FROM THE VAULT: JULIE GETS BURNED

In celebration of Susan Seaforth Hayes' upcoming 50th anniversary of playing Julie in December, here's a look back at Episode # 3406, which aired April 27, 1979. In this episode, Julie gets burned while cooking.

 

ACT SIX: FADE IN: FARMHOUSE KITCHEN

 

(LOOKING COZY AND WARM, PLACES SET ON THE TABLE, VEGETABLES COOKING ON THE STOVE, MAGGIE IS SEASONING THE STEAKS ON THE OPEN BROILER FAN AND JULIE IS FIXING A SALAD)

 

JULIE: Where's the oil and vinegar?

MAGGIE (pointing to a cupboard): Up there, behind the spices. Oh, I just thought of something. There are some pickled tomatoes in the cellar. Wouldn't they be delicious with steak?

JULIE: Anything that good has to be fattening! But go ahead.

MAGGIE: It'll take a minute. I'm not sure where Hank stored them. I'll start the steaks if you turn them.

JULIE: Sure. I'm going to bring in the carton of crystal perfume bottles from Mrs. Latimer's. I'm so crazy about them.

 

(JULIE GOES OUT TO THE CAR TO GET A CARTON WHILE MAGGIE SHOVES THE STEAKS INTO THE BROILER, LIGHTS IT, TAKES THE FLASHLIGHT  AND GOES OUT THE BACK DOOR. WE HEAR THEM AD LIB AS THEY PASS ON THE PORCH, AND JULIE IS BACK INSIDE. SHE TAKES THE CARTON OVER BY THE TABLE AND BEGINS TO SORT THROUGH ITS CONTENTS, ADMIRING HER NEW COLLECTION. SHE COMPLETELY LOSES TRACK OF TIME)

 

JULIE (to herself): Oh, what a find. I hope I can bring myself to sell them!

 

(HOLDING UP A BOTTLE TO THE LIGHT)

 

JULIE: It must be pure amethyst.

 

(SOUND: THE STEAKS SIZZLING)

In celebration of Susan Seaforth Hayes' upcoming 50th anniversary of playing Julie on December 11, here's a look back at Episode # 1134, which aired May 7, 1970. In this episode, Julie meets a charming man named Doug Williams. Here are the scenes leading up to their first meeting. Those scenes will be posted this weekend. (Note: Although Brent had already started going by the name Doug, his lines were still being listed as Brent).

 

EPISODE # 1134
AIRDATE: May 7, 1970

 

ACT TWO

INT. SUSAN'S LIVING ROOM (PICK UP SUSAN AND BRENT IN MID-CONVERSATION)

 

BRENT: Now, you know Salem better than I do. Name the best restaurant and I'll take you there. You deserve to be seen by as many people as possible.
SUSAN: You know, you can be very charming. Which I appreciate. Because the people we will be with tonight...
BRENT (puzzled): The people we will be with?
SUSAN: Did I forget to tell you? We're going to have dinner with Scott and Julie Banning...friends of mine. They want me to see their new apartment.
BRENT: Oh. Whatever you say, it's fine with me.
SUSAN: Actually, both Scott and Julie are rather important people to me. I'd appreciate it if you'd make a special effort to let our hostess feel that she, and the evening, have been a great success.
BRENT: Consider it done. (a little puzzled)  You say they are rather important people to you?
SUSAN: I'm rather fond of their son, David.
BRENT: All right, I'll turn on all my charm.
SUSAN: They'll probably want to know about you, so let's say you're an investment counselor who's just moved to Salem and who plans to open an office here very soon.
BRENT (with a smile): In other words, soft-pedal my career as a dancing instructor and nightclub entertainer!

 

(SUSAN STUDIES HIM A MOMENT, VERY SOBER)

 

SUSAN: Let me put it this way...just be yourself. I find you...have a real charm about you, Doug. You can be very disarming when you want to be. And...for my sake...I want you to be this way tonight.
BRENT: I don't track you as to why tonight is so important to you...
SUSAN: Let's say I want my friends to like you as much as I do.
BRENT: That's a very nice compliment, Susan. I wasn't at all sure I had made a good impression on you...
SUSAN: If you make half as good an impression on our hostess...I'll be most happy. And, if the evening goes well, I wish you would suggest that the four of us go out to the Collonade Room tomorrow evening. It will be my party, Doug...but I want the invitation to come from you.
BRENT: How will I know if the evening has gone well or not?
SUSAN: You'll be able to tell by looking at me.
BRENT: I'm not quite certain what this is all about, Susan. But I've felt that way from the first moment I met you.
SUSAN: It's my guess that women always follow your lead, don't they?
BRENT: They always have.
SUSAN: Do you mind playing the game my way for a change?
BRENT: Where you're concerned, I'll play any game you have in mind. (beat, with meaning) Gladly.

