Love Boat reruns continued on ABC right up to mid 83 when Loving debuted.

I imagine that the ratings softened as the years went by but once Love Boat was gone, ABC really struggled in that 11am timeslot.

It was often said that ABC soaps got their highest ratings in the Northeast and on the West Coast and CBS soaps got their highest ratings in the South and Midwest. Not sure where the NBC soaps fit regionally.

I feel like Chicago itself, where I grew up, was an ABC daytime town, and possibly for local news as well. I don't necessarily have data I can point to, but just about everyone I knew who watched soaps and news watched the ABC lineup and Eyewitness News, and I vaguely recall some sort of on-air Chicago ratings recap in the early 80s where episodes of All My Children would frequently be among the top shows.

That was a pivotal week in CBS daytime history, as Y&R expanded to 1 hour and CBS rearranged the afternoon line up (ET) to Noon Local programming, 12:30 pm Search for Tomorrow, 1 pm Y&R, 2 pm As the World Turns, 3 pm Guiding Light, 4 pm One Day at a Time reruns.

Wheel of Fortune has blown up, and we're still four months away from the syndication debut.

Yup, that's my takeaway, too. The lead-out shows, on the other hand, aren't as competitive.

WOF, like "Jeopardy!," is so durable, because the concept's pretty simple: you spin the wheel, you solve the puzzle.  Add in Vanna White (who has had one of the easiest jobs ever, but who is a total fashion plate) and Pat Sajak (who has maintained his quirky sense of humor, even if his politics can be repugnant for some) and you can see why the show blew up so quickly.
