Closeted (gay) actors formerly on the soaps

I always wondered who was a closeted actor on the soaps. I saw a "most eligible" magazine post from 1977 in the archives. I know Val Dufour, George Reinholt, as well as sadly many of the male actors from the soaps who died young(less than 60) due to complications from AIDS circa 1983-1997ish. Any others. This is not to invade people's privacy. It's a different world now.

A lot of those actors were out to co-workers and even to some members of the press but not to the general public. But Paul Anthony Stewart brought partners/boyfriends to public events. Tuc Watkins, Murray Bartlett, and Nick Scotti were pretty much fixtures on the NYC gay nightlife scene in the 90s/00s. They weren’t really hiding.

The point has been made before that the soap press has always been complicit in the "closeting" of actors.  Many gay actors have commented that if a writer knew their sexuality then the magazine profile just would not focus on their dating life.   Certainly, by the 1990s, productions were not actively suppressing stories about actors, more often it was a fan-driven press with a misguided effort to self-censor the topic.

Not to go off on a tangent, - but - it is interesting that as a member of the gay soap audience, we've tolerated magazines profiting off of photos of shirtless soap hunks pretending that their only subscribers were female while often including insensitive remarks.  In our review of the 1990 SOD Tumblr there have been numerous examples of humor derived from a misperception that sexuality is dependant upon binary gender roles that would (hopefully) make a modern reader cringe.

Had no clue about JWS.  I only know Tom Fuccello from his Dallas time...very good looking man. I thought Timothy Patrick Murphy was bisexual. He sure was hot on Dallas.

Chris Bernau shocked me. He always had the ladies man vibe back in the 80's.

LOL...I thought PAS being gay was common knowledge already? Here is a pic of him and his boyfriend....

And his husband is 16 younger than him....good for him...he is the article from above...

Paul Stewart, 48, and Michael Cook, 32, first spotted each other through a crowd in 2010. (Paul: “It was a lesbian bar at 4 a.m. — isn’t that how we all meet our husbands?”) Five years later, Paul, an actor, proposed to Michael, a stylist and fashion editor, while they watched a meteor shower from the backyard of their Catskills house — which became the obvious choice for the wedding venue. “We spend a lot of time in the city, but this is our home,” Michael says. “Every weekend, we were mowing the paths and weeding the gardens to get it ready.” Their 50 guests gathered around a newly planted tree for the ceremony; for the reception, they followed the grooms down a path to find the caterers roasting chicken and whole lamb over a fire, the tables lined with moss. “People were traveling from all over,” Paul says. “We didn’t want to spend a minute without them.”

    • Well...I'm glad Tomas and Kat put it out there on the table.   Ooooo awww at this Anita/Vernon scene.     Yeah, I loved Vernon's talk to Anita.   But yep...a nice day, but a slow day.
    • I like the slow burn romance building between Tomas and Kat, and I also liked the homework scene with Tyrrell and his lady friend (Phil & Tara on AMC had a study date talking math as they made eyes at one another). What I most liked about this episode was that we had longer scenes today between Anita/Tracy, Chelsea/Kat, and Tomas/Kat mixed with shorter scenes.   I wonder if the breakdown writer, or script writer, determines the length of each scene.  I also have a feeling Chelsea's going to run to Dani after learning about Hayley's possible bun in the oven... and that horrid heffer (Dani) will stick her nose where it doesn't belong. That said, I liked the spark of spunk from Hayley at the end.  If she were smart, she'd pay the country club crowd no attention and focus on making friends with others outside the gate.
    • After his excellent portrayal of JFK - I remember watching it as a kid and being wicked impressed - Devane must have been in demand for big ticket projects. Sadly, he didn't get very good guidance in choosing the right parts, an often overlooked aspect of the entertainment business....to Knot's Landing's benefit, of course...
    • I'm not ready at all. But at least I can take some time at least. I know I'm going to be a crying mess.
    • I hope Rena Sofer, as Lois, remains at GH for a long time to come
    • Well, the writing wasn't helping him so it's good to hear.   VERY good to hear.
    • I'll give it a shot. If this is bad it's on you, @carolineg!
    • Absolutely ridiculous that three soaps are going to make me watch today's episodes.
    • *eyeroll* on Hayley.   While I feel like he has more chemistry with Eva, the actor playing Tomas is slooooowly improving.   Le sigh Smitty. That said...we know I'm loving the near-misses around Martin's secret. And happy it is getting attention again the last week of May Sweeps.
    • I love how farmboy  Hart became a Guido with a thick New York accent. You could tell they never knew or cared what to do with Hart post MH, he was just a hunk of steroids to take off their shirt and have girls fight over him, but I never understood what Bridget, Dinah or Cassie saw in him..(besides the proverbial roll in the hay, now there is a 20 on the dresser get out.) The move from Hilliard to Grillo was really quick and I would like to know the story...was Moniz not liking him? For more on our good old George Pilgrim, read "Unscripted" where he makes a cameo appearance as Sumner Redstone's much younger mistresses side piece. When you read about him you could imagine that Pilgrim was writing his own dialogue as obnoxious J.  There is NO way he was a product of Nola and Quint.
