Concert Pianist

From ChamberMusic Central, Inc.:

After winning the gold medal in piano performance 3 years in a row from the Music Education League at Steinway Hall in New York, Millette went on to attend the Pre-College Division at Juilliard. Her fascination with the theater took her to Northwestern University to study acting. After graduation, Millette went on to pursue a career in theater and television, appearing in hundreds of shows, including 14 years on The Guiding Light.

The piano was always a constant companion, frequently being incorporated into the shows in which she appeared. After raising 3 beautiful children, Millette returned full time to her first love, the piano.

Back at The Juilliard School, she met Frank Daykin, with whom she had an immediate musical rapport. They formed the Alexander Daykin Piano Duo, performing may concerts in this country and France. Their recording of Bach's Art of the Fugue was selected by American Record Guide as one of the 10 best recordings of the year.

After moving to Connecticut, Millette's love for music and children led her to the formation of Chamber Music Central, Inc. to provide a vehicle for exposing talented young musicians to the joys of making music together -- Serious Fun!

Former daughter-in-law of Oscar Hammerstein II.  Mother of 3:  Adam, William and Jennifer.

Baron Karl Von Vietinghoff-Scheel   10/23/1953 - 55     Divorced

Obituary from The New York Times (link has a paywall)

Elizabeth Allen, a leading actress on Broadway and in movies who got her start as the “Away we go!” girl on “The Jackie Gleason Show” in the 1950’s, died Sept. 19 in Fishkill, N.Y. She was 77.

The cause was kidney failure, her sister-in-law, Marion Gillease, said.

Ms. Allen played major roles in five Broadway shows and in six movies, appeared on numerous television shows, including “Kojak” and “Mannix,” and sang at the Stork Club in New York. She was twice nominated for Tony Awards: in 1962 for best featured actress in a musical in “The Gay Life,” and in 1965 for best actress in a musical in “Do I Hear a Waltz?”

Elizabeth Ellen Gillease was born on Jan. 25, 1929, in Jersey City, the daughter of Viola and Joseph Gillease. Her marriage in 1953 to a German baron, Karl von Vietinghoff-Scheel, ended in divorce. She left no immediate survivors.

As a teenager, Ms. Gillease, a tall, willowy brunette, was noticed by a photographer as she walked on Madison Avenue. That led to a five-year career as a fashion model. In 1953, she tried out for a bit part on the Gleason show and was chosen instead to introduce the program with what became its trademark proclamation, “And away we go!”

While on the Gleason show, Ms. Allen also worked as a costume designer for a production of “Hamlet” by the Helen Hayes Equity Group. One day, Ms. Allen recalled, Ms. Hayes noticed that she unwaveringly would watch every rehearsal and said to her, “I think you’re in the wrong end of the business.” Ms. Allen began playing roles with the company’s national touring troupe.

Her big break came on a Saturday night in October 1957. While working in an industrial show in Detroit, Ms. Allen received a phone call asking her to return to New York to read for the role of Juliet in the Peter Ustinov comedy “Romanoff and Juliet.” The show was scheduled to open in five days, but there had been difficulty with the actress cast as Juliet. Ms. Allen had been recommended by Jack Manning, the director of the Hayes touring troupe.

She flew to New York on a Sunday and read for Mr. Ustinov and the producer David Merrick on Monday. Wherever she went during the next three days, including while her hair was being dyed red, she was trailed by someone helping her memorize the script. On Thursday night, the show opened.

Ms. Allen’s Broadway roles and television appearances led to her Hollywood career. Among other major film roles, she played in “Diamond Head” with Charlton Heston, in “Donovan’s Reef” with John Wayne and in “From the Terrace” with Paul Newman.

In 1965, Ms. Allen received her best-actress Tony nomination for the role of Leona Samish in Richard Rodgers’s musical “Do I Hear a Waltz?,” about an American secretary seeking, but not quite finding, romance while on vacation in Venice.

“I hated being remembered as the ‘Away we go!’ girl,” Ms. Allen once said. “Now I love it, because so many people liked it. It’s flattering.”

Apologies for the time between postings --  theater, unlike movies, have several sites for research, and then paring all the duplicates into one list can get time consuming.

I love Jan Sterling-she always is always great, no matter the quality of the movie.