 

(AND TAKE THE TWO OF THEM, STUDYING EACH OTHER, ENJOYING THE FENCING MATCH)

 

ACT THREE

FADE IN: INT. SCOTT AND JULIE'S LIVING ROOM (OPEN ON JULIE, PUTTING OUT A TRAY OF HORS D'OEUVRES, CHECKING ON LAST-MINUTE ARRANGEMENTS. THERE ARE FRESH FLOWERS IN THE ROOM, EVERYTHING LOOKS LOVELY, INCLUDING JULIE, WHO WEARS A BECOMING HOSTESS GOWN. CAMERA PULLS BACK TO INCLUDE SCOTT, AS JULIE SMILES AT HIM)

JULIE: I hope everything goes all right tonight...
SCOTT: You're...a little nervous, aren't you?
JULIE: I suppose I am, a little. I can't help wondering what Susan's attitude will be, if there won't be undercurrents...
SCOTT: If there are, she'll hide them...for David's sake.
JULIE (very simply): Thank you, Scott...for trying to remember to call our son...David.
SCOTT: I don't want to confuse him...more than necessary.
JULIE: I'm very grateful to Susan, for coming over tonight. I know she's doing it for David, more than anyone else.

 

(AT THIS MOMENT, THE DOORBELL RINGS. TAKE JULIE, LOOKING AT SCOTT. THERE IS A MOMENT'S HESITATION)

 

JULIE: You know something? I'm glad Susan's bringing a date. I think it was very...wise of her. Because we'll all have to pretend a little, in front of a stranger.

Have never seen YR, other than in passing if it's on TV while changing channels. Thanks for the fun fact about it being used on YR too.

 

From the set lists, it looks like it was seen in just two episodes of Days, on 5/15/70 and 5/18/70.

 

1140...5/15/70:

Cast: Tom, Alice, Susan, Julie, Brent (aka Doug), Scott, French Captain.

Sets: Susan’s Apartment, Scott & Julie’s Living Room, Colonnade Room (Table for Four & Dancing Area).

 

1141...5/18/70:

Cast: Susan, Bill, Julie, Brent (aka Doug), Scott, Eric, French Captain.

Sets: Colonnade Room, Eric’s Office, Scott & Julie’s Living Room, Susan’s Living Room.

That's really neat about the CR being used on Days too. It makes you wonder if Bill Bell stayed on longer at Days if he would have incorporated a lot of Y&R based characters and stories, though that meaning there wouldn't have been a Y&R at all, is a sad thought...LOL

 

Jason I know you said you don't watch Y&R, but do you by chance have anything related to Susan's role as Joanna? like scripts etc...?

I just devoured that script! I have no doubt that Denise Alexander was especially heartbreaking in this episode. And I love (many times over) how Bill Bell and Pat Falken Smith embraced how loving the Hortons are. This line in particular got me all verklempt: "Because no matter what has happened in the past, this is Alice's granddaughter, a child who spent considerable time growing up in this house."

The script is a real treat! Thank you for sharing all your goodies, Jason! That said, I got a kick out of the tape date versus air date. It was only 8 DAYS! (No pun intended! LOL!)

 

Now it is 6 to 7 freaking MONTHS. Way too far ahead, especially if things need altering!

      I really have no problem with Kai as a character or with the actor. The problem is putting together two very nice people -- Kai and Trina. Neither of them has a bad side, neither of them has a devil on the shoulder, neither of them is impulsive. I think that's a problem in a soap relationship. Yeah, I agree. All this freaking out might make sense if Lulu wanted to do a tabloid expose on BLQ's LOVE CHILD. We have no indication that's the case.

      So Sonni would have somebody to talk to who she wasn't conspiring with (Will or Alan)? Alex kept telling Sonni how important her friends were...when she had virtually no friends. Instead they created loyal servants like Jane and Vera to give Alex people to play off of. They did that with Iris on AW, but Vivien was mostly there for comic relief Alex keeping Marah's paternity a secret was absurd. But I still love the scene between Alex and Alan where he convinces her by reminding her how they protected each other from their abusive father. Chris and Bev ATE that scene. Unfortunately, that took place only a few months before he exited the show...always thought they could have built on that, explored more how being Brandon's children screwed them both up. Maybe even used it as an explanation for the way their relationship could constantly swing from hatred to love. Instead of it being merely dictated by the plot.

      The first one is Cass Winthrop dressed as Krystle Lake on Another World (not from his original creation of the character to hide from the loan shark Tony the Tuna, but at a romance convention trying to find out what had happened to Felicia who was missing). The second one is also Another World, Jake McKinnon as Doris although I don't recall what his purpose was.

      I know there was one brief scene in the summer of 1989 where Lillian did mention Calla.. but in relation to her past relationship to Ross and it was to Roger while he was a patient at Cedars.  I think he was trying to pump her for information on Ross.. and for some reason, Calla's name came up.   I could see perhaps Beth mentioning that her mother Lillian was visiting Calla.. but not exactly giving any sort of details as to the going ons in Calla's life off screen.

      They're neither great nor terrible AFAIK, but it is more a question of the streaming numbers in this day and age vs. actual TV airings. The Chibnall era reminded me much more of the crisis years, but I do think it's a very real possibility now as well due to the streaming bubble collapse affecting the show and its prospects.

      ANYTHING to get her off the screen..she COULD have been interesting if she and Van had a few face offs..(there was a mild one of her going back to work...but I wanted something meatier "Bitch, I am Vanessa Chamberlain and I don't take advice from someone who followed the..career path you did!" I did like Alex's outright disdain for her.

      Thanks @Vee for the commentary.    I haven’t even watched this season yet after  I couldn’t get past the couple episodes last season…like it was too Disneyified for my taste, although I did think it was a least better than the Chibnall era (but so is a lot of things). I’ll probably go back and binge it now. Hoping this season ends on a high note. I did read the ratings are terrible. As it stands I’m beginning to feel like what long time DW fans felt with S26 in 1989.
