Thanks @JAS0N47 that's a relief! If September 10 hasn't been a preemption it would have messed up all the assumed episode numbers. :D Totally understandable to make a mistake every once in a while.

I just happened to be typing up the week of 3/23/87 today, so here are the first week of BB's ratings:

3/23/87-3/27/87    Bold and the Beautiful    CBS    5.6    20    197    94

Great! That tracks with what I thought.

If I'm reading correctly, the ratings for US Open are in the 3s and 4s, lower than even Capitol?! Then what is the point of preempting the soaps...

Yes, the overall ratings for them are:

US Open Monday rating is 3.5/10
US Open Friday rating is 3.7/15

Oh your fine!! :D I’m so glad it’s all cleared up, You have been so amazing posting all of these charts!

Thanks!  You see, the Nielsen books never mention the word "preemption."  That's just something I have to figure out from the charts & other data. The Nielsen books also don't do any rankings. So. all of the preemption data & rankings have to be figured out from the data the books do provide. But it's a fun puzzle to piece together!!

That's not bad for B&B! Thanks.

Maybe I'm naive but I'm honestly shocked that the soaps do so much better than an almighty sacred sports event! I always thought those events were so popular that they had to preempt our silly soaps so they could get the ratings for sports. Maybe March Madness and Thanksgiving football do better. Or maybe it is just that the network signs a contract for broadcast rights to sports so they preempt the soaps. And as far as I know, most sports have less commercials than scripted series so it seems like they lose money between paying for the rights, less commercials, and lower ratings?

It's fascinating to see it all come together.

Thanks for typing that all out! That's more along my expectations with sports being high and those kiddie specials being much lower.

Breaks my heart to see Edge with so few affiliates!  I think I remember reading there were going to be more affiliates dropping in the first of the year so it was no longer profitable for P&G.

ATWT doing well. Had SBH and Robert Calhoun taken over by then?

A few years back I researched As the World Turns EP/HW changes. Robert Calhoun became EP in October 1984. Susan Bedsow Horgan became co-HW in November 1984 and sole HW in February 1985.

You're welcome @Soapsuds

When we get to 1983, it will be interesting to see first half of As the World Turns vs. second half of supercouple Days.

Yet, it's performing at the same level as SB and SFT which have higher clearances. It really was poorly handled and could have succeed under the right hands.

The week of October 18th, AW had another big event in Wyoming after San Diego in March and the Bel Aire Towers collapse in July.  In Wyoming, Buzz had kidnapped Blaine, and Sandy had to rescue her.  At this point, P&G was still spending lots of money on AW, but the viewers just weren’t there.

What's sad about the station clearance of The Edge of Night is to run the math on its potential.  It clocked in at a 2.8 for the week of 10/12/1984, with a clearance of only 106 stations.  If you take that 2.8 rating and extrapolate it to clearance of 208 stations (which General Hospital had), you'd be looking at a rating of 5.5 or 5.6 for that particular week, placing it just behind Capitol.  (And this is when Edge was already in its death throes.)