Would love to see her on TGL.

Never apologize for time b/w posts - we all appreciate the continued effort.

Obituary:

Byline: The New York Times

Bibi Besch, an actress who appeared on many of television's most popular shows and was on the board of the Screen Actors Guild, died Sept. 7, at the Daniel Freeman Hospital in Los Angeles. Besch was 54.

She died of cancer, said her sister-in-law, Jenny Besch of New York.

Besch, a daughter of the actress Gusti Huber and the mother of the actress Samantha Mathis, appeared on such television series as ``Northern Exposure,'' ``E.R.,'' ``L.A. Law,'' ``Law and Order,'' ``Night Court,'' Family Ties,'' ``Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,'' ``Coach,'' ``It's Garry Shandling's Show'' and ``Murder, She Wrote.''

Her performances in ``Doing Time on Maple Drive'' and on ``Northern Exposure'' won her Emmy nominations in 1992 and 1993.

Besch's film credits included ``Steel Magnolias,'' ``Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,'' ``Tremors,'' ``Betsy's Wedding,'' ``Who's That Girl'' and ``The Promise.''

A director of the Screen Actors Guild from 1990 until her death, Besch served on many of the organization's committees, among them the national communications committee, the women's committee, the agents relations committee, and the women's health task force.

Besch was born in Vienna, came to the United States as a child and grew up in the Westchester County towns of Mount Kisco and Chappaqua, N.Y. She attended Connecticut College and the New York City acting school HB Studio.

In addition to her daughter, who lives in Los Angeles, Besch is survived by her brother, Andrew Besch of New York City; two sisters, Drea Gillogly of Los Angeles and Christina MacDonald of Monceaux, France; and her stepfather, Joseph Besch of New York.

Thanks for tagging me @slick jones Warren was so warm and wonderful on Twin Peaks. Really wish Lindsay had stayed on ATWT a bit longer but it's a credit to her she did as much with Betsy post-Steve as she did.

    • HBS loves Gregg Marx, and often tells the story about how difficult it was filming bed scenes with Marx, while she was six month pregnant. At the time the show chose to hide her pregancy, but HBS was big. She used to joke that it was three in that bed (her, Marx and her stomach) and since Marx didn't much experience with pregnant women, he didn't know how to coordinate his body over hers to hide her stomach. Which HBS found hilarious everytime they had to do a bed scene.
    • Tut tut Jack wore no condom. And it was a shipwreck. Jennifer managed to pack her diaphragm when the boat went down and insert it right before her cave sex. Far more plausible
    • Thanks so much @SoapDope78 Wow-the first week of 1 hr shows and Gloria Monty's tenure. It's been reported that she scrapped the first few shows that had already been taped in the hour format, but like so many stories from the good ol' days that might be a myth. Nothing about what we saw there suggests any noticeable changes in direction or production.
    • Sami's Three Stooges stole the show today

I enjoyed their individual scenes with other characters before they all came together at the Pub to commiserate over their relationships with Sami. I thought that was broken down pretty well. I just wish it had gone on a little longer. And I actually found it kinda funny too lol it seemed more mature than what we're used to. That's the kind of humor that should be on a soap. But I'm not really sure about all this talk of Dante Vitali and Sami's engagement though, especially since it doesn't look like Ali Sweeney is coming back anytime soon. What's the point of it all if we're (probably) not going to see it? It also looked like today was the first round of Brady vs. Xander as well lol I enjoyed their fight, and I'm interested in seeing this storyline play out. Even though I'm sure that Sarah will ultimately go back to Xander in the end, I'd like to see what happens along the way, and how they and everyone around them are affected by this. Btw, Theo and Jada? Idk. I still think he had the most chemistry with Arianna. And he was a bit of a dick too. It also seemed a little out of character for Jada to be so OK with him being such a dick  And though Alex and Stephanie were very boring again and need much better conflict than this book stuff, I am interested in the mystery of who's targeting Alex.  And yeah, I know this is a nitpick, but why is the Square still open after the gala? Isn't it supposed to be really late at night?
    • In fairness, Hillary and Bob Woods were thick as thieves again at least by the end of OLTL. But both she and I believe Mark Derwin not so subtly dissed Kale Browne in the oral history, lol.
