I know its thirty year later, but self-contained episodes are what bugs me about the Dynasty reboot.  It gets so repetitive that every week two characters have an argument and then makeup in the final act.  I need a nighttime soap to leave me with a cliffhanger so that I am motivated to come back every week.

Yep - Lorimar considered returning both Dallas and Falcon Crest to the self-contained format for the 1988-89 season. They mentioned in the press it would allow them to do stories like one where Bobby tracks down his old basketball coach to give him some bad news.

Thrilling!

LOL!

In order for the return to self-contained episodes to have worked, both shows would have needed to scale everything down (or back down), make the characters less arch, and so forth.  No longer could DALLAS or FALCON CREST do stories about corporate takeovers and criminal cartels.  That would have been tough for audiences to accept, to say the least.

On the other hand, if KNOTS LANDING had returned to their original format of self-contained episodes, with stories that are resolved (more or less) within sixty minutes, I think it could have worked, because the characters weren't quite as larger-than-life.  For sure, David Jacobs would have been ecstatic about the prospect of maybe bringing the show back to his original, "Scenes from a Marriage"-like concept.

The reason I don't think these shows could have done self-containing stories - and why it didn't work for soaps that tried - is because doing it in 60 min forces a resolution and that's not how life works, particularly for the kind of stories soaps tell
When it comes to romance, social issues, business dealings, nothing ever gets resolved and things re ongoing. You can't tie everything with a neat bow like you can when the perp gets arrested on Murder She wrote.

LOL, no. After finishing up her phone sex with Bobby, Pam just throws up her hands in front of her face in a lame attempt to protect the money.

They should have ended the series with the previous scene: JR walking out of Ewing Oil and vowing to get it back.

I recall Victoria Principal being pissed about her exist.

In all honesty Dallas should've ended in 1989 like Dynasty did. The numbers for the show were still not into the gutter and without Sue Ellen the show had nothing left.

These days they'd make Victoria Principal do a coda PSA about distracted driving.

It is an interesting purely theoretical question but I reckon of the 80s supersoaps the one that would be unlikely to be made today as anything resembling the original would be Dallas

I am not foolish enough to believe Hollywood has solved its gender problem and that toxic sets don't exist anymore but the obvious macho culture on that set and in the writing room, I believe, was too over-the-top to be acceptable in today's environment.
So it is hard to pile hypotheticals upon hypotheticals but I think nowadays a showrunner - and a network - would recognize the value of Pamela to balance JR and the overly male cast and she would have been unlikely to be written out at that stage unless she wanted out.

Victoria likes to say these days that when she signed her two-year contract extension in 1985, she told them that would be her last contract. In reality, she was negotiating for another new contract in 1987. The sticking points: she wanted salary parity with Patrick Duffy (who got a big raise when he returned a year earlier) and she wanted a one-year deal (the producers wanted two). So they let her walk away. Big mistake. And the producers pissed her off by leaking to the press that they had let her go, which she forced them to correct, and they even took away her parking space.

But they were expecting her to come back, which is why Pam’s exit is so bungled. They started shooting the next season immediately after they finished Principal’s last season, trying to bank episodes in anticipation of a writers’ strike. TV Guide reported at the time that they were removing Pam from the new season’s scripts.

When Sue Ellen did her “movie” a couple of seasons later, notice how there were no clips of Pam. And when Bobby showed Pam’s lookalike a picture of Pam, it was NOT Victoria. She wouldn’t give permission for her clips or image to be used. That’s unusual for an actor - again, they must have really pissed her off.

Dallas was still a Top 30 show in 1988/89. The final two seasons were below the Top 30. Of note is that CBS was in 3rd place during the final four seasons of Dallas (1987/88 to 1990/91).

