Members Faulkner
Yuh-Jung Youn just won the Supporting Actress BAFTA, which is a boost for her Oscar prospects. Would be only the second actress of Asian descent (to my knowledge) to win an Oscar after Miyoshi Umeki for Sayonara in 1958.
Members Faulkner
I get that the BAFTAs have a bias toward Brits, but oh snap. Worth noting that BAFTA didn’t nominate Carey Mulligan (!), Viola Davis, or Andra Day for Best Actress, so grain of salt when it comes to the Oscars: The greatest of locks: Chloe Zhao won Best Director in addition:
Administrator Toups Posted April 13, 2021 Administrator Share Posted April 13, 2021 Chloe Zhao also won the Directors Guild Award. "Chicago 7" and "Nomadland" are the two horses ahead, coming down the stretch, in the Best Picture race.

Members Faulkner
I wonder if the recent Ahmed and Hopkins wins suggest Chadwick isn’t as solid as I thought. Hard to know.

Members Faulkner
I like winners having more time to speak, but this is boring. Zero atmosphere. No clips for the nominated actors, just last year’s winner gushing at them individually? No stills for the makeup and hair nominees? Isn’t this supposed to be promotional for the films? The Grammys did a much better job of updating their format this year. Edited April 26, 2021 by Faulkner
Administrator Toups Posted April 26, 2021 Administrator Share Posted April 26, 2021 Chloe Zhao becomes the first woman of colour, and second woman overall, to win Best Director. Please register in order to view this content I’m not a fan of the tidbits about the nominees, like I don’t really care what you’re favorite movie was when you were 8 years old. LOL. It was a waste of time and I’d rather see clips from the movies. I’m also not liking Questlove’s DJing (like the record scratching).
Members jcar03
It's been really disjointed. They done a couple categories with clips. They did one bit about the songs. They did Best Picture before the two acting awards. I enjoyed the host-less format 2 years ago but I really think they need a host to hold the show together.
Members Faulkner
You were right about Frances! They put Actor last, banking on a Chadwick win, and screwed themselves when an absent Anthony Hopkins won. LOL. You were also right about that, @Toups.
Administrator Toups Posted April 26, 2021 Administrator Share Posted April 26, 2021 Best Picture before the Best Actor/Actress!? I didn’t like that. The Producers must’ve really thought Chadwick was going to win for them to do that. So the SAG awards got both Leading categories wrong and they usually get those right. One thing I did like was the 8pm start time. I hope they keep this.
Members DaytimeFan
That was the worst Oscar telecast ever. What a boring mess.
Members Faulkner
But BAFTA got both right. I figured them awarding Hopkins was just Brit bias (plus they have a bad track record of recognizing Af-Am talent). Indeed. And they had all those prior pandemic-adjusted ceremonies to learn how to do an entertaining ceremony in these difficult times. The Grammys actually nailed it.
Members DramatistDreamer
At least it didn't drag on past midnight. When Delroy Lindo didn't get a nomination, almost immediately I guessed that Oscar likely had Anthony Hopkins' name already engraved on it. Don't ask.
Administrator Toups Posted April 26, 2021 Administrator Share Posted April 26, 2021 I don't really pay that much attention to the BAFTAs because I never considered them a good predictor of the Oscars, so I guess next year I'll consider them. LOL I got 3 out of the 4 acting wins right - just got Lead Actor wrong. Best Director was obvious. Nomadland was one of the two favourites going in, so it was no surprise to see it win Best Picture. Kudos to Marvel Studios for getting Chloé Zhao before all these accolades.
