiac Bookstore after he took off to go skating with Brooke and was caught out by his boss. He gave Devon a snow-job about his employer's unfairness and walked out on Joe when he was asked about it, calling his boss a creep and telling Joe there were plenty of other jobs available.

Carl Blair insisted to Frank, when Frank showed up at his apartment, that he – Carl – was the father of the baby Nancy was expecting, but Frank threatened to see that a blood test was done when the baby was born. Later, Nancy panicked and told Carl that she couldn’t go through with the marriage.

Another World

Rachel Cory, kidnapped by Sven Petersen, had realized that he was holding her not far from home. She was in some kind of outbuilding that contained pumping machinery. Sven had delivered his ransom demand to Rachel's husband Mac — half a million dollars. Rachel, however, decided to make some effort to gain her own freedom, so she used a milk carton to jam the machinery. Meanwhile, the Cory chauffeur, Brooks, had identified the sound of machinery in the background of the ransom tapes as that similar to the machinery in the pump house at the far end of the estate. Mac sent Brooks for the police, then, despite pleas from Brooks and Regina, the daughter of his housekeeper Helga, Mac set off alone for the pump house. Finding Rachel alone, Mac broke in the door, and they embraced. Sven arrived at that moment with a knife and swore to kill them both. He and Mac struggled, Mac finally getting the upper hand. The police arrived to find Mac pinning Sven to the floor. In the dark, they had trouble locating Rachel, who'd been pushed aside during the fray. They found her unconscious and rushed her to the hospital. There they discovered she suffered a blow to the head and was blind!

Neurologist-psychiatrist Cal Zimmerman did extensive tests and decided they might be able to help Rachel with an operation. While she lay in darkness, Rachel received visits from two interesting people — Regina, who told her the baby she was carrying wasn’t Mac's; and Mac's daughter, Iris Bancroft, who apologized for allowing herself to be duped by Sven. Iris swore to move heaven and earth to help Rachel regain her sight. Iris further promised not to interfere between Rachel and Mac again. – Since Mac and Rachel were married, Iris had tried several schemes to break them up. Her latest was to bribe Sven to keep Rachel away from Mac when they parted over Mac's inability to accept sculpture as part of Rachel's life, too.) – Mac and Rachel reconcile and Rachel agreed to the surgery. After some delay, the operation was performed. Rachel could see!

Sven’s incarceration had freed Helga, who left Bay City to return to Sweden. Regina planned to join her as soon as she could find another housekeeper for Mac and Rachel. Cliff Tanner, the father of Regina's baby, would join Regina and Helga as soon as the John Randolph case was resolved. Ada McGowan, Rachel's mother, planned to become the Cory housekeeper.

John Randolph had been in a catatonic state since the night he and Evan Webster struggled over a gun that went off and killed Evan. John's wife Olive arrived right after and accused John of murdering the only man she ever loved. Since then, the only person able to move John to speak lucidly had been his ex-wife, Pat. Cal Zimmerman felt John needed the help of a psychologist, and with Russ Matthews' help, Cal hired Susan Shearer, Liz Matthews' daughter, who'd been a practicing clinical psychologist in Boston before separating from her husband and returning to Bay City. Susan discovered that John wasn't talking, and wasn't defending himself, because he was punishing himself for past mistakes, such as marrying Olive over the objections of his entire family. Liz was furious that Susan wouldn’t discuss John's situation/progress with her.

Greg Barnard, having learned from John that Evan brought the gun the night he was killed, tried to use that information to get Olive to give more information about her involvement. ( Olive wanted to divorce John and marry Evan, but she wanted to do it in such a way as to get a large settlement and the new house they'd had Evan build. She and Evan went to Claude Kelly, who suggested they set John up in a compromising situation with another woman. But Evan had bigger plans. He and Kelly planned to murder John, as his insurance settlement would be far larger than a divorce settlement. Olive learned of the plan after Evan died. - Greg soon realized Olive was on a self-destructive path and brought Olive's sister Doris from California to take care of her. Greg also hoped to persuade Doris to help him get Olive to agree to divorce John.

Russ Matthews proposed to Gwen Parrish. Gwen was reluctant to accept, pointing out that she was very insecure about herself, the same thing that destroyed Russ' marriage to Sharlene. Russ was undaunted and won Gwen over. Gwen revealed to Willis that her father died the previous summer. She then called her mother with the news of her engagement, but her mother wasn't enthusiastic. Liz felt Russ was making a mistake, and asked Elena de Poulignac to continue to fight for Russ' affections. Elena refused, saying Russ had made his choice.

Jamie Frame, Rachel’s son, had gained Rachel's permission to stay at the loft when she went home with Mac. Jamie asked Dennis Carrington, Iris' son, to share it with them. Dennis loved the idea, but his mother absolutely forbade it, musing to herself that nobody was going to take her son away from her. Iris thus intended to ignore husband Brian's imprecations that Iris let Dennis go and grow, warning Dennis would resent her if she didn't.

Willis Frame and Alice Frame Gordon continued their love, which hurt Angie Perrini deeply. In fact, Angie wanted to avoid all reminders of Willis. Angie admitted to Vince, Willis' brother, that she didn’t want to be around him because he reminded her of Willis. But when Vince showed a willingness to talk about his childhood with Willis on the farm in Chadwell, Angie agreed to have dinner with him, to talk. Willis was furious when he found out, not to mention a mite jealous. So, that night when Alice told him she wanted a divorce soon from husband Ray so that she and Willis could share their lives fully, Willis said there was no hurry. Next, when Alice suggested they have a dinner for Vince so she could get to know him better, Willis suggested they invite Russ and Gwen, having learned of their engagement. When Alice extended the invitation, she suggested Vince bring a date. He invited Angie, who was reluctant, until Vince told her she was the wife he wanted for Willis, and he would help her fight for him, if she wanted. Angie accepted the invitation. They were the last to arrive. Willis left.

Mac and Rachel arranged for Cliff and Regina to be married at their house before the newlyweds left Bay City.

Despite Iris’ objections, Dennis moved in with Jamie. Everyone else applauded the move. Iris threatened to cut off Dennis' allowance, hoping to bring him back. On Rachel's advice, Mac decided not to give Dennis an allowance, so Elena gave Dennis a job at the Gallery. When Elena told Iris, Iris lashed out with fists at Brian, who let her work out her anger. - Iris was afraid Dennis wouldn't need her anymore, and was feeling guilty because her first husband, Eliot Carrington, had custody of Dennis for years, precluding Iris' mothering Dennis when he was young. –

Susan began to make progress with John, finally getting the story of what happened the night Evan died. Meanwhile, recognizing Olive was in a very bad way, Doris Bennett, Olive's sister, allowed Susan into the house. Doris revealed Olive had a history of breakdowns, which prompted Susan to beg Doris to let her or someone else help Olive, none of which could occur without Doris' permission. When Olive continued to deteriorate, Doris asked Susan for help.

Willis avoided Alice after walking out on the dinner party. Alice visited him and asked him to make up with Vince. Angie told Vince she wanted to back out of their arrangement, but Vince offered Willis' leaving Alice's as proof that their plan was working. Willis warned Vince to stay away from Angie and stay out of his life. Vince refused. Willis' confusion over who he really loved continued.

Karen Parker had left the hospital without her physician's permission, and although Dr. Bob Hughes was afraid she might have a relapse, Karen was such a reluctant patient that he did not pursue her. Karen sought Bob out to tell him that she was recuperating at the Spencer Hotel and asked him to dine with her. Over dinner she explained that she was engaged, but broke it off and would like to remain hidden awhile longer. Karen remained a mystery, telling only her name. Bob was attracted to her.

Sandy Thompson noticed that her husband had become restless and wanted them to travel and party with friends he had several years ago. Kevin had put all this behind him once before after he had a serious skiing accident. Sandy pretended to enjoy the parties until she and Kevin were spending very little time alone together. She explained that she was tired and realized that he was trying to fight his feelings for Susan Stewart. Unable to face this, Kevin visited some friends, but when he returned home he found a note from Sandy, saying she had gone away for a few days to think things over.

Mark Lewis was well enough to be released from the hospital. Since he couldn’t get into a college in Oakdale in mid-term, he returned to his school in Ann Arbor. Mark hated leaving Susan and she was going to miss her friend. When Mark's doctor, Alexander Keith, helped Susan through the weekend when Mark's life hung in the balance, she began to see him in a different light. Kevin visited Susan to see if he really was attracted to her, and she told him she was interested in someone else, Alexander Keith. After admitting this to herself, she told John Dixon, who always brought out the worst in people, that she really felt she had a chance with Alexander.

David Stewart tried to ignore John's insinuations that Keith was after his daughter-in-law, but David worried when Alexander brought her into their conversation. Alexander asked Susan if he might confide in her, since she was the only one who would listen. He told her that he lost the woman he loved before because he didn't speak up and wondered if he should make known his love for a married woman then. Susan was startled to hear that it was Kim Stewart.

Keith left town without telling Susan, putting her in a destructive mood. When Kevin explained that Sandy was away and he wanted to see her, Susan asked him over, telling him he had to decide between Sandy and her, because he couldn’t have them both.

Betsy Stewart became very depressed over a friend's problem. She explained to Kim and Dan that Doris found out from another friend that she was adopted and was hurt that her parents lied to her. Dan asked advice from Kim and his parents as to whether he should tell Betsy that he was her father rather than her uncle. Ellen agreed that she waited too long to tell Dan that she was his real mother. Remembering his reaction, Dan decided to tell Betsy when Betsy revealed that Doris had run away. Later Doris was found at her grandparents'. Betsy was relieved when Doris and her parents came to a better understanding. Dan felt the urgency was gone then and he could pick the appropriate time to tell Betsy. John Dixon happened to hear of Betsy's reaction to Doris' problem and told Susan that Dan was in trouble again. Worried that he might be looking for revenge, Susan told Kim that John knew.

John was still causing problems for Mary Ellison. He suggested that he not move back to his apartment and then said he had to. Mary explained to Ralph Mitchell that she refused to uproot Teddy again. Ralph suggested that she was attracted to John and wouldn’t give up on him, even though she knew he was no good. Mary asked John to move and he agreed.

Jane Spencer asked her son to join her in managing the Spencer Hotel, causing a rift between Beau and Annie. Beau said Jane and Annie were tearing him apart. Annie said she only wanted him to make up his own mind. Beau told his mother that the only thing he wanted was his law career, and he had to work hard the next few weeks for the bar exam. He could give her advice occasionally, but he was going to be a lawyer. Jane called him that same evening with a problem.

