DUMB QUESTION ALERT:

How will the CBS/Viacom "re-merger" affect the quality of CBS' current programming?  Under Moonves' watch, CBS began steering itself toward programs that were heavily procedural, with a pro-male/pro-conservative bent.  Do y'all think this move will change that any?

Shari Redstone, who will now be the controlling shareholder of both companies, couldn't stand Les Moonves. The feeling was likely mutual. Just speculation but with all the turmoil CBS has been in for the past couple years, why wouldn't she seek to change some things?  Every exec who ascends to the top job usually seeks to put his/her stamp on the company that they run, no?

Some history of that first merger (which I admittedly haven’t read in its entirety):

https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/cbs-viacom-merger-20-years-later-moonves-redstone-karmazin-freston-1203265965/

Interesting how the article mentions that the last time CBS and Viacom were (briefly) merged, Redstone was frustrated by what he saw as "few if any transformative acquisition properties on the horizon".

Well, something tells me that that will not be the case this time around with the plethora of programming springing up.

Wow, Phillipe Dauman was also ousted after engaging in a power struggle with Shari Redstone?  I never knew that!  I know Shari Redstone was not one to be messed with but I didn't realize the extent to which this is true!

Would the world be worse off if these (and other social media platforms) were to disappear suddenly?  I think not.

For all the justifiable criticism that The New York Times gets, this 1619 project is definitely representative of the best of what The NYT could be.

The initial retraction was unsatisfactory (above), so they finally did something they never do:

I still hate how his victims were denied true justice, and how the Senate just cavalierly branded them as liars by confirming Kavanaugh.  But, karma is real, Brett, and it's a bitch.  ;)

I don't feel like double-posting so for more on the growing blowback from this huge story ("Kavanaugh" is now trending) and the fallout for the NYT's treatment of it as well go to the Politics thread.

Oh, that is sad news.  I liked her.  She was part of an era when the news (and ABC News) was about just that, and not about everything else.

RIP Cokie.
