Ratings from the 80's

Interesting how similar these numbers are, yet if I read this right, Knots had 12.5% coverage yet had pretty much the same numbers as Dynasty and Dallas which both had around 50%? Makes you wonder if Knots could've done better than both of them with more coverage, but maybe these just overperformed in some and bombed in others.

I guess a lot depended on timeslots. Some stations might show Knots at 4pm and others  late night. It's not as straightforward as network.

I remember seeing in Variety Lorimar placing ads to tout KL for example, and cherry picking markets where the show was doing well, whereas actual ratings reports painted a different picture.

Very interesting to see how the total viewers differs from the actual Nielsen ratings. Makes me wonder how the charts year-to-year would look if they just showed total viewers; would there be the same drastic drop-off over the decades pre-00s?

ABC lost ground 11-12 once Love Boat reruns were out of the schedule. It seemed the perfect show for that slot, familiar light and easy and it filled up the whole hour. Benson/Loving didn't have the same appeal.

I wonder if Fantasy Island was ever considered for daytime showing? I guess as it was more dramatic it was felt it wasn't suitable for mornings.

That gave NBC some leverage with Wheel of Fortune/Dream House which I think got some of their best ratings in years in that slot.

Some further context

July 4-8 83

CBS 7.0 6.3 1 yr ago

ABC 6.5 down from 7.7 1 yr ago

NBC 5.0 up from 3.9 1 yr ago

TPIR  9.4/36 NBC  Dream House 20 share - first  time NBC beat ABC at 11.30 in almost 7 yrs, showing how Loving had damaged the schedule. Family Feud at midday had also declined due to a weaker lead-in.

A pity NBC daytime couldn't have built on that renewed success.

New game show Wordplay replaced Search for Tomorrow at 12:30 pm and its run was December 29, 1986 to September 4, 1987.

NBC moved Scrabble to 12:30 pm on September 7, 1987, where it remained until March 24, 1989.

Scrabble probably was a better lead in for Days than Search for Tomorrow, Wordplay, and Generations were, but I think it's safe to say that Y&R was clobbering it.