Grant Colman and Valerie Conway had been fighting their attraction for one another since he reconciled with Lisa, but a sudden snowstorm threw them together. Rather than spend the night at Valerie's farm, Grant rode a snowplow to town and arrived home half frozen. Nancy Hughes would like to see Bob dating Valerie again and planned a dinner party for the night Don and Joyce were moving to their new house. Undelivered furniture sent Don and Joyce to his parents where Joyce made a scene. She suggested that Bob and Valerie should announce an engagement. When they tried to save Valerie from embarrassment, Joyce only became indignant, saying she had never been welcome and Nancy was glad to be rid of her. Bob admonished Joyce and had to apologize the following day. Joyce said she then knew what was going on and why Grant was so embarrassed. Bob and Grant feared Joyce would hurt Lisa, so Grant planned to tell her himself. He was saved when Lisa mentioned that Joyce came to the house and accused her of being attracted to Bob. Lisa explained that she set Joyce straight. Lisa noticed that things hadn't been the same recently and confided in her mother that she didn’t know what to do because she honestly didn’t feel she was at fault this time.

Tom Hughes had tried every way he could think of to put enough pressure on Jay Stallings to find out the truth of what happened the night Pete Larsen was murdered. Jay finally admitted he picked up a girl who was passing through, but didn’t remember where they went. Jay asked Tom why he had his gloves and took them with him. Tom remembered that Melinda Gray had delivered these to him thinking that he had left them at her apartment. After establishing that the gloves were Jay's, Tom came down on them both. Jay still refused to use Melinda as an alibi because his wife Carol would leave him for good this time. Seeing how serious Jay was, Tom decided to leave it in his hands, taking the cue from Jay. Testimony from Jay had amassed, showing that he was furious with Larsen for stealing from him. Tom established that Jay was only there a few minutes and left Larsen completely clothed. - Larsen was found in his robe, wet from the shower. - Jay testified that he couldn’t remember where he stopped for coffee or a beer. After Dick Martin's careful cross-examination, it looked bad for Jay. Tom said he had one more chance when Tom asked questions on redirect examination.

Kevin called Susan, asking to come over, and was told that she didn’t want to see him. He arrived later in a very drunken state. Knowing what that was like and remembering all the times Kevin cared for her, Susan took him in. In the morning she forced black coffee down him before he went to the cabin where he had suspected all along that Sandy might be. When she returned to town, Sandy asked Susan to leave Kevin alone.

Dan was worried after his talk with John and decided not to put off telling Betsy. They kept her home from school so that Dan could take her for a ride to be alone with her. Taking advantage of a sheltered bus stop in a downpour, Dan told her that he and her mother felt it best not to tell her or his brother Paul that she was his daughter. He assured her that he always had and would love her. Betsy wass stunned and when they got home, she went to her room. Kim tried to comfort her, but she said she was not coming downstairs.

Bob brought Karen home to dinner and was surprised when his mother learned more about her in one evening than he had in all the time he had known her. Nancy mentioned the dinner to Lisa and told her how much she liked Karen. Lisa was still determined that Bob and Valerie should get together so she made a point of telling Valerie that Bob was seeing someone else, but added if she expressed a desire to see Bob, she was sure that Nancy would be on her side. Valerie told Bob about her conversation with Lisa and said she couldn’t go on much longer. She never tried to take Grant from Lisa when they were happy and felt she and Grant had in no way behaved badly. She explained that she sometimes fell that she wanted to tell Lisa that she was in love with her husband and was sure that Grant had deep feelings for her.

Tom asked for a continuance when Jay said that he would change his testimony, but had to tell Carol the whole story first. Carol was stunned, but believed that he only had dinner with Melinda at her request because they were at odds. In court Jay explained that he told Larsen that he had two days to come up with part of the money he had stolen and then went to Melinda Gray's. He arrived at 6:20 and stayed until 8:45. Melinda confirmed that Jay arrived at 6:20, insisting that she let him in and fix dinner. She testified that he left at about 8:45. Since the argument during which Larsen was killed was heard at 6:30, Jay was acquitted, but Carol ran from the courtroom after hearing Melinda's testimony. She refused to let Jay into their apartment or talk to him through the door. Tom forced his way into Melinda's apartment by telling her he couldn’t say what he came for in the hall. Melinda continued to insist that she did not invite Jay to dinner, but Tom said that he believed Jay this time. He wanted her to tell just Carol the truth because she owed her that much. Melinda stood firm on her lie.

Don Craig’s campaign for the state senate was affecting his relationship with psychiatrist Marlena Evans. The two of them had been living together, happily. Don had proposed to Marlena, who had refused, but Don understood that her recent troubles with her sister - Samantha had Marlena incarcerated in a sanitarium under her name - had given Marlena identity problems which would not be helped by becoming Mrs. Don Craig. Managing Don’s campaign, Jim Bradley then pointed out to Don that the people of his constituency were rather old-fashioned and didn’t understand his adult relationship with Marlena, a fact which could cost him the election. Thus, Don moved back to his own apartment, regretfully.

Doug Williams found it intolerable waiting around for the judge to decide whether to issue him a new liquor license. Therefore, he accepted a job on a Caribbean cruise ship as an entertainer. Julie, his wife, was unable to bear the idea of being separated from Doug again. Doug convinced her to turn over the running of Doug's Place to Robert LeClair, their maitre d', and accompany him. Julie joyously shopped for cruise clothes and made arrangements for Doug's daughter, Hope to stay with Maggie and Mickey Horton. However, on the day they were to leave, Dr. Neil Curtis stopped by the apartment and informed them that Robert had been hospitalized with double pneumonia. Doug went on the cruise and Julie stayed behind, hoping to join Doug later. But Robert's recovery was slow.

Larry Atwood, the person responsible for Doug's license being rescinded, and Doug's being questioned about drugs that were planted in his dressing room just before the hearing to regain his license, lured Julie to his studio one night with the suggestion that he had news from some of his sources about Doug's license. Reluctantly Julie went, and became anxious when Atwood insisted they shared an elegant dinner before they talked. Finally he admitted he had no real news, but told Julie he could insure Doug would get his license, if Julie would become his mistress! He told Julie he loved her. She refused to listen and rushed out of the studio. Meanwhile, Jeri Clayton, who was in love with Atwood and was miffed because he broke a date with her that night, observed Julie's arrival.

Shortly thereafter, Mickey received word from a reliable source that Doug would not be granted his license. He had to tell Julie, who told Doug. Determined to return her life to some semblance of normality, Julie called Atwood and agreed to meet him at the studio, "just to talk."

After being stuck in the elevator with Marlena for a number of hours, time during which he revealed a great deal about himself, Fred Barton was haunted by Marlena's message that only through therapy and finding the deep sources of his anger would he walk again. He made a tentative call to Marlena, which prompted her to remove herself as Mickey's expert psychiatric witness in Bill Horton and Kate Winograd's defense in Fred's malpractice suit against them. Marlena felt that her time with Fred in the elevator constituted a counselling session. - Fred fell down a flight of stairs in pursuit of his wife, Jean, who was leaving him after a try at reconciliation. Jean had left Fred because he beat her. Fred was rushed to the hospital, and later was rushed into surgery. The second year resident who was to do the operation panicked and ran from the OR. Bill Horton, not board certified for surgery, although he'd been a practicing surgeon before his brother shot him and damaged his arm, performed a life-saving brain surgery on Fred with Kate's help. Subsequently, Fred suffered hysterical paralysis and sued the two doctors. - Having gained some insight from Marlena, Fred found he could walk. He called his attorney the day the case went to court, hoping to call it off, but Langford wouldn’t listen to him. Fred was late to court. During a brief recess after Jean left the courtroom because she was unable to stand Langford's castigations of people who saved Fred's life, Fred showed Langford he could walk. Langford warned there was a million dollars at stake, but when court resumed, Fred walked in, causing the case to be dismissed.

Bill’s troubles with Fred were over, but his troubles with wife Laura weren’t. Bill was infatuated with Kate, who was finding it more and more difficult to resist his advances, admitting to herself that she might be falling in love with him. However, Kate was very determined not to be the "other woman." She insisted to Bill that it was just too painful all the way around. When the malpractice suit was dismissed, and the second-year resident, Rick Stevens, told the truth about walking out of the OR, Bill and Kate were reinstated on University's staff. Kate, however, accepted another job in Cleveland. Greg Peters, chief of staff, expedited Bill's surgical certification. In a final meeting with Kate, Bill finally admitted that his attraction to her was probably due to their being thrown together so much over the suit, and that he really did love Laura, although he had a lot to make up for and hadn't moved home yet.

Bob Anderson told Linda Phillips that he loved her, but felt unready for marriage. Linda put up a good front, pretending to be happy to wait until Bob's ready, but was secretly furious. She was further upset when Bob promoted David Banning to be her assistant. Linda didn’t want to share her power as Bob's executive assistant, having just arranged things so that her power was equal to his in the company. When David chafed at being little more than a "go-for," Linda suggested to Bob that David be made assistant general manager at a plant 75 miles away. Bob accepted her idea. While Linda and Bob were spending a cozy weekend together at Linda's apartment, Linda's daughter Melissa returned unexpectedly from a friend's house. Linda managed to get Bob out of the apartment without Melissa's knowing he was there, but his great reluctance to leave gave Linda a new approach. She began to turn down dates with Bob, explaining she had to spend more time with her daughter and also set some kind of moral standards for her.

David found it difficult to find time to discuss his transfer with wife Trish. He realized it would be hard on her, moving so far away from their families and also having to give up her job singing at Doug's place. David kept putting off giving Bob an answer. He was then summoned by Laura Horton, Trish's psychiatrist, who pointed out that Trish was having doubts about her identity. Laura suggested regular therapy. Thus, David decided he would turn down the promotion. But when he arrived at home, he found Trish had taken their son Timmy and left him, leaving a note saying she needed time to find herself. Trish had been unable to believe in his growing love for her and was confused by her continuing feelings for Mike Horton. Everyone was stunned. Even David's mother Julie lashed out with uncharacteristically harsh invective, seeming more upset that Trish got the money to leave by singing at the club, than that Trish took her grandson. Mickey helped David get in touch with a private investigator, who pointed out that the incidences of young housewives running away were rising.

Walter Griffin and daughter Patti decided together to move back to Chicago. Patti told Mike Horton that she loved him, but she was going with her father.

Julie arrived at Atwood's studio, again observed by Jeri. Atwood professed his love for Julie, but when she tried to appeal to that love as the reason Atwood should get Doug's license for him, Atwood refused. The only payment he would accept was Julie's body. Julie unleashed a tirade of loathing, simultaneously guessing Atwood was behind their troubles. Atwood showed Julie a bust of her he was working on, saying it was the embodiment of all his feelings for her. Julie destroyed the bust, enraging Atwood, who raped her. Julie felt dirty. After a futile attempt to reach Marlena, Julie retreated into depression, avoiding everyone. Ironically, notification that the judge ruled in Doug's favor arrived the following day. Meanwhile, Jeri had told Atwood she was quitting. He reminded her he had an exclusive contract; thus, she would be unable to work in any unionized club. Meanwhile, cruise director, Helen made a pass at Doug.

Don proposed to Marlena again, romantically, sincerely, passionately. Marlena still couldn’t accept. But after they made love, Marlena proposed to Don, saying his love was more important than seeking her individuality.

Linda finally let Bob know that they couldn’t remain lovers outside of marriage. Bob stomped out. Chris, meanwhile, had been fending off both Linda's and Mary's demands he accept the job as head of research and development. Chris told Mary he would advance at his own pace. But when Bob offered him the position, assuring Chris he was accepting no input from either Mary or Linda, Chris took the job.

