Members Paul Raven
Dorothy Louden garnered attention in the early 60's on Broadway that led to her taking over for Carol Burnett on the Gary Moore show, which had given Carol national attention. Dorothy also got a sitcom pilot at this time. But nothing came of that. Then after her Broadway run in Annie in 77 which earned her a Tony she was back on TV in 'Dorothy' a sitcom that CBS played off over Summer.
Members Paul Raven
In the mid 60's both Maureen O'Hara and Janet Leigh had sitcom pilots that weren't picked up.
Members will81
I will put Whoopi Goldberg here too. I know The View is successful, but that was long established before she came on. None of her sitcom attempts, Bagdad Cafe which lasted 15 episodes or Whoopi which lasted one full season only, nor her own talk show took off.

Members Paul Raven
But Sandra was an unknown at that point. We're talking about well known/successful performers giving a TV series a whirl.

Members will81
Do you think it would have lasted if not for that? I actually looked into it more. CBS put it on Fridays at 8:30. Though it didn't lose much of its lead in from Evening Shade, neither show did well in the ratings, then again nothing was going to beat ABC's TGIF line-up
Members Paul Raven
Broadway legend Ethel Merman had a sitcom pilot around 1977.
Members Paul Raven
Janet Leigh's pilot was 'Meet Maggie Miller' in 1964. Broadway legend Carol Channing piloted 'The Carol Channing Show' around that time.
