I've been a fan of soap operas since the mid-1960s. And I have always been a soap opera traditionalist -- which means a lot of things. But it has always meant that I love legacy characters. And it has also meant (for me, at least) that I haven't been a huge fan of younger characters or youth storylines. But Josh Griffith's weird-ass decision making and weird-ass writing for the past few years on Y&R has made me reconsider all of that.
So these are my post-Josh Griffith opinions on Y&R: First, the new head-writers at Y&R need write off at least six or seven contract characters, and several of them should probably be legacy characters (this is heresy for me!!). Next, the show needs a fairly large group of (maybe five) young characters, no older than freshman year in college. Even if some of them are de-SORASED (Charlie and Mattie for example). I also think the show needs a new family -- preferably working-class to add some class-conflict to the show (after 30-years without it). A couple of the new young characters could be members of this family. And bring back Jill permanently. The job belongs to Jess Walton, but if she truly wants to retire, I'm confident a good recast would be accepted.