Greta Powers was pregnant. She summoned the father of her baby, Billy Aldrich, who was angry at being called away from his family while his brother Erich was so ill. When Greta told him the news that he was about to be a father, Billy calmed down. As he and Greta assessed their situation, Billy and she decided the best option was abortion. Billy suggested Greta discuss her situation with her mother Maggie, but Greta refused, saying she didn’t want to lose Maggie's trust. Greta decided to go out of town for the abortion, since the doctor who confirmed her pregnancy knew her identity. Greta's friend Judy arranged for Greta and her to spend intersession with Judy's cousin in Springfield, telling the Powers' it was a ski holiday. Greta was haunted by the possibility that she could die, since an abortion is a type of surgery. She kept her appointment, but couldn't go through with the abortion. Billy was incredulous when she told him. Greta suggested they get married, but Billy pointed out that that idea was foolish: he was in college and only 19; she was in high school and only 16. Billy felt they'd ruin their futures by marrying and refused. Greta wouldn’t let go of the idea, until Billy told her he would never see her again unless she got the abortion. Greta promised to make the appointment.

Erich Aldrich had to undergo open-heart surgery to remove two obstructions in his heart called Bundles of Kent. His surgeon was Colin Wakefield, a pediatric cardiologist from Duke University. Erich's parents, Steve and Carolee, had not been able to establish any rapport with Colin, feeling he was too brusque. Sensing the antagonism towards him, Colin invited Steve to scrub and observe. Steve refused. During the ensuing conversation, Colin revealed he lost his child on the operating table, and thus knew what the Aldriches were going through. Colin rehearsed the surgical team. Finally, it was time. During the surgery, Colin suspected there was a third bundle. They had to stop the pump briefly while Colin used a mapping probe to locate it. Colin found the bundle, then looked up to see Steve in the OR. The Aldriches had been frantic because of the length of the surgery. Colin excised the bundle, and the surgery proceeded to closure. Erich survived.

The success of this delicate and unusual surgery had brought great publicity to the hospital. Aware that Colin's presence as a staff member could allow him to add a top-rate pediatric unit to Hope, Matt offered Colin a position. Matt's son, Mike Powers, was furious that Matt had made the offer, as Mike knew his girlfriend Sara Dancy was once in love with Colin. Matt pointed out that he couldn’t let his son's love life dictate policy decisions at Hope. Sara and Colin had met from time to time. Sara told sister Nola Aldrich that she had spent two years getting over Colin, but his presence had her on the verge of dredging up those suppressed emotions. Although Sara had strong feelings for Mike, she had refused to marry him, pointing out that she was enjoying her independence, after having been taken care of all her life, first by her parents, then the Peace Corps, then her parents again. Nola told husband Jason that she thougt Sara was going to be hurt.

Tom and MJ Carroll had worked together to overcome Tom's child abuse syndrome. They sought help through Parents Anonymous, and Tom had come to understand and overcome his problem. He was working for the state education board on a research project, which kept him away from MJ a lot, but the job would soon end. Steve asked the possibility of his returning to teaching - Tom had given it up, not trusting himself -, and Tom admitted he might be ready to give it another try.

Matt and Maggie reconciled physically.

Nola Aldrich was enjoying the social stream her mother-in-law was trying to introduce her into. Jason refused to see the importance of all the socializing, but his mother Mona Croft insisted it was important to his career. Mona also suggested it was a little difficult to introduce Nola into things, as many of the social lions knew Nola's background. - Nola was the daughter of Mona's former housekeeper. - Jason accepted the socializing because it made Nola happy. During a party planned by Mona, socializer Hugh McClosky asked Jason to run for the state supreme court.

Billy accompanied Greta to see Dr. Partnell at the free clinic. Despite her fantasies about forming a family with Billy and their baby, Greta agreed to an abortion. Both Greta and Billy were shocked when Dr. Partnell informed Greta she had to have her parents' signature for the abortion, since she was underage. Greta put off telling Maggie, who had been invited to Washington to testify regarding needs of inner-city health care facilities. Greta told Maggie that what was bothering her could wait until Maggie returned in a couple of weeks.

Mike reiterated his proposal to Sara, who promised an answer in two weeks. Colin revealed to the Aldriches his child died as the result of an auto accident. Sara told Colin she had no intention of becoming involved again, as he's still married. Doreen Aldrich, Jason’s ex-wife, realized that Colin was living in the same building as she was.

Virginia Dancy was sad when she and Barney lost their chance at buying the candy store they were hoping to acquire. Nola allowed Mona to turn a party to celebrate Nola and Jason's marriage into a social event. Nola agreed not to invite her family. Jason was reluctant to attend, finding the guest list contained names of people he definitely didn’t admire.

The Edge of Night

As an unofficial police decoy, red-headed Deborah Saxon had been captured by a deranged cop — who was also the Block Street Murderer! Officer Vinnie Ryerson's psychopathic personality emerged when he grabbed Deborah, sounding off that as a red-head, she was not human; all redheads were tramps. It was in their blood. He was helping the human race by getting rid of redhead garbage. Detective Steve Guthrie found him and talked to him as Vinnie pointed his gun at Deborah's head. Deborah's partner in the stakeout, Calvin, jumped Vinnie from behind deflecting the gunshot aimed at Steve. Case solved! Calvin received a verbal slap on the wrist by Chief Marceau for involving Deborah, then a promotion to join Steve in the ranks of detective.

Deborah’s success in police work had placed her in the Monticello limelight. Her father, Tony Saxon, also a wellknown – political - figure about town, was furious at the risk Deborah put on her own life. She placated him quickly by asserting to his new wife, Geraldine Whitney, if he was one-tenth the husband that he was a father, Geraldine had herself one terrific guy.

Tony’s newest associate was not the devotee Deborah was to the mighty politician. Raney Cooper had anonymously tipped Steve about a bank account under an alias which belonged to Tony. He continued his leak of information, notifying Steve the abundance of money that passed through this account was transferred to Swiss accounts. Steve questioned Tony about any impropriety in this matter, and by doing so, alienated Deborah and put a halt to their romantic relationship.

Steve rapidly rebounded from Deborah's rejection and made a date with cute and cuddly Maggie, secretary - and occasional date - to Logan Swift, Monticello's swinging Assistant DA.

Raney turned the tables on a would-be mugger, recognizing him as a former hit-man for the syndicate. Grateful Raney didn't kill him, this ex-con, Chip, took $100 from Raney - out of Tony's cash box - in return for a favor. Raney assured Chip he was going straight as Tony's employee because some day he hoped he would be Tony's son-in-law.

The facts April Cavanaugh wanted so desperately to keep from her fiance Draper Scott were common knowledge to all who knew and loved April. She was disturbed that Draper talked to her cardiologist, Dr. Bernham, and found out her chances are 50/50 that she would live through her heart surgery. Anxious to get on with her life unburdened by a marred heart, April requested immediate surgery. A constant irritant to April had been her sister-in-law Denise. Denise was panicky because April was told the truth about Katharine Dane's death. - April met Charlie, the hospital electrician. He recognized her from the days he worked at the Claremont Hospital where her brother Miles was Chief-of-Staff. Charlie swore he was blamed by Denise, a nurse at the Claremont, for faulty wires on the patient call board. He insisted Denise let Katharine, Miles' flirtatious patient, die by ignoring her call for help. Charlie was fired because of the cut wires she created for her alibi. –

Before April’s surgery, Denise sneaked into April's room and threatened her. If she breathed one word about Katharine to Miles, it wouldn’t matter if April died on the operating table, as Denise had the power to snuff out April's life right then. April had Miles and Draper guessing when the surgical nurse reported that while under anesthetic, April mumbled the name "Katharine Dane." The surgery was a success and April survived! While April's loved ones celebrated her recovery, Denise had plans to curtail it. Using a miserable headache as an excuse to get her hands on medication, and failing to get it from Miles, Denise scored with her father, who rewarded her dramatics in the headache department with a renewed prescription for Venetrol - lethal if taken in large doses -. Still heavily sedated, April was confused, thinking Denise's threat was a dream. Denise returned and confirmed April's doubts. She asserted the sooner Katharine Dane became a memory, the better off they would ALL be. April had to solemnly promise her silence to Denise. With April's word on her side, Denise tracked down Charlie.

Having failed to bribe Charlie for his silence — he ripped up her check — Denise neatly solved the problem by slipping her Venetrol into Charlie's coffee. She spied on Miles and Nicole sharing a drink together. When Nicole exited, Denise took her place at Miles's table. She informed him she would not leave the comforts of her home to live with Miles in Monticello. This, however, didn’t give Miles his freedom; she wouldn’t allow Miles to see Nicole ever again. Miles retorted it was Denise's choice to live apart, and he would do what he wanted and see whoever he wanted. Before Denise could offer her usual sarcastic objections, Miles' co-workers at the clinic Dave and Tree came in. They were obviously upset by the death of a patient — Charlie Richmond. When the coincidence hit Miles, Denise staged a convenient fainting spell then invited herself to spend the night with Miles.

Miles tried to connect the recurrence of Charlie with April's mentioning Katherine Dane. He questioned if Charlie's termination was justified, then found the Venetrol bottle in Denise's purse with one pill remaining!

Nicole Drake and her newborn son Adam were adjusting well to their new life in Monticello. Nicole's baby nurse, Mrs. Goodman, spoke freely about the obvious nervousness in Nicole prior to seeing Miles again. This would be their first meeting since Nicole left the Claremont, where she and Miles spent five months waiting out her high-risk pregnancy. Miles commented that becoming Nicole's neighbor was one of the good things that had happened to him lately. His footsteps barely had time to fade when Denise was retracing them. She made no bones about her jealous possessiveness and demanded that since Miles was no longer Nicole's doctor, there was no need to keep in touch. She reported back to Miles that she just visited his "Monticello Attraction," minus her warnings, of course. - While Nicole slept after Adam's birth, Miles admitted his love to her. - Together again in April's hospital room, Miles confided to Nicole "when happiness isn't continuing, there's no other choice but to have it end." He confirmed there was nothing left between Denise and him. Nicole wanted to evade the topic, but when April's request that they kissed each other since she couldn’t do it herself, turned into a lover's kiss from Miles, Nicole responded passionately.

Miles later confided to to Dave he was not sure he wanted Denise. Dave enlightened him that Miles was obviously in love with Nicole, and she obviously felt the same way.

Nicole was giving serious consideration to the job offer as a TV commentator for consumer protection, passed on to her by Nancy Karr. She passed the audition test and was hired at WMON TV.

Raven Jamison had earned the title of "lemon in the garden of love" from her former lover Logan. Logan came to his senses when he realized that even though she had Kevin for a husband, and Logan himself as an extra-curricular lover, she still had designs on Draper.

Raven shook up April's faith in Draper's committment by calling his request for marriage a "deathbed proposal." Draper reassured April his intentions were lovingly sincere and they set a wedding date. Raven tried every excuse in the book to postpone the April 7th wedding.