    • John loved Sami unconditionally and forever
    • On May 27, Johnny spoke to Sami on the phone, and learned that Sami and Sydney were trying to fly in from Sicily, but were stopped by a volcanic eruption because the ash had grounded all the planes. As discussed on the May thread, ash from Mt. Etna in Sicily caused planes to be grounded in summer 2024, so Cwikly/Ford would have known that.  (I just learned that Mt. Etna has been considered "active" with intermittent activity since 2022.) Friday May 30, Will said that Sami and Sydney found another flight and will be here soon. Well, Sami and Sydney got out just in time, because … There was (and still is ongoing) a huge eruption of Mt. Etna that began very early Monday morning June 2 Italy time (which would be Sunday night June 1st Chicago time) and a volcanic ash plume had reached an altitude of around 6,400 metres (around 3 or 4 miles high) https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/mount-etna-eruption-volcano-smoke-lava-live-updates-b2761911.html
    • Agree to disagree. Like first, love second. OH, agree, agree, agree! Legendary Featherstone, you're not dressing this one well at all. Petite woman with ample bosom, wrong clothes = awful  matronly looking ugh. I'm sorry but I felt hit over the head with everything each of them thought & felt for about 6 more days than I felt I had signed on for.  I don't know you well enough to know if you will know when I'm teasing, so I've just warned you that I am when I say, I hate for you that you haven't actually met Danielle before. LOL. To me it was just a natural take.  I have no problem going back & forth between those two focal sites. But, I am certainly aware that early on I had an expectation of being really into their having 27 sets & that has definitely not been the realization. And, yes, for now, Frank is still heads above any & all others with us & sets IMO.  Huh? Guza gone. I have it in my head that he was only willing to come out of retirement (and presumed mourning) for a "certain amount of time" to help get this new creature launched, but had no desire to stay & so was one of the "over-staffed intentionally" that we were told about. Of course there's been no official word on the circumstances of his leaving.  But, you might mean go with Guza as in a style, if so, ignore the last para.

    • I'm so pleased we have such fan engagement about Dani. Reminds me of some other soap characters. I think it's because they are "polarizers" which is a word I may have just made up. They are polarizing on their shows to other characters & to story & they are polarizing in the audience as fans seem to have extreme reactions to them, love & hate, not middling neutrality, ya know? Well, it's a theory.  To me the human being you seek has been amply shown especially to two people & both more or less recently. Her sister bond with Nicole, whoa, has knocked me back & blown me away. And, with Chelsea, over her budding sexual identity and awareness. She gathered instantly that something was up with that daughter & was laser focused on her for several scenes. Then, for a third, she & Pamela have finally, also recently, been so real & genuine & authentic.
    • Thanks, Paul, I did not know about his interest in the comedic elements or that he was one of our many people who came from the network! I have always liked Marlena de la Croix's writing, which is not to say I 100% agree with her. She's been a member of my FB soap group for a good long time & she actually posts, which I love. Recently I posted about an e-copy of Robert LaGuardia's SOAP WORLD that is free to borrow like a library e-book but on the Internet Archive site & I posted that at the time of their publications, all of his soap opera books were the gold standard.  She immediately posted about "Bob" who was her close friend & how much she still misses him to this day & that he loved to talk soaps & was also a nice guy, etc. which I was over the moon to have her share about the author & his time etc. like that!!!
    • Just more RTD ego trips, seemingly his main reason for coming back.
    • Thanks @Paul Raven  That's a lovely writeup. Do fans feel it was warranted?

I really wonder why they chose to write this whole ‘John is getting better’ part of the storyline, especially since we all knew what was really going to happen. And I hope we find out the answer someday. But as tough and as tearjerking as today was, it was also really beautiful. And the acting, even though a lot of it if not all of it was real, was spectacular. The flashbacks were beautiful too. I honestly can’t even describe how much I enjoyed today.  Having so many of John and Marlena’s scenes be focused on the two of them and their love story was the right decision. It was a fitting end to John and Marlena. And I’m also glad that John and Steve got to have one last goodbye after everything that happened. As for Bo and Hope and their family, I did think that some parts were a little unnecessary but I really enjoyed Bo’s dream and his reunion with Zack. The acting playing Zack actually did a pretty good job too. Everybody encouraging Bo to fight was really the right decision in this storyline as well.  As for the final minutes of today, be prepared. I actually have tears running down my cheeks as I write this.