Geraldine Saxon found it necessary to correct Raven's criticism of Kevin's "weakness" to "gentleness." Kevin had strong views that the Crime Commission was looking the other way when it came to crime in high places. He threatened to publish his opinions and got kicked off the Commission. Without that position, Raven's expectations for Kevin's political career – and hers as a politician's wife - were all washed up. Raven used vivacious persuasion to convince Kevin to rip up his written report for the press.

Tony forbade Deborah to take the Police Academy Entrance Examination, then Raney advised him that he should worry about trouble that could arise from the resignation of Morris P. Jackson, manager of his uniform company.

Viola Brewster told Jason Saxon that if he didn't stop his affair with her daughter Laurie Hamilton, she would use her influence with Edith Cushing to have him fired from Cushing and Sons. Knowing that position for Laurie in a wealthy family was important for Viola, Jason suggested that Desmond would learn of the affair. Laurie was thrilled when Desmond found a lovely home and agreed to put a deposit on it. She felt she had always been under her mother's thumb and this would give her some freedom. While Laurie and Desmond talked of moving from her home, Viola clutched her chest in pain. She refused to go to the hospital and the doctor was called to the house. He prescribed rest for Viola's symptoms when tests showed nothing. Laurie was frantic and told Jason that she had to stop seeing him for her mother's health. Jason suggested that she made sure that Viola was really on the verge of a heart attack. Returning home, Laurie found a medical book with the symptoms of heart attack underlined and her mother up and around. Laurie confronted her mother and cried, explaining that she was in love with Jason and couldn’t give him up. Eager to keep her daughter's marriage intact, Viola agreed to help keep her affair a secret. Laurie wanted to bring everything into the open, but Jason said they couldn’t then because of her career.

Connie Ferguson had succeeded in stopping Bill Sutton's marriage to Megan Cushing, but had failed to get him to marry her. She got pregnant deliberately and then had resorted to a suicide attempt with plans for Bill to find her shortly after ingesting sleeping pills. Lee Ferguson, privy to her plans, returned to find that Bill didn't read her note and Connie was unconscious. Connie developped a respiratory infection and then went into premature labor. Bill was by Connie's side in the delivery room to calm her when she went into cardiac arrest. Her heart was started again and she gave birth to a son who was whisked away to the premie nursery.

After the birth of her baby, Connie's condition worsened. Trying to give her something to live for, Bill proposed and told her he would make plans for an immediate wedding. George Kimball set about clearing all the obstacles.

Ellie Kimball mentionned to Dr. Bailin that he probably was happy that Connie had the baby instead of going through with the abortion he had set up for her. He said she had never planned an abortion. George happened to be around the corner when, in a moment of guilt, Lee confessed to Amy Cushing, Connie's best friend, that they had planned the suicide attempt to scare Bill. George let this slip to Ellie and then had to convince her that it would be best for everyone if Bill was not told.

After a shortened ceremony, Josie gave Connie a locket that belonged to her mother. At Bill's apartment, the wedding party, minus Connie, celebrated with a glass of wine and discussed readying the apartment for Connie and the baby. Ellie was preoccupied and left early. On her way home, she confronted Amy with Lee's confession, but learned nothing.

While at Mildred Quinn's, Megan Cushing saw Paco get into a car across the street. She was convinced that the "Savage Avengers" were being used by adult criminals because the young gangs wouldn’t be sent to prison. - The man who picked up Paco was Lee Ferguson. - One evening Megan and Edith surprised Paco in their kitchen. Megan felt Paco could have gotten out without being seen, and was asking for help. Edith tried to get Megan to give up writing articles on street gangs and enlisted Austin's help. She agreed to be cautious. Turk, leader of the Savage Avengers, cautionned Paco about seeing Megan, saying he was only supposed to scare her. Turk confessed that he killed Donny Quinn as an example and didn’t want her snooping around or writing any more articles. Paco asked Megan to find a safe place to meet.

Bentley told his brother Jason that Connie and Bill were getting married in the hospital. Austin was there to hear the news and planned to tell Megan later himself so the shock wasn't too great. As soon as they left, Jason rushed to the magazine to see Megan, but she was out.

Megan thought that Paco might agree to meet at Bill's apartment since he had already met him. She heard that Bill was still at the hospital and went there to get his permission for use of his apartment. She overheard the minister congratulating Bill on his marriage. Bill tried to reason with her, but Megan was too distraught.

Edith Cushing and Roger Hamilton felt that Austin had been doing an excellent job since he had been at Cushing and Sons. They agreed that although he had been able to attract clients from Jason and those who had left the firm since Richard's death, he would be more effective as a vice-president. Austin accepted the promotion and told Amy the news.

Amy went to Barbara Manners to ask why Austin was given a promotion when he was only to stay with the firm until Jason was stopped from taking over the firm. Barbara said that Austin earned it, and he seemed to be enjoying his work. Amy was sorry after she said she didn’t want Austin to wind up the same kind of man his father was. She apologized. Barbara asked if Austin really wanted to be an artist or if she wanted him to be one. - Barbara was the mistress of Richard Cushing, Austin's father. –

Connie told Lee that she would really kill herself if Bill ever found out that she had planned the suicide attempt. Amy explained to her that Ellie knew and her only chance was to tell Bill herself so that she could explain how desperate she was. Connie was sure that Bill would never forgive her if he found out. Amy blamed Ellie when the doctor expressed concern over Connie's depression and extracted a promise from Ellie that she would remain silent.

Lee – who was eyeing Tessa Saxton – gave Bentley a job in his garage, but then rushed him out because he was expecting a delivery from the Avengers. Turk was annoyed that he had to wait until the stolen car was sold for their share.

Desmond remarked to Viola that he had thought Laurie's restlessness was due to concern over Viola's health, but as she was better, Laurie continued not to be herself. Viola suggested that Laurie needed a vacation to rest and that it might be better if he set it all up before telling Laurie. She was sure that she could stay with Edith during their absence and her attack was only a warning that she had to take it easy. George was agreeable to taking over Desmond's clients while he was away in exchange for the use of his office. Viola continued to cover for Laurie, hoping that she would come to her senses and Desmond needed never know of her infatuation with Jason. Jason also continued to remain discreet, unwilling to have their affair become common knowledge.

Austin and Amy discussed her talk with Barbara. He told her that he really enjoyed stockbrokerage and wanted to put off painting for a while. Amy agreed to support his decision as she knew he actually enjoyed his work.

Dr. Jeff Webber arrived at Heather's apartment as Lana was holding Heather with a letter opener poised at her throat, trying to force her out through an open window. Jeff couldn’t reach Lana without risking Heather's life but he told her he knew all about her past and addressed the Lisa part of her character. As Lisa struggled to emerge, Lana passed out - the fugue state between periods of dominance of different personalities. - Heather saw the transformation as Lisa woke, terrified at what had nearly happened. Lisa was hospitalized at General and Peter made arrangements for long term therapy at Long Island Sanitarium with high hopes for Lisa's eventual recovery.

Lamont Corbin had come through the delicate surgery performed by Dr. Mark Dante, who noted in his diary that after Corbin regained consciousness and spoke to Katie, he put Corbin's chances for recovery at 98% positive. David Hamilton had been hanging around General Hospital all that day with a trumped-up story of wanting to see Mark about some pain he was experiencing and, noting the information in Mark's personal diary, prepared to pass it on to Cates.

The following day, Dr. Steve Hardy was beseiged by calls from members of the board of Corbin Limited, as rumors of Corbin's imminent death were published by newspapers and wire services. The stock syndicate David Hamilton was supplying information to was buying up stock in small batches, relying on Hamilton's information that Corbin's condition was stable, the opposite of the rumors they had planted. Laura Webber had seen Cates and believed he was David's new employer in an advertising firm. Later, as Cates paid off Hamilton and prepared to leave town, Lesley called at David's apartment and was told the same thing.

Lesley had learned from David that Monica was the doctor who prescribed birth control pills for Laura. She confronted Monica at Alan Quartermaine's apartment while Alan was out of the room and took her to task for interfering in the lives of the Webber family "out of jealousy." She warned Monica that if she didn’t stay completely out of Laura's life, she would go to Steve Hardy and report Monica's unprofessional conduct in prescribing the pills for a girl of Laura's age without a complete gynecological examination. In the light of Monica's past record this was an effective threat against Monica's ambitions concerning the expanded Cardiac section. When Lesley left, Alan asked who called and Monica told him the maid wanted to know if they wanted the beds turned down. Alan told her he had heard everything and believed she lied to him because Lesley's belief that she was not over Rick was correct. Monica accused Alan of playing games and trying to trap her and told him she intended to move out permanently.

Barbara « Bobbie » Spencer’s actions had made it clear that she was not interested in Darren, Scotty's roommate. She had learned that his personal ambitions did not include sharing in his father's lucrative business, When Darren realized this, he walked out on her. Barbara had helped Laura prepare for a date with Scotty by restyling her hair and make-up and lending her a dress. Scotty was taken aback at Laura's appearance and refused to take her out to a night club, so Laura went home saying only that she had quarreled with Scotty. The following morning she told Lesley she had decided that she should be seeing more of people her own age. She went to see Barbara after refusing to talk to Scotty that day and saw him in Bobbie's room, drinking wine with her. She turned and left. When she called Monica and asked to see her, Monica refused to talk with her. As a last resort she phoned David's apartment but Lesley was there to help David with some decorating ideas and he too dismissed her. Laura then phoned Barbara Vining.

Dr. Gail Adamson had met Maria Schuler who had flown in from Zurich with her attorney, claiming she worked with Gail's late husband Greg on a manuscript for his most successful book, "Always Spring," but never received credit or royalties. In Lee Baldwin's office, Gail acknowledged Greg's signature on some documents setting up a trust fund from which royalties were to be paid to the woman, but insisted on seeing proof which Miss Schuler claimed to have in the form of original notes, both hers and Greg's. Privately, Miss Schuler tried to convince Gail to accept the evidence she had presented so far, saying that she wished to spare Gail unwelcome revelations in the notes. Gail refused and both Lee and Miss Schuler's attorneys agreed to meet again the following day when the notes were available. Gail called Monica, who had made up her quarrel with Alan at his apartment in the same hotel in which Maria was staying, and told her what had happened. When Monica appeared at Miss Schuler's door some time later, she was told that she was expected and that she – Monica – was exactly as Greg described her.

Lamont Corbin had quickly gone from the solicitous husband who urged his wife Katie to get away for a time from the hospital atmosphere to insisting that nurse Jessie Brewer track Katie down and "bring her back here where she belongs." He sent for Steve Hardy and Mark to announce that he wished Steve to report in an upcoming meeting of the hospital board that he intended to donate $5,000,000 to General Hospital. Katie met with Mark and told him that the money wasn't a gift, that Lamont didn’t give away anything without a good reason. She said she was sure Lamont knew about them; he sensed what was going on. When Mark asked if she was frightened, she replied she was because she had seen Lamont in action. Mark answered that one thing wasn't going to change ... she was still Mrs. Corbin. He said he intended to make things as easy as he could to pick up his life after Katie and Corbin left. Katie told him she had no intention of leaving the hospital with Lamont. She said she did not intend to go on being Lamont's possession, even a prized one. She intended to divorce Corbin when he was well enough. Mark admitted he loved Katy but told her that Lamont's convalescence had a long way to go and warned her not to speak about their plans even to Gina.

Maria Schuler had made it clear to Monica that the notes she intended to produce to verify her claim would make it clear that Greg and Monica had an affair.

When Alan noticed Monica's nervousness and agitation she refused to tell him what was the matter, but said she needed $50,000 - the sum Maria Schuler had asked to turn the papers over to Monica and return to Zurich -. Alan told Monica he would get the money but there would be a delay and offered his personal check. When it was clear that only cash was acceptable to Miss Schuler, Monica stole the envelope containing the notes while Maria was at dinner. Miss Schuler assured her attorney Herbert Berman that she was not so foolish as to keep only one copy of the notes and that she had a second set in safekeeping at the hotel and one in Zurich.

Monica was confident that the problem had been solved and offers to attend the meeting with Gail, giving Rick very little notice to replace her as his assistant in some scheduled surgery. When Maria Schuler cooly produced the notes and Lee read them, he asked Gail to step into another office for a moment and glared at Monica as he passed. He told Gail that it was his recommendation that she honor Miss Schuler's claim as she could readily see that the handwriting was Greg's and to do so without reading them. Gail couldn’t accept this and stepped back into the room where the papers were handed to her and she began to read. As Monica got up to leave, Miss Schuler stopped her.

Laura had left Port Charles with some of her clothing and without leaving a note for Lesley. Finally Lesley got a call from Barbara Vining to tell her that Laura had phoned her and then appeared at her door in Buffalo. She said that Laura did not want her to get in touch with Les and recommended that Lesley wait for further word. Barbara and her husband Jason had been divorced and their daughter Amy was living with Jason - the man Laura believed to be her father, just as she believed Barbara Vining, who raised her, to be her mother -. Barbara was living with a musician and there was very little money to spare. She told Laura that if she stayed, even for a time, she would have to help out. After Barbara went to the store to put together a meal, Laura phoned Lesley and asked her to drive up and take her home. David drove Lesley up to Buffalo and while he and Laura were getting some things Laura had left with Barbara before going to live with Lesley into David's car, Barbara told Lesley that she responded to her maternal feelings for Laura instinctively but she wanted Les to tell Laura that her call had opened old wounds. When Lesley relayed the message to Laura at a roadside restaurant, Laura said she wouldn't take advantage of Barbara again. Lesley told Laura that when she was going through her room looking for clues to where Laura might have gone, she found her cigarettes and warned her of the danger of smoking for someone on the pill. Laura reassured Lesley, telling her she no longer smoked and as they got up to join David, who was getting the car gassed up, Laura concealed the elongated purse designed to hold cigarettes in her bag with a scarf.

Bobbie Spencer had made good time with Scotty in Laura's absence and they had been sleeping together with Bobbie already suggesting to Scotty that Lee would probably help out with the finances if Scotty were to get a place of his own without Darren as a roommate. When Darren asked about Scotty's break with Laura, he learned that Laura had left town and Scotty told him that from the evening Laura arrived overdressed and made-up, he felt he didn't really know her.

Bobbie had told Lesley when Laura was first missing that Laura had been spending quite some time visiting with David Hamilton at his apartment. Lesley took the information only as an indication of how little she knew about Laura's friends, David among them. On the way up to Buffalo in David's new sportscar - the first fruits of his Lamont Corbin deal -, Lesley remarked to David that she was grateful that Laura decided to come home and she felt she had to see to it that Laura never wanted to leave again ... no matter what it took.

Diana Taylor felt uncomfortable with Heather nursing to PJ as she noticed how attached she had become to her adopted son. Heather couldn’t conceal her pain when she was informed.

Gina Dante finally told Gary Lansing she didn’t feel like marrying him. They reconciled on condition that he did not restort to ambitious career pranks.

Guiding Light

Ten years ago while Bert and Bill Bauer were apparently resolving some of their marital problems, Bert was unaware that Bill was having an affair with Simone during his business trips in Switzerland. Bill and Simone parted so Bill could fulfill the obligations of raising Mike and Ed with Bert. Simone married Victor Kincaid, later writing Bill of her unhappiness with him. During a visit to Simone, Bill learned from Victor that Hillary, Simone's first born, was Bill's child. Bill was torn between his desire to help Simone, who was in a desperate situation with Hillary because of Victor's brutality, and his responsibilities in Springfield. When an unforeseen tragedy occurred, Bill thought he had the answer to all his problems. During a stopover in Washington, Bill did not reboard a plane that later crashed. With his Springfield family thinking he died in the crash, Bill, after a relapse into alcoholism lasting almost a year, chose to live with Simone and Hillary. His solution was not infallible, however, as Mike fortuitiously discovered his father living in Vancouver as Bill Moray. Bill kept his promise to Mike and came to Springfield to confess all to Bert and Ed.

The initial shock of Bill's return had settled with Bert, but his explanations did not pardon his actions, Bill being the first to admit it. Bert asserted to him all the reasons in the world couldn’t change what they felt when he died. He had destroyed her memories. She asked if he had told her everything; he hesitantly assured her he had.

Ed had learned about his father's "return from the dead" at the tail end of a chain of divulged secrets. Ed found it incredulous and was frantic to see his father. Just seconds before Ed tracked Bill down at his hotel, Mike forestalled the confrontation. Bert and Mike wanted Ed to wait until Bill could reveal his reasons for desertion himself, but Ed's impatience forced them to explain about his "Vancouver family." Thoroughly appalled by his father's conduct, Ed ranted it would have been better if he had died! Seeking consolation, Ed visited Rita Stapleton. - She knew about Bill as she was the first one to discover his true identity. Because she had hurt Ed so badly in the past by previous secrets she kept from him, she fought her better judgment about concealing this also. Bill begged for her silence. - Rita explained her situation, sorry for not telling Ed sooner. He was disappointed but blamed Bill, resenting the position he put Rita in. Rita was greatly relieved it was all out in the open and told Ed she knew Bill had suffered terribly for what he had done. Ed was calmed by Bert's strength in overcoming this sadness. She remembered the love in their family and believed she had a right to that memory. Simone supported Bill, reminding him he had earned Hillary's love. - Hillary still did not know Bill was her real father. –

Meanwhile, Bill had missed his confrontation with Ed because he was meeting with Max Chapman, editor of the Journal. He was trying to dissuade him from printing his picture and what Max claimed was "the biggest human interest story to hit Springfield in a decade." Mike was the one who got an extra 48 hours from Max before the story was released.

Bert called to warn Bill of Ed's intended encounter. Simone intercepted the call. The few words the two women spoke were heavy with strain. Simone left Bill to tell her son Paul the story first before it made headlines. Ed, unlike Mike, was extremely eloquent in his disapproval of his father. He sumed up his verbal assault that Bill was a coward with no guts and he wished he'd never come back. As far as Ed was concerned, he didn’t care if there were untold reasons - which Bert and Mike made allowances for -; Ed had disowned his father! Bill pondered to himself "it's not over yet, there are so many things they don't know." Bill left Springfield, but his presence lingered on as the headlines ignited a flurry of curiosity in Springfield. Bert's main concern then was the rift this had caused in their family because Ed and Mike couldn’t agree on each other's attitudes towards Bill.

Although Rita’s birthday started with celebration and good wishes from her friends and family, Rita's only enemy, Georgene Granger, put an abrupt end to the day's festivities. Rita's sister Eve, recently turned blind, delivered her gift to Rita's apartment then remained there to nap in Rita's bedroom. Obsessed with the ultimate revenge because Rita received the inheritance from Georgene's father-in-law, Georgene used the key she had duplicated to enter Rita's apartment. While Evie slept, Georgene drenched the furnishings with paint thinner and set the apartment ablaze. Eve awoke from the smell of smoke but couldn’t escape. Her ex-fiance Ben McFarren and her mother were on the way to Rita's when Ben saw the smoke. He barged into the burning room and pulled Eve out. Eve regained consciousness at the hospital and was deeply touched that it was Ben who saved her life. - Due to her blindness, Eve broke their engagement. She didn't want to burden Ben with her handicap. They were still very much in love and Ben was not giving up on a future with Eve. –

Rita suspected Georgene as the arsonist when the fire chief reported a deliberate attempt was made to start the fire. Enraged that Eve almost died because of Georgene's maliciousness, Rita faced Georgene with her accusations. Georgene made a feeble attempt to deny it, and Rita threatened to go to the police. When Rita left, Georgene was scared and moved out, but vowed to herself she was not finished with Rita yet.

Rita’s own investigation of Georgene uncovered the fact she was not at work the day of the fire and she had Rita's unlisted phone number in her desk drawer at Cedars. Georgene was panicking and called her Texas lawyer for money but didn’t give out her hotel address. He forewarned Mike sensing Georgene was tense and angry — maybe going off the deep end. Mike moved fast, notifying the police to put a watch on the post office where Georgene's money would be wired.

Alan Spaulding was slowly realizing that he couldn’t buy his wife's happiness. He noted that her new job as a photographer for the Springfield Ecology Association had put a smile on her face that all his money and gifts couldn't do. - Elizabeth didn’t know Alan made a healthy donation to the Association which practically guaranteed Elizabeth's job. - Alan's confidence was jolted when journalist Brandy Shelloe revealed her knowledge of the "bribe" and if Alan's donation was to remain anonymous, he would have to grant her an interview.

When Alan’s business affairs preempted their lovemaking, Elizabeth escaped with her disappointment to Jackie Marler's. During a confidential chat, Elizabeth expressed to Jackie how the closest relationship was between a mother and her child. Jackie knew the irony of Elizabeth's statement but suffered silently through it. - Discovering her husband Justin was having an affair with Brandy, Jackie led him to believe she aborted her pregnancy and divorced him as punishment. She instead gave up her son and Alan and Elizabeth's son Phillip was Jackie's child, but only Jackie knew this. - Later at home, Elizabeth and Alan discussed exactly where they stood with each other. Her comments about how she hoped sharing a child would bring them closer caused Alan to recall the day he learned that their expected child was dead, just three weeks before he was to be born. The doctor and Alen kept this news from Elizabeth, as it would have devastated her, and let her believe the child Jackie gave birth to was Elizabeth's child.

Brandy managed to disrupt both Jackie and Elizabeth in one day. During their cut-throat conversation in Alan's office, Brandy couldn’t resist mentioning she and Justin shared the same apartment building. She also recommended Jackie read her new book soon to become a movie — it was based on real life and Justin just happened to be one of the charac-ters  ... !

Continuing her little game, Brandy slyly let it slip about Alan's donation and Elizabeth picked it up immediately. Elizabeth protested Alan's interference in her attempt "to be her own person" by quitting the job he bought for her. Alen labelled her actions childish with no concern for Elizabeth's convictions. She gave him the cold shoulder; he retaliated by leaving the house, then went to Brandy's apartment to reprimand her. He accepted her apology but still forbade her to print an article about him.

Dr. Justin Marler had tried in vain to win Sara McIntyre's love. His confession that none of his life was important until his time alone with Sara receivds a passionate kiss from her, but not her promise of marriage. He proclaimed how tragic it would be to lose what they havd together. Sara couldn’t forget the hurt Justin inflicted on her when in medical school he broke their engagement to marry Jackie. He sensed her feelings at the time had to do with her feelings then. She didn’t want to ruin their friendship. Justin interjected they couldn't go on with the relationship as it was; he wanted more.

His frustrations over Sara were interfering with Justin's responsibilities as Cedars' Chief of Cardiology. They had to confer over an emergency medical case. Sara could see the discontent in Justin but tried to overlook it. Justin had opted for immediate surgery, and Sara backed his decision. With all vital signs positive, Justin continued from the initial surgery to an additional heart valve replacement. The patient died for no obvious reasons and Justin blamed himself. Sara jumped in, assuring Justin he had no control over the failure.

Justin and Emmett had a conflict over the Bradley case. Emmett felt Justin was overwhelmed by too many responsibilities resulting in his incompetence. Justin welcomed the review by the Board giving himself the opportunity for defense, but couldn’t conceal his disappointment that Emmett was voted to replace him as Head of Cardiac Surgery. Even Brandy gave him the benefit of the doubt, asserting he was a good man and judged himself too hard. Justin swallowed his pride and offered Emmett congratulations and a trade to his administrative office.

Ben would teach at the Springfield Institute for the Blind and Eve would study Braille there. Viola marveled how Eve, with her blindness, was showing the way to her family.

Holly told Peter Chapman she needed time to get over her feelings for her ex-husband, Ed Bauer.

Love of Life

As Charles Lamont had been given legal custody of Felicia's son, he could give serious thought to the welfare of the child. After considering everything, he told Eddie that he could adopt the boy. - Eddie was the baby's natural father, but because Felicia was still married to Charles, he was the legal father. –

Eddie Aleata had spent much time with his lawyer Dorrie Patton while trying to acquire custody of his son. He asked Dorrie to bring her children to visit, but she declined. Dorrie was a widow, trying to raise her children and afraid of a close relationship with any man.

Charles’ baby nurse, Mary Owens, had decided to stay in Rosehill, taking a job at the hospital. She found a studio apartment, which Lynn Henderson envied. Mary finally confided to Lynn that she broke an engagement and was then looking for the man, whom she believed to be in Rosehill. Because he was not listed in the phone book, she placed an ad in the personals column of the newspaper, telling the man – Michael Blake - that she was in town.

Cal and Rick Latimer had finally decided to bare their souls to one another and then understood their love and goals for life. Rick arranged to take time off to take Cal to Europe for two weeks. Although their reservations were mixed up, they found the time alone delightful.

Mia Marriott was driving her friend Wendy Hayes mad with her on-again, off-again affection for Ben Harper. Just when Mia was ready to give up, Ben would get upset about his ex-wife Betsy and turn to Mia for comfort. Ben always made it clear that any intimate relationship they had couldn’t be seri-ous. Mia tried her best to hide her feelings, but frequently Ben aroused her jealousy.

Bruce Sterling’s inability to make love to his wife or to discuss it was driving a wedge between them. Van was worried that she was no longer attractive to him. When Meg overheard a conversation between them, she suggested another woman might be the problem and offered Van a shoulder to cry on. Dr. Andrew Marriott, Bruce's friend and chess partner, suggested that Bruce see a doctor because he appeared to be anemic. Bruce confirmed this and had to concede that Andrew's suspicion that he had aplastic anemia was true. Andrew tried to convince Bruce that Van had to know, but didn’t succeed any more than Dr. Joe Cusack did. Van was hurt when the topic of remarriage in case of a death of one spouse came up, and Bruce said he would remarry and expected Van to do the same.

Andrew saw that Van was depressed and disturbed because of Bruce's recent behavior. He gave Bruce an ultimatum: either Bruce told Van or he had to. Bruce was upset that Van confided in Meg and assured her that there was no other woman in his life. He took her upstairs to bed, and while holding her in his arms, he told her that he was ill and had seen Joe. His illness had been diagnosed as aplastic anemia. He had to tell her that he was terminal. Van quietly cried, trying to reject this news.

Facing the truth, Van visited Joe to find out everything she could about Bruce's condition. Joe explained that usually the chances were 50-50, but because in the type Bruce had they didn't know the cause of the anemia, the chances were 80-20. Van told Joe that she refused to accept this. She had to give Bruce hope that he was going to live, not only for him, but for herself as well. She admitted to the family that Bruce was anemic and she would be making a special effort to see that he stayed rested. Van agreed that he couldn’t run for mayor again this year, but wouldn’t accept that he wouldn’t be there to run the following year.

After the District Attorney was convinced that Ian Russell had an ulcer attack which caused him to stumble and fall down the unfinished elevator shaft, he arranged for Arlene Lovett's release from prison. Arlene took the advice of her mother and lawyer to tell Tom that she was carrying Ian Russell's child. Tom Crawford was full of marriage plans when he came to take her home, making it harder for Arlene to tell him. Tom, of course, was stunned by the news. Trying to take Tom off the hook, Arlene told him that the marriage was called off. Recovering a little, Tom told Arlene that they would still be married. Tom's roommate and friend, Joe Cusack, felt Tom was making a mistake. He said Tom needn't feel duty-bound and should not marry Arlene if he had any doubts.

Arlene told Carrie that she had come to the conclusion that the only possible solution was to give the baby up for adoption. Learning of this from Carrie, Tom rushed to Dorrie's office to stop Arlene. He assured her that the baby was no problem and set February 18th as their wedding day. He arranged to take a week off from the hospital so they could go on a honeymoon.

Tom ran into Ben, who was entertaining Susie Ryker. Tom could see that Ben missed his daughter, who was in London with Betsy. Ben said he didn't realize that you could love a child so much that belonged to someone else. Tom thanked him for this bit of wisdom.

Arlene was still having doubts on her wedding day. Carrie tried to stop her from reading a letter from Betsy that asked if Arlene and Tom still saw one another since Tom hadn't mentioned her in his letters. Convinced that Tom was too ashamed of her to write his family of their marriage, Arlene called Ray Slater. Seeing that she was determined to leave town, Ray agreed to take her.

Vanessa’s unhappiness caused Meg to expound her theories on the wandering husband. When she could no longer listen to her, Van broke down, telling Meg that Bruce was dying of a disease called aplastic anemia and she was having trouble accepting it. Meg forgot her sarcasm and held Van while she cried silently.

Charles was feeling self-pity as he had given up the baby. Bruce gave him something else to think of when he explained that he was dying and was depending on Charles to keep an eye on Van after his death. Bruce said he had made financial arrangements, but would like Charles to help him think of a way to ease the loneliness he knew would engulf Van. After hearing Bruce's problems, Charles felt very glad to be alive.

Bruce’s insistence that Van learn about all the household things he had taken care of for years depressed Van. Andrew suggested that she make light of what Bruce was doing to prove that she felt he would be around for a long time. Van promised to try her best.

Tom was miserable when Carrie broke the news to him that Arlene had left because she felt she wasn't really wanted. Joe felt a little responsible since he had tried to stop Tom. He assured Tom that he could tell Arlene that he really did want the baby when she returned.

Ray told Arlene that the baby would need a father and he would like her to consider marrying him. When she said that it would be stretching friendship a little too far to ask that of him, Ray admitted that he had loved her for a long time. Arlene agreed to apply for a marriage license and use the three-day waiting period to think it over. At the end of the second day Arlene agreed, telling Ray that he had to realize that she still loved Tom.

One Life to Live

After taking up residence at Ina Hopkins' boarding house, Melinda Cramer got a job in a sports equipment store. Peter Janssen patronized the shop and made a date for dinner with Melinda. At Tony's Place with Peter, Melinda overheard Dorian's reservation confirmed and managed to avoid being seen by Dorian, who wondered aloud to Edwina Lewis who her "competition" with Peter was. Marco arranged for "Linda" to try out as a piano player at Tony's Place after she was let go at the store. When Linda insisted that she couldn’t play in the atmosphere of Dorian's old cottage, Marco realized who she was. He went to see Dorian and offered to locate Melinda for $5000. Melinda got the job but both she and Dorian were furious with Marco when he brought Dorian in without warning. Melinda stood her ground and refused to throw up her job and move into Llanfair. The following day, when Linda told Tony Lord of Dorian's threat to close the place, Tony let her know he welcomed a chance to take Dorian on and insisted on a binding contract with options for renewal at an increase.

Brad Vernon was at home, unnerved over an unsuccessful attempt to recover Lana's ring from Cathy - she came home and nearly saw Brad after he lifted a key from Anna's kitchen and got into her house -, when Dorian arrived to accuse him of indifference to business since he got married. She told him his personal reputation - after the inquest into Lana's death - had been damaging to the financial stability of the club and her investment in it. She reminded him that it was collateral against the loan she advanced him and threatened to replace him with someone "hungrier," for instance Marco Dane. Brad had to promise in writing to have his troubles turned around by the end of the month or offer his resignation. Marco, in his turn, was fired as her chauffeur and she told him he could sue her for the $5000 he expected for producing Melinda.

Karen’s voice on tape, reporting Brian Kendall's hit and run, had been broadcast over the local radio stations. Frightened by this and revolted over her compulsive behavior in picking up strange men, she phoned Will Vernon for help. She was unable to tell Will what was troubling her even after he assured her that what she told him was confidential "even if a crime is involved." Karen was unaware that Cathy Lord had seen her with one of her pickups in a local dive, but when Karen volunteered some time at the Free Clinic, she became aware that Cathy was falling in love with Larry.

Vinnie’s surprise party for Wanda had backfired when a second commercial, with Wanda touting uplift bras, replaced the expected beer commercial, before the assembled friends, relatives and Vinnie's boss, Lt. Siever.

Pat Kendall had left the Riley home, insisting on going through Brian's things to dispose of them herself. When Viki had to be delayed in going to help her, she sent Paul Kendall who found a packet of letters among Brian's things, written when Paul was reported dead, and addressed to him, the boy's way of keeping alive the belief that the reports were false. When Pat learned of them, Paul insisted on staying to help her and when Tony finally called Pat, he hung up after hearing Paul's voice.

Edwina Lewis had obtained the promise of a raise from Dorian after her complaints to Joe Riley, of having to do both her own and Paul's work in the period of Kendall's bereavement, met with no sympathy from Joe. Even Dorian was shocked when Edwina tried to get Dorian to fire Pat Kendall by saying she could write Pat's column better. Dorian wondered aloud if she should change the lock on her own office door as there seemed to be no limit to Edwina's arrogance and ambition. She refused by reminding Edwina that Pat's column was a very popular feature and the whole town was aware of her tragedy, to say nothing of incurring Joe Riley's wrath.

Richard Abbott slipped a note to Rebecca under her door and heard sounds of someone in the room when he had been told that Becky had gone out for the evening to a Bingo game with Ina. He went in to find a vase knocked over and a window open, with footprints in the snow as evidence that someone – Marco - made a hasty exit. The police were called in but Ina and Mrs. Lovelace were left to deal with them, as Richard and Becky set off to find Marco. When they discovered him at the Blue Ridge Club and found he was limping badly from a twisted ankle, Richard and Marco began to mix it up and Becky joined in the near riot that ensued. Marco managed to escape before the police took over but Becky and Richard were jailed, awaiting the payment of $1000 bail before they were to be brought up on various charges. Becky was obviously frightened at the thought that her prints had been taken and the possibility of their being checked for identification.

Larry Wolek was about to declare his love for Cathy when Anna told him that Karen was in Emergency at Llanview. Karen left the clinic after she saw Larry and Cathy together and her latest playmate beat her up in his motel room. She managed to hit him and get out, but was found wandering in the parking lot of a nearby moviehouse and told Larry she had been attacked there. Ed Hall was puzzled that she showed no signs of the kind of scrapes and contusions that the gravel-covered ground would have produced. Vince Wolek tried to get Karen to look at some mug shots but Karen flipped through the book in seconds and shoved it back at him, saying she just wanted to go home with Larry and forget it. Larry moved back into the house, bringing Danny with him.

Will Vernon had been told by his colleague Dr. Pamela Sheppard that Brad made a point of coming on to her at a dinner she had prepared for Will, Brad and Jenny, turning his attention to his wife only when he noticed Will talking to her. Brad bought a low-cut dress and insisted Jenny wear it to a Birthday celebration for Pamela. He continued his flirtation with Pamela but hauled Jenny home after accusing her of making a play for one of the guests. At home, Jenny was hurt and furious at Brad's accusation and told him that she believed she was pregnant.

At Tony Lord’s, Will saw Samantha, who had passed up an invitation to the party, with Talbot Huddleston. - Sam made a point to be seen with Huddleston by Tony but had Huddleston take her home immediately after her dinner with him at the Colonial Inn. - When Will waited up for Sam, she told him she found Huddleston a bore.

Ina Hopkins picked up a paycheck for Becky at the paper and made it a point to tell Edwina Lewis that Richard and Becky had become much closer since the night they spent in jail and she wouldn't be surprised to hear wedding bells. Edwina tried to call Marco to fire him for the mess his efforts to help her break up Richard and Becky had made, but he left town, telling Ina he would be back in about a week.

Richard got a raise and told Becky he had worked out a household budget for them for after they were married. Becky accepted his proposal, telling him she would set the date after she had made a wedding dress for herself. When he asked about her family, she said she ran away from them and that even if she could bring herself to forgive them for the things that led up to it, they would never approve of her marrying a "Yankee."

Viki was very worried about Pat, telling Tony and then Joe that Pat had Brian's chess set up in the living room and a model plane he made on the mantle, and the place looked like a shrine. She resolved to get Pat out of the house and Paul helped by insisting that Pat keep a dinner engagement at the Riley's after she had tried to beg off. Pat had been very snappish at any suggestion that she return to work but when Joe said that he was worried that Dorian might someday hand him a column she had decided to do, subbing for Pat, and fall in love with her own byline, Pat laughed.

Huddleston called on Karen at her house and offered to take her on a shopping spree but Karen turned him down. Jenny came by and Huddleston pretended he had called on Karen to ask her to intercede with Dorian on behalf of one of his favorite charities. After Huddleston left, Jenny told Karen that she believed she was pregnant and that Brad was delighted. Karen said that if Jenny wasn't sure, she herself might be the first to provide their parents with a grandchild, explaining Larry didn’t know it yet, but when he came home that night, they were going to try to have a baby.

Ryan’s Hope

Written by: Claire Labine & Paul Avila Mayer

Jill Coleridge told Frank Ryan that he was the father of her son. Frank was stunned, especially since his political mentor, Rae Woodard, had just suggested he run for the Senate. Neither Jill nor Frank made any demands regarding Frank's rights or duties as a father.

Frank told Rae his situation. She pointed out he has two options: marry Jill and create a family appearance; marry Jill off to Seneca and run as a bachelor, the alternative preferred by Rae. Frank told his parents about Edmund and they were delighted to learn they had another grandchild. Frank confided his confusion to brother-in-law Jack Fenelli, who suggested Frank see Edmund. While at Jill's apartment, the two of them bridged a gap, but were interrupted by Seneca. Frank left, but promised to return for Edmund's birthday party the following day. Seneca stayed behind and told Jill that Frank would only hurt her, pointing out Frank had had several opportunities to marry her, but had let them all pass. This added to Jill's doubts. She earlier told Maeve that she was leery of letting Frank into her life, feeling he would put his political career ahead of his family.

The night of Edmund's party, Rae whisked Frank and Bob Reid, his friend and campaign treasurer, off to Washington to meet the chairman of the national party. Frank felt he was forgetting something, but didn't remember the party until many hours later. His call to Jill was unfruitful. Rae pointed out that Jill had changed her priorities, of course, since becoming a mother, which was why she lacked understanding.

Unbeknownst to Tom Desmond, he was being stalked by a man from Ireland named Liam. Liam had bought a gun, but when he aimed and pulled the trigger at Tom, who was returning from a date with Faith, the gun didn’t go off — crooked firing pin. Liam replaced the gun and waited again, but this time Tom spent the night at the hospital, where he had accompanied Faith on an emergency. However, Liam's third attempt hit a target — Seneca! Tom and Seneca had identical coats and were built alike. Faith and Tom responded when they heard the shot. Faith had Tom get Roger and they rushed Seneca to the hospital with a bullet in his back. Jill and Bucky Carter rushed to Seneca's side. His life hung by a vital thread — the will to live, which appeared to be breaking. Tom went to see Mary Fenelli, having guessed the bullet was meant for him. After hearing Mary repeat her story about seeing his picture in a bar in Limerick, while honeymooning with Jack, Tom warned her to keep her door locked. He was sure he was a hunted man.

Delia Ryan, recovering from a concussion suffered when she fell down a flight of steps after husband Pat pushed her aside while strung out on caffeine and amphetimines, sneaked out of her room searching for Pat. She saw him laughing with Faith Coleridge. Dee returned to her room and wrote a nasty letter about Faith's pursuing her husband to Faith's department head, Dr. Frankel. When Dr. Frankel called Faith in about the letter, gently warning that Faith had to rebuild her reputation since the incident during the hospital strike, Faith went straight to Dee, accompanied by her brother Roger. - Roger knew that Dee suffered a miscarriage before she married Pat, then faked a miscarriage shortly after their wedding. Roger also helped Dee fake a breakdown recently. Roger loved Dee, and wanted her, and also was privy to the disastrous effects the marriage was having on Pat, personally and professionally. - Roger wanted to see if Dee was ready to face truths. Noting Dee's reactions as Faith raked her across the coals, Roger decided Dee was well enough for the truth to come out. After Faith left, Roger told Dee he was going to tell Pat about the miscarriage and breakdown. He pointed out that Dee had to learn to stand on her own two feet, that she had to face what she had done and go on from there. In an effort to stop Roger, Dee fell out of bed. She was fine, except she couldn't see! Thorough optholmological examination confirmed that the blindness was hysterical. Roger promised not to tell Pat until Dee could see again.

Meanwhile, Pat, who could then admit he only married Dee because she was pregnant with his child, went to see Father MacShane. Pat felt guilty about Dee. Mac pointed out that guilt over her fall was useless and unnecessary. But, continued Mac, guilt feelings arising from keeping Dee in a dependent, child-like state, even if that was what she wanted, had to be dealt with. Dee's blindness tied Pat even closer. Dee's brother Bob Reid persuaded the Ryans to take Dee in, saying the protection of the family would help Dee recover sooner. They agreed. Johnny apologized to son Pat for talking him into marrying Dee because of the baby. Johnny told Pat they had to all stop coddling Dee. Dee demanded to see Roger, saying she needed his medical reassurances about her condition. She again pleaded with Roger to keep her secrets. Roger told her he had made arrangements for her to see a psychiatrist. Roger promised to keep her secret as long as she kept her appointments.

Mary and Jack Finelli were expanding their apartment by cutting through a wall to an adjoining building. They found their working and living arrangements suited them all well. Since Jack worked at home, he watched Ryan during the day while Mary continued to work at Station R.

Pat took Dee home to the Ryans'. Maeve gave Dee a bell to call for help, which Dee used often. However, safe and relaxed in the bosom of the Ryans, Dee regained her sight, while alone. Pat had told Mac he wanted out of his marriage.

Jill refused to forgive Frank for missing Edmund's party, pointing out that his priorities would always put politics ahead of family. She admitted her priorities had changed since Edmund's birth. Rae again tried to advise Frank about his relationship with Jill, pointing out she wanted a full-time politician if she was going to use her money and resources to back him. Frank replied that his private life was none of her business, even IF he ran for the Senate. Rae told him he would come around.

Seneca improved slightly, but there appeared to be pressure on the spinal chord.

Tom realized the bullet that struck Seneca was meant for him. After closely questioning Mary and the Ryans, Tom was sure someone was hunting him, and wanting to spare them all any further danger, he decided to run. Faith went for his passport and was startled in Tom's office by Liam's appearance. - Tom explained that he was running from the family of a girl he loved in Ireland. She was the daughter of an almost bankrupt textile mill owner, who wanted her to many the son of another wealthy mill owner. When the girl, Theresa, refused to give up on Tom, her brother Jim tried to beat Tom to death. Tom, however, beat Jim to death instead. He was later acquitted, after pleading self-defense. The night before the verdict, Theresa tried to climb out of her bedroom window - her father had locked her in her room for days - and fell to her death. The family blamed Tom. - Tom went home to pack when Faith called to report Liam would be waiting in his office. But Liam overheard her, and Tom faced Liam's gun. Just as Liam was about to pull the trigger, Faith arrived, distracting Liam and giving Tom a chance to try for the gun. In the struggle, Tom was shot.

As Kathy Phillips went into labor, she made psychologist Carolyn Hanley promise that blood tests would be taken to see if the parentage of her baby could be proven. She gave birth to a boy and refused to see Scott until the tests were completed. They were able to confirm that Scott was the father of her baby. This was the first step to Kathy's recovery. Scott had decided to accept part of the blame for driving Kathy to infidelity and raise the child as his own. The concern and care given Kathy by both Scott and their adopted son Eric had given her ease of mind.

Stephanie Collins had persuaded John Wyatt that he should take his vacation in the ski country of Vermont rather than on a sunny beach. This was a family outing with both of their daughters accompanying them. After a few days John began to enjoy himself. Reflecting on his relationship with Stephanie and Wendy, John could see how good they had been for him and his daughter Suzi. John proposed to Stephanie and they were married on their last day in Vermont in their own suite. Knowing that his sister-in-law, Jo Vincente, disliked Stephanie due to events in the past, John broke the news to her himself. Stephanie began looking for a house because they were very crowded in her apartment.

Dr. Gary Walton had asked Carolyn Hanley to become his bride on February 14th, Valentine's Day, so he could remember their anniversary and because he thought they had waited long enough. Carolyn's mother returned to Henderson to help with the plans for the wedding. After a beautiful ceremony, Janet Collins told her son and his bride that she was giving them the house at the lake as a wedding present. She knew they liked it there and the peace and quiet of a simple life would be good for them after a hectic day at the hospital.

Janet told Steve and Liza Kaslo that she was setting up a trust fund for her young son Danny and had given a wedding present to Gary and Carolyn. She would like to give them a down payment for a house. Janet explained that this would come to Liza later anyway and she wanted them to have it then when it could do the most good. Steve reluctantly accepted because he could see how happy this made Liza.

The hospital had decided to name its new wing after Dr. Wade Collins. The Collins Corporation won the bid for its construction. President Howard Horton decided to give Steve Kaslo the responsibility for this project, based on the promise Steve had shown since his association with the company. Bill Mendel was charged with giving Steve any help he might need, but Bill was concerned that he could soon be replaced by Steve. Mendel came right out and told Steve that he was going to keep his eye on him, looking for a mistake. It wasn’t long before Mendel took a mistake in calculations to Howard. Steve said he was sure that he did not make the mistake. Howard cautioned him. Later Howard caught a mistake and called it to Mendel's attention. Mendel charged that Kaslo was receiving special privileges because he was Janet's son-in-law and that Howard looked on him as a replacement for his deceased son. He claimed anyone else would have been fired under these circumstances.

Amy Carson continued to pull extra duty at the hospital, due to illness and vacations of the other residents. Most evenings planned with Bruce had to be cancelled. Dr. Thompson explained that her own marriage broke up because her husband couldn't cope with her career. She said that because they were women, they were expected to sacrifice their careers for their families. Bruce became more intolerant as he spent his evenings at home or with Donna Davis. His own feelings of frustration over his career contributed to his discontent.

David Sutton continued his search for relatives of orphan Jamie Lawrence, who ran in front of his car while trying to run away from a boy's home. Jamie's mother died of pneumonia while a farm worker. She had originally been hired in California. Her papers showed she was from Chicago. Checking birth records, David learned she was unmarried and her father was named as next of kin. David located George Lawrence and told him of his grandson. They were both delighted to learn they were not alone in the world. Jamie returned to Lake Geneva where his grandfather was the caretaker on an estate.

Meredith Hartford returned the pearls to the back of the drawer in Jo Vincente's room after Jo showed her the scarf she deliberately dropped so Jo would accuse her of taking the pearls. Jo assured Greg that she and Ellie scoured the whole suite, but in his search he turned up the pearls. When Jo refused to back down Greg suggested that Jo was jealous of Meredith and resented her rather than the other way around as she had continually suggested. He asked Jo to think over her feelings before they went ahead with their wedding plans.

Meredith had promised the house-keeper Evelyn Reedy financial help for her grandson, who had a fatal blood disease, in return for her help in seeing that Dr. Hartford never married Mrs. Vincente. She promised a substantial amount from her trust fund that was accessible in March on her eighteenth birthday. Evelyn brought up Meredith's plans with Dr. Hartford and learned that when she was eighteen she could only receive money for education until she was twenty-five. Furious, Evelyn slapped Meredith and called her a liar. She made demands that Meredith couldn’t refuse. She wanted a raise to $175 a week in salary and extra money from Meredith herself. Meredith was able to get a checking account for herself and a raise for Evelyn.

Evelyn’s plan to have Dr. Hartford give them cash for household expenses backfired when he said Meredith was taking on too much. Evelyn became desperate when her daughter called to ask for $1500 that she needed for an immediate operation for her son. She finally developped a plan, Meredith was to take the pearls that Mrs. Vincente returned from the desk drawer and sell them. Meredith balked, but Evelyn reminded her that Dr. Hartford could learn that she stole them once before. This would cause him to reconcile with Mrs. Vincente and she would move into the house.

Amy attended a medical conference in Baltimore with Dr. Thompson. The evening of her expected arrival home, Bruce arrived with flowers to learn that Amy called the babysitter to say the conference has been held over. Frustrated, Bruce considered turning to Donna, but was too good a friend to use her. Finding that Dr. Thompson had returned for an emergency added fuel to Bruce's fire. Amy came home to find her home life on the brink of disaster.

Janet gave Steve and Liza $35,000. Bill Mendel changed instructions on how to prepare a cost estimate and refused to submit it to Howard. Steve was sure that Mendel was changing the figures, but wanted to handle it himself without involving Howard. When Steve asked advice of Bruce and Amy, she said he had to tell Liza that he felt he had been handed too many things and wanted to earn things. If he bought a house he would have to stay at Collins to pay for it whether he liked the work or not.

Mendel told Steve that he had to take orders from him and if he refused to, he would take over the hospital project himself. When Steve told Liza that he might be out of a job, she agreed that his happiness was more important than any house.

The Young and The Restless

Nancy Becker was having nightmares about her daughter Karen. Mr. Kincaid petitioned the court and won visitation rights for the Beckers. Chris Foster noticed that Karen made reference to her other mother. Chris was upset when she was informed that the Beckers were coming to seek Karen. Karen remembered Ron and was glad to see him, but was very hostile to Nancy.

Greg Foster had decided to stay in Genoa City and set up a private law practice, intending to become wealthy. He felt he served his fellow man when he was a lawyer for Legal Aid. He thought Snapper was right to have a clinic for the poor, if that was what he wanted, but he wanted something from life then. Jill and his mother sacrificed for years, and he wanted to make things easier for them.

Jill Foster had accepted Derek Thurston's marriage proposal and engagement ring. She teased her mother, finally showing her the ring. The new beauty salon that Derek was opening, with Kay Chancellor's backing, was to be operable February 25th. Derek told Jill that he wanted her there as his wife. They would be married the day before, February 24th. Jill and Liz began preparations. Jill would like to be married at home, so Liz set about readying the house. Snapper was concerned that his mother was going to wear herself out. Snapper and Greg would take over the painting and cleaning.

Derek asked that no one tell Mrs. Chancellor until after the wedding, but Jill suggested that since his relationship with Kay was built on trust, Kay might feel he wasn't being honest. Seeing that Jill could be right, Derek visited Kay with the intention of telling her, but Kay had a suggestion for him first. She thought that women responded so well to Derek that the new salon would benefit from all male operators. Derek said Jill was his right hand, and he couldn’t do without her. When Kay conceded, he felt this was not the right time to bring up his forthcoming marriage. Knowing that Derek was on his way over to tell Mrs. Chancellor, Liz, Kay's housekeeper, almost discussed the wedding, until Jill called to warn her.

Kay’s lawyer, Mitchell Sherman, was concerned when she told him that she intended to wait until after the opening of the salon to tell Derek she tricked him into marriage. - Kay claimed a friend needed a blood transfusion and then had Derek sign the license, along with papers for the salon. She gave him champagne until he became drunk before having a friend perform the ceremony. Derek awoke in Kay's bed, unable to remember the night before. - Sherman was concerned that Kay had no written contract with Derek. She relented when Derek himself insisted that it was only fair to her that a lawyer draw up a partnership to protect her. He insisted that she receive more than 50 percent because she put up all the money. Greg asked Derek about his future and was assured that, although he was sure there could never be a problem, Mrs. Chancellor's lawyer was drawing up a contract.

Liz showed Jill the bridal gown that had been in the family for years and gave it to her. Liz saw that Jill didn’t really want to wear it, and the problem was solved when they discovered that it was too small. Liz and Jill went shopping for a nice wedding gown. They were shocked at the prices, and Jill couldn’t find that special dress. A salesperson remembered a dress that was on sale. Jill fell in love with it. Trying to be practical, she decided to shop around. The following day Jill returned to look at the dress again and ran into Brock. She told him of her wedding, and he agreed that the dress was perfect. Brock agreed that he might be able to help prepare his mother for Derek's marriage.

Mitchell Sherman tried to convince Kay that Derek was serious about Jill. He suggested having a detective follow Derek again, but Kay said he should follow Jill instead. When he reported that she was looking at wedding gowns, Kay suggested that young girls did foolish things. He came back to report that she bought a gown in the company of a tall dark man. Shown a photo of Derek, he had to say this was not the man. Brock arrived as they were leaving, and the detective confirmed that this was the man. Brock broke the news to Kay, who became hysterical. She wanted a drink, but Brock told her that Derek would feel terrible if she went back to drinking. While he was making tea, Kay sneaked several swallows of Vodka to calm her nerves.

Leslie Brooks was afraid she couldn’t per-form since she knew Lorie had written of her breakdown for the world to read, even though it was under a pen name. The Maestro called to remind her of a concert series in Denver. Lance played the piano with her until her confidence returned. He said he would fly her to Denver and stay with her. Hearing Lance arrange for the jet, Lorie assumed he was making plans for the trip he promised her. Only when he asked his brother Lucas to come to the main house to be with their mother, who would be home after her second surgery on her scarred face, did he remember his promise to Lorie. Lucas' comment that Lance was overly concerned with his sister-in-law earned him a punch in the jaw.

Leslie was very nervous about her performance, but once she started playing, she was lost to her music. When she finished, she sent Lance home to his wife.

Lorie received a call from a reporter, Jackson, in Denver who recognized the similarity in writing style and asked Lorie if she was the author of the book, which she denied. Lance called, asking her to meet him at the airport, to take off to Tahiti. After the concert, Leslie consented to an interview with the press. Everyone began to notice that Jackson was becoming obnoxious by monopolizing the interview and asking person questions. He asked her if her sister wrote "In My Sister's Shadow." Leslie denied any knowledge of the book, but fell to pieces when he said Lorie confirmed it.

Snapper forced Chris to read the psychiatric evaluations of themselves, the Beckers and Karen. The report on themselves was everything she could have expected, but she became distressed when she read that the psychiatrist felt that the Beckers were then rehabilitated and blamed no one for the mistakes in their lives. Through doll play the doctor established that Karen loved both fathers and her second mother but was trying to pay back her first mother for abandoning her by insisting that mother was dead. Rather than having no feeling for her natural mother, Karen harbored deep emotions for her. Chris wanted what was best for Karen.

Learning by phone that Leslie had cancelled her concerts, Lance drops Lorie off in Genoa City and flew on to Denver to be with Leslie. He told Lorie that he was supportive because Leslie possessed a great talent. When Lance called to accuse her of confirming Rod Jackson's story, Lucas sticked up for her.

Kay visited Jill at home to tell her that she couldn't possibly marry Derek because he was already married. She produced copies of the marriage license and certificate. Jill ripped them, saying that Mrs. Chancellor was insane and in need of professional help. Distraught, Jill burnt the papers and called Derek. Having calmed down she was embarrassed to tell him. Jill said she had seen Mrs. Chancellor drunk enough times to know that she was sober.

Thanks for posting! Oh, to ever see this someday… this must be around the end of “good Jill”, as she soon targets her mother’s beau Stuart for his money.
